Glorious May breathes victory in Armenia! Each month in Armenia is beautiful and unique by its own. There is not a single month that does not celebrate a holiday, and May is not an exception. With our ‘’open house’’ concept, which is truly a unique Armenian tradition, we welcome you into our homes and hearts. We literally open our doors to visitors and entertain our guests wholeheartedly- there is much feasting, merrymaking and joy to share… However, on the very first day of this month Armenia celebrates a holiday-the international labor movement. May 9 states the great triumph of the Soviet Union during World War II and the liberation day of Shushi, the heart of NagornoKarabakh in 1992. May 14 is a religious holiday called ‘’Ascension’’ or ‘’Hambartsoum’’ that is celebrated outdoors in the blossoms of May, 40 days after Easter. That is when at midnight the space stops its wheel and anyone who witnesses these magical moments will have their dreams fulfilled. And finally on 28th of May whole Armenia celebrates the establishment of the first Armenian republic after half a millennium of lost sovereignty. Along with these remarkable holidays, TourInfo suggests you ‘’a bright bundle of nice choices’’ to plan out perfectly the rest of your days in Armenia. I hope that all visitors will seize the opportunity to savor the unique Armenian hospitality and reveal its wonders during their stay. We certainly welcome you with our widely opened arms. So, take your chance with TourInfo to earn the best moments of your life by the inspirations of the last month of blooming spring. Garen Marcarian gm@ati.am

GENEALOGY

SIX DESTINIES & ONE STORY

T

Photos by Emma Marashlyan

he brilliant official slogan for the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 “Building bridges” inspired the Armenian Public TV Company to create “Genealogy.” Six artists from 5 continents of the world and Armenia were selected to represent Armenia in Eurovision 2015. Two basic characteristics connect the 6 artists (Essai Altounian-Europe, Tamar Kaprelian- America, Vahe Tilbian- Africa, Mery-Jean O’doherty 8

Vastmazian- Australia, Stephanie Topalian- Asia) - the first one is the blood running through their veins that carries Armenian genetics, national traits and the rich history of Armenia. The second one is music, which also unites genetically. We have built a bridge between the past and the present, Armenian genetics and world music, Armenia and Eurovision. This is the genealogy of history and music – it can be distinctly defined from the official logo that the life tree has strong roots and branches reaching out to heights with the shape of connecting molecules. The meaning of “Genealogy” is also interpreted in the symbol of the centennial of Armenian Genocide-“forget-me-not” flower representing the 5 continents where Armenians were spread during the massacres. And Armenia being the middle of the flower is the spotlight of the reunion of the roots, the big family. During the press conference to the question what would be their victory in Eurovision the artists unanimously stated, “The aim of “Genealogy’’ to build bridges in the harmony of love, peace and faith, therefore the song “Face the Shadow” brings forth the importance of such values for the reunion, strength and the preservation of genealogy itself and the realization of the latter would be our collective victory. We just want to make Armenians world wide feel proud”. In the end Essai Altounian stated the slogan he always follows in life, “Raise yourself, and raise others’’- that is to once more assure about the importance of reunion and the connection with the roots, their history and heritages. Really, the artists felt that indescribable connection among them, connection with not only strong power of music but also strong genetics that made them a “Genealogy” family. In the end, to be an Armenian doesn’t require any obligations, but it was highly appreciated when the artists were presented with Armenian passports by the hands of president Serj Sargsyan during their meeting, and that is really another side of “being an Armenian, a real citizen” of their homeland.

ARMENIA UNDER CELEBRITY BUZZ: THE KARDASHIANS’ GREAT EFFECT ON THEIR HOMELAND

‘’Armenia we are here! We are so grateful to be here and start this journey of a lifetime! Thank you to everyone who greeted us”. “I can’t wait to explore our country and have some yummy food’’.

T

his is how Kim Kardashian, the famous Armenian TV star of reality show expressed her feelings on the very first day of her family’s arrival in Armenia. Kim visited her ancestral homeland along with her husband, world famous rapper Kayne West, their daughter North, and sister Khloe Kardashian on the eve of Armenia’s greatest historical event to disclose the country, their roots, cultural heritages and the most importantly to commemorate the centennial of Armenian Genocide. Being a direct descendant of the Kardashians’ family that was forced to flee their homeland at the dawn of the 20th century Kim visited Armenia to give a respect to the members of her family, honor them along with others, who, just like her, are descendants of those perished, exiled, humiliated

10

and deprived of their homes. She certainly had that right, and her generous step on her homeland was highly appreciated by many Armenians. Yes, their trip was really a global spotlight to acknowledge about a small Christian country at the same time raising worldwide awareness of the Armenian Genocide carried out by the Ottoman Empire. One cannot but take into consideration the number of Kardashian’s followers only on Twitter with 30.9 million people which is about three times more than the number of Armenians as a whole. Another 29.7 million followers on Instagram and 24 million on Facebook once again prove that each word stated by Kim Kardashian is heard by millions of people. This means that Armenia, once less known to the world, in couple of days became the most searched and spoken about country on the Internet. After all, it would be of great disappointment not to mention the greatest PR that Kim generated for Armenia. It was even calculated how much it would take to get Western PR agencies to publish articles and make TV shows over Armenia. That amount was pretty impressive, that no one, including the government could do that much for Armenia.

