Beste lezers, Het einde van het jaar is voor ons altijd weer een feest in meerdere opzichten. De nieuwe ontwerpen op zowel horloge- als juwelengebied worden gepresenteerd op de vele evenementen die in deze gezellige winterdagen plaatsvinden. En de Masters of LXRY zal weer het absolute hoogtepunt zijn!

Heerlijk, de seizoenen zoals wij die in Nederland kennen.

Tegelijkertijd kijken wij ook reikhalzend uit naar volgend jaar, wat een zeer bijzonder jaar zal zijn voor GASSAN. Wij vieren in 2020 ons 75-jarig bestaan en met de voorbereidingen zijn wij nu al volop bezig.

Zoals u van ons mag verwachten, zal dat gepaard gaan met speciale edities, al dan niet in samenwerking met verschillende wereldberoemde horloge- en juwelenmerken.

Nog altijd zijn de klassieke horlogemerken favoriet bij de liefhebbers en ook komend jaar hebben wij meerdere momenten gepland om deze aan u te tonen. Er wordt ons veelvuldig gevraagd wat de nieuwste trends zijn op horlogegebied, maar een echt nieuwe trend is er niet te benoemen.

Wat wel erg opvalt is dat de merken hun ‘heritage’ omarmen. Zij doen inspiratie op uit hun rijke verleden om op basis van deze historische modellen nieuwe lijnen uit te brengen.

Een must read in deze editie van het GASSAN Magazine is voor mij het interview met een icoon van de Nederlandse vastgoedwereld; Lesley Bamberger van de Kroonenberg Groep. Een man met een duidelijke visie, ongelooflijke passie voor zijn vak, een prachtige ondernemer en bovenal een familieman.

Ook leest u in deze editie interviews met sportmannen Robert Doornbos en Quincy Promes. Voormalig Formule 1-coureur Robert Doornbos spraken wij over zijn carrière en natuurlijk over de terugkeer van de Grand Prix van Nederland. Watch enthusiasts still favour classic watch brands, and we are also planning several events to honour those classic brands. We are often asked what the newest trends are in the field of watches, but there are no real new trends. But what is striking is that brands nowadays embrace their ‘heritage’. They are inspired by their rich past and release new lines based on these historical models.

A must read in this edition of the GASSAN Magazine is the interview with an icon in the Dutch real estate world; Lesley Bamberger from the Kroonenberg Groep. A man with a clear vision, incredible passion for his profession, a wonderful entrepreneur and above all a family man.

In this edition you can also read interviews with sportsmen Robert Doornbos and Quincy Promes. With former Formula 1 driver Robert Doornbos we talked about his career and of course about the return of the Dutch Grand Prix. Quincy Promes TERUG BIJ AJAX, THUIS IN AMSTERDAM

Voetballer Quincy Promes kwam op zijn tiende naar de jeugdopleiding van Ajax. Hij stroomde niet door naar de selectie, maar vertrok naar andere clubs. Via Spanje en Rusland is de Amsterdammer nu weer terug bij zijn jeugdliefde Ajax. We spreken Quincy over zijn carrière en toekomst.

After a year, Haarlem went bankrupt. You received offers from different clubs and you chose FC Twente. How was it there?

“I was 18 years old and ended up in the A1. I had a great time; within six months I already had a professional contract and I became the captain of Jong Twente. We became champions with Jong Twente and won the Super Cup.”

When Quincy Promes was ten years old, he started playing at Ajax’s youth academy. He did not move on to the selection, but left for other clubs. After successful seasons in The Netherlands, Russia and Spain, the talented player is now back with his first love, Ajax. We talk to Quincy about his career and future.

Hoe was dat, je eerste profcontract?

“Dat was een heel mooi moment, ik kreeg voor het eerst zekerheid en hoefde niet meer te zoeken. Het was een bevestiging dat ik weer goed bezig was, na die slechte periode waarin ik werd weggestuurd bij Ajax. Ik dacht: nu begint het pas. Ik had nog heel veel te bewijzen. Ik wilde naar het eerste elftal, maar de trainer zei: ‘je bent nog net niet ready voor het echte werk. We gaan je verhuren aan Go Ahead Eagles’.”

Je was een talent uit de Ajax jeugdopleiding, toch stroomde je niet door naar de selectie. Wat gebeurde er?

“Van mijn tiende tot mijn zestiende jaar speelde ik in de jeugdopleiding van Ajax. Bij Ajax moet je discipline hebben en doen wat er van je gevraagd wordt. Ik ging altijd overal tegenin. Als we een rondje moesten lopen, vroeg ik: waarom? Dat viel niet altijd goed en na een tijd was het beter voor Ajax om mij uit de opleiding te zetten. Ik ging naar Haarlem, een satellietclub van Ajax, zodat ze me nog wel in de gaten konden houden.”

As a young boy you were a talent and played in Ajax’ youth academy, but you did not move on to the selection. What happened?

“I started playing football in the Ajax youth academy when I was ten years old. At Ajax you have to have discipline and do what is asked of you. I always went against everything. If we had to run laps, I would ask why. That didn’t always work out well and after a while it was better for Ajax to dismiss me.

When I was sixteen years old, I had to leave and went to Haarlem, a satellite club to Ajax, so that Ajax could still keep an eye on me.”

Na een jaar ging Haarlem failliet. Je kreeg aanbiedingen van verschillende clubs en koos voor FC Twente. Hoe was het daar?

“Ik was 18 jaar en kwam in de A1 terecht. Het was een mooie tijd, binnen een half jaar kreeg ik al een profcontract en werd ik aanvoerder van Jong Twente. We zijn met Jong Twente kampioen geworden en wonnen de Super Cup.”

How was that, your first professional contract?

“That was a very nice moment, I didn’t have to look for a club anymore. It was a confirmation that I was doing well again, after that bad period in which I was dismissed from Ajax. I thought: now it’s just beginning. I still had a lot to prove. I wanted to play in the first team, but the trainer said: ‘you are not ready yet, for the real thing. We are going to rent you out to Go Ahead Eagles.”

Daar speelde je onder Erik ten Hag? “Ten Hag was trainer bij Go Ahead Eagles en wilde me graag hebben. Hij zag in mij wat ik zelf nog niet zag en hij ging met me aan de slag.”

Erik ten Hag your current manager at Ajax, was also your manager there?

“Yes, he was. Ten Hag really wanted me to join Go Ahead Eagles. He saw in me what I didn’t see yet and he started working with me.”

Met succes, want je won dat jaar de Gouden Stier voor Talent van het Jaar in de Eerste Divisie.

“Dat jaar promoveerden we met Go Ahead Eagles en ik had me bewezen.

Ik was ready voor het eerste van Twente. Ik keerde terug in Enschede en heb een jaar geknald bij FC Twente. Ik wilde graag langer blijven, maar de club had geldproblemen. Spartak Moskou wilde me graag hebben en Twente kon het geld dat zij voor me neer wilden leggen goed gebruiken. Ik werd naar de uitgang gepusht.” >

QUINCY PROMES Woont samen met zijn vriendin en dochters van 6 en 5 jaar en zoontje van 2 jaar in Amsterdam.

CARRIÈRE Quincy is profvoetballer bij Ajax en speelt in het Nederlands elftal.

Als jonge jongen speelde hij al in de Ajax Jeugd en voordat hij er terugkeerde, voetbalde hij voor clubs FC Twente, Go Ahead Eagles, Spartak Moskou en Sevilla FC.

With success, because that year you won the Gouden Stier for Talent of the Year in the First Division.

“That year, we climbed up to the Eredivisie with Go Ahead Eagles and I had proven myself. I was ready for the first team at Twente. I returned to Enschede for a great year at FC Twente. I wanted to stay longer, but the club had money problems. Spartak Moscow wanted me and Twente could use the money they wanted to pay for me. I was pushed to the exit.”

Hoe kwam je in Moskou terecht?

“De club was heel geïnteresseerd in mij. De president van de club vloog naar het kleine Twente om me persoonlijk te vertellen dat hij mij wilde. Ik had niks met Rusland. Ik ben een donkere jongen en wilde helemaal niet naar Spartak.

Russen zijn heel direct en de president zei me: ‘je moet één ding doen. Ik snap dat je vooroordelen over Rusland hebt, maar pak het vliegtuig en kom zelf kijken hoe het er is’. Ik vloog met mijn zaakwaarnemer naar Rusland en was gelijk verkocht. Alles is groot, het is er druk, Moskou is een echte metropool. De restaurants, de accommodaties, de club – het is de grootste club van Rusland - en het contract dat ik kreeg; ik kon er geen nee tegen zeggen.”

How did you end up in Moscow?

“The club was very interested in me. The president of the club flew to FC Twente to personally tell me that he wanted me. I never thought about playing in Russia, I’m black and didn’t want to go to Spartak at all. Russians are very direct and the president told me: ‘You have to do one thing. I understand that you have prejudice about Russia, but take the plane and come and see for yourself.’ Together with my agent I flew to Russia and was sold immediately. Everything is big, it’s busy, Moscow is a real metropolis. The restaurants, the accommodations, the club - it’s the largest club in Russia and the contract I got; I couldn’t say no.”

Moest je wennen aan het type voetbal daar?

“Een nieuwe club is altijd even wennen. Dat had ik ook toen ik weer terugkwam bij Ajax. Ik ben een Amsterdammer, speelde er vroeger, maar moest toch weer even settelen.

In Rusland had ik dat ook. Ik moest in de eerste periode wennen aan het fysieke voetbal, maar ik pas me snel aan en was er snel gewend.”

Did you have to get used to the type of football there?

“You always have to get used to playing at a new club. I also had that when I returned to Ajax. I am from Amsterdam and used to play there, but even I had to settle down again.

In Russia it was the same. The first period I had to get used to their physical football, but I quickly adjusted.”

Wat is het grootste verschil tussen voetballen in Rusland en de rest van Europa?

“Het aanzien. Als we met Ajax aankomen bij Chelsea, dan denkt Chelsea: we moeten aan de bak vanavond. Ajax is een topclub in Europa. Spartak Moskou heeft ook een goed en sterk team, maar het wordt minder gevolgd door de rest van Europa.”

