EDITOR’S LETTER Krystal Thomas

Let your mind run free, be creative, be individual. This year marks 40 years of punk and it is only right that

we celebrate the attitude of punk within our ANTI themed

issue. Punk is not just a musical style but it is a way of life that is based on personal expression and freedom. “The

popularity of punk rock was, in effect, due to the fact that it made ugliness beautiful.” We are opening the doors to a world of creative disruption and opposition! This issue

of Juicebox is all about being against the normalities we have become accustom too, we will take you on a path

of unorthodox thinking and will focus on themes of ANTI

fur, ANTI hate, ANTI establishment and ANTI fast fashion. Step outside your comfort zone and immerse yourself in our ANTI issue.

GO FAUX OR GO HOME This season we’re talking anti-fur and anti-leather. It may be summer, but thanks to the unpredictability of English weather, wearing fur or leather in the sunshine is quite the norm these days. Brightly coloured faux furs and leathers are continuing to liven up the London scenes and now it’s even better to go faux. Let’s start with furs, shall we? Most of us are familiar with the unimaginable ways in which fur is harvested from animals across the world, with China being the world’s largest exporter of fur, the country offers absolutely no regulation for the farmers whatsoever. But now it’s apparent that faux furs are often made of non-biodegradable synthetic fibres, meaning it will end up sitting in a landfill releasing harmful toxins into the atmosphere in years to come. So that’s the debate; animal welfare vs environmental welfare. However, with more than 80% of fur coming from the grotesque fur farms, it’s pretty obvious which issue deserves a more immediate response. Faux fur is only an issue if you don’t buy responsibly. Fast fashion is harmful in many aspects, including in the disposal of faux furs, so don’t just buy faux for a season, buy it knowing you can wear it in years to come and it won’t just end up in some landfill somewhere. Brand’s such as Shrimps do some AMAZING faux furs which you’ll definitely want in your closet beyond this summer, so think of it as an investment…one fab coat vs many ‘trendy’ coats. Now onto leather. The leather is something that gets less attention than the fur debate because the farming of it isn’t necessarily as bad as fur farming (from a meat-eater’s point of view), as most leathers are farmed from animals already being slaughtered for food. However, this is obviously still unethical but more leads on to the meat vs vegan debate. In recent years, faux leather has had similar criticisms to faux leather in their use of synthetic, non-biodegradable materials. However, this season we’re being introduced to some fabulously ethical faux leathers. Researchers at Iowa State university have created a faux leather from byproduct of kombucha tea, which is 100% biodegradable. Also fresh on the scene is a new pineapple-based faux leather which is made from the leaves of the fruit (who knew the leaves had a real use!). 16

VEGANISM : NEW AGE

“Veganism is nothing less than the evidence of one’s commitment to the principle of non-violence”

Speaking on behalf of vegans, the philosophy embodies the highest of spiritual and ethical aspirations unapologetically standing up for – non-violence, harmlessness, reverence for life, and the cultivation of compassion toward the innocent. Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. (While there’s no data on vegan diets, one study found that vegetarian diets used 2.9 times less water and 2.5 times less energy in food production than a diet containing meat and poultry.) More and more people are recognising the prejudice and injustice visible in enslaving and slaughtering animals, in order to feed our collective appetite for flesh, eggs, milk, and other products sourced from industries of exploitation. It’s also becoming known that the consumption of animal products is crucial to human health, and that industrialised animal

agriculture. Veganism is an understanding of the responsibility of us as individuals – the recognition of our personal obligation to minimise the harm we cause by our existence, and to develop in ourselves the qualities necessary to become citizens of a better future; where no one is oppressed, where no one is treated as a means to an end.The philosophy behind vegan is a purely plant-based lifestyle. Living without any animal products and eating plant foods only. It is a way of life and not just a simple food choice. Say goodbye to leather shoes, bags and many a cosmetic item in your beauty cupboard. Becoming a vegan doesn’t mean you simply make some swaps in what you are eating - it’s a lifestyle choice with ethical and moral consideration, too. Now whilst this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, there are a number of ways we can incorporate healthy aspects of veganism into our diets.Think an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, snacks incorporating seeds, nuts, coconut, raw juices and when it comes to main meals ensuring we balance

