14 - Summer 2016 Cordae Gatson has the ground in sight as he begins his descent.

Gatson prepares to repel the “Drill Tower” by wearing the appropriate safety gear.

The Duck Creek Adventure Camp is one of several camps offered for youth each summer. The program was created to introduce the many benefits that come from connecting with nature and being active. It’s early in the morning when the children start to stroll in one by one. Too early for them to even think about the day’s adventure awaiting them. The twenty five children participating in the Duck Creek Adventure Camp will board a bus in less than an hour to make their way across town where the Fire Department will be waiting for them. They will not be testing their abilities to fight fire this afternoon. No, the children

will be scaling a five story building known only as the “Drill Tower.” Even the seasoned fire veterans admit that less has sent grown adults home who couldn’t muster the courage for the feat. But these children have no fear. One by one, they don the safety gear and “hop” over the edge. Two feet firmly planted to the brick wall and both hands gripping the orange rope, they start their descent. Slowly but surely they belay down inch by inch and foot by foot. For every inch they get closer to the ground, their confidence in themselves and the team soars. Their sense of adventure has become acutely attuned to these high octane activities with not a second thought of the school classroom that looms ahead at the end of the eight-week camp. When their feet get back on the ground, they are off again maybe to a nature museum or

perhaps for a dip in the pool. One thing is for certain, the stories they will be able to tell their classmates in August will sound like five story tall tales. The Duck Creek Adventure Camp is housed at Audubon Recreation Center in Audubon Park - just a short walk from the beautiful Duck Creek Greenbelt. The park and trail offer the perfect setting for outdoor hikes, archery, fishing, canoeing, and even outdoor cooking. Field trips highlight natural areas and open spaces, conservation and outdoor types of recreation, such as state parks and wildlife sanctuaries. The activities and outings are designed to encourage trait development such as teamwork, service, confidence, leadership and safety. 
