EREBUNI - YEREVAN THE CAPITAL OF MY HEART

T

he year of 2015 is marked with the remarkable and happy celebrations-the 2797th grand anniversary of our beautiful capital Yerevan.

The very special festival is presented as the biggest theatrical performance of the day, entitled as “From Erebuni to Yerevan”. The centuries-old history of Erebuni-Yerevan is shown here by new representations. Here one can witness the indescribable and breathetaking meetings of the past and the present, the old and the new. You can suddenly date back to the Urartian era and find yourself in the fortress of the Urartian king Argishti and even ride in his carriage. This celebration is a great chance for each visitor to take the chance for revealing the museum-fortress of Erebuni, discovering the old cuneiform report of the establishment of Erebuni that our powerful king Argishti the First inherited to our people as the eternal testament. However, the history of celebration of the festival is closely connected not only with the history of the ancient fortress Erebuni but also with the opening of the “Erebuni” museum-fortress. The first official celebration was held in 1968. In the same year “Erebuni” museum was opened on the hill of Arin-Berd. The festive procession of king Argishti continues its triumphal march to Republic Square, where many citizens greet them exclaiming the key words of the day “the capital of my heart”. Here the procession of king Argishti is fused with the parade of soldiers. The symbolic meeting of two powerful armies: the fighters of Armenian armed forces on one hand and the Urartian troops on the other... All the participants of this festival will welcome the parade of the flags of the 12 Armenian capitals. The festive high mood dominates over the city all day long. Everyone can witness beautiful open-air performances on the streets of Yerevan, concerts on 22 stages in administrative districts, exhibitions, etc. It has become a beautiful tradition to change the Northern Avenue into a masters’ street, where the exhibitions convey all the crafts and arts of old and new Yerevan. Moreover, on this masters’ street everyone can take part in the dance-show of Armenian national dance “kochari”. The festive celebrations will last in “capital of our heart” till late evening. The conclusion of the holiday will be a gala-concert in the Republic Square. A long live to our city that has come from the ancient times and is going to the centuries of the brightest future.

HOLY TRANSLATORS’ DAY The Miracle of Armenian Alphabet

E

very year the Armenian Church celebrates “The Holy Translators’ Day” on the second Saturday of October as the holiday of the Armenian literature and culture revived by the first translations, Mesrop Mashtots and his godsons Yeghishe, Moses Khorenatsi, Philosopher Davit Anhaght, Grigor Narekatsi and Nerses the Gracious. In general, nearly two hundred disciples of St. Mesrob Mashtots and St. Sahak are known by the name of “Holy Translators”. The disciples of this group are known as “Junior Translators”. The opening of the celebration takes place in Oshakan village, near the monument devoted to the Armenian alphabet. This year we celebrate the “The Holy Translators’ Day” on October 10. The invention of the alphabet in 405 became the token of preservation of Armenian identity as language and literature have many times saved the Armenian people from estrangement. Here is the story of how the Armenian letters were born. Mesrop Mashtots perceived the great danger that thundered over the preservation of state unity. He saw the solution to this problem became revelation of the Armenian alphabet and literature. Was it a dream or a phantom, nobody knows; Mashtots saw a hand writing characters while praying in a dream. As soon as he woke up Mashtots began writing the symbols he saw in the dream to create the Armenian letters. After opening the first educational institutes in Armenia, Mashtots began to translate the Bible into Armenian to create Christian literature. He translated it so perfectly that the famous French scientist La Croze called Armenian translation of The Bible the ‘’Queen of Translations’’. The first sentence to have been translated into Armenian from the “Proverb Book” of Solomon the Wise is “Attend wisdom and discipline; understand words of insight”, which testifies that Armenian alphabet is Our Lord’s grace to the Armenians. Long live to our saint translators, who created a unique culture and a perfect language, which give us opportunity easily to pronounce any word in our favourable language due to its sound system which contains 39 sounds, more than any other language in the world. The Armenian alphabet is phonemic; its uniqueness is the fact that each letter corresponds to one single phoneme, and each phoneme is always represented by the same letter. Moreover, everyone can notice the unique similarity and difference of the Armenian fonts at the same time as our letters differ from each other only by a single particle. For the Armenian people the Feast of the Holy Translators is one of the most favorite and beloved national-ecclesiastical feasts. Celebrating this feast, the Armenian Apostolic Church pays tribute of respect to the bright memory of our translators and teachers. The word “translator” means “interpreter” who comprehends and precisely understands the demands of the period. Our Holy Translators initiated the sacred work of creating the Armenian alphabet and literature in the most difficult period for the Armenians and became our saviors. 10

