Target Market Ensuring your marketing meets the right demographic. Typically, the people who view our products are higher-than-average earners who successfully combine jobs with family life. They live in larger detached or semi-detached properties either on the edge of towns or in semi-rural locations. Many are employed in managerial and professional occupations and have at least two cars per household. They are frequent users of the internet for a wide variety of purposes, including for shopping and keeping up with news, and their weekends are for leisure, when they can relax and enjoy spending disposable income. Typical leisure activities might include golf, gardening, walking, dining out, antiques and theatre. While they buy goods online, they also like to support local independent retailers that offer unique, quirky and eclectic items. They are technologically literate and comfortable with modern media such as tablets, smart phones, DAB radio and online streaming services.

Testimonials We have been regular advertisers in The Post since the early 1990s and have always enjoyed excellent response. We have made the most of The Post’s free design studio to ensure our adverts stay modern and current, and now The Post is helping us to expand our coverage digitally via website and social media. Martin Haigh, Partner at Haigh & Sons I would like to thank the Local World team for all their help with our advertising. Not only have they been great with the normal paper advertising, but have helped with getting us started using Google plus, Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter. They also looked into helping with our website and other forms of marketing. They have gone above and beyond to help us. Helen Stuckes, Branch Manager at Touchstone Residential The West Country Life readership is the perfect audience for my business. It is the norm to receive a phone call enquiry from one of my adverts rather than the exception. I expect to receive enquiries because of how my adverts are published and I am not normally disappointed. Mark Warren, Jenner Property Services

Commercial property agency is a results business. We have to ensure that we target our marketing carefully as our clients expect us to deliver results when we are spending their money. We have worked with The Post and Western Daily Press over many years both in printed format and increasingly online and we have always been pleased with the results. That is why we are frequent subscribers. Andrew Hardwick, WGH Property

We have been regular advertisers in the Western Daily Press since we opened in 2010 and have found it to be an exceptionally useful marketing tool. On a user level, we find the whole process extremely simple, with regular contact from Sean and his team and, most importantly, we find the reach and impact of any adverts we place actually produce results. Overall, we feel we get excellent value from our adverts and look forward to working together in partnership for many years to come. Ollie Hollis, Hollis Morgan We have been working with Local World for a few months now and the first thing that struck me was their passion to help grow our estate agency business in Longwell Green. We have seen more and more activity on our Facebook and Twitter pages and it is very exciting to watch a fairly new side of the business grow. Our representative obviously knows the business well and meetings have been set up in order to ascertain what we want to achieve as a company and how we are going to get there. We look forward to growing our business even more with their efficiency and helpfulness. In summary, they are totally professional and very helpful; a pleasure to have on our side. Barry McKechnie, Besley Hill, Longwell Green

We advertise frequently in The Post and West Country Life and receive a great response both in print and on the website. My rep Allison is extremely professional and will always do the very best she can to ensure I receive the response needed. We did stop using print titles, but immediately noticed the impact on our website. Local newspaper advertising is essential to our business and I will always recommend it to other agents and auctioneers. Katrina Plaister, David Plaister

2015

We’re national champions! G

IRLS from Hanham Abbots Junior School were crowned national football champions – beating 1,500 other teams at a competition to get the trophy. The Hanham Abbots Under 11 Girls Team got a place in the final of the English Schools Football Association Under 11 Danone Nations cup final at the Lilleshall Sports Centre after an impressive run. After winning the South Gloucester, Gloucester and South West tournament and remaining unbeaten – without conceding a goal – they got to the final with what appeared to be ease. Proud headteacher Mike Weenick said: “The final was a very close game but after a number of outstanding saves from star keeper Leila Russell, Lydia Hall played an amazing through ball for our striker Edie Hopton, aged 9, who ran through on goal and calmly slotted in from close range – after what felt like an age, the final whistle blew and we had won.”

Joe, you are one of the UK’s most popular entertainers. But you n’tt always on the stage, having weren n’ worked at Smithfields Meat Market and as a welder. Did you always want to be a comedian? ■ No, not really, it just sort of happened. I always wanted to be a geologist, but n’tt have the qualifications, which is didn n’ why I’m now studying with the OU (Open University).

YATTON

You were crowned King of the Jungle in the TV series I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here. You were also the first celebrity to earn full stars at a Bushtucker trial. What was the worst thing you ate in the jungle? ■ I had no eating trials while I was in the jungle, all of mine were physical trials, but the worst thing I ate, which was part of one of our meals that somebody had won, was a crocodile’s foot. It tasted like chicken.