our eating with the right ingredients to nourish. This includes plenty of plant-based amino acids for protein. As you look at your balanced vegan plate you’ll see it half filled with a bounty of beautiful vegetables, one quarter with whole-grains and the remaining quarter bursting with vegan protein sources such as chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans and tempeh. It is the combination of legumes and whole grains, which creates a complete protein source for our body to have optimum nutrition. Veganism is nothing less than the evidence of one’s commitment to the principle of nonviolence – the determination to eliminate our support for cruelty carried out on our behalf. The vegan ideal represents nothing less than the next evolutionary step for humankind. This quantum leap may seem far-fetched from the accessible meat diet, but it is within this very change that we will ultimately find our hope for the world of tomorrow. Just some food for thought. VEGAN : TOP LONDON RESTAURANTS With the vegan diet taking over and everyone waking up to the harmful meat industry, vegan cafes and restaurants are popping up all over London and we’re going to give you a low down on some of the top ones to visit.

TIBITS The first stop on the list was Tibits which I placed on my ‘must go to’ list earlier this year. Situated in a little hub of restaurants known as the ‘Food Quarter’ on Heddon Street off Regents Street. The restaurant’s ethos is very much about casual dining, ensuring that diners can relax in informal surroundings. Although a fast paced environment, customers are encouraged to take their time and are never hurried out. The ‘Food Boat’ is the focal point of the restaurant, located in the centre, hosting over 40 hot and cold dishes including desserts. There is also a soup of the day (which was Beetroot & Caraway Seed when I visited) and all meals come with a complementary bread roll. The dishes on the Food Boat during my visit were: Chilli Sin Carne, Gnocchetti alla Mediterrana, Indian Dhal, Aubergines, Power Green vegetables, as well as cold salads and their signature dried green bean salad (which was my absolute favourite). The beans were beautifully dressed with scattered walnuts and were promoted as a ‘concentration booster’. So much so, I am hoping to re-create the dish at home for myself! All round relaxing experience with gorgeous fresh food, definitely earning its place on my ‘must go to’ list. BLACK CAT With a cooperative vegan café in Hackney sounding rather inviting, I was eager to tick the Black Cat Café off my list for being unpretentious, tasty and fairly priced. You order from a daily-changing

22

chalkboard menu and sit at communal tables. Herbivores will enjoy the fry-ups at weekends and pies, salads and soups during the week. The 25 teas include a panoply of rooibos and blacks, and the cappuccino with Bonsoy ‘milk’ is a winner. Kale is a regular of course. It’s the kind of vegan food that’s heavy on animal substitutes: soy and similar takes on ‘cheese’, ‘sausage’ and ‘egg’. The café feels bright and calm, as you’d hope from a plant-loving cooperative. When full, it’s a buzzing (but not overwhelming) place to be, and when not it’s a chilled space from which to watch the world go by.

THE WAITING ROOM Before visiting The Waiting Room I heard many good things along the food chain about this cafe. I can honestly say I wasn’t disappointed The Waiting Room is a real hidden gem south of the river, serving up faultless (not to mention strong) coffee, sandwiches, hot dogs, bagels and, of course, burgers; and all at under £5. My personal favourite, The Fonz. I have yet to find a better vegan burger in London – juicy, firm and flavoursome tofu patty, plentiful garnish, vegan cheese and barbecue sauce, all of which are just about contained in a seeded bun. This is definitely not a demure, first date lunch. You will get sauce on your face, and you will enjoy it. This is a definite favourite and one to remember. MS CUPCAKE What first peaked my interest in Ms Cupcake, was their red velvet cookie sand-

wiches that I’d seen delicious looking photos of online. Ms Cupcake seem to cook up some pretty unique sweet treats, and knowing that their cakes and biscuits are vegan is pretty rad. I asked a server which cupcakes were popular with customers. He pointed to some Ferrero Rocher and Oreo cupcakes which looked super incising and hard to resist but it seemed I had arrived at Ms Cupcake just in time to snag the last red velvet cookie sandwich. My gut instinct was right, this was my favourite pick! I really liked the large, chewy cookie base and the buttery, sweet frosting. I should know now that whatever I buy from a vegan bakery it will get devoured in one day, just as these did.

