who are non-verbal, individuals who use wheelchairs and individuals with social anxiety. No part is a small part in Dramapalooza—every participant is given a chance to shine bright on stage regardless of ability.

2016 TRAPS AWARDS Garland received the 2016 Excellence in Programming Committee’s Choice Award for “Dramapalooza,” a theater arts program for adults with special needs.

The award was given by the Texas Recreation and Parks Society North Region at their annual conference at the Plano Centre on Nov. 4. Dramapalooza, created in 2003, gives adults with various disabilities the opportunity to learn all about musical theater performance and production. Each year a group of 15 to 20 performers embark on a journey to learn lines, songs, dances and more in an intense threeweek program culminating in a public performance at the Granville Arts Center. Lory Stewart, a teacher in the Garland Independent School District, adapts or creates a different musical each year for the group. The performers are exposed to the full cultural arts experience through this class. Productions include costuming, scripts, solos, group musical performances, choreography and teamwork. Each element of this unique program helps to promote independence, self-confidence and a sense of belonging. Accommodations are made to meet the needs of each performer, which include individuals

The inaugural performance was The Wizard of Oz and held in the small theater at the Granville Arts Center. The shows over the years have included major musical hits as well one-of-a-kind shows created around the performers themselves. As the years have passed, the performances have grown, evolved and been moved to the large theater, drawing in close to 200 audience members each year. “Anyone who has seen or been involved with the program will tell you that from the moment it starts, you can’t help but smile and immerse yourself in the joy and excitement that radiates from the stage,” said Recreation Services Supervisor Heather Lambert, who is pictured below receiving the award. Dramapalooza’s next performance is at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St.

DO YOU KNOW

HOW GARLAND WAS FORMED?

‘OLD’ DUCK CREEK In 1874, the first store in this area was built in ‘Old’ Duck Creek. This store eventually became the first official post office in the Garland area. The ‘Old’ Duck Creek business district was located along the west bank of Duck Creek (around the present-day Avenue B crossing) roughly in the area along Garland Road. The Duck Creek post office and most of the business district were lost to a fire in February 1887. TOWN OF EMBREE Also in 1886/87, the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe (GC&SF) Railroad purchased a portion of the William Tinsley Farm and established the competing Town of Embree along its rail line, including a post office somewhere in the vicinity of present day Avenue C. TOWN OF ‘NEW’ DUCK CREEK The Township of ‘New’ Duck Creek was also formed in 1887, mostly by the relocating businessmen of ‘Old’ Duck Creek. This town was established south and east of the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas (MK&T) and the GC&SF railroads. Embree attempted to absorb ‘New’ Duck Creek, whose residents resisted. From February to December of 1887, the two communities grappled for the post office.

GARLAND BUSINESS DISTRICT EMERGES Tired and bruised by the dispute, the ‘New’ Duck Creek residents petitioned Congressman Jo Abbott to mediate and help reach a solution. Abbott prevailed upon the Post Master General to select a location half-way between the two disputed sites. In December 1887, the Post Master General relocated the post office halfway between the two communities (somewhere within the boundaries of the present-day Square), naming it Garland after then Attorney General Augustus H. Garland. This decision anchored the Downtown Garland business district including the square and surrounding area. The two townships united under the Garland name, incorporating on April 18, 1891, with an in-town population approximating 500. Learn More

ECOLOGY + EDUCATION = ENJOYMENT! Several groups have been busy to bring you a natural experience in one of Garland’s most unique ecological environments.

2

1

Students from the 2016 class of North Texas Master Naturalists with support from Garland’s own Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest and the Garland Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department compiled information for you to hit the trail and guide yourself through the Spring Creek Park Preserve. The thirteen markers along the looping trail identify some of the primary ecological features. By following the markers, you will arrive back at the start of the trail with a better understanding of the ecology of this outstanding example of prairie and forest. The markers are keyed to areas of ecological importance such as the blackland prairie, the forest edge, Spring Creek itself, the importance of leaving downed trees in place, and the strata of fossil layers that make up the limestone walls of the creek. There are two ways to see the trail information: 1. Before leaving home, download and print the tri-fold flyer PDF file and carry it with you while you enjoy your walk. 2. While at the Preserve, use your smart phone or other device to access this web site with the trail information, springcreekforest.org. Note that cell reception may vary throughout the walk. Enjoy your walk!

4

The self guided tour starts at 1787 Holford Road, Garland, Texas. Here is just a sampling of a few of the things you will see on your adventure. 1. Wildscape - an example of landscaping with native plants. 2. Edge Habitat - areas where two ecoregions come together. 3. Limestone Prairie - a small section of prairie where limestone lays only inches under the soil. 4. Snags - a standing or dead tree that supports the biodiversity. 5. Biodiversity - each species no matter how small, plays an important role in sustaining the life of the ecosystem. 6. Trout Lilies - only visible for two weeks in February. Plan to join the Society on February 25 for the 24th Annual Trout Lily Walk. For more information please visit springcreekforest.org.