What is the biggest difference between playing football in Russia and the rest of Europe?

“The way people look at it. When we play against Chelsea with Ajax, the players at Chelsea think: we have to get to work. Ajax is a top club in Europe. Spartak Moscow also has a good and strong team, but it is less followed by the rest of Europe.”

Je was erg succesvol bij Spartak Moskou. Je lag goed in de groep en iedereen liep er met je weg. Je werd topscorer van de Russische competitie en werd in 2017 verkozen tot beste voetballer van het jaar. Na vier seizoenen vertrok je naar Spanje. Waarom koos je voor Sevilla FC? “De president van Sevilla FC gaf aan dat ze mij al vijf jaar volgden, al vanaf mijn tijd bij FC Twente. Hij zei dat een droom voor hen was om mij in een Sevilla-shirt te zien spelen. Ik had drie andere opties, maar bij Sevilla had ik het mooiste en warmste gevoel, ook doordat de president van de club me wist te overtuigen om bij hen te gaan spelen. Ik maak veel keuzes vanuit mijn gevoel.”

You were very successful at Spartak Moscow. You were a beloved player; became the top scorer of the Russian league and you were voted the best footballer of the year in 2017. After four seasons you left for Spain. Why did you choose Sevilla FC? “The president of Sevilla FC told me that they had been following me for five years, since my time at FC Twente. He said it was a dream for them to see me play in a Sevilla shirt. I had three other options, but Sevilla felt the best. Also, because the president of the club managed to convince me to play with them. I make many choices based on my feelings.”

Was Sevilla de juiste keuze?

“Ik hou van risico nemen, zoals met de stap naar Spartak Moskou. Ik leerde bij Sevilla dealen met tegenslagen. We speelden in een 5-3-2-systeem en ik werd op een andere positie, als linksback opgesteld. Dat is niet de Promes die ik eigenlijk ben. De ene keer speelde ik wel, de andere keer weer niet. Ik speelde in een van de beste competities ter wereld, tegen teams als Barcelona en Real Madrid, maar ik heb er niet kunnen laten zien wat ik kan. Ik zie mijn tijd bij Sevilla als een leermoment. Ik heb dan ook geen seconde spijt gehad van mijn keuze om naar Sevilla FC over te stappen.”

Was Seville the right choice?

“I like to take risks, such as the move to Spartak Moscow. At Sevilla, I learned to deal with setbacks. We played in a 5-3-2 system and I had to play in a different position, as a left-back. That is not the Promes that I actually am. I didn’t get to play every match; one week I got to play and then the other week I didn’t. I played in one of the best competitions in the world, against teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid, but I couldn’t show my skills there. I see my time at Sevilla as a learning experience. Therefore, I have never regretted my decision to switch to Sevilla FC.” Ben je een speler die dan op de trainer afstapt?

“Jazeker, na twee weken al. Ik was de laatste transferdag met veel bombarie naar Sevilla gehaald. De eerste wedstrijd speelde ik niet, maar ik had pas twee keer getraind, dus daar kon ik inkomen. Maar de week daarna had ik volop getraind en werd ik weer niet opgesteld. En een week later was het hetzelfde verhaal.

Dus toen vroeg ik de trainer: ‘wat is het plan, ga je me langzaam brengen?’. Ik ben linksbuiten, maar werd bij Sevilla als spits opgesteld en voordat ik het wist stond ik linksback.”

Are you a player who approaches the trainer?

“Yes, Sevilla bought me on the last transfer day. I didn’t play the first game, but I had only trained twice, so that was understandable. But the following week I had trained and was fit and again I couldn’t play. A week later, it was the same story. >

So, then I asked the trainer: ‘What is the plan?’ I am a left winger, but at Sevilla I had to play as a striker and before I knew it my position was left-back.”

Hoe was het in Sevilla?

“Sevilla FC is een prachtige club om voor te spelen en ik had buiten het veld niks te klagen. Het was er heerlijk; altijd warm, een goede sfeer, leuke en sociale mensen. Het is een hele mooie stad.”

How was life in Seville?

“Sevilla FC is a wonderful club to play for and outside the field it was amazing.

I had a great time; it’s always warm, has a good atmosphere and nice and social people. It is a beautiful city.”

Na één seizoen vertrek je bij Sevilla en keer je terug naar Ajax. Hoe is het om terug te zijn bij je jeugdliefde?

“Ik heb er geen woorden voor. Het bizar dat ik via een omweg weer terug ben.

Ik was ballenjongen in het stadion waar ik nu scoor. Mijn jongensdroom is uitgekomen. We hebben op dit moment een fantastische ploeg. Buiten dat we een goed team zijn, zijn we vrienden. Dat stralen we ook uit op het veld. Het is prachtig om met Ajax in de Champions League te spelen want uiteindelijk zijn dat de wedstrijden waar je het voor doet als voetballer.”

After one season you left Sevilla and returned to Ajax. What is it like to be back?

“It is amazing for me to be back. I was a ball boy in the stadium where I now score. My childhood dream has come true. We have a fantastic team at the moment. Aside from being a good team, we are friends. It shows on the field.

It is wonderful to play in the Champions League with Ajax, because in the end those are the matches you want to play as a footballer.”

Hoe vinden je vriendin en kinderen het om terug te zijn?

“Mijn dochters van 6 en 5 jaar en mijn zoon van 2 jaar vinden het vooral fijn dat ze weer dicht bij oma zijn.”

How do your girlfriend and children feel about being back?

“My daughters who are 6 and 5 years old, and my 2-year-old son are particularly pleased that they are close to grandma again.”

Ben je een familieman?

“Ja, ik ben altijd met familie en vind het fijn om ze om me heen te hebben.

Mijn gezin en mijn moeder zijn het belangrijkste. Ik ben ook blij om weer bij mijn vrienden in de buurt te zijn.”

Are you a family man?

“Yes, I am always with family and I like having them around. My family and my mother are the most important. I am also happy to be close to my friends again.”

Je staat nu in de basis in het Nederlands elftal. Hoe is dat?

“Bij m’n clubs liet ik al zien wat ik kan en ik was erop gebrand om het ook in het nationale team te laten zien. In mijn beginperiode bij het Nederlands elftal ging het minder goed, we haalden geen eindtoernooi, de oude garde viel weg. Nu hebben we een nieuw team en doen we het weer goed.”

You also play in the Dutch national team. What is that like?

“I already showed my skills at my clubs and I was keen to show it at the national team as well. When I started in the Dutch team, we weren’t doing so well. We didn’t make it to a final tournament, the old players were retiring. Now we have a new team and we are doing well again.”

Hoe is de sfeer bij het Nederlands elftal?

“Er hangt een topsfeer. We hebben een hele goede groep. De selectie is bijna altijd hetzelfde. Bondscoach Ronald Koeman heeft uitgesproken dat hij met een vaste groep wil werken en zo creëren we een hechte band. We zijn echt één groep, je ziet het ook aan ons spel. Nederland staat weer op de kaart.”

How is the atmosphere at the Dutch national team?

“The atmosphere is great; we have a group of amazing players.

The selection almost always stays the same. National coach Ronald Koeman has said that he wants to work with the same group of people and that is how we create a strong bond. We really are one team, a group; you can tell by our game. We are back on the map.”

Jij zit ook in een goede flow, waar zie jij jezelf in de toekomst spelen?

“Op dit moment zit ik goed op m’n plek bij Ajax. Wel zou ik nog heel graag een keer in Engeland willen spelen. De Premier League is een fantastische competitie. Maar op dit moment ligt mijn focus bij Ajax en wil ik voor de prijzen gaan.”

You are also in a good flow, where do you see yourself playing in the future?

“At the moment I am in the right place, here at Ajax. I would love to play in England someday. The Premier League is a fantastic competition. But at the moment my focus is on Ajax and winning prizes.”

Je viert je doelpunten met het Mask-gebaar. Waar staat het gebaar voor?

“Ik begon ermee in Rusland, het is een soort alter ego.

Ken je de film The Mask? Als Jim Carrey in The Mask het masker opzet, wordt hij een perfecte versie van zichzelf. Dat doe ik op het veld, ik haal alles uit de kast om te winnen. Het is mijn manier van juichen.”

You celebrate your goals with the Mask gesture. What does the gesture stand for?

“I started doing it in Russia, it’s a kind of an alter ego. Do you know the movie The Mask? When Jim Carrey puts on the mask, he becomes a perfect version of himself. I do that on the field, I do everything it takes to win. It is my way of cheering and celebrating.”

Wat was het mooiste moment in je carrière?

“Het kampioenschap met Spartak Moskou. Na 16 jaar werden we weer kampioen. Na het laatste fluitsignaal kwam de hele tribune het veld oprennen.

Dat was een gekkenhuis, niet normaal. Moskou ontplofte.

Daar hebben we geschiedenis geschreven. En ik ook: een jongen uit Amsterdam die naar het grote Rusland gaat en daar kampioen wordt. Ik hoop ook ooit een eindtoernooi met het Nederlands elftal te spelen, dat wordt natuurlijk een fantastisch moment.”

What was the best moment in your career?

“Winning the championship with Spartak Moscow. After 16 years we became champions again. After the last whistle, all the spectators came running up the field. It was a madhouse, Moscow exploded. We wrote history.

I wrote history too: a boy from Amsterdam goes to Russia and becomes a champion. I also hope to play a final tournament with the Dutch national team someday, that would be a fantastic moment.”

Heb je al ideeën over wat je na je carrière wil gaan doen?

OP HET HOOFDKANTOOR VAN GASSAN DIAMONDS

“Ik ben ondernemend ingesteld. Ik heb een kledinglijn, Mask.qp en ben bezig met vastgoed. Dat vind ik erg interessant. Ik maak nog steeds muziek, maar dat breng ik niet uit. Voetbal en muziek maken, gaan niet goed samen. Voetbal is mijn nummer 1, daar ligt mijn echte focus en muziek maken is mijn hobby. Ik heb twee jaar geleden een lied opgenomen met Memphis Depay om te laten zien dat wij onszelf zijn en om jongeren te laten zien dat zij ook zichzelf moeten zijn.