MILDREDS I must admit I have never been to Mildred’s, which must be one of the most well known vegan restaurants in London. They now have a cookbook out and I’ve always heard good things about the place. Therefore was a go to, to visit they do vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free dishes, all clearly marked on the menu. Like many vegan restaurants, the food is international. This is usually a bad sign in a normal restaurant but a vegan diet has restricted ingredients, therefore you have to reach out to foreign cuisines for variety; with Sri Lankan sweet potato Curry, Risotto Cakes and the popular Polish Burger, a beetroot, white bean and dill patty topped with Vegan cheese. THE ART OF SELF LOVE THE IMPACT

OF SOCIAL

MEDIA & IT’S

EFFECT ON

WE FEEL WH

HOW

EN WE LOOK

IN THE MIRR

OR

W 32

ith social media and the digital universe consuming daily lives, self esteem and self regard are taking a back step. Everyone’s ideals and illusions of ideals are based on what we see in the media, we allude to an unrealistic value of perfection. Many live according to a socially acceptable template, within the realm of safety, while living repetitively and dreaming of ways to escape.

Instead of looking upon ourselves in negative light it’s time to engage in the real beauty of us as individuals. Some may view self love as a hippie fad trend or something only accessible for a handful of supermodels or spiritual junkies but self love is a birthright for everyone. Learning to love yourself is a journey that teaches you more about yourself and your values than any other journey in your life. We’re living in an era where the self-love revolution is gaining momentum, yet we have trouble doing the work; it goes against everything we were raised to believe. In order to truly love yourself, you need to be able to open up to yourself and allow honesty,

love peace and trust within your heart and mind. We often seem to look for these things in the wrong places and wrong people when all we need to do is reflect within ourselves. Take time to celebrate your emotions because they give you a great outlet for your feelings. As individuals we need to recognise that self-love is our fuel; it’s the foundation for who we are. Everything builds on top of this foundation, and if it isn’t solid, life feels shaky. For those of us who have experienced the power of self-love, we can agree that the effects can often feel quite magical. The moment we start loving ourselves, we experience shifts of positive energy. Life begins to move forward with

more ease and things begin to magically fall into place. Loving you first and creating that deep, internal relationship has countless magical benefits. Self-love is all about identifying your needs and making them a priority in your life. It’s about doing what truly feels right for you. You’ll celebrate the beauty and freedom of being true to you, and you’ll gain a solidified sense of who you truly are helping you ground into your true self. It is all about taking ownership; owning up to your actions, and how you choose to show up in this world. In order to love yourself more, the key is to be kinder to yourself. And always remember

that self-love is truly the most beautiful love you can have. In this new day, set a standard of loving yourself and realising that nobody can love or respect you the way you love yourself. We are imperfect beings meant to learn from our past, not bring these mistakes into the future. You live and learn from every obstacle that occurs in your life. You should never stop loving who you are and that is why a little more self-love in this new day is a great step forward into the future.

SEX

the forbidden word

S

ex has always been a taboo subject. No matter how much people had sex, and how naughty their sex lives were, people rarely discussed what went down in the bedroom. It is only within the last few decades, that people have loosened up and become more open to talking about the ins and outs of their sex lives. For years we believed that men have always had a higher sex drive, but living in a time of equality between men and women it is true that women are just as driven when it comes to wanting sex.

36

Whether we admit it or not, we all like to have sex, it’s just a natural feeling- we all know the benefits of a good sex life; the connection, the endorphins, the pleasure as well as a calorie burner. Luckily for us, our intimate nights of pleasure do have even more benefits past the bedroom and we have narrowed it down to the top 5.

ANTI DEPRESSION Having intimacy with another person has a positive effect on your mental health and keeps your mind active and healthy. No matter how calm, cool and collected you are as a person, everyone experiences a degree of stress throughout day to day life, it’s just the reality of living in today’s world. Engaging in any form of sexual pleasure can make blood pressure less reactive to stress and can lower stress levels. Explains why we’re always in a good mood after sex; we’ve just let go of a full day’s stress!

