WALKING THROUGH THE PATH OF

Dilijan National Park

D D

ilijan National Park, one of four protected national parks of Armenia, occupies an area of 240 km². It's located in the north-eastern part of Tavush marz (region). It's known for its forest landscapes, rich biodiversity, medicinal mineral water springs, natural and cultural monuments. It stretches over the slopes of the Pambak, Areguni, Miapor, Ijevan (Kaeni) and Halab mountain ranges at the altitude of 1070–2300 m above sea level. The mountain meadows above this altitudes do not belong to the national park. The River Aghstev and its main tributaries – the Rivers Hovajur, Shtoghanajur, Bldan, Haghartsin and Getik run through the national park. There are Parz Lich (Clear Lake) and Tzrkalich (Leech Lake) as well as other minor lakes. The flora of Dilijan National Park includes 902 species of vascular plants, namely Lycopodium, Horse-tails, Ferns, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. About 40 rare species of plants occur in this territory. 29 species of the flora are registered in the Red Book of Endangered Species of Armenia. The vegetation of the national park is of mesophilous Caucasian type mainly represented by forest associations. It mainly consists of deciduous species such as oak, oriental beech, common and oriental hornbeam, which form homogeneous oak, beech and hornbeam forests as well as mixed forests with different combinations of the species mentioned. Georgian oak forests occur on the southern slopes of the middle forest zone and oriental beech forests on the northern slopes. The most important cultural monuments located in the Dilijan National Park include Haghartsin Monastery (10-13th centuries), Goshavank Monastery (12-13th centuries), Jukhtak Vank(11-13th centuries), Matosavank Monastery (10-13th centuries), Akhnabat church (11th century). 14 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

Ejmiatsin Cathedral

THE ARCHITECTURE WORTH ADMIRING

T

he original church of the seat of the supreme Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church was built in the 4th century by the Armenia's patron saint Gregory the Illuminator following the adoption of Christianity as a state religion by King Tiridates III. From its foundation the cathedral underwent various changes both interior and exterior. The latest renovations started from 2012 and are ongoing. The design of Ejmiatsin Cathedral is classified as "a four-apsed square with ciborium'' called ''Etchmiadzin-type'' (Էջմիածնատիպ-Ejmiatsnatip) in Armenian architectural historiography having been uncommon in Armenia in the early medieval period. The cathedral has a cruciform plan with a central cupola, four free-standing piers and four projecting apses which are semicircular on the interior and polygonal on the exterior. The central piers, cruciform in section, divide the interior space into nine equal square compartments. The cathedral's external appearance has been described as "austere", "ascetic", "unostentatious", and as "a massive cube surmounted by a faceted cone on a simple cylinder. The northern wall of the cathedral contains two reliefs which depict Paul the Apostle and Saint Thecla and a cross with all arms of equal length with Greek inscriptions. The early frescoes inside the cathedral were restored in the 18th century. Stephen of Poland illustrated the belfry in 1664. In the 18th and 19th centuries Armenian painters created frescoes of scenes from the old testament and Armenian saints. Naghash Hovnatan painted parts of the interior between 1712 and 1721. His paintings on the dome and the painting of the Mother of God under the altar have survived to this day. Other members of the prominent Hovnatanian family-Hakob, Harutyun and Hovnatan, created paintings throughout the 18th century. Their work was continued by the succeeding generations of the same family-Mkrtum and Hakob in the 19th century. Eventually, along with several important early medieval churches located nearby, the cathedral was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. 16 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

T

he rich food history of Armenia is thought to span across more than 1,500 years, with many traditional cooking techniques still influencing the cuisine today. If you want to try one of them, this is right for you.

ARMENIAN NATION

The origin and formation

"The original Armenians must have been very adventurous. Their brothers, i.e. the other Indo-European tribes, went towards north or south, towards more fertile areas in Europe and India, while some decided to stay in Persia. But these Armenians went even further, in the heart of these impassable mountain regions and climbed as high as they could.” M. E. Elliot

B

ased on various historically proven sources, people have inhabited the Armenian Highlands since the Stone Age. The earliest possible record identified with Armenians, is from Armenic-Sumerian records from around 2700 BC, in which the Armenians are referred to as the sons of Haya; the regional god of the Armenian Highlands. Thutmose III of Egypt, also mentions the people of Ermenen in 1446 BC, and says in their land "heaven rests upon its four pillars". Moreover, geneticists have scanned the genomes of 173 Armenians from Armenia and Lebanon and compared them with those of 78 other populations from around the world. They found that the Armenians are a mix of ancient populations whose descendants now live in Sardinia, Central Asia and several other regions. This formative mixture occurred from 3000 to 2000 BC. Armenians share 29 percent of their DNA ancestry with Otzi, a man whose 5,300-year-old mummy emerged in 1991 from a melting Alpine glacier. Hayk Nahapet, the legendary patriarch and founder of the Armenian nation, settled at the slopes of Mount Ararat and traveled to assist in building the Tower of Babel, and, after his return, defeated the Babylonian king Bel on August 11, 2492 BC (Navasard) near the mountains of Lake Van, in the southwestern part of historic Western Armenia (present-day eastern Turkey). His story is told in the History of Armenia attributed to the Armenian historian Movses Khorenatsi (410 to 490 AD). From the etymological point of view, the name of the patriarch, Hayk (Հայկ) is the Armenian name for ""Armenia". Hayk is connected to ''hay''- Armenian(հայ) and ''hayer''-Armenians (հայեր). Since these times immemorial, Armenians have created a unique culture which you must discover while spending your summer holidays in the cradle of civilization. 26 TOURINFO MAGAZINE