Louis-Ulysse Chopard (1836-1915), the son of a farmer from Sonvilier, quickly conquered Switzerland and the world at the age of 24. The artisan watchmaker created works of art with innovative designs, which early on helped him export to such illustrious places as the court of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Qualities like precision and reliability were very sought-after characteristics in watches, dating all the way back to the 19th century. With unique chronometers and pocket watches, Louis-Ulysse Chopard aimed to fulfill and exceed these "desires".

Thanks to its superb timekeepers, Chopard forged itself a reputation for reliable and high quality watches made in Switzerland. From the start, Chopard won two very prestigious commissions, becoming official provider of watches for «Tir Fédéral» and the Swiss Railway Company. Louis-Ulysse Chopard travelled to Russia, making his way through Poland, Hungary and the Baltic States.

Tsar Nicholas II of Russia was one of his clients. He also struck business with a number of Scandinavian retailers who self-branded his timepieces. Chopard watches thus penetrated the international market.

In Sonvilier, as throughout the Swiss Jura region, local farmers would complement their meagre winter income by assembling watches according to a well established custom that saw watchmaking production tasks be allocated across small independent and specialised units. The components would then be collected -in the case of Chopard by the master watchmaker himself- to then be assembled and fine tuned into the finished product.

At the same time in Pforzheim, Germany, Karl-Scheufele III, goldsmith and watchmaker, son and grandson of entrepreneurs, was seeking to develop ESZEHA, the jewellery and watch company he owned. Reliant on suppliers for his watch movements, he considered acquiring a Swiss manufacture. With this goal in mind, he published an advertisement in the newspapers and went to Geneva to meet potential leads. On the last day of his trip he contacted the last name on his list and met Paul-André Chopard.

Karl Scheufele knew from that instant that they were meant to get along; thirty minutes later, the deal was sealed.

KARL SCHEUFELE III AND HIS WIFE KARIN

In 1957, the young Karl married Karin Ruf. Her father, Fritz Ruf was a dynamic entrepreneur and proved a key supporter of the young couple’s success. Acquiring a manufacture offered the goldsmiths of Pforzheim the opportunity to join the closed circle of major Swiss watchmakers. Thanks to his commercial acumen and passion for travel inherited from his father and grandfather, Karl Scheufele III would go on to lift Chopard out of its lethargy and build an empire.

Chopard is one of the last family-run watchmaking and Jewellery Company. Since the 1980s, Karl and Karin’s children Caroline and Karl-Friedrich have played an active part in the company.

Caroline and Karl-Friedrich are Chopard’s current Co-Presidents.

They each showed their independence: Caroline Scheufele, who is responsible of the ladies’ collections, developed the jewellery section and later the high-end jewellery department while her brother Karl-Friedrich, who managed the men’s collections, developed sports watches during the 1980s and the Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier, which produces the L.U.C movements, in the 1990s.

With the Skull Light, HYT wanted to create the ultimate model to honour of the brand’s first boutique, which recently opened in Kuala Lumpur. This exceptional piece combines all the key innovations the brand has developed in recent years. It represents the very heights of HYT’s expertise.

The watch includes the famous historic calibre from HYT’s founding piece. Entirely developed in-house and driven by two bellows which circulate liquids within its glass capillary to display the time… This is watchmaking for the third millennium, featuring fluid time!

For the animated Skull collection, HYT has developed a new capillary. It perfectly outlines the shape of the skull, which takes centre stage. The power reserve indicator sits in the right eye socket, which gets darker as the piece reaches the end of its 65hour power reserve. The left eye socket houses the seconds indicator. Continuously rotating, these two discs bring the watch to life. The skull itself, made from black DLC titanium, sits on a dial featuring a Clous de Paris stud finish. Each of its contours is highlighted by 5N gold hand-bevelling. The bezel and indices also boast this same exclusive finish.

Finally, to take the level of innovation even further, HYT has combined these two with a third: the first electro-mechanical source ever designed for an haute horlogerie piece. Underneath the rider at 6 o’clock are two LEDs. Activated manually, they brightly illuminate the inside of the watch. The green liquid, containing a special fluorescent dye, is excited by this light source and glows vividly! At the same time, the wash of light flows into every nook and cranny of the skull, literally bringing this skeleton architecture to life, and defying the laws of watchmaking.

It is powered by a purely mechanical source of energy.

The generator is nestled in the middle of the case between 4 and 5 o’clock. It is invisible, and activated by the push-piece located opposite. The mechanism is inspired by a dynamo: the conversion of mechanical power into electricity. This micro-generator is charges by rotating the push-button at 4:30. Then, pressing this same push-button will activate the two LEDs which light up and bathe the Skull Light in a gentle blue glow for up to fifteen seconds, after which the mechanism needs to be rewound. No batteries or electronics are required for this function: the process is completely mechanical. There were three factors that made it particularly complex to develop: the extreme miniaturisation, the curved shape, and the fact, once again, that no development of this type had ever been achieved before. Success has made the Skull Light a hub of the most exclusive innovations ever designed by HYT.

Als hij eenentwintig jaar oud is, gaat hij er werken en doet hij ervaring op binnen elke afdeling. Als zijn grootvader overlijdt, volgt Lesley zijn opa op. “My grandfather hoped that I would come and work for him, but we could have never imagined it turning out this way.”

Lesley Bamberger has been at the helm of Kroonenberg Groep since 1996. When he is twenty-one years old, he starts working at the real estate company founded by his grandfather and gains experience in every department.

After his grandfather passes away, Lesley succeeds him. He re-organizes the company and lets it rise to great heights.

Nowadays, Kroonenberg Groep is one of the most successful real estate companies in the Netherlands. The Gelderlandplein and the Kalverpassage in Amsterdam and the new-build complex Q Residences in Amsterdam Buitenveldert are some of the properties in its portfolio.

How did you end up in your grandfather’s company?

“I started studying to become a brokerage and did an internship with Jones Lang LaSalle, which was then called Jones Lang Wootton and with Richard Ellis, the company that is now CBRE. On November 1, 1986 I started at Kroonenberg Groep. I have seen every discipline within the company. From the service cost settlement to managing the plumbers; I’ve done everything.” >

Is het een voordeel dat je op al die afdelingen gewerkt hebt?

“Ja, die ervaring is belangrijk. Ik weet hoe een servicekostenafrekening moet worden gemaakt, wie ik moet hebben voor het onderhoud en ik weet hoe ik een huurder moet benaderen. Daardoor weet ik beter hoe ik dingen wel en niet moet aanpakken. Ervaring is natuurlijk alles.

Ik ben een autodidact, ik heb veel zelf geleerd.”

Is it an advantage that you have worked in all these departments?

“Yes, that experience is very important. I know how to make a service charge statement, who I need for maintenance and I know how to approach a tenant. I learned how to handle things. Experience is of course everything. I am an autodidact; I have learned a lot myself.”

Toen je er een paar jaar werkte, werd je opa ziek.

“Dat gebeurde toen ik 25 was. Vanaf dat moment lag er al veel verantwoordelijkheid op mijn schouders.”

After worked there for a few years, your grandfather got sick.

“That happened when I was 25. From that moment on, there was a lot of responsibility on my shoulders.”

In 1996 overlijdt jouw opa en kom je alleen aan het roer te staan. Hoe was dat?

“Ik dacht: kan ik dit succes van mijn grootvader vasthouden, gaat mij dat wel lukken? Ik heb toen besloten dat het bedrijf mijn signatuur moest krijgen en ik het op mijn manier moest gaan leiden. Ik heb goed nagedacht over mijn visie en over hoe vastgoed volgens mij beleefd zou moeten worden. Met het koopmanschap van mijn grootvader in gedachten, ben ik gaan bouwen aan het bedrijf zoals dat er nu staat.”

In 1996 your grandfather passed away and you had to run the company by yourself. What was that like?

“I thought: can I hold on to my grandfather’s success and will I succeed? I then decided that the company had to get my signature and I had to manage it my way. I have thought carefully about my vision and how I believe real estate should be experienced. With my grandfather’s trade in mind, I started building the company Kroonenberg Groep is today.”

Dat is je goed afgegaan. Je hebt het bedrijf naar grote hoogte gebracht. Je hebt mooi vastgoed aan jullie portefeuille toegevoegd en verschillende prijzen in ontvangst mogen nemen. Op welke ontwikkeling ben je het meest trots?

“Ik ben trots op het bedrijf, de mensen die er werken en de omvang die we nu hebben. Maar ik ben ook trots op de prijzen die we winnen.

Het gaat niet zozeer om de eer als je een prijs wint, maar het is fijn dat je waardering vanuit de markt krijgt. Dat de markt ziet dat we dingen doen die onderscheidend zijn. Dat is eigenlijk begonnen met de herontwikkeling van The Bank, het voormalig hoofdkantoor van ABN AMRO op het Rembrandtplein. Dat pand hebben we op elk front naar the next level gebracht en dat gaf ons enorm veel exposure. Toen konden we echt laten zien wie en wat we zijn.”

That went amazing, you have taken the company to great heights. You have added beautiful real estate to your portfolio and have been awarded with various prizes. What are you most proud of?

“I am proud of the company, the people who work here and the size that we now have. But I am also proud of the awards we have won. It is not so much about the honour when you win an award, but it is nice knowing that the market acknowledges and appreciates your company. That the market sees that we build outstanding things. That actually started with the redevelopment of The Bank, the former headquarters of ABN AMRO on Rembrandtplein. We brought that building to the next level on every front and that gave us a lot of exposure. We could show who and what we are.”

In Nederland maar ook in het buitenland ontwikkelen jullie topprojecten.

“Overal waar we ontwikkelen, zetten we iets moois neer. De Kalverpassage en het Gelderlandplein in Amsterdam, de Barones in Breda en het Hilvertshof in Hilversum zijn fantastische winkelcentra geworden. Het luxe appartementencomplex Huys in New York is ook prachtig geworden. Onze hele portefeuille heeft een kwaliteitsimpuls gekregen waardoor we de lange termijn kunnen overzien. We zijn continu bezig aan onze portefeuille te sleutelen, waardoor de huurinkomsten verbeteren, wat ten goede komt aan de exploitatiewinst. De waarde is leuk, maar het gaat er ook om hoe een bedrijf aan z’n liquiditeit komt. Je moet een product naar de markt brengen dat voor hogere huren en continuïteit in de huurstroom zorgt.” >

HET IS FIJN DAT DE MARKT ZIET DAT WE DINGEN DOEN DIE ONDERSCHEIDEND ZIJN

You develop top projects in the Netherlands but also abroad.