ANTI BAD MOOD As we know guys and girls, sex is a work out and you simply get out what you put in. The increased heart rate after a sex workout causes your brain to release feelgood chemicals that boost your levels of serotonin also known as the ‘happy hormone’. It is also scientifically proven that eating dark chocolate can increase your serotonin, so why not combine the both to get that extra feel-good feeling. Serotonin is the body’s key antidepressant chemical and one of the main reasons why we can’t stop smiling and feeling happy and relaxed after sex session. ANTI CANCER

“regular sex can protect men from the risk of prostate cancer” Researchers at Nottingham University have found that men who

have an active sex life in their 50’s can significantly reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Cancerous changes in the body may be found at any time, however sex clears the prostate of any toxins which could potentially linger and feed any cancerous cells. The link between sex and prostate cancer was found after several studies revealed that monks appeared to have a higher chance of developing prostate cancer.

ANTI ACHES & PAINS We’ve all been in the situation where our partner is up for a cheeky night of naughtiness but you’ve been lumbered with a headache and end up having to say no to sex. After today, things may change, the usual “Not feeling it tonight honey, got a pounding headache” may change to “I’ve got a headache honey, sex?,” or so says Dr. Ebanks, who believes there’s a real correlation between sex and pain management. “Through sexual arousal and orgasm the hormone oxytocin

is secreted in your body, which in turn causes the release of endorphins,” he explains. “Because of these natural opiates, sex acts as a powerful analgesic.” So that’s right guys and dolls, sex is also a pain buster.

ANTI AGE The dreaded ‘age’ subject haunts us all. No one wants to age, but no matter how hard we try to avoid it by trying the newest anti-age cream or getting countless botox sessions, age is a natural process - it’s inevitable. A scottish study showed that strong loving relationships who have intercourse three or more times a week appeared on average 10 years younger than their actual age. The release of the sex hormone estrogen in both men and women happens during an orgasm and it is the chemical Estrogen that improves hair and skin quality, making people look more attractive. Looks like an orgasm a day keeps the age demon away. Written by Krystal Thomas

ANDREE CICCARELLI

Clear out your knicker drawer, bin those basic bras... There’s new lingerie in town and it just so happens to be ethically driven. Whether you’re an A List celebrity or a 9-5 city chick, it’s fair to say we all like to treat ourselves to an intimate lingerie set; it just gives us that feel good feeling! The girls at Juicebox have found the ultimate lingerie dream and it comes all the way from NYC. Andree Ciccarelli is a brand of sensual, handmade, made-to-order intimates locally sourced and produced in New York. We had a chat with Andree the designer and asked her few questions about her amazing brand.

AL C I H T E E H T RAND B E I R E G N LI OM FRESH FR NEW YORK

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND I was born in Manhattan and grew up in Central Connecticut. At seventeen, I moved back to Manhattan to attend Parsons the New School for Design to study communication and fashion design. During school I realized my passion was in couture techniques, tailoring, bridal and lingerie design. I did a few internships and design jobs within those fields throughout school. After graduating college in 2014, I stayed in Manhattan and began freelancing for a few lingerie and activewear brands. And that summer was when Andrée Ciccarelli started! HOW DID THIS BEAUTIFUL BRAND BEGIN? I started the brand because I felt creatively stumped. I was working for other brands with aesthetics so far from mine so I began creating in the evenings when I got home from work. I started posting the pictures on my instagram and got amazing feedback. I decided then to start a custom, made to order, small scale line. WHY DID YOU CHOSE TO BE ETHICAL? Ethical fashion is definitely an important thing for me. There is so much waste in this industry and

38

making sure you that in any small way helps!

ates the customizable option and the focus on fit.

WERE THERE ANY ISSUES STARTING THE BRAND? There are always issues, where to get funding, how to market, how to learn and run a business at the same time. (I made a lot of phone calls to my dad for business advice...like a lot!) It was tricky but definitely a wonderful learning experience and I’m still learning and growing everyday.

WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER BRANDS? Everything is made to order and can be custome sized to your body type. When you order through our site, put in your specific measurements and we alter the pattern to fit those specific measurements. It’s basically tailored lingerie, which is not something everyone can do.

HOW IS THE LINGERIE MADE? Everything is made by hand, from the patterns to the embroideries in the fabric, to the actual piece. Lots of time and steps go into creating a bra, garter, panty and robe. We have a specific set of sets to get the products created the best way.

WHAT DO YOU SEE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE BRAND? I’d eventually like to branch out and separate into two lines, with one produced in bigger quantities in a less expensive price range, and the other part more of a higher end line with the customizable part of the brand still key.

WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR FABRIC & MATERIALS? I source all of our fabric here in the garment district in Manhattan! But most of the fabrics are produced in France and Italy. WHO IS THE ANDREE CICCARELLI CUSTOMER? I think she is a younger woman, who love the femininity of lingerie but likes pieces with a little more edginess and depth. And she’s definitely someone who appreci

DESCRIBE THE BRAND IN ONE WORD Sensual. WHEN CAN YOU MAKE YOUR WAY TO LONDON? I would love to bring the brand to London! There are so many couture atelier’s and I would love to work amongst them. However, for now, we do ship internationally so anyone can definitely buy the line in London

AN INTERVIEW WITH THE DESIGNER

WHERE DO YOU STUDY AND WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO GO THERE? I’ve just finished my foundation year at Central Saint Martins where I started off down the diagnostic pathway and then specialized into fashion design. For me CSM is the hub of fashion studies with the most amazing atmosphere and creative bustle. An aspect I have enjoyed most throughout this year is the naturally fast pace turnover of work, which I feel reflects the industry very closely. The process of improvement is truly down to practice and continuous flow which is not only exciting but addictive as thousands of ideas are bouncing off the studio walls.

48

WHAT WAS THE INPIRATION BEHIND THIS PROJECT? This project named ‘Unknown radiation’, is based primarily on the nuclear disasters Fukushima and Chernobyl. After watching several documentaries I became very interested in the unfamiliar effect the radiation had on living organisms and how the empty cities were left with only shells of buildings. Further research lead me into exploring mutation and textural aspects of the restricted perimeters. A lot of this research is slightly disturbing and grotesque which fits well into Alexander Mcqueen’s style as I was chosen and one of the 10 finalists for this industry project. Through the mutations I wanted to expose new parts of the body which are normally covered from public view. This also lead into looking at natural scaring that some

people beautify with tattoos and traditional scaring methods which are seen as status and beauty in other cultures. I translated these textures into my own textile of burning material and heavy embellishment. The nude colour scheme fits well to my research into these skin textures. WHAT ARE YOU INCORPORATING TO MAKE THIS COLLECTION NEW? Through my background research I really wanted to present a new outlook onto features of the body which are stereotypically perceived as ugly. I feel through the use of thin netting material and embellishment I have exposed the skin to a certain extent as well as subtly integrating these skin textures onto the silhouette. It’s all about perspective as from my final collection one would not be able to recognize the grotesque starting point, but see it completely different as something of beauty and desirability. Therefore I feel this collection brings a change of viewpoint as well as bringing context into the designs and an exploration of new textures. WHERE DID YOU SOURCE YOUR MATERIALS AND DID YOU HAVE ANY TROUBLES? Material sourcing was fairly straight forward consisting of several trips to different fabric shops around London. I decided on my nude colour palette fairly early on, therefore I collected a lot samples which I then did material testing on such as burning, painting, embellish-

ment and the use of latex. From those results I then chose scuba material as a main material for the skirt as it was fairly durable, as well as thinner more delicate materials for the cloak… HOW HAS THIS PROJECT INFLUENCED PLANS FOR FUTURE COLLECTIONS? Even though this project has come to an end, I still have many more ideas I intend to explore over my summer break. My pieces are so far very fitted to the female body, however I have several ideas of how to design correlating pieces for men. The embellishment is a key technique in this collection which I’d also like to develop with the introduction of vivid colours to contrast the neutral and subtle tones. HOW DOES YOUR COLLECTION CHALLENGE FAST FASHION? The attention to detail is something I always dedicate a lot of time to, I feel my collection has the ability to intrigue the viewer from afar with a minimalistic and clean cut silhouette, but then at closer view the embellishment and material manipulation adds further depth to my designs. This is something that is often put aside by large commercial companies, but for me it’s not just about the overall look, a successful design is due to close attention to all areas. CHARCOAL SKINCARE

“Turns out microbeads are harming the environment. It’s time to turn to charcoal”

So, charcoal; probably one of the last things we’d ever expect to be putting on our skin or in our mouths (not purposely anyway). Last time I checked, charcoal was that thing we used in art class which make an awful mess and got stuck under your fingernails. But with the upcoming banning of microbeads is the US, we’re being forced to change our exfoliation routine for the better. It turns out Microbeads are bad for the environment as well as our health. These plastic beads are non-biogradable; they poison our waters and are toxic to marine animals who consume them. It’s inevitable that microbeads will be banned over here too, so charcoal is one of the many alternative, natural exfoliants

