WORDS FROM gasoline Well, the cool wind has started to blow, and we can see the handwriting on the wall as far as riding season is concerned. Probably a month or so left. Hopefully everyone got in plenty of miles this last summer, made some new friends, and took away some great stories from the road. Here at Gasoline, we did all those things, and are gonna keep squeezing more in until the very last minute. Maybe we need to rig up some snow chains for our tires this year? The big hurrah was last month. Sturgis. We made it, our project bike made it, and we made it back. Our livers and wallets were a little worse for the wear. We checked out all our old favorites, found a couple new favorites, and saw everything in between. We’d like to thank the Broken Spoke Campground for taking care of us once again this year. One couldn’t ask for a better place to stay. The project bike we’ve been working on throughout the summer is by no means done, but we got it thrown together enough to make the trip to Sturgis. Nothing’s gone wrong with it so far and hopefully that trend continues the rest of the year. This winter we plan on tearing it down and redoing it more to our liking. So, this being the last issue, that means another year in the books. What’s next? Well, we’ll be seeing more of you next year, and you’ll be seeing more of us. Many many more pages of us actually, as in about 100! Just think of all the good stuff we’ll be able to cram in that many pages. It will be glorious! Until then, you’ll have to hibernate through winter. Stock up on food and beer and watch some football. Dream of two wheels glistening in the sun, and before you know it, it’ll be spring. From the crew here at Gasoline, take it easy, and we’ll catch ya on the flip side!

Long Way Round: Chasing Shadows Across the World Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman This book describes the journey of two actors, Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge and Star Wars) and Charley Boorman (Deliverance and The Serpent’s Kiss), as they travel around the world on their BMW GS’s. The two actors traveled with a support crew and a camera crew, but did all of the navigating and most of the negotiating with the locals themselves. As you are reading this book you will feel as if you were on this adventure with the two actors. Ewan and Charley travel through Europe, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia, Alaska, Canada and end it New York. They encounter harassing boarder guards, Russian Mafia members, crazy fans, and friendly strangers along their journey. The book contains journal entries, photographs, mileage charts, and travel maps of their adventure around the world. If reading isn’t your thing, their whole adventure was recorded and is available on DVD. Ewan and Charley enjoyed this adventure so much that they decided to take a second adventure No. 6
which they wrote about in Long Way Down which chronicles their journey through Australia.
Rat fink DVD Winter is approaching and soon you’ll be sitting on your sofa eating potato chips and drinking a cold beer with nothing on TV. Check out “The Tales of the Rat Fink” The movie goes back into the 50s where Mr. Ed “Big Daddy” Roth(creator of Rat Fink) started creating unique rides and a culture that is still going strong today. The video is a bit wacky, just like Big Daddy Roth. You learn about the history of hot rod culture and why all of us are a part of it now. “The Tales of the Rat Fink” is about 90 mins and there’s never a dull moment. Universal trailer light I found myself in a bind about a week ago when the license plate/tail light bracket on my bike decided it’d had enough of the vibration and made a departure bouncing down the highway unbeknownst to me. A visit to the DMV scored me a new plate, but I was still left without any sort of light. A quick trip to the local Fleet Farm solved my problem. They sell this universal tail/brake light along with a universal mounting bracket. It’s not gonna win any bike shows but for $10 it’s perfectly functional and got me back on the road the same day. Gotta make do with what you’ve got sometimes.
Biltwell Whiskey Throttle If you’re looking to clean up your bars a little bit this Biltwell throttle housing might be part of the answer you’re looking for. Biltwell has a reputation for making quality stuff at a fair price. We picked one of these up for our project bike and can’t complain at all. The throttle housing comes with an inner grip to allow you to slip rubber or whatever kinda grips on you’d like. We took the easy route and used some hockey stick tape. It was a great time as we did some riding through the Black Hills and drank a few beers here and there. We didn’t take as many photos as we usually do, just because we were trying to enjoy life a little more and work a little less. Sometimes you need to do that to keep yourself sane. Some low points of the trip included losing our show tent ($200), Ray Bans ($100), and $40 cash (gambling at the Silverado Franklin in Deadwood.) Despite our losses, all in all it was a great time and we are excited to count the days down for next year. Check out some photos we took, there are pretty ladies, some biker celebrities, and regular motorcycle riders like you and I.