“Everywhere we develop, we create something beautiful. The Kalverpassage and the Gelderlandplein in Amsterdam, the Baroness in Breda and the Hilvertshof in Hilversum have become fantastic shopping centres. The luxury apartment complex Huys in New York is also beautiful. Our entire portfolio has been given a quality boost so that we can oversee the long term. We are constantly working on improving our portfolio. As a result, our rental income improves, which benefits the exploitation profit. The value of the company is important, but how the company gets its liquidity is even more important. You have to bring products to the market that ensure higher rents and continuity in the rental flow.”

Je bent nu met een nieuwbouwproject in Buitenveldert bezig. Hoe is dat idee ontstaan?

“Deze locatie maakte onderdeel uit van de portefeuille van het Philips Pensioenfonds. We hadden het dus al een tijd in bezit. We wisten dat we op die plek iets nieuws wilden gaan neerzetten en langzaamaan zijn we plannen gaan uitwerken. We hebben ervoor gekozen om huurwoningen in het midden en hoge segment te bouwen, wat heel goed past bij de huidige vraag naar woningen. De bouw is inmiddels in volle gang, we gaan er iets neerzetten wat zich onderscheidt van de rest van de markt. Over zo’n tweeënhalf jaar wordt het opgeleverd.”

You are now working on a new-build project in Buitenveldert. Where did that idea come from?

“This location was part of the Philips Pension Fund portfolio. So, we already had it for a while. We knew that we wanted to put out something new over there and we gradually started working out the plans. We chose to build rental homes in the middle and high segment, which fits very well with the current demand for housing. The construction is now in full swing, we are going to build something that stands out from the rest of the market. In about two and a half years the project will be finished.”

Wat kunnen we van de locatie verwachten?

“De architect is Jeanne Gang, grondlegster van Studio Gang, een zeer gerenommeerd architectenbureau uit Chicago. Time Magazine noemde haar als enige architect in hun TIME 100, de lijst met meest invloedrijke personen ter wereld van 2019. Jeanne is een enorme toegevoegde waarde voor dit project. De locatie krijgt een internationale uitstraling, waarmee we met de Zuidas concurreren.

Architectenbureau Rijnboutt, met wie we ook hebben gewerkt aan winkelcentrum Gelderlandplein, is betrokken als co-architect.”

What can we expect from the location?

“The architect is Jeanne Gang, founder of Studio Gang, a renowned architectural firm from Chicago. Time Magazine named her the only architect in their TIME 100, the list of the most influential people in the world in 2019. Jeanne is a huge value for this project. The location will have an international appearance and will compete with the Zuidas.

Rijnboutt architecture and urban design firm, with whom we also worked on the Gelderlandplein shopping centre, is involved as a co-architect.”

Je werkt met grote architecten, maar je bent erg hands-on. Bemoei jij je ook met de styling?

“Ja, er wordt niks besloten voordat ik ja zeg.”

You work with great architects, but you are very hands-on. Do you also get involved with styling?

“Yes, nothing is decided before I say yes.”

Waar haal je de inspiratie vandaan?

“Het heeft te maken met hoe ik denk. Ik sta altijd aan, ik kijk altijd om me heen en ben nooit klaar met werken. Zo zit ik in elkaar. Als ik op reis ben, bijvoorbeeld naar New York of Miami, dan kijk ik altijd naar vastgoed. In Miami raak ik geïnspireerd door de Bal Harbour Mall en de Aventura Mall. Dat zijn voor mij voorbeelden van hoe je een winkelcentrum next level zou moeten ontwikkelen. Maar over smaak valt niet te twisten.” > GASSAN MAGAZINE

How do you get inspired?

“It has to do with how I think. I am always focused; I always look around and I never finish working. That’s how I am. When I am traveling, I always look at real estate.

For example, in Miami I am inspired by the Bal Harbour Mall and the Aventura Mall. For me, those are examples of how you should develop a shopping mall next level. But you can’t argue about taste.”

Jouw projecten vallen wel in de smaak. Zo schreef de New York Times over Huys ‘The Dutch are back’, een waanzinnig compliment.

“Huys in New York gaf een enorme boost. Toen konden we ook in het buitenland laten zien dat we in staat waren om projecten anders aan te pakken. Het is hartstikke leuk als je die waardering krijgt en het was ook commercieel een goed project dat ons geen windeieren gelegd heeft.

Maar het is vooral enorm leuk om mooie dingen te maken.”

Your projects are praised by many. The New York Times, for example, wrote about Huys ‘The Dutch are back’, an enormous compliment.

“Huys in New York gave a huge boost on an international level. It showed how we are able to approach projects differently. It is really nice if you get that appreciation and financially it was also a successful project. But making beautiful things is the greatest accomplishment.”

Smaken die projecten in het buitenland naar meer?

“Ik ben heel hands-on en dat maakt het dus ook lastig.

Het is moeilijk om in New York steeds te roepen wat ik wil, want ik ben er niet altijd. Er is ook een andere mentaliteit in het buitenland, die moet je leren begrijpen.

Ik ben daar niet in staat om dezelfde vuist te maken zoals ik in Amsterdam kan. De belangen die we in Nederland hebben, zijn zovele malen groter dan die we in New York, Chicago, Miami of Toronto hebben.”

Do you want to develop more projects abroad?

“I am very hands-on and that makes it difficult. I’m not always around to tell them how I want things done. Plus, the mentality abroad in different. There, I can’t stand-up for things I want, the way I can here in Amsterdam. We have much bigger interests in the Netherlands than we have in New York, Chicago, Miami or Toronto.”

“We zijn heel loyaal naar de mensen waar we goed mee werken. We willen mensen met kwaliteit om ons heen. Als mensen zich hebben bewezen en ze kunnen ons in een ander project helpen, dan kiezen we opnieuw voor hen. Het werkt niet als we iedere keer het wiel moeten uitvinden met nieuwe partijen die ons niet begrijpen en wij hen niet begrijpen.”

You often work with the same people. For example, for the new-build complex Q Residences in Buitenveldert you work with architectural firm Rijnboutt with whom you previously worked for The Bank.

“We are very loyal to the people we work with. We want people with quality around us. If they have proven themselves and they can help us in another project, we will work with them again. It’s easier for us to work with people and companies that we know and that deliver quality, than getting used to and learning to understand new partners.”

“Wij proberen ons op alle fronten te onderscheiden. In plaats van een plant zetten wij kunst neer op de plekken waar het kan. Ook in onze winkelcentra.

Andere vastgoedondernemers denken misschien: jeetje wat een duur beeld, moet ik dat daar wel neerzetten? Het gaat in een winkelcentrum om beleving.

Wij vinden dat alles, ook de details, moet passen bij wat wij uitstralen als Kroonenberg Groep. Of het nou de gebouwen zijn die we neerzetten, de verbouwingen die we doen, de appartementen die we maken. We gaan voor kwaliteit.”

Art is a signature of Kroonenberg Groep.

“We try to distinguish ourselves on all fronts. Instead of a plant, we put art in places where it is possible. Also in our shopping centres. Other real estate companies may think: should I put such an expensive sculpture there? In a shopping centre it’s all about experience. We believe that everything, including the details, must match our identity as Kroonenberg Groep. Whether it is the buildings that we construct, the renovations that we do, the apartments that we develop. We deliver quality.”

Koop je die kunst zelf?

“Ja, ik vind het erg leuk om bezig te zijn met het totaalconcept dat wij als Kroonenberg Groep naar de markt brengen.”

Do you buy that art yourself?

“Yes, I really enjoy working on the total concept that we as Kroonenberg Groep are bringing to the market.”

Je bent een echte Amsterdammer, zie jij je ooit in het buitenland wonen?

“Nee, ik ben wel graag in het buitenland, ik kom graag in bijvoorbeeld New York en Miami, maar m’n roots en mijn basis liggen in Amsterdam.”

You are born and raised in Amsterdam and still live here. Do you see yourself living abroad?

“No, I like to travel abroad, for example I love visiting New York and Miami, but my roots and my base are in Amsterdam.” >

Je hebt al een aantal iconische gebouwen herontwikkeld. Zijn er panden die jij graag onder handen zou willen nemen?

“Ik zou ooit nog een groot project in hartje New York willen oppakken. The Bank in Amsterdam was een groots project, het was een van de grootste gebouwen in de binnenstad, met een impact op de omgeving. Ik zou in New York net zo’n spectaculair project willen oppakken. Maar ik weet niet of dat verwezenlijkt gaat worden, of we daar iets kunnen kopen wat interessant genoeg is.”

You have already redeveloped a number of iconic buildings. Are there properties that you would like to work on?

“One day I would like to work on a large project in the heart of New York. The Bank in Amsterdam was a great project, it was one of the largest buildings in the city centre. If there would be a spectacular project like that in New York, that would be amazing. But I don’t know if I would be able to buy something that is interesting enough in New York.”

Je staat altijd aan. Wat doe jij om te ontspannen?

“Ik ben een echte family man, dus ik breng veel tijd met mijn familie door.

Daarnaast sport ik vaak en ga ik graag naar voetbalwedstrijden kijken.”

You are always focused. What do you do to relax?

“I am a real family man, so I spend a lot of time with my family. I also often exercise and I like to watch football matches.”

Ik heb waanzinnig veel respect voor hoe jij het vastgoedbedrijf hebt neergezet en uitgebreid. Welk advies geef jij aan iemand die zijn carrière net start?

“Denk conservatief en blijf hands-on. Als je een eigen bedrijf of verantwoordelijkheid hebt, moet je dingen doen die je je kan permitteren.

Doe alleen zaken waar je verstand van hebt.”

I have a great amount of respect for how you have set up and expanded the company. What would you advice someone who is just starting his career?

