Publisher's Note October

The Month of glory and ripeness

That time of year thou mayst in me behold, When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang Upon those boughs which shake against the cold, Bare ruined choirs, where late the sweet birds sangg; In me thou seest the twilight of such day... William Shakespeare, Sonnet 73

Welcome to the most comfortable season of the year. It's time when the weather isn't as hot as in summer months but is still quite warm even at night. Though every season has its unique charm, there is something really special about in Armenia. The air temps begin to drop along with the crowds, the colors come out in the countryside. Moreover, October is a month of transition when the harvest offers the best options for food lovers. Are you a fruit lover? This is a great period for you to taste the most delicious and natural fruits like grapes, apples, pear, different types of berries, peach, and all GMO-free. Though most of the vineyards are for wine, red, purple and green grapes fill the Armenian markets. The season won't leave you without festivals and great events. You have a chance to take part in the history making ''Erebuni-Yerevan'' 2800th anniversary celebrations. Join Francophonie events starting from the 7th of October. Winelovers can taste the fine wines during the Wine Festival in Areni. Don't forget to color your evenings in various entertainment places offering high class services. Want the list? Look it up overleaf. No matter what the weather is like, when there is sun in your heart. Keep that sun up and enjoy your stay in Armenia-the country where everything is possible…

CHARLES AZNAVOUR ''She'' will never sound the same…

S

hahnour Varinag Aznavourian or worldwide known as Charles Aznavour passed away on 1 October, 2018 at the age of 94. The greatest chansonnier of all times sold more than 100 million records in 80 countries and had about 1,400 songs to his name, including 1,300 ones he wrote himself. Very often he was called as the French Sinatra due to his melancolic and stirring style. His biggest hit in English was ''She'', a 1974 romantic ballad in which Aznavour confronts the equal joy and strife in a relationship, nevertheless declaring “the meaning of my life is she”. It spent four weeks at No 1 in the UK singles chart, and was also recorded in French, German, Italian and Spanish. The song got a second lease of life when it was covered by Elvis Costello for the soundtrack to the 1999 film Notting Hill, reaching No 19 in the UK. Though he was born in Paris to an Armenian family, nevertheless he always considered himself an Armenian. Since the 1988 Armenian earthquake, Aznavour helped the country through his charity, Aznavour for Armenia. Together with his brother in-law and co-author Georges Garvarentz he wrote the song "Pour toi Arménie", which was performed by a group of famous French artists and topped the charts for eighteen weeks. There is a square named after him in central Yerevan on Abovian Street, and a statue erected in Gyumri, which saw the most lives lost in the earthquake. In 1995 Aznavour was appointed an Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Armenia to UNESCO. Aznavour was a member of the Armenia Fund International Board of Trustees. The organization has rendered more than $150 million in humanitarian aid and infrastructure development assistance to Armenia since 1992. He was appointed as "Officier" (Officer) of the Légion d'honneur in 1997. In 2004 Aznavour received the title of National Hero of Armenia, Armenia's highest award. On 26 December 2008, President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan signed a presidential decree for granting citizenship for the Republic of Armenia to Aznavour whom he called a "prominent singer and public figure" and "a hero of the Armenian people". In 2011 the Charles Aznavour Museum opened in Yerevan, Armenia. There are two main squares named Charles Aznavour Square in Armenia, one in Gyumri and another in the capital Yerevan. In April, 2016 Aznavour visited Armenia to participate in the Aurora Prize Award ceremony. On 24 April, along with actor George Clooney, he laid flowers at the Armenian Genocide Memorial. Unfortunately he couldn't take part in Francophonie events of 11-12 October 2018 where he was invited as a special guest. Rest in peace pride of all Armenians around the world. 10 TOURINFO MAGAZINE 10

A DAY TRIP

Hiking in Lastiver

A

utumn is one of the best seasons to enjoy the Armenian nature at its most. If you are searching for an unforgettable and an adventurous one day trip in Armenia, Lastiver will be a great destination. Usually such trips start early in the morning because it takes several hours to get to the marked location. If you choose Lastiver as your upcoming destination, be ready for 2 hours and a half drive either by tourist bus or other means of transport. In general the length of hiking is 6km, so to walk this distance, be sure that you are in a certain physical condition. In the case you take an individual tour, don't forget about one-day food, warm clothes (it's rather cold in Lastiver) and comfortable shoes for hiking. Besides, you can take a chance and fly with Zipline not far from Lastiver. Ticket fees to Lastiver aren't expensive. Usually about $10-$15 depending on the tour agency you choose. Be sure, that there is a less possibility to face fraud while searching for a fair agency as the majority of them really care for your comfort and safety. There are some additional fees for the entrance to Lastiver (about $2-$3) and Zipline (about $25). During the hike, you will feel like in a natural paradise. Small tree-houses, waterfall, caves, where the hermits used to live, are waiting for you to be discovered. To reach the caves, people once built a long ladder of logs. In form, it is more like a dam than a ladder. Therefore, people used to call it Lastiver, which means “up the dam". In the end, the path will lead you to a beautiful waterfall, which is formed at the lowest point of the gorge. In good weather, you will have an opportunity to swim in the cool water streams of the river Khachagpyur.

NAGORNO KARABAKH THE TREASURE MO OUNTAIN UNTA

Gandzasar monastery

G

andzasar is one of the best monuments of Armenia located in Nagorno Kharabagh (Artsakh). It's considered as the national architectural masterpiece. Gandzasar monastery consists of a church and gavit. St. Hovhannes Mkrtich (John the Baptist) church is based on a cross-cupola composition the four corners occupy two-storeyed galleries. The upper level is reached by steeply inclined console stairways, which tower parts have big carved stalactites on them. The exclusively rich architectural and decorative pattern of the interior and exterior renders a particular uniqueness to the church making it one of Armenian architectural masterpieces. Long rays of vertical supports emphasize the corners of the spacious structure serving as a framework for its central part. The unknown architect of the church has constructed an amazing drum. It is divided into 16 faces. Each of them is a masterpiece of decoration. The sides of each face are delineated by semi-columns. On four faces there are narrow windows with wide frames. Other four faces have round windows. All they are decorated. On two western faces are sculptural images of churchwardens symmetrically stationed. The two figures knelt with arms outstretched and hold the church model. As researchers think, they are Hasan Jalal Dola and his son Atabek, who had ordered to construct the church. On the other face there is a decoration featuring Christ and Adam and Eve on the window frame. On the southern three faces there are kneeling figures facing each other and halos around their heads. On the other face there are images of bull’s heads, the third contains a relief of the Virgin with child, on another one sees the bas-relief of an eagle with widespread wings. Want more information?