THE SUN ON THE GROUND

T

here are probably many Armenian ancient sun symbols but surely very few people know that the Armenians also had the sun symbol on the ground. How much it would be surprising but that symbol is the Armenian “tondir”. Since ancient times “tondir” was worshiped by the Armenians like other sun symbols and it is known as a symbol of Sun on the ground. Ancient Armenians made tondirs in resemblance with the setting of the Sun “going into the ground” (Sun being the main deity). The underground clay tondir is one of the first tools in Armenian cuisine, as an oven and as a thermal treatment tool. Everything that is made in pots and tondirs has Armenian origin, but only Armenians have underground tondirs and it isn’t accidentally that the secret of the special taste of Armenian dishes (khorovats (barbeque), fish, gata, lavash) stands behind the very tondir where the dishes are cooked. Other nations have borrowed tondir from Armenians and use it nowadays, but only Armenians are aware of the ritual meaning of it. Armenians have already been using tondir for thousands of years. On the stage of sun worshipping, Tondir is considered to be the symbol of sun on the earth. Pagan Armenians resembled tondir with sunset. Every time Armenian women baked bread or prepared food, they bent down before Tondir, which meant worshipping for deity. Unlike other nations the Armenians used tondir not only for cooking meals, heating the house but also for medical purposes: to warm and cure the affected. Obviously, the traditional tondir has a great medicinal effect. In ancient times it has been

12

situated in the center of the house symbolizing the “permanent sun” providing heat in the house. They used to put “kursi” on Tondir while covering it with a carpet and put their feet under it in cold days. Tondir had also a non-bacterial effect, for they used the cow’s dung as a fuel which is famous for its medicinal traits since ancient times. Formerly, Tondir had not only an important meaning in Armenian cuisine, but also in lifestyle. In traditional families Tondir was always identified with “home”. Though the rules of lifestyle have changed throughout the times, the custom of baking lavash, bread, gata and many other dishes in Tondir has remained unbreakable. And the smoke of tondir continues to mean the symbol of peace, unification and strengthening of the Armenian family and home. Since 2012 “Tonraton”- the Food Festival has been held in Armenia and on August 11, for the Navasard holiday (the old Armenian “New Year”, which was dedicated to Armenian pagan gods), it is featuring dishes cooked in the very forefather of the modern oven.

WORLD SMILE DAY

Armenian Humor from Pele Pughi to “Hedgehogs” and “Vitamin”

Pughi’s coat was worn out and had many holes on it, but he did not have enough money to buy a new one. Barely he bought a little piece of cloth, broke it into pieces and mended the holes on the coat. Noticing that, his Duke Melik Shahnazar makes a joke before the crowd: “Partly wear for luck, Pughi!” “Partly thanks, dear Melik”, replies our invincible jester. October 5 is the world smile day. The whole world celebrates a holiday, the ideology of which is “Smile! Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile”! The idea of this beautiful, happy and light-hearted holiday belongs to an American artist Harvey Ball who is the author of the symbol of the day-the yellow smiley face. This sun like funny image smiled to the world for the first time in 1963 when Harvey Ball created it by the order of “State Mutual Life Assurance” Company. Thereat Harvey could not imagine that his illustrated yellow smiling image will become the part of people’s everyday virtual communication domain. Later he thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smile and kind acts throughout the world. In 1999, Harvey declared the first Friday of October as a holiday to celebrate the world smile day as a protest against the commercialization of his “smiling” image. It is said, “If you joke, so you live”. It is true and, of course, we can not help touching upon the Armenian humor sparkling with wit that has always helped people to survive. The above mentioned joke belongs to an Armenian joker of the 18th century, Pele Pughi (literally - crazy Poghos - Paul). Pele Pughi was the jester of Lord Melik Shahnazar of Veranda region of Artsakh and was famous for his sharp humor. His jokes, 14

funs and fables along with entertainment and laughter have also didactic nature. Amazingly, his fables are known in Thailand as well. It is amazing… What do the joyful stories of the beloved hero of the Armenian folklore, who lived in the 18th century, have to do in that south-eastern Asian country in the beginning of the 21st century? However, a book of his fables was published in English, entitled “The Court Jester and His Duke: Tales from the Black Garden.” One of the Armenian famous merry-makers is Poloz Mukuch, an inseparable hero of numerous jokes. Humor has always been a part of Armenian life, and now we have great masters of humor whose jokes have entertained several generations. The main satirical magazine of the 20th century was “The Vozni” (“The Hedgehogs”), the first issue of which was published in 1954. And who does not remember these words: “Smile is the ornament of face; who smiles often, he is the happiest man”. These words had been greeting us from the screens during the TV show “Smile Home”. Many humorous people; actors, writers, art critics gathered in the true house of laughter and made the audience laugh for several hours. Nowadays Ashot Ghazaryan, a talented man, famous and beloved master of Armenian humor has prospered it. His humorous TV programs delight us till today. It is already several years that we have enjoyed the unique humor of modern humorous clubs whose cast have unique sense of humor, such as “32 Teeth”, “Vitamin” clubs, etc. Life becomes more beautiful, when we smile and live happily. Take everything easy, and everything will be all right. Smile often… As people say, “Laughter lengthens our lives”.