HISTORIC GRAND PRIX Ook dit jaar veilden Chopard en GASSAN een speciaal voor het evenement ontwikkelde Chopard Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort ‘winners edition’. Andreas Nestele van Chopard overhandigde het unieke chronograafhorloge aan de hoogste bieder. MUSEUMPLEIN POLO De vierde editie van het unieke paardensport evenement ‘Museumplein Polo Amsterdam’ vond plaats van vrijdag 27 september tot en met zondag 29 september 2019.

Tijdens het evenement kwam niet alleen de polosport aan bod maar werden er ook verschillende demonstraties vanuit andere disciplines van de ruitersport gegeven.

Dit jaar had GASSAN samen met Royal Coster Diamonds een gezamenlijke stand.

Deze combinatie van twee Amsterdamse diamantairs is het resultaat van een jarenlange samenwerking die tot op de dag van vandaag zeer succesvol is.

BIËNNALE BRABANT Van vrijdag 8 november tot en met zondag 24 november vond de 4e editie van Biënnale Brabant plaats in de karakteristieke Koepelhal in de Tilburgse Spoorzone. L A F FA S H I O N P L AY E R AWA R D S Vitesse-middenvelder Navarone Foor (27) ontving maandagavond 4 november j.l. de Fashion Player Award 2019 tijdens het jaarlijkse voetbalevent georganiseerd door wlifestyle- en fashionmerk Life After Football. Navarone Foor ontving de prijs van Life After Football-oprichter en ex-Feyenoord-vleugelspeler Regi Blinker en FunX-DJ Fernando Halman.

Honderden prominente collega’s uit de voetbalwereld waren getuige van de prijsuitreiking in een sfeervolle Zuiveringshal in Amsterdam-West. Het was de twaalfde keer dat Life After Football de voetbalcultuur vierde met een gala-avond en voor het zesde jaar dat de Fashion Player Award wordt uitgereikt. Na de prijsuitreiking volgde een optreden van Jairzinho. Deze prijs werd mogelijk gemaakt in samenwerking met BOSS, GASSAN en Schaffrath.

Ook dit jaar is de koetsentocht van start gegaan op ons hoofdkantoor GASSAN Diamonds.

KOETSENTOCHT Op donderdag 19 september j.l. heeft de Koetsentocht plaatsgevonden. Al meer dan 25 jaar wordt deze georganiseerd door de unieke samenwerking van de De Telegraaf, GASSAN, CafÊ Hoppe, Hotel De L’Europe en Heineken Experience. Voor deze Koetsentocht zijn alle in Den Haag gevestigde ambassadeurs uitgenodigd om Amsterdam op een bijzondere manier te ervaren. Ook dit jaar is de koetsentocht van start gegaan op het hoofdkantoor GASSAN Diamonds. Alle ambassadeurs kwamen hier bij elkaar om na een welkomstwoord en Hollandse delicatessen in de koetsen te stappen en te vertrekken naar de volgende highlights.

Dinsdag 29 oktober werden alle fCN-leden ontvangen op het sprookjesachtige Kasteel De Wittenburg in Wassenaar tijdens de fCN GASSAN Jewel Awards 2019. De prachtige juwelen van Choices by DL schitterden in de Franse Salon van het kasteel. Met de klanken van Jazz & Wine en de geweldige zangeres Joyce Stevens, kon men deelnemen aan de whiskey proeverij van De Koninklijke De Kuyper. Waar de avond allemaal om draaide waren de 4 vier juwelen van ondernemers, Mark de Witte van de Koninklijke De Kuyper, Vivian Minten – de Boer van ONVZ, Guido Ide van Wasned BV en Won Yip van Yip Group. Hij reed in elf Grand Prixs en racete onder andere in de Champ Car Series en de IndyCar Series. Tegenwoordig is hij vaste Formule 1-analist bij de zender Ziggo Sport. Hoe ziet hij de toekomst van de Nederlandse autosport?

Racing driver Robert Doornbos turned his love for fast cars into his profession and climbed to the top in motorsport, Formula 1. He drove in eleven Grand Prix races and raced in the Champ Car Series and the IndyCar Series. After his racing career, he became a Formula 1 analyst at Ziggo Sport. How does he see the future of Dutch motorsport?

“Ik was altijd al gek van auto’s en mijn vader is ook een ouderwetse petrolhead, zoals ze dat zo mooi zeggen. Er moet benzine door je aderen stromen.

Mijn eerste autootje was een Opel Corsa die van de sloop kwam.

De monteurs van het bedrijf van mijn vader hadden hem in elkaar gezet en ik was elk weekend aan het driften op het industrieterrein van het bedrijf.

M’n vader legde me één keer uit hoe het werkte: het remmen, het schakelen en daarna ging ik het zelf proberen. Ik speelde James Bond, reed op twee wielen en leerde er autorijden. Ik kreeg er een enorme car control van.”

How did you end up in the car world?

“I have always been crazy about cars and my father is also an old-fashioned petrol head. I believe you have to have petrol running through your veins.

My first car was an Opel Corsa that was about to be demolished. The mechanics at my father’s company assembled the car. My father explained to me how the care worked: the driving, braking and shifting and then I tried it myself.

I was driving and drifting the car every weekend on the industrial site of the company. I learned how to drive, played James Bond and rode on two wheels.

It gave me a lot of car control.”

“In het weekend was ik altijd bezig met auto’s en tennis was iets dat ik doordeweeks deed. Dat was mijn sport en ik dacht: ik word tennisser. Ik had

er nooit over nagedacht dat ik Formule 1 coureur kon worden. Ik keek op televisie naar de races in Japan en naar coureurs als Ayrton Senna. Het waren net superhelden. De man die de kranen van mijn vaders bedrijf spoot, had ook een kartteam en een raceteam. Op mijn zestiende zei hij me dat ik eens moest gaan rijden op het circuit van Zandvoort. De eerste ronde op het circuit reed ik lekker, tijdens de tweede ronde ging ik al net zo snel als de jongens die jarenlang in zijn team zaten en in derde ronde hing ik ondersteboven in de vangrail. De mensen van het team zeiden: ‘hij is duidelijk snel en heeft een zware rechtervoet. Hij moet alleen wel wat technieken leren’. Zo is het begonnen. M’n vader was distributeur van het Japanse bedrijf Komatsu dat het Williams team in de Formule 1 sponsorde. M’n vader kreeg in 1998 een uitnodiging voor de Grand Prix van België en nam mij mee. Ik zat naast regerend wereldkampioen Jacques Villeneuve aan tafel en raakte met hem aan de praat. ‘Toffe job heb je’, zei ik hem en hij vertelde dat hij pas op zijn zestiende was begonnen. Toen ging er bij mij een lampje branden en ik zei tegen mijn vader: ‘laten we volop voor het racen gaan’ en ik gooide mijn tennisracket in de hoek.”

You were actually on the road to become a professional tennis player.

“During the weekends I was always busy with cars and tennis was something that I did during the week. That was my sport and I thought I would become a tennis player. I had never thought that I could become a Formula 1 driver.

I watched the races in Japan and drivers like Ayrton Senna on television.

They were just like superheroes to me. The man who spray painted the cranes from my father’s company also had a go-kart team and a racing team.

When I was sixteen years old, he told me that I should go for a ride on the racetrack in Zandvoort. The first lap on the racetrack went well, during the second lap I went as fast as the guys who were in his team for years and during the third lap, I was upside down in the guardrail. The people of the team said: ‘he is clearly fast and has a heavy right foot. He just needs to learn some techniques.’

That’s how it started. My father was a distributor for the Japanese company Komatsu that sponsored the Williams Team in Formula 1. My father received an invitation to the Grand Prix in Belgium in 1998 and took me with him.

I sat down at the table next to reigning world champion Jacques Villeneuve and started talking to him. ‘You got a nice job’ I told him and he said he had only started at the age of sixteen. Then it hit me and I told to my father: ‘let’s go all in for racing’.” > GASSAN MAGAZINE

Je was al behoorlijk succesvol in de tennissport?

“Ik zat in het Nederlands juniorteam. Maar de droom van Wimbledon was nooit zo sterk als de droom om de Formule 1 op Silverstone te rijden.

Het gevoel dat je er alles voor opzij wil zetten, had ik nooit bij tennis. Bij het racen had ik dat wel.”

You were already quite successful in tennis?

“I was on the Dutch junior team. But the Wimbledon dream was never as strong as the dream of driving the Formula 1 at Silverstone. I never had the feeling I wanted to put everything aside for tennis. I did feel like that when it came to racing.”

Al na een jaar racete je mee in de Opel Lotus klasse en werd je vicekampioen.

Je had snel succes, hoe verklaar je dat?

“Toen ik op mijn zeventiende klaar was met school, verhuisde ik naar Engeland en vanaf dat moment ging ik vol voor de racerij. Ik tekende bij een team en hield me doordeweeks fit met karten en in het weekend waren de races. Ik behaalde goede resultaten, ik viel op en kreeg sponsoring en dan kan je doorgroeien.”

After just one year you raced in the Opel Lotus class and became vice champion. You were successful quickly, how do you explain that?

“When I finished school at the age of seventeen, I moved to England and from that moment I went all in for racing. I signed with a team and kept fit with carting during the week and the races were on the weekend. My results were good, I stood out and received sponsorship and then you can continue to grow.”

Na de Formule Ford reed je drie jaar in verschillende Formule 3 series.

Hoe was dat?

“Ik kreeg Philip Morris als sponsor, viel op en kon toen bij Red Bull Racing rijden. In de autosport is het een kwestie van snel pieken. Je moet het eerste jaar in een klasse opvallen. Al snel woonde ik met andere coureurs bij het trainingscentrum in Italië. Ik werd heel goed voorbereid en begeleid en leefde daar echt als een topsporter. Ik was 24/7 met het racen bezig. Ik leerde veel over het lichaam, at uitgebalanceerd en had 6,5 % bodyvet. Ik besefte me dat dit mijn kans was. M’n vrienden zeiden ook: ‘waar ben je nou? We zien je nooit meer’. Maar ik was bezig met m’n droom.”

After the Formula Ford you drove in different Formula 3 series for three years.

What was that like?

