Celebration of Terndez Candlemas Day

O

n February 14, 40 days after Christmas, Armenian Apostolic Church of all Armenians celebrate “Tyarnyndaraj” (Candlemas Day) or also known among people as “Terndez”, which means “The Lord is with you”. According to Gospel, 40 days after the birth of Christ Mary and Joseph took the baby to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord and consecrate to the temple. They met an old man named Simon who had asked God to give him such a long life to see the son of God. Hence, the holiday was created and named “Tyarnyndaraj”, which means “To come to meet the Lord, the Christ”. The celebrations of the holiday begin on 13th of February in the evening as per the church calendar the new day starts after the evening divine service when the fields and gardens are blessed. Accordingly, a festive bonfire is made in every churchyard for the newly married couples of the very year to jump over it. Then they take a candle light from the church and by that light make bonfires in their own yard as during the consecration of Christ to the temple people came to meet him with lamps and torches. The other day on 14th of February after the morning liturgy the ceremony of the blessing of newly married couples takes place in all churches to reinforce their love and loyalty alliances. Traditionally on the day of “Terndez” it is accepted to prepare some presents for the newlyweds when visiting them in their homes. Family members dance around the fire 3 or 7 times and jump over it. These numbers are believed to be symbols of fertility, and the fire represents light and purity, here the fire was also used for telling the future: if the flames faced south - east, the year would be plentiful and rich and the opposite, if they faced north - west.

HASANKEYF

T

he waters of Tigris River gave rise to the first settlements of the Fertile Crescent in Anatolia and Mesopotamia-the cradle of civilization. The ancient city of Hasankeyf, built on the banks of the river in southeastern Turkey, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world, spanning some 10,000 years. Hasankeyf and its surrounding limestone cliffs are home to thousands of humanmade caves, 300 medieval monuments and a unique canyon ecosystem-all combining to create a beguiling open-air museum. Among the site’s most important structures are the ruins of the 12th-century palace of the Artukid kings; the El Rizk Mosque, built in 1409 by the Ayyubid sultan Suleiman; and the 15th-century cylindrical Tomb of Zeynel Bey (the eldest son of Uzun Hasan, who ruled over the region for 25 years). The tomb is decorated with glazed blue and turquoise bricks in geometric patterns that suggest a significant artistic link between Central Asia and Anatolia. Aside from the spectacular heritage sites, thousands of caves exist in the cliffs that surround the city with old shepherd paths through narrow side canyons and along the tops of towering limestone cliffs. Many of the caves are multi-storied and water-supplied. Until 1970s many families still lived in the ancient cliff dwellings along the river, as for now, the number of inhabitants is comparatively lessen. Churches and mosques were also carved into the cliffs and numerous ancient cemeteries exist throughout the area as well.

REGIONAL PARTNERSHIP

I

PROMOTES RURAL TOURISM

n the recent years Armenia has started to have the experience of offering rural tour packages to the tourists visiting the country. In Armenia rural tourism means hiking, camping, bird watching, fishing, biking, mountain climbing, horse riding, cooking and eating with the local people, harvesting and milking cows and many more…Tastes differ - you only need to a have a wish and a decision which tour to select… During the recent years different tailor-made itineraries offering unforgettable experience have been offered by local tour operators who are doing business on incoming tours. And thanks to them, Armenia has become a favorite destination for people who are fan of rural tourism and every other service connected with that. However, in the fall of 2013 a new project launched which aims to promote rural tourism in an innovative way. The project is called “Promoting Innovative Rural Tourism (PIRT) in the Black Sea Basin”. So what kind of innovation are we talking about? The innovation of PIRT project is in trying to promote the itineraries and the services that rural tourism offers not only in Armenia but also in neighboring Georgia, Turkey and Bulgaria. “But what is the innovation in?” one would ask. The innovation is in creating a single touristic package with which a tourist will be able to travel and discover the wonders of rural areas of not one but four countries with one and the same package. The package which will offer the tourists up to ten different itineraries including but not limited to agro, eco, culinary tours, bird watching tour, cultural tour, adventure tour, UNESCO heritage sites tour, is called a Single Cross-Border Visitor’s Package. The project is funded by the European Union and is implemented by Heifer Armenia as a lead organization in cooperation with its partners in Georgia (Heifer Georgia), Turkey (Gumushane National Educational Directorate) and Bulgaria (Varna Economic Development Agency). The project aims to develop cooperation and partnership between the participating countries through fostering economic development in the region via promotion of rural tourism. Of course Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither cross border cooperation and joint efforts of rural tourism promotion can make wonders in a day; however a house is built brick by brick!
