mabeo Mabeo is a furniture and accessories brand from Botswana, Africa with a global and local focus. It is a result of over 10 years of making bespoke furniture for commercial projects locally. Mabeo has engaged the design world consistently since its 2006 international product launch. The aim of the brand is to make the work of African artisans available to the world in a considered way, through thoughtful collaboration with the best international designers. Good design, high quality, craftsmanship, use of sustainable materials, culture, people and community development are the main tenets of the brand. Mabeo has been in collaboration with renowned international designers including Calesson Koivisto Rune, Garth Roberts, Luca Nichetto, Patty Johnson, Patricia Urquiola and Studio Noi; as well as participated in highly regarded international design events such as Milan Design Week, Stockholm Design Week, London design festival and New York Design Week. Mabeo products have been honoured with awards, such as ‘Best Craftsmanship’ and ‘Best Furniture’ at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York and have received coverage in well respected international publications such as Abitare, Interni, Elle Decor, Wallpaper, New York Times, Fast Company, Casa De Abitare and more. Mabeo has also realized significant international projects including design hotels – Hotel Nobis in Stockholm, Skeppsholmen hotel in Stockholm and Andaz Hotel in New York, corporate headquarters – Blue Air in Stockholm, DeBeers headquarters in Gaborone Botswana and various international galleries and private residences. Effort is made to not only embody Mabeo’s ideals in just words, but in the approach, the way of working and in the products made. This has resulted in a universal aesthetic language that communicates certain qualities: an essential simplicity of form, an idea of purity, the conscientious use and handling of natural materials, the dedication of the craftsmen and women, and the sensitivity of the collaborating designer with a reverence to the rich aesthetic heritage of Africa and its people.
profile garthTM ‘s collaboration with Mabeo began in 2009 upon an introduction by Patricia Urquiola to the owner Peter Mabeo In this collaboration the initial steps taken were not design product, but focused primarily on creative direction and ways to solidify the unique identity of this developing brand. With a systematic design approach garth created systems for presentation, ranging from printed material to exhibitions ,which naturally, were followed by distinctive, dynamic designs. These works where not only intended to align with the esthetic principles of the high-end furniture market, but also the cultural, social philosophies of the Mabeo brand.
garth™ garthTM is a Berlin based design studio focusing on product design, and creative direction. With a systematic design approach the studio creates and implements innovative design strategies and distinctive dynamic designs for cultural, social and business clients. The studio’s mentality is ideas led, project specific and grounded on analytic thinking. We believe design to be experimental, dynamic and useful. Therefore we approach each commission individually from a multi-disciplinary perspective, and emphasize the intrinsic characteristics of each project to create innovative, well-crafted design solutions and self initiated projects with a passion for detail, functionality and beauty.
garth garth™ is headed by garth roberts. He founded the studio in 2009 after a series of pop-up studios project with Universities in Milan, Berlin and New York. Previously he worked in the studios of Jeffrey Bernett and Patricia Urquiola. Since summer 2007 he has been based in Berlin, Germany but continues working relations between Milan, Berlin and New York. The studio works in different fields of product design and creative direction, developing solutions for a wide range of venues from high-end furniture to contemporary art. We consult and design identity & branding systems, brand analysis and development, home accessories, lighting, furniture, retail interiors, collaborative marketing strategies, product packaging, spacial installations, hospitality interiors and product exhibitions.
