Garland Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Partners with Garland ISD to Win Award On March 10, 2021, the Texas Recreation Parks and Recreation Society (TRAPS) awarded Garland Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts with the 2020 Arts and Humanities Achievement Award. Garland Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts along with Garland Independent School District (GISD) hosted “Big Art Day” in Audubon Park on March 5, 2020. This hands-on event focused on art education and featured many activities for more than 1,000 attendees from the Garland community to enjoy and engage in, including steamroller art, make-and-take art, live music performances and more. Big Art Day was created to raise awareness of art education and art as a creative force in our communities on a large statewide scale. The Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) set a goal to engage all art educators, their students and communities in a single-day art event. This inaugural hands-on event focused on art education with live art demonstrations, performances by GISD students, games and food trucks. By joining with the TAEA, the City of Garland Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Department and GISD met the goal of bringing art educators, art students and the community together in the park for a celebration of all things art. Garland is proud of its multicultural heritage and seeks to actively support its multitalented residents. The Big Art Day event was a great way of showcasing the talents of those who call Garland home while cultivating the appreciation and importance of art in the community. Due to the event’s epic success, it is planned to be hosted again in 2021. GARLANDPARKS.COM · 972-205-2750  25

Special Olympics For the safety of all athletes and coaches, the City of Garland will continue to follow the guidance provided by the Special Olympics Texas Area Office and local coaches. We look forward to resuming games and practices as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.

P E R F O R M A N C E Dramapalooza, created in 2003, gives adults with various disabilities the opportunity to learn all about musical theater performance and production. Each year a group of 15 to 20 performers embark on a journey to learn lines, songs, dances and more in an intense program culminating in a public performance. Lory Stewart, a former teacher for the Garland Independent School District, adapts or creates a different musical each year for the group. The performers are exposed to the full cultural arts experience through this class. Productions include costuming, scripts, solos, group musical performances, choreography and teamwork. Each element of this unique program helps to promote independence, confidence and a sense of belonging. Accommodations are made to meet the needs of each performer, which include individuals who are non-verbal, individuals who use wheelchairs, and individuals with social anxiety. No part is a small part in Dramapalooza. Every participant is given a chance to shine bright on the stage. The 2021 performance will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, at the Plaza Theatre in Downtown Garland. GARLANDPARKS.COM · 972-205-2750  27