56

JUICE Now, looking at someone holding a bottle filled with black liquid is likely to send your eyebrows shooting into your hairline, but you know this person must be trendy af. Activated charcoal powder is beneficial for many things, such as anti-age-

ing, detoxing, stomach bloating, heartburn and even poisoning! (though we advise not swallowing life-threatening toxins works significantly better for that one). This is because activated charcoal powder can absorb thousands of times its own weight in gases, heavy metals, poisons, and other chemicals, rendering them harmless. TOOTHBRUSH Toothbrushes made with Binchotan charcoal blended into their bristles help give off negative ions, deodorise and remove plaque, prevent bad breath and remove bacterial from growing within the brush. It’s also a natural whitener so put a dab of activated charcoal powder on your toothbrush and see instant results. FACE MASK Charcoal is fab for drawing out the impurities from your pores. The activated powder is perfect for dull and tired skin and it detoxifies, brightens and invigorates all skin types, leaving it looking brighter and full of life. For those with blocked pores living in a pollution filled area, it’s a Godsend.

It’s known that the number of men that actively care about their appearance increases every year, with more and more men being open about and proud of their grooming routines. Well the industry has noticed and are dishing out the best of the best to accommodate for these image conscious men. As far as trends go, it’s time to put that blade to the beard and let your beautiful chin see the light after all those months in hiding. We took a peek into a local barbershop before hours to delve deeper

into this emerging trend, and it’s all about the Cut Throat. For all those looking to shave, the cut-throat razor offers a finer, smoother finish, deeming the clippers inferior. One brand we love this season: The Bluebeard’s Revenge. These grooming products are the solution for all your beard related problems, transforming you from ‘untamed beast to manly masterpiece’ in a matter of moments. Not only do these products offer the best quality finish, but they’re cruelty free and completely against animal testing. Alas, these products are strictly for the manliest of men, which means NO GIRLS ALLOWED. The Bluebeards Revenge has received multiple grooming awards over the years from the likes of Men’s Health, FHM and the Barber Awards, so get to your nearest stockist (there’s dozens around London) or shop online to get a stubble free face for this summer.

INTRODUCING : CORTES An interview with Sam Davies, bass guitarist of Cortes

“London based rock trio playing Radio 1’s Big Weekend following first single release”

WHO ARE CORTES? We are a rock trio based in London. We take our influences from bands such as Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones mixed with modern influences. Andy is the singer/guitarist and is from London, Marijus thumps the Drums and is from Lithuania and I play the bass/backing vocals and I’m from Barnstaple, Devon.

64

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START A BAND? We were all working as freelance musicians before starting the band but upon meeting we realised that we all had a deep desire to write and tour original music. I first met Andy when I was studying at The Academy of Contemporary Music and he asked me if I’d be up for playing some songs he had written. As we started to play and gig together we decided to start a band properly and write all the music together. We then met Marijus doing a session for a pop artist and after

hearing the way he hit the drums we realised he simply HAD to be in the band.

HOW DID YOU FIND MOVING TO LONDON? Moving to London always seemed really scary and daunting to me. I’m from a small town in the West Country so London looked to me as a big scary city that I knew nothing about. I always say to people that are thinking about moving to London to just dive in head first! There is no better way to experience a city than to dive in the deep end and find your feet on your own. It’s how I did it and I don’t regret a minute. WHEN DID YOU GET IN TO MUSIC? I got into music from a young age and picked up the bass when I was 13/14. My older brother was learning guitar and I instinctively started playing it with my fingers. I believe my uncle told me “that’s how a bass

player plays!” To which I thought.. “what’s a bass??”. I then joined a band with some school mates and got a lot of experience playing in all sorts of random places including SXSW festival in Texas.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR CORTES? We have just released our first single Close To Nowhere and I’m completely blown away that Radio1 have put it on their BBC Introducing playlist and asked us to play at Radio1 Big Weekend! It’s already done so much better than we ever expected and now I’m just really excited to put out the whole EP. It’s 5 tracks and it will be out soon! As well as Big Weekend we are playing at Great Escape festival in Brighton, GoldCoast OceanFest in Devon, Boardmasters in Cornwall and El Dorado festival in Ledbury.
