Garland Summer Musicals Announces 2014 Season Garland Summer Musicals will open their 2014 Season with the magical musical and film classic Peter Pan June 13-22. Pan has been made famous by stage stars Mary Martin and Cathy Rigby. ZFX will provide the flying effects for the GSM production of Peter Pan. Thoroughly Modern Millie is based on the 1967 Julie Andrews film. It’s the story of Kansas farm girl Millie Dillmount who comes to New York in 1922 to become a “modern” flapper, find a job and marry her boss. Millie’s New York experience has a lot of hilarious twists of fate and fortune! Both shows will be Directed by Buff Shurr and Produced by Patty Granville. Set Design by Kelly Cox; Lighting Design by Susan A. Business for the Arts Award Honors Patty Montagno The 25th Garland Cultural Arts Commission’s Business for the Arts Award honors Patty Montagno and The Sachse News. Patty is an amazing lady with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a degree in Theater/Arts from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She has performed as a professional dancer at Disneyland in California and in New York City she choreographed an Off-Broadway revival of Pal Joey starring a young John Travolta. She has also appeared in the Radio City Music Hall Christmas production. Patty has been active in the City of Sachse serving as Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Board and Chairman of the Sachse Chamber of Commerce. She is also a charter member of the Citizen Police Academy. Her position with The Sachse News

enables Patty to energetically spread the word about the Arts in Garland through her columns, stories, reviews and photography. One of her many Texas Press Association awards was given for her photograph and story of hopeful performers waiting for their chance to audition at GSM. Patty Montagno has worked tirelessly to bring attention to the artistic opportunities offered by the Garland arts organizations. She was inspired by the caliber of entertainment and wanted to make sure people everywhere knew about the Arts in Garland. The Arts Commission thanks Patty Montagno, one of the most energetic Arts advocates in our community, and would also like to thank the Garland Chamber of Commerce for recognizing the importance of the arts in the Economic Development of Garland.

The Garland Cultural Arts Commission presents the 2014 GISD High School Art Competition. Cash awards will be presented during a reception on March 6th at 4:30 p.m. at the Granville Arts Center honoring all the students who entered the competition and their Instructors. This marks the 27th year for the GCAC, Inc. Awards. The GCAC/GISD Senior Art Show will remain at the Granville Arts Center March 4-18. The Gallery Space is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and during all night and weekend performances.

Join the Granville Arts Center’s presentation of Roxanne Mather’s “Forest, Feathers, and Fur” March 21-April 29. The series portrays animals, birds, and other wild life that lives and thrives around White Rock Lake. Though each painting has merit to stand on its own, silhouettes of birds and tree branches have been incorporated throughout the series to interconnect them into a cohesive collection of work. Line work has always been an important part of Roxanne Mather’s style and expression. It is represented in this series, through fading stripes in the background of several paintings, as well as sturdy black lines outlining and defining the elements that exist within the paintings. The Gallery Space is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m.5 p.m. & during all performances.
UMDF Walkathon raises funds for research The United Mitochondrial Diseases Foundation is excited and energized to be able to reach out to the community to raise awareness as well as support those who are fighting mitochondrial disease in our area. On March 29, The Energy For Life Walkathon offers all participants a funfilled experience with entertainment, refreshments, mitochondrial disease resources and much more! Registration opens at 10 a.m. (rain or shine) at the Plaza Theatre. The walk kicks off at 11 a.m. For more information about the Energy for Life Walk visit www.umdf.org.

Who will be the next to wear the most beautiful crown in the Lone Star State? The Texas International Pageant system celebrates women for their achievements by honoring ladies ranging in age from 13-57 at the Brownlee Auditorium.
