HOLIDAYS MAKE GOOD MEMORIES: VARDAVAR IN ARMENIA

I

f you walk along the streets of the beautiful capital Yerevan and suddenly someone drench you with a bucket of water, then do not get surprised, but just keep laughing and get pleasure and maximum fun from the amazing holiday called Vardavar. Vardavar is one of the most ancient Armenian water festivals dating back to pagan times. This national-religious holiday is celebrated on successive 14th Sunday after Holy Easter. Vardavar (meaning “vard”-“rose” and “var”- “rise”) is associated with Astghik- the goddess of love, beauty, water and fertility. According to the tradition Astghik presented roses and poured water filled with numerous roses spreading love in Armenia, and her beloved God, Vahagn, protected and preserved that love. By another tradition, Vardavar is associated with Noah, who descending from the ark landed on Biblical Mount Ararat, ordered his sons to pour water at each other in the memory of the great flood. After the adoption of Christianity as a state religion Armenian Church revived this holiday which was deeply loved by people even nowadays. However, the renewed holiday began to symbolize Christ’s transfiguration or brilliance when Christ appeared on Mount Tabor in divine light in front of his three disciples- Peter, Jacob, John and Prophets Elijah and Moses. This year whole Armenia will celebrate Vardavar on 12th of July. The day will start with buckets of water, much fun, merrymaking, joy and happiness… This is a holiday that completely embraces children, the old and the young. They drench each other with water as a symbol of fertility, besides being just a tradition; it is just a perfect way of being refreshed on a hot summer day, which turns into a real holiday of water and entertainment when all around you can see many people in wet cloths at festive mood. Along with these, water of Vardavar is believed to be healing, thus everybody should get at least several drops of that water during the festival. So, welcome to Armenia where the celebration of Vardavar will delight you and the great impressions of this great holiday will accompany you even after leaving Armenia.

ADANA

A

dana is a town in Chukurova plain (historically known as the Cilicia plain), on the bank of the river Mehyan, an administrative centre of the homonymous Turkish vilayet. It is a major agricultural, industrial and commercial center. The city was once a Hellenistic cultural centre. Some monuments of that period have been preserved up to now. There is a stone bridge built on the Mehyan River during the times of Hustinyanos. The bridge was reconstructed in 743 and called “Zisr al Valid” after the name of the Ottoman Khalifa. When the crusaders were crossing Cilicia; Adana was under the reign of the founder of Hetumyan dynasty of Oshin. In the autumn of 1097 Adana was conquered by the Crusaders. When the king Levon A regained Cilicia in 1130-1132, Adana was united with Rubinyan Kingdom. In 12-14 centuries Adana was part of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia.

14

In 12-14 centuries different constructions were built in Adana, such as: The King’s Palace with St. Minas temple and the churches of St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) and St. Stephanos. The latter also had 2 churches which were called St. Hakob and St. Sargis, which were later on destroyed. At the beginning of the 20th century Adana had a population of 45.000 people, 12600 of which were Armenians.

DELICIOUS ARMENIA

A

rmenian cuisine is one of the most impressive things visitors are offered to explore in Armenia. While many people might think the cuisine of a certain country is just a means to feed oneself and quench the hunger, the idea of traditional cuisine extends far beyond that. The Armenian cuisine is an integral part of its rich national history, culture and is the interpretation of the country’s “face’’ and the people... Armenians are a nation with a rich history of hundreds of years; therefore they are the carriers of a huge culture and traditions. The geographical territory of historical Armenia has in its turn contributed to the development and enrichment of the Armenian cuisine, since then constantly appearing in a new environment Armenians have created a new cuisine based on the old one and combining the latter with new traditions. As a result, they have created such rich dishes, which make each Armenian feel proud of their great achievements throughout the history. Here are presented some of them, mostly loved by many tourists: Harisa is made of cracked wheat and chicken meat, mutton or beef. They are cooked in water and mixed until they turn into a porridge-like substance. During old times harisa was a ceremonial and a holiday dish usually served in the mornings after being cooked whole night. According to a legend Gregory the Illuminator after being released from the pit in Khor Virap monastery arrived in Vagharshapat and preached Christianity to the local pagans for 60 days. In order to give food to the poor he ordered to bring much oil and sheep after which the sheep were stabbed and cooked in large pots with cracked wheat. Then Gregory the Illuminator ordered the strong-armed men to mix the meat in the pots, and from here originates the name harisa from “hareq sa,” which means “mix this”. Khash is made of cow’s feet which are boiled in water until it becomes a jelly-like mass that is seasoned with garlic, greens and salt. Khash is usually consumed early in the mornings either served before the breakfast or comes to replace the breakfast. It is served with garlic, salt, lavash (flat bread) and various greens.

18

Tolma-Delicious, appetizing, delightful… This is how Armenian tolma is described. This dish is considered to be one of the pearls of traditional Armenian cuisine. It is usually made of grape or cabbage leaves. Among other must ingredients are ground meat (beef), onion, rice and various spices (savory, basilica). After all the ingredients are mixed together, they are stuffed into the grape or cabbage leaves, then folded and cooked. The word “tolma” comes from Urartian word “toli,” which means “grape vine.” Pasuts tolma is another Armenian food, which is made of seven different grainschickpea, bean, lentil, cracked wheat, pea, rice and maize. All the grains should be boiled. This tolma is called “pasuts” because the Christian New Year features the fast days, which end on Easter day (“pasuts tolma” means “fast day tolma”). It is said that the seven grains symbolize God’s divine number (“7”), which is associated with Divine perfection and completion.
