Associate Publisher's Note

When Entering Yerevan

The first safe expression that the tourists always share is as follows “What a nice weather”. It is already October, the fall is already in its full swing but the weather is as sweet as never: it is not hot and it is not very cold and even the short rains are too enjoyable. This is the period of the best dresses and accessories. All the suitcases are full of colored jackets and scarfs and when they are on you, you seem to be messed with the already turned leaves and trees in the of heart magic parks and gardens of Yerevan. October 2014 seems to be poetic and bohemian in Yerevan. People spend the 90% of 24 hours outside: the outside cafes, tea houses, theaters and cinemas, libraries and concert halls, streets and avenues are full of people belonging different cultures and nationalities. Yes, it is because the prestigious festivals and expos have already started. To cut a long story short, the city is in a fast rhythm and non-standard pulse. This month TourInfo is also full and rhythmic…. full of interesting articles about the cultural life of the country, tourism news, interesting projects and just useful information. Everything interesting is inside: turn the pages and never miss your chance to combine the interesting with the useful. Enjoy your stay! Best regards

The Impressive Opera “Ring of Fire” Took Place in Shoushi

O

n 1st of September the premiere of Avet Terteryan's opera “Ring of Fire” took place in Shoushi fortress, under the high patronage of the Spouse of the President of RA Mrs. Rita Sargsyan, The Ministry of Culture of Armenia and NKR, with the support of Al. Spendiaryan National Opera and Ballet Theatre. The opera was dedicated to the Independence Day of Artsakh and the 85th anniversary of Avet Terteryan. Senior officials and different guests gathered in the heroic city of Shoushi. The first lady of the RA, the presidents of the Republic of Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh - Serj Sargsyan and Bako Sahakyan, the spiritual leader of Artsakh archbishop Martirosyan were present at the premiere. Guests from Russia, such as the bright representative of Russian opera art Lyubov Kazarnovskaya honored the evening with their presence. Last year the composer from Artsakh Andrey Babayev performed the opera “Artsvaberd” in the square of Shoushi. By the way both operas reflect the process of promotion of the opera art. “Artsvaberd” was written in 1957, after which no opera was written for 10 years. It was only in 1967 that the 38-year-old Avet Terteryan created the “Ring of Fire”. It was performed in National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Armenia in the same year and became a great event in the musical life of our country. In the year of 1973 “Ring of Fire” was recorded in Moscow and staged in the city of Halle, Germany in 1978. The second version of the opera with the headline “They were going towards the sun” was staged in Yerevan in 1977 and was welcomed warmly during the tours in Saint Petersburg. The genre of the opera is chamber and static images dominate in it. Terteryan wrote about his opera: “This is an opera based on situations of war, peace and love...’’ This is firstly a psycho drama of two people in love. This glorious performance took place thanks to “Afina Pallada’’ company president of Hayk Maghaqelyan. Looking at the old walls of the fortress one percieves how many years ago the sounds of this music were heard in the silence of the fortress.

Celebrity Talks Enjoy Your Time With Djs Haik Solar & Arni Rock

Haik Solar (Harutyunyan) – the talented songwriter of several Armenian hits and the member of “Apricota” project has now become more professional in his career of a DJ. His interest towards music production programs appeared from school years. This was when he started to create music. In the year of 2006 the huge hit “Qami pchi“ written by Haik broke into popular music charts and could be heard in almost every corner of the city. Soon he started showing deep interest towards electronic music and took professional DJ-ing classes. After getting acquainted with DJ Arni Rock, he started his career in this sphere.

Arni Rock (Vahe Akhperjanyan) – one of pioneer DJs in Armenia started his career in early 2000's. Deepening his love for electronic music he decided to work at a more professional extent. Just at the beginning of his career he was invited to take part in a radio show as a guest DJ, representing his music sets. Later he got involved in several projects and started managing the background music for a variety of events. Besides being a DJ, he is a co-producer of songs in collaboration with DJ Haik Solar.

