2018 TRAPS AWARDS The Garland Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Department received two awards at the 2018 Texas Recreation and Park Society North Region Conference held in Rockwall, Texas on October 19, 2018.
Professional Etiquette took home the award for Lone Star Programming, which recognizes an innovative first time program. This program is a collaboration between parks and recreation, the police department, and the school district to supply teenagers with the tools of empowerment and encouragement needed to apply for and become employed at local businesses. Topics covered how to dress for interviews, eye contact, shaking hands, and mock interviews. Recreation Supervisor, Lavette Ervin and Officer Wendy Sheriff shared this program with six high schools in Garland in the 2017-2018 school year.
Ashley Wakefield received the Horizons Award, which recognizes a young professional for exemplary advancement of the recreation and parks profession and making outstanding contributions to her department. Ashley has worked at Fields Recreation Center and Granger Recreation Center for the past 4 years. In her tenure, Ashley has improved revenue generation and program attendance, improved center operations, and exhibited excellent customer service and managerial skills. Her “outside the box” mentality and ability to work individually and in a group environment has resulted in an increase in programs and events offered by Garland parks and recreation.
Ashley Wakefield accompanied by Managing Director, Jermel Stevenson. Accepting the award for Professional Etiquette was Ashley Wakefield, Rhenique Williams, and Managing Director, Jermel Stevenson.

Dramapalooza Performance at the
GRANVILLE ARTS CENTER Dramapalooza, created in 2003, gives adults with various disabilities the opportunity to learn all about musical theater performance and production. Each year a group of 15 to 20 performers embark on a journey to learn lines, songs, dances, and more in an intense program culminating in a public performance. Lory Stewart, a former teacher for the Garland Independent School District, adapts or creates a different musical each year for the group. The performers are exposed to the full cultural arts experience through this class. Productions include costuming, scripts, solos, group musical performances, choreography, and teamwork. Each element of this unique program helps to promote independence, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging. Accommodations are made to meet the needs of each performer, which include individuals who are non-verbal, individuals who use wheelchairs and individuals with social anxiety. No part is a small part in Dramapalooza—every participant is given a chance to shine bright on stage regardless of ability.
The 2019 performance will be held on Sunday, January 13, at 2 PM in the Brownlee Theater at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St.

26th Annual Trout Lily Nature Walk at the Spring Creek Forest Preserve Photo credit: Kenneth Wickline
Trout Lily Nature Walk 2019
The Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest will host the 26th Annual Trout Lily Nature Walk on February 23.
The Trout Lily is one of the first wildflowers to begin flowering each year. Its natural habitat is found in hardwood bottomland forests that have had very little impact from the built environment. The flowering period is only 2 to 4 weeks long and the entire plant cycle is complete in about 10 weeks. Nature walks will take place between 10 a.m. and noon. The walk is free to the public and begin in the park pavilion at the Spring Creek Forest Preserve, 1770 Holford Road. The walk is designed for both novice and advanced naturalist, and is an excellent way to learn more about our local environment from volunteers including Tom Frey, a regionally acclaimed naturalist. The Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest meets the first Tuesday of each month at the North Garland Branch Library, 3845 N. Garland Ave., from 7 to 8:30 p.m. To learn more about the Society for the Preservation of Spring Creek Forest or about this event, call the Parks, Recreation and Cultrual Arts Department at 972-205-2750 or visit SpringCreekForest.org.