MELVIN’S HOW-TO We’re wrapping up the season with some simple painting and pinstriping. Well, pinstriping maybe isn’t so simple, unless you’ve got lots of practice under your belt that is. For this month’s how-to I started out by purchasing a sweet open face helmet from a swap meet. Okay... not a swap meet, but the world-wide-web. So now I have this new helmet but hate the color of it and I look like a nerd riding around in it. I still want to keep my head safe at all times so I’m going to show you how to turn your helmet from uncool to way cool and “ol’ skool.” For this job I found a friend, Jon Larson from Larsons Creative Concepts to help me with some pinstriping. Step 1: Alright, first we need to clean the helmet and take off any materials(decals, emblems, etc.) you can. If you can’t take anything off, it’s time for the next step. Step 2: Grab some masking tape and start taping off anything you don’t want to get paint on.
Step 7: When the paint has dryed for over 24 hours, it’s time for the next step. I tried to do my own artwork, but when you don’t have the right tools, you can’t do the right job. So we reached out to our friend Jon Larson from Larsons Creative Concepts and gave him full reign over the artwork. I gave him a few ideas and let him get to work.
Step 3: Once the helmet is all taped off, you are ready to scuff. Purchase a red scuff pad at your local home improvement store. If the helmet is already pretty smooth and you just need to have paint stick, scuffing should be good enough. In other cases, more sanding may be required.
Step 8: Of course before you know it, it was a day before we left for Sturgis and Jon was waiting ‘til the last minute. No worries, Jon drew out the pinstripe and the artwork and transferred the artwork to the helmet. Once Jon placed the artwork on the helmet he got out his trusty pinstripe brush and started laying paint.
Step 4: Once you are done scuffing the helmet, grab a tack rag and clean off all the dust from scuffing.
Step 9: Once all the paint was laid out, Jon had to add a little something. He told me to leave and then come back in 10 minutes. The little bit of accenting color he added made the helmet complete.
Step 5: Now this is an average joe paint job, so grab some rattle cans and get to work. You will want to purchase some primer and then a color of your choosing. Spray the helmet with primer and let it dry. Step 6: Next grab your cool color. Mine is flat black because it’s the most badass color you can make anything. Spray as many coats as you like. We stopped after 4 coats.

Step 10: Let the paint dry and put the helmet back together. Before you pull the tape up, you might need to cut around the tape where any paint has built up. Once you have it all together, throw the helmet on and hit the streets looking badass!

So now Amos had another dream, (what’s new?). This time it was about a motorcycle. He had been fanaticizing about the concept for years, and his friend Nick Senne (Photographer as well) was looking for a bike for himself. Nick came across a prime Suzuki SV1000. He shot Amos the link, and …800 miles and 2 days later, it was game on!

Amos had it in his head that he wanted a reliable, fuel injected, torque crazy, modern café racer. What he was shooting for was a little beyond his skill level, so he gave Nick a call and asked if he would take the lead and make this build a reality. Now came the challenge of converting an SV1000 into a café racer. The entire rear sub frame was fabricated to accommodate the new café tail. Next, the front fairing came off for the 7” LED halo headlight to take its place. Amos and Nick also ditched the stock gauge cluster for something a little more modern; a smart phone using a GPS speedo. The exhaust was chopped and wrapped using a 2-into-1 M4 header to expose that gnar gnar v-twin growl. They finished it off with a single LED taillight and a crazy, yet classy paint scheme tied together with subtle Amos 5-oh star striping. “In all, it was a fun build for a fun guy,” said Nick. For us here at Gasoline Magazine this is what it’s all about. Having an idea and making it a reality. Taking a stock bike and turning it into something cool and yours. Rolling it out of your garage and onto the streets when you’re done makes it all worth while.