This time Tour Info magazine had the chance to conduct an interview with DJs Haik Solar & Arni Rock, in an open-air cafe "Dalan" (Abovyan 12). They welcomed autumn with a warm song "Didn't I" (feat. Sone Silver) and are currently working on a new deep house track with Armenian ethnic elements. 12

Welcome To Armenia

As a result of a spontaneous decision two friends became colleagues and soon started producing and mixing dance music. “Both types of work are quite entertaining, anyway, we give preference to producing our own songs for us to be more established as musicians and create our own signature“, Haik mentions.

Last year their song "Tango with the wind" was noticed and included in the playlist of tango compilation for Giorgio Armani fashion show in Milan.

Talking about nightlife and parties today they mention that Armenian youth has become more active and enthusiastic to spend their free time to the full. “People attend our parties already in a party mood. Although very often new songs and remixes are not enough to entertain people“, Arni mentions.

Today the musical performance techniques have become more popular. “People need more entertainment and there is a tendency of performing musicians like Daft Punk, Disclosure etc. “, Haik says.

One of the hardest jobs ever is being a DJ, making people's days and being a part of their mood. This is the responsibility these guys can easily bear.

If you happen to be in Yerevan, do not hesitate to be a part of the events they host. Now You know whom to trust Your mood!

Mount Nemrut, Statues of Armenian gods

Nemrut

Mount Nemrut is one of the most interesting tourist attractions. It is part of the Taurus mountain range, above the Euphrates River valley and a grassy plateau. In 62 BC, King Antiochus I of Commagene built a tomb-sanctuary which consists of a tumulus and three terraces. On two of these terraces there are immense statues of lions, eagles, various Greek, Armenian, and Iranian gods, such as VahagnHercules, Aramazd-Zeus or Oromasdes (associated with the Iranian god Ahura Mazda), Bakht-Tyche, and Mihr-Apollo-Mithras.

The tumulus was created by heaping up the firstsize pieces of stone of which were left over when statues on two of the terraces were sculpted. The original height of the tumulus was 75m. In the course of time, its peak has been worn away.

Although the inscriptions at the back of the thrones on east and west terraces record that

Nemrut

Antiochus I had chosen this place as his tomb-sanctuary, research did not show any grave chamber or large cavity in the tumulus. The efforts to locate an entrance of any kind have also been futile.

The reliefs which showed the ancestors of Antiochus I are incomplete. It is believed that the tomb-sanctuary was not finished during the life of Antiochus I and was left as it was after his death.

EAST TERRACE This terrace consisted of a row of statues, three rows of low reliefs – two on the sides and one in the front -, a courtyard in the middle and a large altar of offerings opposite the statues. The presence of the altar indicates that the most important ceremonies took place on this terrace.

The row of statues began with the statue of a lion and one of an eagle and ended in the same order.

They have fallen down and their pieces are scattered in the courtyard. Between these guardian animals, from left to right stood the statues of Antiochus I, Aramazd-Zeus or Oromasdes MihrApollo-Mithras Vahagn-Hercules stood.

The five statues are lined on a common base. Their average height is 8 to 10 m. The bodies have survived in their original places. They are all represented frontally in a cliff position seated on thrones. The heads of the statues have at some stage been removed from their bodies, and they are now scattered throughout the site.

WEST TERRACE The west terrace consisted of a row of statues, three rows of low reliefs and a courtyard. One of the rows of reliefs is in line with the statues, the second flanks them on the south-east and the last group were set opposite them. This terrace didn’t have a great altar similar to the one on the east terrace. The entrance of west terrace was from the north terrace. Here a statue of a lion and an eagle stood.

NORTH TERRACE This terrace does not have any statues. It is thought that it was used as a place of assembly during the cult ceremonies. The remains of a wall of 80m, the stone sockets and slabs of sandstone have given the scholars the impression that this terrace was intended to be used to represent the kings who would come to the Commagenian throne after Antiochus I. It is obvious that the work was left as it was after the death of the king.
