letter from the editor...

Hello, Key Clubbers! We are already on the second month of 2020! There was so much that has happened in January. There was some good and some bad, but we made it in one piece. January was a little dry when it came to volunteer events, but February has so much in store for y'all. From Hot Chocolate Run this weekend to Multicultural Fair at the end of this month, there will be so many opportunities not only for service but lot of fun and memories. As we go forward, there will be fewer opportunities not only in general but also due to the increased number of activities and testing season. Especially for the upperclassmen, try to volunteer as much as possible prior to April and May. The recommended number of service hours for the entire school year is 50 hours,

so

keep

that

graduation. As mentioned previously, it is time to be thinking about elections for the 2020-21 year. I believe that running for an officer position is not only an opportunity to gain experience in a leadership position, but also to improve the club and make decisions so that all members have a wonderful and memorable year. This could also be a stepping stone into leadership positions beyond the club level, such as becoming Lieutenant Governor or hold a district position! If you have any questions about the elections or the roles of any officers, feel free to contact us! we will be more than happy to help. I can't wait to see what new memories this month will bring! High school flies by faster than you think, so make the most of every moment.

note from the president...

Hello, Key Clubbers!

CHANGES TO THE BOARD Several important changes have occurred in Garland High School Key Club this month that I want to inform y’all about. First off, I’m excited to announce that we have not one, not two, but three Lieutenant Governors (LTGs)! For the 2020-2021 Key Club year, Alina Dam, Tisha Gautam, and Anna Ngo will be overseeing various divisions, and I know they will all do well in their positions. Additionally, we have several other members with even larger ambitions. Both Vivian Thai

and

Katelyn

are

planning

to

and

at

LEDCON

for

either

district

or

international positions, so let’s support both of them as they set their sights high. On a more local scale, our own chapter has also incurred some changes during our February elections. Our newly elected board consists of: President Tiffany Doan, Vice President Vivian Thai, Secretary Dylan Dam, Secretary Tony Le, Historian Yi Wong, Editor Lilian Thai, Treasurer Christine Nguyen, and Webmaster Jake Wendling. You may have noticed, but we will have 2 secretaries next year rather than one. The board appointed Dylan as an additional secretary because we hope to expand membership next year, and another officer position may be needed. Additionally, having another position gives another member the opportunity to develop their leadership skills.

LEDCON Outside of the exciting new reorganization of the board, I also want to advertise LEDCON, the leadership education district convention, to everyone. LEDCON is an event where you can meet Key Clubbers from all over Texas and Oklahoma, participate in district elections, and learn more about the workings of the club. It’s a wonderful experience that’ll take place in April, and I recommend members attend if they’re available. If you’re interested, please contact me.

FINAL NOTES Outside of Key Club, February was also Black History Month. Garland High School hosted several events that honored influential African Americans in US history, so I hope everyone was able to learn something during this month. In addition to Black History Month, February also experienced a significant rise in coronavirus. The disease is prominent throughout the entire world, and I’m hoping we’ll be able to help. Projects may include fundraisers or raising awareness on how to remain safe and healthy. Therefore, be on the lookout for those events!

Yours in Service,

WRAPPING UP THE YEAR Nallely Maciel • Historian

As senior year is coming to the end the club has prepared for next year. Last week we held our elections for officers for the following school year. It made me quite sad that I will no longer be an officer of this club

next

year

as

I’m

moving

for

college. It makes me think about my first time joining the club and then eventually running for a club officer position. When I first joined I didn’t know that volunteering was actually fun and it quickly became a hobby of mine. I’m glad that now whenever someone asks me what I like to do for fun I can what

I’m happy for what is to come for the following school year with the new board. I know that our new board is full of ambitious, hard-working, and incredible people. I know they will do amazing next year with their new positions and I can’t wait to see what the future of the Garland High School Key Club will look like.

ALL ABOUT ELECTIONS Tisha Gautam • Secretary

This month is when we had the exciting opportunity to vote for the student leaders who will guide us during the next Key Club year. Key Club is a club devoted to serving the community.

I’ve

even before the start of the school year, and

I

While volunteering as a Key Club member, I have learned the importance of giving back and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time in this club full of servant students. From the beginning of the year until now, my

view

of

Key

Club

has

drastically

changed. Even before day one, I had been pressured into joining several clubs including Key Club. When I joined the Key Club at my school, I viewed it negatively just because I was forced into it. I would just sign up for volunteer events to get my required hours to stay in the club. I didn’t enjoy volunteering or

parts

of

this

event

was

Scholastic

Books donating dozens of children's books, for all grade levels. We organized the books by level and handed each kid a book as they took pictures with Santa. I vividly recall one little girl curled up in the corner with her new book, excited to enter the new world and adventures it would take her. The bright smiles on the childrens’ faces were

of

I don’t like being the center of attention and working behind the scenes is what I’m used to. Being part of the board has been fun, as each person has a specific job and we get a lot done during our meetings. We’ve become great friends as we are the members that attend events the most often as well. Overall, Key Club has had a positive impact on my life. I may not be as committed as some of the other officers, but I still do my part and enjoy being a part of this amazing club.

MAJOR EMPHASIS PROJECT PROMOTIONS

Thirst Project is a nonprofit organization that works with the support of young people to END the global water crisis by building freshwater wells in developing communities that need safe, clean drinking water. Why Water? Waterborne diseases kill more children every single year than HIV, Malaria, and all world violence combined. Small children typically do not have strong enough immune systems to fight diseases like cholera, dysentery, or schistosomiasis.
