I September 2018 and we are celebrating our magazine's It's 115th anniversary. We value all those who are sharing this special event with us. 2003 was a notable year as we initiated this magazine and expanded it to this extent that we are celebrating 15 years of its foundation. These 115 years have been a combination of the happiest and bbest memories, new friendship and relationships. I have had my employees who were, are and will always be my h intellectual assets always standing by my side. A special thanks to my wife who has always supported me. What have I learned in these 15 years? To listen to what our h ccustomers and readers want. I started listening to my bbusiness partners and employees got engaged in cconversations to learn and find new ways of solving problems and creating a brand-new data worth sharing. p Of course, there have been so many rises and falls which taught us to be stronger and more motivated and move forward with no hesitation. The result is what we have now-trust, love, commitment, and support. Thanks for taking your time out from your busy travel schedules and finding TourInfo useful travel guide for your trip. We are always open to new suggestions and feedback to make our upcoming decades even more memorable! A warm thank you to all of our customers, staff members and partners as this journey would be impossible without you. Garen Marcarian Founder-Publisher

Independence Day Do you believe that there is no absolute independence? Actually, we as human beings are social organisms who live and depend on others thus having a relative independence as such. But what is independence for a nation, country or state? According to many international definitions, it's a condition when residents and population exercise self-government and sovereignty over a territory. Armenian history goes back to the prehistoric times when even the most powerful nations didn't exist. Throughout the centuries we have struggled against numerous tribes to retain our identity and independence. Though not having independence for ages, we managed to get to the 20th century and put the cornerstone of the first independence on May 28, 1918 announcing the foundation of the First Republic of Armenia. In 1920 it was taken over by the USSR leaving Armenia in the state of dependency. Surely, those years were prosperous for the development of the country; nevertheless, the people were craving for independence. Fortunately, on September 21, 1991, the people of Armenia voted in a referendum to proclaim independence from the Soviet Union. In the same year Armenia joined the Commonwealth of Independence States (CIS) gaining independence formally on December 26. Since then, Independence Day military parades have been held on Republic Square, Yerevan in 1992, 1996, 1999, 2006, 2011 and 2016. In general, the celebrations begin when the parade commander arrives at the Republic Square. After the arrival of the President and the Prime Minister, parade commander orders the troops to present arms for the Defence minister of Armenia. Armed Forces lead the parade. At the conclusion of the address, the parade formations shout a threefold "Oorah", followed by the playing of "Mer Hayrenik" by the massed bands of the general staff. The parade is then ordered to prepare for the march past, with armed linemen and markers from the Honour Guard Battalion of the Ministry of Defense of Armenia marching to their post in front of the central tribune to provide the security for the march past. The parade commander then orders the parade to march with the Corps of Drums from the Monte Melkonian Military Academy setting the pace of the parade. 26 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

Independence is a natural state which is in the veins of all Armenian people. Celebrate the day with us!

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO COME BACK TO A PLACE YOU USED TO

call home?

“Home is where our story begins…”

Y

ou know, there is a magic thing about home. It feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back, doesn’t it? Did it happen to you that you have to leave the place you were born in different reasons-work, education, travelling, and so on. I guess, yes. Surely, in the beginning you think that you are the happiest and luckiest person having that opportunity to live abroad. But after a while you feel emptiness inside. You start to compare everything with your homeland-habits and traditions, cuisine, people, nature, sometimes get irritated why these or those things aren't similar to your culture. Surely, you don't pay much attention to such things, until the worst feeling of loneliness knocks at your door; you realize that you aren't at home… You pack up your things, buy a ticket and depart! Have you noticed that your heart beats even faster when you see familiar places through the plane window? It's not about your physical condition, no, it's about love you feel towards your motherland/home just the way you feel when meet your lover after a long time. You get out of the plane, and the first breath of the fresh air brings consciousness and calmness to your mind. You relax, dear, cause you are home! You take the first walk around the places you used to pass by every day without noticing how beautiful they were. Now you admire and smile at those neighbors once you used to call grumpy and annoying. Even the old and dilapidated buildings seem to be great cultural heritages worth attention. The yummiest food: that healthy and delicious homemade food you have missed during the years of absence don’t leave you disappointed. You walk into the first cozy café and the host escorts you with a smile; you are delighted! Friends, oohh, sweet friends. How much you have missed them. They run a welcome party for you to remind that you are important for them. You feel loved and complete… You have found what you have been looking for such a long time. All in all, home is not just a location or building, it’s a combination of feelings like happiness, comfort, serenity, calmness, love and satisfaction brought together to us in one single place which we call home. Agree? 30 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

CITY HIGHLIGHT:

Yerevan

A

ncient culture, striking architecture and a dazzling nightlife- Yerevan is a city which will leave you awestruck and craving more. With an imposing Erebuni castle looming on the Arin Berd Hill, art and history museum galore, Yerevan is a contrasting city where you can experience Armenian culture at its finest as it’s always ready to bring you the ultimate tourist experience. While getting around the city, it’s best to walk, use public transport or Metro in central Yerevan. Car and bicycle hire are available from several companies or even outdoors. To get deeply into the habits and traditions of the city, the following 5 must-see attractions should be included in your trip schedule.

Yerevan ZipLine

Would you like some amount of adrenaline? The longest ZipLine in the region, built in Arabkir public park, Yerevan, is waiting for you. There are two directions-one from the administrative district of Arabkir to the administrative district of Ajapnyak (about 870 m) and the other from Ajapnyak to Arabkir (650 m). The height of zipline is 87 meters, part of which passes under the Davidashen Bridge.

Cascade Complex The building, housing the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, is

well known as “The Cascade Complex’’. Conceived by the architect Alexander Tamanyan (1878–1936), it aimed to connect the northern and central parts of the city. Later, Yerevan’s Chief Architect Jim Torosyan incorporated new ideas that included a monumental exterior stairway, a long indoor shaft containing a series of escalators, and an intricate network of halls, courtyards and outdoor gardens embellished with numerous works of sculpture bearing references to Armenia’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The Armenian National Academic Theatre of Opera and Opera and Ballet Ballet is located in the heart of Yerevan. It is not only a cultural National Academic hub, but also an architectural masterpiece designed by the Theatre Armenian architect Alexander Tamanyan. In 1937 the project was awarded the Grand Prize at the international exhibition in Paris.

Zoravor Saint Astvatsatsin Church

The oldest surviving church in Yerevan. It was previously known as Surp Astvatsatsin. However, the name Zoravor (meaning Powerful) was added because the church was home to the 13th century bible of Zoravor. The church is located in the Shahar District of Old Yerevan where the tomb and the Chapel of Ananias the Apostle were previously located.

A repository of ancient manuscripts, research institute and The Mesrop Mashtots Institute of museum holds one of the world's richest depositories of Ancient Manuscripts medieval manuscripts and books which span a broad range of subjects, including theology, philosophy, history, medicine, literature, art history, and cosmography in Armenian and many other languages. 34 TOURINFO MAGAZINE
