WHEN SUMMER CATCHES AN INNOCENT SMILE ‘’Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future’’

John F. Kennedy

C

hildren’s Day is recognized on various days in many places around the world to honor children globally. It was first proclaimed by the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in 1925 and then established universally in 1954 to protect an “appropriate” day. International Day for Protection of Children, observed in many countries as Children’s Day on June 1 since 1950, was established by the Women’s International Democratic Federation on its congress in Moscow (22 November 1949). Major global variants include a Universal Children’s Day on November 20, by United Nations recommendation. International Children’s Day is the day of mobilization of social opinion for child protection, observance of rights of children for life, education and leisure, for protection from physical and psychological violence, exploitation of child labor, as necessary conditions for construction of fair society. Armenia ratified the Convention on ‘’Children’s Rights’’ in 1992, after which the Law of Republic of Armenia ‘’Children’s Right’’ was adopted in 1996. 1st of June is a real festivity for children in Armenia carried out by different cultural and entertainment organizations not only in Yerevan but also in other regions of the country. Every year on this day there is much merrymaking, joy and happiness: the day is full of innocence, great hopes and smiling faces of children and their parents. As a famous Persian public figure A. Furutan once stated, “Children are like flowers, they require love, care, attention and the right conditions into which to grow, and we must not abuse them but show love and tenderness towards children and do it with utmost responsibility”. So, let’s protect our ‘’precious flowers’’ to grow up proudly in the lap of loving and caring ‘’nature’’; that is our parents and the society.

A LEADER PEOPLE FOLLOW

Dear Mr. Boyajian can you please tell us a little about your Armenian roots? How strongly you are connected with them? -I was born in 1952 and raised in Fresno, CA. My parents were first generation Armenians in the United States. They both spoke Armenian, but I grew up at a time when parents wanted their children to be “Americans.” So we were never taught the Armenian language, something I regret to this day. Nor did we as a family attend Armenian Church. Being Armenian in a town with many in our heritage was something to be respected and admired, but I was really raised more as an American than in the Armenian culture. How did you start your career and what was your first achievement in it? Has being an Armenian ever effected on your carreer? -After graduating from college with a degree in Economics, I began my career at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as a student, and was subsequently hired as a staff gemologist and later an instructor. I got into management, and at the age of only 34, was asked to become President of our prestigious institution. You could say that my first and greatest business achievement was becoming President of GIA. Armenians have a rich heritage in the gem and jewelry industry as designers and artisans, in particular, and I gained tremendous support from Armenians around the world as the President of such a famous and respected institute. 12

What stands behind your success? Which principles you usually follow in your leadership? -I’m a big believer in people, and feel my greatest strengths are in leading and motivating team members to achieve extraordinary results. I try to follow “The Golden Rule,” that is, to do for others what you would want others to do for you. I believe that when a leader lives life as an example to others, and backs up what he or she says with what is done, this becomes a guiding principle for developing devoted followers. Please, tell us about your book ‘’Developing the Mind of a Leader’’ and its mission. How do you lead and inspire people seeking for maximum success and positive results in their business? -I gave many speeches on leadership, and used the framework of my talks as a basis for writing my book on leadership. The catch phrase, “Your Path to Lead and Inspire People,” more or less captures my vision for writing the book. My belief is that leadership is caught more than taught, and that great leaders model a way of inspiring people to follow. My goal in writing the book was to provide a very practical book that would help young leaders, in particular, master the essential skills of leadership, and guide them on a path of achievement and success. Which qualities/characteristics do you think a successful businessman should have? In my book, I identify six key traits of leaders. I call them the Six Cs: Character, Charisma, Courage, Communication, Credibility, and Care. I think these are all essential ingredients, in one form or another, to master leadership and to allow one’s leadership to create business success. What is the motto of your life? -“Work hard, play hard.” I think working hard is critical to success in any profession or business. After working hard, one has to learn to work smart. And after that, one needs to have a degree of life balance, both with family and with friends, in order to live life outside of one’s basic work and career.

Armenia On the Path of Tourism Development Dear Arman, how do you assess the opportunities of medical tourism development in Armenia? Which are the means to promote the development of the latter? The indicator of tourism is ussually assessed on the basis of the development of hotel and transport infrastructure, legal order, support of the state, welfare of tourism in the country etc. It is obvious that the level of tourism competitiveness is an important component for the development of each country, and the growth of competitiveness is a serious matter nowadays not only for Armenia but also for many other countries. Armenia, especially Yerevan catches an attention with its high professional level of medicine, where new medical treatment methods are always practiced and used up-todate medical technologies and equipments; the latter gives us a privilage to compete with the European and other leading medical centers. The healthcare in our country today meets European high measurements, and in case we compare it with American and European countries, we will see that our country is especially attractive for the medical tourism, as first of all, the tariffs for the medical treatments and services are at low price which gives us a priority in the top list of destinations for medical tourism. Armenia can become an ideal opportunity for preserving the tourist’s health, as our country suggests not only combining the holidays and medical treatments, but also ‘’best price-best quality’’ combination for medical services, including the country’s rich historical heritages, active air connection, favorable climate and of course traditional Armenian cuisine. For the promotion of both medical tourism and tourism in general, one should form

18

and develop common tourism competitive advantages that will overcome the competitive powers while attracting thousands of visitors, earning much income etc. Could you please mention the annual number of visitors to Armenia for medical treatments? Unfortunately our country is lack of researches over medical tourism, however even in the total statistics of tourism the collection of data over arriving and departing tourists is missing; e.g. the aim of tourists’ arrivals and departures, their expenses, the structure of geographical distribution and many other such important information, that is why it is not possible to specify about the numbers, but taking into consideration the indicators yearly stated by the World Health Organization, we can say that the number of visitors for medical tourism is very low, but we should not forget that yearly we welcome hundreds of tourists for dental services as the dental treatments are available at very low prices. What can you say about ecotourism in Armenia? Ecotourism is comparatively a new concept in Armenia, but I can state, that the latter is one of the branches to provide dynamic growth in tourism all over the world, the main resource of which is the environment. Ecotourism assists the recognition and the understaning of the country’s natural and cultural heritages, as for the locals, it attracts them with the received incomes, because of this fact, people start valuing the environment more and more taking the latter as a source of income. Our country has all the opportunities to become one of the most favorable fields in the region. How do you find the solutions to the possible problems? During the process of tourism integration in our country both the state and its low level of recognition in the world play a great role. I think the country must economically promote the activity of healthcare centers, agro and eco tourism trying to make improvements in tourism services structure of Armenia.
