No meeting in January This free event is a chance for memory caregivers to provide a social activity for their patients and loved ones while they get a chance to unwind themselves and network with other caregivers.

Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Thursday, Jan. 17 10 a.m.

Join us at the Carver Senior center for a free celebration of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. with a one-man hit play. From Montgomery, Alabama to Memphis, Tennessee, Steven Lowenstein takes you through the greatest speeches and sermons of all time. Light refreshments will be served.

FREE Chair Exercise Mondays and Thursdays 10 a.m. These chair exercises are simply modifications of familiar exercises and a gentle way to build muscle strength and stay flexible.

Talk Tuesdays Tuesdays 10 to 11 a.m. Join us for a morning of conversation on different lifestyle topics, such as home, family, food and entertainment, and health and fitness.

We rotate between Dollar Tree, The 99 Cent Store and Big Lots on Tuesday. Wednesday is Walmart. The bus departs from Carver at 10 a.m. Bus will return in time for lunch.

Red Hat Club

Refresh your driving knowledge, including the rules of the road, traffic hazards, collision prevention and night driving. Become more informed, better prepared for the road and a better driver. A $15 AARP member and $20 non-member supply fee is payable to the instructor at the start of class. Cash and checks only – no credit cards. Students arriving after the scheduled start time will be turned away and not accepted for the class.

Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays 8:30 a.m. A 45 - to 60 - minute low-impact workout that blends an aerobic workout with strength training. Mondays and Fridays 10:20 a.m. This is a fusion class implementing elements of traditional Pilates along with some heart-pumping strengthening exercises.

Tuesdays 10:30 a.m. Train with a sixth-degree black belt. Feel safer, more confident and more agile. The instructor will use moves specific to seniors, their needs and abilities.

The Garland Senior Activity Center and the Carver Center are recreation centers for adults 55 and older, offering an extensive variety of activities and classes intended to enhance and enrich the lives of active adults in our community. The centers are not a licensed adult day care facility. All paid and drop in activities are designed for independent participation. Staff does not provide direct supervision or personal care and does not monitor participants coming and going. Participants requiring assistance need to be accompanied with a caregiver or assistant while at the center.

Medical Transportation

The City of Garland offers a free medical transportation service for Garland resident seniors 60 years of age and older to their local Garland medical appointments. This limited service is intended for seniors who have no other means of getting to and from their local medical appointments. Please call 972-205-2890 for more information.

Nutrition & Transportation Program

The nutrition program is a daily lunch program that ensures a nutritious lunch for senior citizens. On a limited basis, free transportation to both senior program locations is available to seniors, age 60 and older, living in the city of Garland, who participate in the nutrition program. Meals are served Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. Paperwork must be completed before being able to participate in the program. Please call 972-2052769 for additional information. This service is supported, in part, by the Dallas Area Agency on Aging (DAAA), the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) and Dallas County.