Obviously, if I’m doing voice-over work it’s accentuated a bit, but it is what it is.

You sing a song called ‘I Know A Song That Will Get On Your Nerves’. What song gets on your nerves and why? ■ Anything sad, I like uplifting songs and music.

You used to hate flying. But in I’m a Celebrity you had to do a task from an airborne helicopter. How was that? ■ At the time, it was pretty scary hanging from a helicopter, but as I’d done a parachute jump the week before I felt it was easier than that, at least I had safety wire while I was on the helicopter. But as a result of that show, it cured my fear of flying and now I have a private pilot’s licence. I am guessing, like other comedians, you get heckled. What’s your worst heckling experience? ■ To be honest I rarely get heckled, I think worst thing that happened was that somebody actually died while I was on stage singing: “I know a song that’ll get on your nerves.” Obviously, I had to cut the show short. What comedians inspire you? ■ Bob Monkhouse, Tommy Cooper and Norman Wisdom. Sadly none of them is with us now. And finally, what do you remember best. Festival finale The oldest burlesque dancer in the world An 84-year-old who prefers fishnets to support stockings is set to perform in Bristol. Sophie Prideaux reports

B

RISTOL Burlesque Festival is set to return bigger, bolder and more glamorous than ever – and this year’s star attraction? An 84-year-old striptease. World-renowned Lynn Ruth Miller, a comedian and burlesque star who has appeared on Britain’s Got Talent, will take to the stage at Rip Roar Comedy Club for the final night of a four-day spectacular in which the city’s thriving burlesque scene will be propelled into the spotlight. Now in its third year, Bristol Burlesque Festival continues to attract world class acts, and is about far more than just the dancing, organiser Tuesday Laveau said. “The scene in Bristol is absolutely thriving,” dancer Miss Laveau said. “Burlesque has gone in and out of fashion over the years, but typically becomes very popular in the years following a recession. “The scene in Bristol is just getting bigger and bigger, I dance all over the world and people know about Bristol Burlesque.”

As well as promoting the art of burlesque in Bristol and the South West, the festival prides itself on putting on an amazing show by incorporating comedy, drag and cabaret. “Comedy and burlesque go hand in hand,” Miss Laveau said. “And that’s why we are so excited to be holding the final event at Rip Roar, which puts on amazing comedy nights in the city. It’s a great venue with an amazing stage. “I would say to anyone who has never been to a burlesque show before to come along. If you don’t know quite what to expect, all I can say is you are in for an amazing night out – just be sure to come with an open mind.” But one of the main things Bristol Burlesque Festival hopes to achieve is to promote positive body image to its largely female audience. Co-producer of the festival and drag act Miss Dis said: “We try to represent women of all sizes, and that’s something we are really keen on. We want everyone in the audience to see someone on that stage they can relate to.

“Lynn Ruth Miller is just incredible. She’s 84, 4ft-nothing tall and is just an absolute hoot. “She puts on such a good show and we are so thrilled to have her appearing at the festival.” Other acts to grace one of the three stages at this year’s festival include Rubyyy Jones, Lydia L’Scabies, Dave the Bear and San Francisco’s Fauxnique – a female drag artist who, Miss Laveau says, “pushes boundaries” in the industry. “People work hard for their money, we know that,” said Miss

Dis. “So what we are promising is an amazing night out without breaking the bank.” Thursday night’s show Darkly Dreaming Divas takes place on September 3 at the Queenshilling, the second show – Exclusivity – takes place on Friday, September 4, at Smoke and Mirrors bar, and the grand finale, Garden of Earthly Delights, is on Saturday, September 5, at Rip Roar Comedy Club. Ticket prices range from £8 to £12.50. For more information or to buy tickets, visit bristolburlesquefestival.co.uk

Burlesque has gone in and out of fashion over the years, but typically becomes very popular in the years following a recession Miss Laveau

What is burlesque? ■ Burlesque is a French word derived from the Italian “burlesco” and the Spanish word “burla” which means to “joke”. The art of burlesque dates back to Ancient Greece, and arrived in the UK in the 18th century, when it largely attracted the middle classes. Victorian burlesque became popular in West End theatres in

the 19th century. Shows were often parodies of musicals adapted with a risqué style, often mocking theatrical and musical conventions. Burlesque became popular in America after a few shows travelled over from London into Broadway theatres. While burlesque went out of fashion in England at the end of the 19th

century, the American style of burlesque flourished, and developed an increasing focus on female nudity. Exotic “cooch” dances were brought in and shows were hosted in clubs, music halls and theatres. In recent years, it has become popular again, with a focus on the glamorous burlesque seen in the US.