Visit 4 Countries with 1 Tour Package

Y

ear by year rural tourism is getting more and more popular in the world. This is because people are tired of daily routine, pollution, stress, traffic, standard city tours with sightseeing and visiting museums and discovering the city life and entertainment and even participating in the cultural events. Today city dwellers get more and more interested in rural experience rather than urban life. In the framework of “Promoting Innovative Rural Tourism project funded by the European Union (and implemented by Heifer International Armenia with partners from Bulgaria, Georgia and Turkey), a Single Cross Border Visitor (SCBV) package has been developed. Tourists from all over the world will have the chance to discover the wonders of rural tourism visiting four countries with a single tour package. The tourists are only to decide what they want to explore, experience and enjoy by selecting any of proposed ten different itineraries- it can be a birdwatching tour, UNESCO heritage tour, wine tasting tour, culinary tour, agro and eco tours and many more. The official launch of the package was held on 19 March in Yerevan. This was a multinational event with more than 100 guests, including partners from Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Turkey and USA. Representatives from RA Ministries, Government representatives from

12

partner countries, representatives of foreign missions and embassies, international and local partner organizations participated in the event. The event was flavored with folk music as well as displays of national and traditional products and art. Tourists from all over the world will soon see by Euronews and other international channels four fascinating infomercials (commercials) inviting tourists from all over the world to visit the region. PIRT is a regional project directed at supporting regional cooperation and crossborder partnerships for economic and social development in four Black Sea Basin countries via promotion of rural tourism. SERJ TANKIAN AT “1915” THRILLER PREMIERE

O

n 25th of April the press conference over “1915” was held in Armenia -a psychological thriller that was set against one of the most horrible incidents of modern history. The film directed by the author of screenplay Garin Hovhannisian, follows one man’s controversial and dangerous mission to bring the ghosts of a forgotten tragedy back to life, to reality. The main aim of the film was to play a leading role in the global movement to shed a spotlight on all genocides of the past century. As co-director Garin Hovhannisian stated in the conference, ‘’We expect 1915 to be more than a movie. We have made this movie to serve not only as art or entertainment, but also as an act of defiance against the continuing silence, indifference and denial that have fueled an entire century of genocide’’. Co-director later added that the inspiration and the secret of the creation was herself the main heroine of the film- Angela Sarafian. Exactly 100 years after the Armenian Genocide, in 2015, a theater director in the film (Simon) is staging a play at the theater to honor

14

those perished during the tragedy- a horrifying crime forgotten and denied for a an entire century. But as protestors surround his theater and a number of mysterious accidents spread panic among his actors, we realize that Simon’s mission is more controversial than we think-the ghosts of the past are spying everywhere. The magic of the play won’t work, unless the actors, especially Simon’s enigmatic wife Angela face the truths that haunt their own lives. A very important figure worth to be mentioned in the conference was Serj Tankian, who being a Grammy Award winning musician, great composer and activist also put his own efforts in the realization of this film by composing its amazing soundtracks. As it seemed in the end, they are not going to stop speaking out and demanding; as it is still the beginning, the beginning of a new justified story... The Film has been screened in various cities of USA, Moscow, Berlin, and on 25th of April in Yerevan.

Erzurum

E

rzrum, also known as Karin, is largest city in Erzurum Province, situated on the left bank of the River Euphrates, 2000 meters above the sea level. Karin is one of the most ancient settlements of the Armenian highland. It was founded in the 2nd half of the 2nd millennium B.C. by the Armenian king Karanii, and thus - the name of the city Karin. After the partition of Armenia between the Eastern Roman Empire and Sassanid Persia in 387 AD, the city passed into the hands of the Romans. They fortified the city and renamed it Theodosiopolis, after Emperor Theodosius I. As the chief military stronghold along the eastern border of the empire, Theodosiopolis held a highly important strategic location and was fiercely contested in wars between the Byzantines and Persians. In 885, after the establishment of the Bagratid Kingdom, Karin was also included in the territory of Armenia. In 949, Byzantines conquered Karin back. The city of Erzurum itself had only one Armenian Apostolic Church, that of St. Astvadzadzin, built in 1838, as well as a small chapel said to have been built in 629. Armenian Church had six boys schools and one girls school in Erzurum. In the end of the 19th century and in the beginning of 20th century, there were number of colleges operating in Karin, including Aghabalyan, Galfayan, Hripsimyan, Msryan and Ter-Azaryan. Sanasaryan collage had its particular role in Armenian education.

20

After the Armenian Genocide, the entire Armenian population was completely finished off. Today, the city of Erzerum is mostly inhabited by Turks. It has some of the finest winter sports facilities in Turkey and hosted the 2011 Winter Universiade.