“Philip Morris sponsored me, I stood out and I was able to drive for Red Bull Racing. In motorsport it is a matter of fast peaks. You have to stand out the first year. Soon after, I was living with other drivers at the training centre in Italy.

I was very well prepared and supervised and really lived the life of a top athlete. I was racing 24/7. I learned a lot about the body, ate a balanced diet and had 6.5 % body fat. I realized that this was my chance. My friends told me: ‘where are you?

We hardly see you anymore.’ But I was busy following my dream.”

Toen ging het snel. In 2004 boekte je vier podiumplaatsen en werd je uitgeroepen tot Rookie of the Year tijdens het FIA International Formule 3000 kampioenschap.

“Dat was de laatste fase voor de Formule 1. Die klasse heet nu de formule 2 en is een hele gave klasse. Je rijdt er in het voorprogramma van de Formule 1 en je wil je bewijzen aan de Formule 1 teambazen. In de Formule 2 rijdt ieder team met dezelfde banden, dezelfde motor en hetzelfde chassis. Al je daar iemand ziet winnen of iets bijzonders ziet doen, dan is het echt het werk van de coureur. En komt het niet – zoals in de Formule 1 – doordat het ene team beter materiaal heeft dan een ander team. Ik won de race op het Belgische circuit Spa-Francorchamps en dat was vrij uniek als rookie.”

Things went quickly after that. In 2004 you booked four podium positions and you were named Rookie of the Year during the FIA International Formula 3000 championship.

“That was the final phase before I entered Formula 1. That class is now called Formula 2 and is a very cool class. You are supporting Formula 1 and you want to prove yourself to the Formula 1 team bosses. In Formula 2, every team drives with the same tires, the same engine and the same chassis. If you see someone winning or doing something special, it really is the driver’s job. And it is not - as in Formula 1 - because one team has better material than another team. I won the race at the Belgian racetrack Spa-Francorchamps and that was quite unique as a rookie.”

Hierna maakte je je debuut in de Formule 1?

“Ik stond op de grid voor mijn race in de Formule 3000. Daar liepen ook de Formule 1 teambazen rond. Dan krijg je van mij een test in de Formule 1’. Dat is ondenkbaar in een race waarin alle auto’s hetzelfde materiaal hebben. Maar die dag alles zat mee. Het begon te regenen en ik ging als de brandweer. Na een uur en een kwartier kwam ik over de finish en ik had gewonnen. Ik vroeg gelijk met hoeveel voorsprong. Dat was 62 seconden.

Ik parkeerde de auto, sprong eruit, omhelsde mijn team en rende naar Eddie Jordan in de Formule 1 paddock. Hij zei:’ belofte maakt schuld, kom vanavond maar langs’. Vier weken later maakte ik m’n Formule 1 debuut in China.” >

After this you made your debut in Formula 1?

“I was on the grid for my race in Formula 3000. Formula 1 team bosses were also there. I used the cheekiness people from Rotterdam are known for and tapped Eddie Jordan from Team Eddie Jordan Racing on his shoulder.

I introduced myself and said it was my dream to become a Formula 1 driver. He said that I was not the only one there with that dream and he wanted to walk on. I told him it really was my dream and asked him what I should do. Then he said: ‘try to win this race a minute faster than the other drivers. Then I will let you test for Formula 1.’ That is unthinkable in a race where all cars have the same material. But that day everything went right. It started to rain and I went super-fast. After an hour and fifteen minutes I crossed the finish line and I had won.

I asked how much faster than the other drives; the answer was 62 seconds. I immediately parked the car, jumped out, embraced my team and ran to Eddie Jordan in the Formula 1 paddock. He said, ‘I have to keep my promise, come by tonight.’ Four weeks later I made my Formula 1 debut in China.”

Wat een kans, dat was vast een jongensdroom die uitkwam?

“Het was heel spannend. Ik kreeg een manual opgestuurd met de opdracht ‘leer dat maar uit je hoofd’.

What an opportunity, that must have been a childhood dream come true?

“It was very exciting. I received a manual and they told me to learn it by heart. The steering wheel in a Formula 1 car has 70 functions, the Formula 3000 cars I drove until then only had a simple wheel and a gear stick.

So, I had a lot to learn.”

Hoe was die eerste race in de Formule 1?

“M’n debuut was een prachtig moment. Dan hoor je er echt bij. Ik stond op de grid samen met mijn helden.

Ik zag DOO, de afkorting van mijn naam tussen de SCH van mijn grote held Michael Schumacher en de RAI van Kimi Räikkönen staan. Ik reed voor Minardi, het kleinste team en had wat moeite om te overleven. Wij hadden een budget van 88 miljoen dollar en ik vocht tegen teams met een budget van 400 miljoen dollar. Maar ik stond er. Mijn eerste jongensdroom kon ik afvinken.”

What was the first race in Formula 1 like?

“My debut was a wonderful moment. It made me feel like I made it. I was on the grid with my heroes. I saw DOO, the abbreviation of my name, between the SCH of my hero Michael Schumacher and the RAI of Kimi Räikkönen.

I drove for Minardi, the smallest team, and had some trouble keeping up. We had a budget of 88 million dollars and I fought against teams with a budget of 400 million dollars. But I was where I wanted to be. I was able to check off my first childhood dream.”

Dat moest een goed gevoel geven?

“Het was een enorme kick. Niet alleen mijn jongensdroom kwam uit, ik heb ook van mijn hobby m’n beroep kunnen maken. Ik kreeg betaald voor wat ik het liefste doe. Al het bloed zweet en tranen betaalde zich terug.”

That had to feel good?

“It got a huge kick out of it. Not only did my childhood dream come true, I was also able to turn my hobby into a profession. I got paid for what I love to do. All the blood, sweat, tears and hard work paid off.”

Je reed je debuutrace ook tegen Jacques Villeneuve, met wie je een paar jaar daarvoor het gesprek had waardoor jij je droom achternaging.

“Journalisten hadden het verhaal gehypete en Villeneuve zei: ‘hij is een snelle leerling’. In ronde 32 crashte ik met Villeneuve. Hij wilde me voorbij, ik gaf geen ruimte en we vlogen van de baan af. Dan crash je in je debuutrace met een voormalig wereldkampioen. Na de race zei hij in een interview: ‘Leuk voor hem dat z’n droom is uitgekomen, maar hij is nog een beetje wild’, haha.”

You also drove your debut race against Jacques Villeneuve, with whom you had the conversation that made you pursue your dream.

“Journalists had hyped the story and Villeneuve said ‘he is a fast learner.’ In round 32 I crashed with Villeneuve.

He wanted to pass me by, I gave him no space and we flew off the track. Yes, I crashed in my debut race with a former world champion. After the race he said in an interview: ‘It’s nice for him that his dream came true, but he is still a bit wild’, haha.” > GASSAN MAGAZINE

Zat je op je plek bij Minardi?

“Ik dacht na die eerste races niet: ik ben er nu. Als je uit je auto stapt en ziet je dat je een paar seconden verschil hebt met Ferrari, en dan is de volgende stap dat je in een beter team met beter materiaal wil komen. Een jaar later zat ik bij een beter team, bij Red Bull Racing.”

Were you at your place at Minardi?

“After those first races I didn’t think I was where I always wanted to be. When you get out of your car and see that you finished a few seconds behind Ferrari, your next step is that you want to be in a better team with better equipment. A year later I was with a better team, with Red Bull Racing.”

Hoe ging het je daar af?

“In 2006 was ik testrijder voor Red Bull Racing en racete voor het team in de Formule 1. Na een tijd kozen ze een andere coureur die in de Formule 1 mocht racen. Zo hard is die wereld, het is komen en gaan. Het is lastig om er te komen en nog lastiger om er te blijven. Red Bull wilde me niet kwijt. Ik bleef testrijder voor ze en ging met hun steun naar Amerika om voor Minardi Team USA te rijden in de Champ Car World Serie, de latere IndyCar Series.

Dat is een hele gave klasse, eigenlijk de Amerikaanse versie van de Formule 1. De auto’s zijn aan elkaar gelijk, zodat het talent van de rijders weer naar boven komt. In de Formule 1 was ik gewend om op de twaalfde plek te eindigen. Hier kon ik winnen. Als jonge atleet was het bijna mooier dan het racen in de Formule 1. Daar miste ik de kick van op zondagavond thuiskomen na een overwinning.

De snelste zijn, op het podium staan, champagne spuiten.

Dat gevoel dat je echt competitief bent. Dat had ik in Amerika wel.

Ik heb dat eerste jaar een aantal races gewonnen en stond 9 keer op het podium.”

How did that happen?

“In 2006 I was a test driver for Red Bull Racing and raced for the Formula 1 team. After a while, they chose another driver who was allowed to race in Formula 1. The world of racing is hard; drivers come and go. It is difficult to get there and even harder to stay there.

Red Bull didn’t want to lose me. So, I stayed test driving for them and with their support went to America to ride for Minardi Team USA in the Champ Car World Series, now named the IndyCar Series.

That is a very cool class. It’s kind of the American version of Formula 1, but the cars are equal, so that the talent of the drivers comes up again. In Formula 1, I was used to finishing in twelfth place.

But in the United States I could win again. As a young athlete it was almost more beautiful racing there, than it was in Formula 1.

In Formula 1 I missed the kick of coming home on Sunday evening after a victory. I missed feeling really competitive. In America that feeling came back. I won a number of races and booked 9 podium positions that first year.”

Waarom zette je een punt achter je carrière?

“Ik heb vier jaar in Amerika gewoond en stopte abrupt toen de rechtszaak (Robert had een conflict met een voormalig sponsor over sponsorgeld, red) begon te spelen. Het racen is een gevaarlijke sport en ik was in mijn hoofd met de rechtszaak bezig terwijl ik 380 kilometer per uur reed. Toen dacht ik: ik speel met mijn leven, ik moet eerst de rechtszaak oplossen.”

Why did you end your career?

“I lived in America for four years and had to quit when I was focusing too much on the lawsuit (Robert had a conflict with a former sponsor about sponsor money, ed.). Racing is a dangerous sport and I was thinking about the lawsuit while I was driving 380 kilometres an hour. I realised I was playing with my life, I had to resolve the case first.”

