Less Is Best
The most effective way to reduce waste is to not create it in the first place. Confused about how to dispose of packaging or feeling guilty for putting something in the trash? Next time you make a purchase, look for products that use less packaging or that can be refilled.

Recycle right by following these simple recycling rules: • Recycle your empty, clean and dry bottles, jars, cans, boxes and papers only. • Keep your recycling loose in the blue cart. • Do not place plastic bags, food, liquids, diapers, hoses, wires, batteries, Styrofoam to-go containers, napkins and paper towels in the blue cart.
Hot tip! Plastic containers that come from the kitchen or bathroom that have lids are usually recyclable. Use the WasteWizard if you are in doubt to learn how to properly dispose of and recycle hundreds of items.

Recycling Matters 86% of the jobs in the waste industry are in recycling, reuse and remanufacturing. Recycling creates jobs and contributes billions of dollars to the economy. In fact, the Texas recycling industry employs more than 17,000 Texans annually. Do you know anyone who works hard keeping materials out of the landfill?

Think REUSE — share your unused paint with friends or family who could use it instead of throwing it away!
Parting with Paint
Do not place paint cans in the blue recycling cart, the brush and bulky goods pile, or the green trash cart. Why? Not only is paint considered a household hazardous waste chemical but improperly disposed of paint makes a mess. Garland residents should bring all paint and other household hazardous waste to the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center for free. 11234 Plano Road, Dallas, TX 75243, 214-553-1765 20

Litter-less Using less single-use items and making the choice to reduce waste reduces litter. Single-use food packaging like wrappers, bags, straws and napkins make up a large portion of litter found across the country. Not only is litter unsightly, but cleaning up litter costs the DFW area about $23 million annually.

When in Doubt, Throw It Out
Wishcycling is placing an item in your blue recycling cart because you hope it's recyclable. Only certain items are acceptable in your blue recycling cart. Even if an item is recyclable, it may NOT belong in your blue recycling cart. Trying to recycle unacceptable items contaminates your recycling, making recycling trash.
Questions about an item? Check out the Waste Wizard at GarlandWasteWizard.com to learn how to properly recycle or dispose of hundreds of items.

Lettuce Taco Bout Food Waste Reduce your environmental impact by wasting less food. Next time you go to the store, make sure you know exactly what you need by meal planning and making a list so you only buy what you need. Make a point to eat, use, freeze or preserve all the food you buy every time.
Remember, never place food in the recycle cart. If you have to throw food out, compost it or throw it in your green trash cart. Food placed in the blue recycle cart is contamination and makes the entire load trash.