It’s fall and you know what that means! Football and new seasons of TV shows. I never really got into football, until I started having a beer while watching it. So before my new found love of football, I’d gotten hooked on some other shows. Two of those shows are back this season with new episodes. One was awesome from the beginning and the other one was cool, then lame, and now it might be back on the right track. If you’ve not seen this first show, might I suggest you check out the first 3 seasons on DVD. To see this fall’s new 4th season, you’ll need cable or satellite. Sons of Anarchy on FX is a show about the so called “biker club lifestyle”, some of which could be true and some which could be false. You’ll be hooked after the first few minutes of the show even if you’re not in a biker club. I’ve heard some clubs hate the show, and some love it. The Hells Angels Sonny Barger was a guest last season so he must approve of it at least somewhat. The new season started September 6 and we were not disappointed with the 90 minute premier. It got us hooked enough to make sure the DVR is set so we don’t miss an episode. Next, we probably all know about this show and are sucked in by the drama - American Chopper on Discovery, or is it TLC? No, back on Discovery, I think? Anyways, father and son have broken apart, are suing each other, and are making motorcycles for companies that have nothing to do with motorcycles anymore. When the network stopped the show 2 years ago I was filled with joy and thought it was about time. Then they bring it back as JR vs. SR. or vise versa. Admittedly it was entertaining to
see the lawsuit drama unfold and watch crappy bikes being built again. But wait a minute here, they’re not building ugly choppers anymore, at least one of them isn’t. Paul Jr. Designs is starting to create unique custom bikes and not all the same chopped out, ugly, long bastards that ol’ Senior likes to build (or observe his employees building.) Just last night I watched the show and Jr. was building a bike for “Gears of War 3” WOW!!! He has the talent and that build is looking good. I think what Jr. has that OCC does not is talent. OCC (Sr.) draws all the bikes on the computer and there isn’t any real creativity going on, whereas Jr. starts with a frame and builds what he sees in his head. I feel Jr. is getting more respect from us bikers out there because he is still doing it the way we should be doing it. Basically, I am going to continue watching the show because of Vinnie and Jr., and of course, Mikey! So maybe Discovery has a show worth watching for one more season. What would be nice would be to see OCC go under and then let Jr. reign over them. Maybe Sr. will ask to work at Paul Jr. Designs. You have all fall to watch these shows, so save them on the DVR and get ready to relax in your warm house. But for now, it’s back to work on my end, we have to start the 2012 stories for you lazy bums!

SUPERCHARGE THIS! By Nate Rogers, Scooter Shak

Ah yes, the last issue of the year and another summer come and gone right quick. Sturgis is over, the weather is getting cooler and that means one thing. Park the bike and forget about it until next March. Yeah, not such a great idea, especially if you have an older model bike and you think it might need a little TLC. With my personal stuff I do all repairs in October and November when everything settles down for a bit. No spring time rat race to hurry up and fix something when it could have been done while you were staring at the three foot snow bank all winter. So right now is the time for a big inch motors, 30” wheels, and superchargers, which by the way I am doing one right now for a customer here at the Scooter Shak and I am glad he brought this in now, as it’s labor intensive and takes time, lots of time. Hmmm, ya superchargers, this particular one is a B-1 Procharger that is in the process of being installed on a 113 inch twin cam that already makes about 120 HP. This supercharger setup is proven to make up to 75% power gains. Hence the reason we ordered injectors for the motor that will handle 200 HP. Will this one make 200? No, the reason being is because we’re only putting four pounds of boost through it. This motor has a fairly high compression ratio already and we need to keep this reliable. But there will not be a problem with this bike making 185 HP. Pretty damn cool if you’re the kind of rider that likes to lead the pack and not look back. The things I like about this unit is that the supercharger uses its own oil supply and features a very large intercooler, so when air passes through the unit the air that goes into the intake is about 25 degrees cooler then the ambient air temperature outside. Ya, it’s not cheap making HP, all this for about $5,300 bucks not installed or tuned. Install times are about 6-12 hours depending on your application. But it’s a proven system and it works better then any other power adder system out there. Well that is it for 2011! The boss man has me working on hundreds of stories this winter so in 2012 you will have a lot more to read from me. Make sure to call us here at the Scooter Shak to get your bike ready for next year. Wally bought his first bike when he was 18 years old. He always vowed to own a Harley-Davidson before he was 50. Like Wally said, the bike pictured is his first Harley, which he got on his 50th birthday. Great to hear a story like this, keep riding Wally!!