Jij bent nu onder andere analist bij de Formule 1-programma’s van Ziggo Sport.

Hoe ben je daar terechtgekomen?

“In 2014 was ik zoekende naar wat ik na mijn carrière wilde doen. Toen mijn sponsor Jumbo liet weten dat ze Max steunden in de Formule 3 en zeiden: ‘we gaan hem waarschijnlijk volgend jaar laten debuteren in de Formule 1’ ben ik naar Ziggo gestapt. Ik adviseerde hen om de Formule 1 tvrechten te kopen en mij als exclusieve analist te nemen. Ik dacht: we zijn een chauvinistisch land, als een Nederlander bij een goed team goede prestaties levert, kan het een grote sport worden.

Toen Max net in de Formule 1 startte, lieten we alleen de wedstrijden op zondag zien. Sinds twee jaar pakken we het groots aan, met een hele show er omheen. Ik heb het heft in eigen hand genomen.

Ik heb zelf de stap gezet om analist te worden. Je moet het zelf doen. Als je thuiszit, gebeurt er niks.”

You are now an analyst for the Formula 1 shows at Ziggo Sport. How did you end up there?

“In 2014 I was asking myself what I wanted to do after my career. When my sponsor Jumbo told me about them supporting Max in Formula 3 and that they would probably make him debut in Formula 1 the next year, I went to Ziggo. I advised them to buy the Formula 1 TV rights and to take me as an exclusive analyst. I figured since we are a chauvinist country, if a Dutchman performs well with a good team, it can become a major sport. When Max just started in Formula 1, we only showed the games on Sunday. Two years ago, it started to become a big project and we now have an informative show around the races. I took matters into my own hands. I took the step to become an analyst myself.

I believe you have to do it yourself. Nothing happens when you don’t do anything.”

De racemania in Nederland is in volle gang.

“Max Verstappen is de Messi van de autosport. Een keer in het decennium komt er een supertalent als Max voorbij. Iemand die op zo’n jonge leeftijd zoveel kan en presteert, dat is uniek.

En dat wordt alleen maar groter. We komen met Ziggo de huiskamer binnen. Het is een complexe sport, de teams, de strijd. Wij proberen dat duidelijk uit te leggen, er is zoveel te vertellen over de sport.”

The race mania in the Netherlands is in full swing.

“Max Verstappen is the Messi of motorsport. Once in the decade a super talent like Max comes by.

Someone who can do so much at such a young age is unique. Racing is a complex sport; the teams, the battle. At Ziggo, we try to explain that, there is so much to tell about the sport.”

De Grand Prix komt volgend jaar terug naar Nederland.

“De Grand Prix in Zandvoort is een heel uitdagend project. Prins Bernhard van Oranje heeft de missie om de Formule 1 na 35 jaar weer terug naar Nederland te halen en dat is waarom hij Circuit >

Zandvoort gekocht heeft. Qua timing is het perfect, met Max Verstappen die zo goed presteert. Het Orange Army, de fanbase van Max is heel groot. Bij een race in Oostenrijk zitten er zo’n 30.000 man in het oranje op de tribune, dat is voor de formule 1 ongekend. Als er in Nederland wordt gereden, wordt het echt een Nederlands feestje.”

The Grand Prix is returning to the Netherlands next year.

“The Grand Prix in Zandvoort is a very challenging project. Prince Bernhard van Oranje has the mission to bring Formula 1 back to the Netherlands after 35 years and that is why he bought Circuit Zandvoort. The timing is perfect, with Max Verstappen performing so well. The Orange Army, Max’ the fan base, is very large.

During a race in Austria there were about 30,000 people dressed in the colour orange supporting Max. That’s unique in Formula 1. When the Grand Prix will take place in the Netherlands, it will really be a Dutch party.”

In hoeverre ben jij betrokken bij de terugkeer van de Grand Prix naar Nederland?

“Ik heb een partnership met de bedrijven die de terugkeer bewerkstellingen en adviseer de bedrijven over de zakelijke kansen.”

How are you involved in the return of the Grand Prix to the Netherlands?

“I have a partnership with the companies that arrange the return and I advise companies on business opportunities.”

Is het circuit van Zandvoort een goede baan voor Max? “Het is een uitdagende baan. De keren dat Max er heeft gereden, heeft hij gewonnen. Het is smal, de muren staan dichtbij, het heeft hoogteverschillen en bijzondere karakteristieken. Het is absoluut geen saai circuit, juist uitdagend en spannend. Het is bijna te vergelijken met een straatcircuit waar je lastig en met veel risico kan inhalen.”

Is Circuit Zandvoort a good racetrack for Max? “It’s a challenging and exciting racetrack. Every time Max drove there, he won.

But it is narrow, the walls are close, it has height differences and special characteristics. It is definitely not a boring circuit. You can almost compare it to a street racetrack where it’s hard to pass by and you would have to take a lot of risks.”

Kan Max hier winnen?

“Als je denkt dat iets onmogelijk is, dan doet Max het toch. Hij heeft bewezen dat hij boven z’n materiaal uit kan stijgen. Maar als het vermogen er niet is, ten opzichte van Ferrari of Mercedes, dan wordt het lastig. Het chassis en de motor van z’n auto moeten van een dusdanig niveau zijn dat hij daar kan winnen.”

Can Max win here?

“If you think something is impossible, Max proves otherwise. He has proven that he can rise above his material. But if the power isn’t there, compared to Ferrari’s or Mercedes’ equipment, then it becomes tricky. The chassis and engine of his car must be of excellent quality for him to win there.”

Hoe zie jij de toekomst van Nederland in de autosportwereld?

“Autosport is op dit moment heel populair in Nederland, de kartbanen komen als paddenstoelen uit de grond en alle vaders hopen dat hun zoon de volgende Max Verstappen wordt, dus dat is heel leuk. Het blijft een lastige sport, omdat je met sponsoring zit en veel stappen moet zetten. Andere raceklassen, sponsororen, nieuwe talenten; iedereen gaat profiteren van de komst van de Grand Prix. Qua coureurs is Nyck de Vries een supertalent. Of hij ooit Formule 1 coureur gaat worden, weet ik niet. Maar hij heeft bewezen dat hij van z’n hobby z’n beroep heeft kunnen maken. Ik denk dat hij mooie carrière als autocoureur voor de boeg heeft.”

How do you see the future of Dutch motorsport?

“Motorsport is very popular in the Netherlands at the moment, the go-kart tracks are booming business and all fathers hope that their son will be the next Max Verstappen, so that is great fun. It remains a difficult sport because you need sponsors and have to take many steps. Other racing classes, sponsors, new talents;

everyone will benefit from the return of the Grand Prix.

In terms of drivers, Nyck de Vries is a super talent. Whether he will become a Formula 1 driver, I don’t know. But he proved to be able to turn his hobby into a profession. I think he has a great career as a racing driver ahead of him.”

Stimuleer jij jouw zoontje als hij de autosport in wil gaan?

“Zeker weten. Sterker nog: hij kreeg bij z’n geboorte van Red Bull al z’n eerste auto met z’n naam erop. Porsche gaf hem laatst ook een auto, waar hij niet uit te slaan is. Would you encourage your son if he wants to get into racing?

“Sure. In fact, he got his first car with his name on it from Red Bull when he was born. Porsche also gave him a car, recently.

He loves driving them. The batteries of the cars last four hours and every time it runs out, I have trouble explaining to him that he must wait a while before he can play with it again.

So, I will definitely take him to the go-kart track.”

Horloges en autosport zijn onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Wat heb jij met horloges?

“Horloges spelen een belangrijke rol in mijn leven. Tijdens races had ik geen horloges om, alleen een hartslagmeter.

Maar van m’n eerste salaris kocht ik een horloge voor mijn vader om hem te bedanken, een Mille Miglia van Chopard met een rubberen bandje. Dat vond ik een mooie link naar autoraces. Ik vind dat er bij sieraden en horloges voor mannen een verhaal achter moet zitten, dat maakt het bijzonder. Zo kocht ik na mijn eerste IndyCar overwinning een mooie Audemars Piguet. Ik heb geprobeerd om een Rolex Daytona te winnen. Ik lag met Porsche in de leiding, totdat we schade kregen en de race voorbij was. Dus die klok heb ik zelf moeten kopen, haha.”

Je zet je ook in voor het goede doel, zo heb je jouw naam verbonden aan de Robert Doornbos Grandprix in Ahoy.

“2018 was het moeilijkste jaar uit mijn leven. Toen er bij mijn dochter Jada een tumor werd ontdekt, was haar steunen in haar gevecht het enige dat telde. We hebben een heel sterk meisje en ze heeft het overwonnen. Maar er is een hele nieuwe wereld voor me opengegaan.

Er zijn zoveel kleine strijdertjes die samen met hun ouders dag in, dag uit aan het knokken zijn. Dat heeft me enorm geraakt en daar wil ik iets voor terug doen. Ik ben uitgeroepen tot sporticoon van Rotterdam op autosportgebied door de stichting Rotterdamse Sporticonen. De stichting wil een fundraising platform oprichten en kindjes en hun ouders een dag ontzorgen.

Samen bedachten we de Rotterdamse Grandprix, de grootste trapautorace van Nederland, waar kinderen een dag racen op een parcours in Ahoy. Vorig jaar was de eerste editie, toen zaten we nog middenin de strijd met Jada. Het was heftig maar ook een mooie afleiding. Dit jaar waren er 600 kindjes. Het geeft enorm veel voldoening en hoop dat we dit nog vele jaren kunnen organiseren.”

Watches have always been important to motorsport. What kind of watches do you like?

“During races I didn’t wear a watch, I only wore a heart rate monitor. But watches do play an important role in my life.

After my first pay check, I bought a watch for my father to thank him for his support. It was a Mille Miglia by Chopard with a rubber strap, I thought that was a nice link to car racing. I think there should always be a story behind jewellery and watches owned by men, to make it more special. After my first IndyCar victory, I bought a beautiful Audemars Piguet.

I also tried to win a Rolex Daytona. I was in the lead with Porsche until my car got damaged and the race was over.

So, I had to buy that timepiece myself, haha.”

You are also committed to charity and host the Robert Doornbos Grandprix in Ahoy.

“2018 was the most difficult year of my life. When doctors discovered my daughter Jada had a tumour, supporting her in her fight was all that mattered. We have a very strong girl and she recovered. But that difficult time opened up a whole new world for me.

There are so many little warriors and their parents who are fighting the decease.

That really touched me and I wanted to do something in return. I have been named Rotterdam’s sport icon in motorsport by the Rotterdam Sport Icon Foundation.

The foundation wants to set up a fundraising platform for children and their parents to enjoy a fun day together. The foundation and I came up with the Rotterdam Grandprix, the largest pedal car race in the Netherlands, where children race on a racetrack inside Ahoy. The first edition took place last year, when we were still fighting the battle with Jada. It was intense but also a nice distraction. This year, 600 children attended. It’s very satisfying and I hope we can organize this for many years to come ■

VOORWOORD

Lieve lezers, Voor u ligt een zeer feestelijke nieuwe editie van ons magazine, Het is de eerste editie in de nieuwe Man/Vrouw stijl. Ik ben hoofdredacteur van dit deel van het blad en mijn broer David is hoofdredacteur van het andere deel dat u vindt als u het magazine omdraait. Er zijn twee kanten, maar we doen het zij-aan-zij.

Het is bijna tijd voor mijn favoriete periode van het jaar: de winter en de daarbij behorende feestdagen. Alle glitter en glamour mag weer uit de kast worden getrokken. En dat komt uiteraard terug in dit magazine. Zo reisde het GASSAN team af naar Italië voor een glamourous fotoshoot, geheel passend bij dit thema.

Met deze editie luiden we de feestmaand en een feestelijk jubileumjaar in. Volgend jaar bestaat GASSAN maar liefst 75 jaar! Als familie zijn we daar enorm trots op.

Samuel Gassan, de opa van mijn vader, begon 75 jaar geleden zijn zaak op de Nieuwe Achtergracht. Inmiddels is GASSAN een prachtig familiebedrijf met vele mooie vestigingen en een waanzinnige groep trouwe personeelsleden die ook als familie aanvoelt.

Ter ere van het 75-jarig bestaan van GASSAN lanceren we volgend jaar een zeer exclusieve juwelenlijn met onze eigen GASSAN 121 diamant.

En dat brengt ons gelijk bij de volgende feestelijke gelegenheid, want er is volgend jaar nog meer te vieren: onze gepatenteerde slijpvorm GASSAN 121 bestaat 15 jaar.

In 2005 werd de eerste GASSAN 121 geslepen, een diamant met maar liefst 121 facetten.

We rollen van de ene festiviteit in de andere. In het bijzijn van relaties, pers, celebrities en friends of the brand vierden we onlangs in het Aquarium van Artis het 10-jarig jubileum van Choices by DL. Het feest was geheel in de stijl van de nieuwe juwelenlijn Animal and Nature. Caroline Tensen en haar dochter Lotte waren ook aanwezig op deze prachtige avond en we zijn enorm trots dat Caroline tijdens het aankomende seizoen van Eén tegen 100 onze nieuwe creaties zal dragen. Wij namen alvast een kijkje achter de schermen bij de opnames van Eén tegen 100 en interviewden Caroline over haar werk.

Om ons voor te bereiden op de festiviteiten die op de planning staan, willen wij vrouwen niets liever dan weten hoe we ons haar en make-up perfect kunnen verzorgen. Haar- en make-upgoeroe Leco van Zadelhoff vertelt in deze editie wat de trends zijn en hoe we op ons mooist voor de dag komen.

Ook maken we kennis met Robin Singels, een ‘next generation’ online creative. Zij neemt haar volgers mee in haar dagelijks leven. Het is een zeer jong beroep, maar niet meer weg te denken uit het hedendaagse tijdsbeeld. Aan ons de eer om het allereerste interview van Robin af te nemen.

Wij bereiden ons voor op al het moois dat er komen gaat en nodigen u graag uit om dit met ons in een van onze vestigingen te vieren.

Welcome to a very festive new edition of our magazine. It is our first magazine in the new Man/Woman style. I am editor-in-chief of this part of the magazine and my brother David is editor-in-chief of the other part that you will find when you turn the magazine.

There are two sides, but we are working side by side.

My favourite time of the year is almost here: the winter and holidays. It’s time to get ready for glitter and glamour. For this edition of the magazine, the GASSAN team travelled to Italy for a glamorous photo shoot, entirely in line with this theme.

We’re not only getting ready for the holidays, but also for a festive anniversary year. Next year, GASSAN will be celebrating its 75th anniversary! As a family we are very proud.

Samuel Gassan, my father’s grandfather, started his business 75 years ago on the Nieuwe Achtergracht. GASSAN has become a wonderful family business with many beautiful stores and an amazing group of loyal staff members who also feel like family. To mark the 75th anniversary of GASSAN, we are launching a very exclusive jewellery line with our GASSAN 121 diamond next year.

And that brings us to the next festive occasion, because there is even more to celebrate next year: our patented brilliant cut GASSAN 121 has been around for 15 years. In 2005 the first GASSAN 121 was cut, a diamond with 121 facets.

We go from one festivity to another. In the presence of relationships, press, celebrities and friends of the brand, we recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of Choices by DL in the Artis Aquarium. The party was decorated in the style of the new jewellery line Animal and Nature. Caroline Tensen and her daughter Lotte joined us at this wonderful evening and we are extremely proud that Caroline will wear our new creations during the upcoming season of Eén tegen 100. We took a look behind the scenes at a taping of Eén tegen 100 and interviewed Caroline about her work.To prepare for the parties, we want to know how to treat and wear our hair and makeup. We asked hair and makeup guru Leco van Zadelhoff about the trends and how to look our best.

We also talked to Robin Singels, a true ‘next generation’ online creative. She shows her followers around inside her life in Amsterdam. It is a young profession, but getting very popular. It is an honour being the first magazine to interview her.

Caroline Tensen komt ruim dertig jaar vanuit de televisie onze woonkamers binnen. Met programma’s als Eén tegen 100, DNA Onbekend en 5 Days Inside trekt de geliefde presentatrice een miljoenenpubliek. Als ambassadeur van de Nationale Postcode Loterij gebruikt ze haar populariteit om aandacht te vragen voor mensen die het minder goed hebben. Wij vragen haar hoe ze al die tijd aan de top blijft.

Caroline Tensen has been on television for over thirty years.

With TV shows such as Eén tegen 100, DNA Onbekend en 5 Days Inside, the beloved presenter attracts many viewers. As an ambassador for the Nationale Postcode Loterij, she uses her popularity to draw attention to people who are less fortunate. We ask her how she manages to stay at the top.

Dit jaar tekende je bij de zender RTL en je was er ook bij, die eerste uitzenddag, 30 jaar geleden. Hoe is het om terug te zijn?

“Ik ben heel blij om weer terug te zijn. RTL zendt zeven avonden per week uit en ze bepalen zelf wie op welke avond te zien is.

Er zijn korte lijntjes en dat is heel anders dan bij de publieke omroep. Daar zijn zoveel mensen die beslissen wie wat waar gaat doen. Als je daar een idee hebt, moet je heel lang wachten. Ik heb

het goed gehad bij de publieke omroep, maar ik vind het bij RTL nóg leuker. Er heerst een gevoel van saamhorigheid, we doet het echt met elkaar.”

You’re back at RTL. You were there too, when they started broadcasting 30 years ago. What is it like to be back?

“I am very happy to be back. RTL broadcasts seven nights a week and they decide what show will be on television on which evening. It’s very different from the Dutch public broadcaster where there are so many people who have a saying in what show will be broadcasted on which day. I had a great time during my years at the public broadcaster, but I like it even better at RTL. It feels like a family, we really all work together.”

Ik neem voor de opnames de vragen en antwoorden een aantal keer door. Als iemand heel ver is en nog maar een of twee mensen weg hoeft te spelen en bij een antwoord twijfelt tussen B en C en ik weet dat het B is, dan sta ik er echt van: oh please, kies B! Noem het goede antwoord! Ik gun het de kandidaten en word zelfs weleens zenuwachtig. Maar het is een spel. Ik heb de uitkomst niet in de hand.”

What is it like hosting a TV show like Eén tegen 100, with a large audience and tense candidates?

“It’s intense, but also very nice. I always prepare well. I read the questions and answers several times before the taping. If someone is very far along in the game and is competing with only one or two contestants, I get nervous for them. When they are in doubt answering B or C and I know the correct answer is B, I’m thinking and hoping: oh please, choose B! Choose the correct answer! I really hope they would win. But it’s a game. I can’t control the outcome.”

Je bent een stijlicoon en ziet er altijd mooi uit.

“Ik wil er verzorgd uitzien, dat heb ik van huis uit mee gekregen.

Mijn moeder zei altijd: ‘je moet in ieder geval verzorgde en gepoetste schoenen hebben en nette haren’. We waren een heel gemiddeld gezin, maar ik had wel Bally schoenen, van die blauwe leren. Ik geef nog steeds om mooie schoenen en ben erg blij met de sneakers trend, haha. Ik ben 55 jaar, dus ik moet goed kijken wat me staat. Die enorme Balenciaga sneakers zijn geen gezicht bij mij. Maar Tod’s sneakers, een mooie trui en een simpele broek vind ik een erg fijne combinatie.”

You are a style icon and you always look beautiful.

“I want to look well-groomed. My mother always told me ‘you must at least have well-groomed polished shoes and neat hair.’ I’m from an average family, but I did have Bally shoes, those blue leather ones. I still care about nice shoes and I am very happy with the sneakers trend, haha. I’m 55 years old, so I have to check what suits me. Those huge Balenciaga sneakers are not for me. But I think Tod’s sneakers, a nice sweater and comfortable pants are a very nice combination.”

Heb jij inspraak op de looks die je visagist en styllst voor je bedenken?

“Met mijn make-up bemoei ik me niet. Ik zit al 29 jaar bij Leco (van Zadelhoff, red.) in de stoel en m’n haar en make-up zit altijd goed. Fred (van Leer, red.) heeft jarenlang mijn styling gedaan en dat was ook altijd goed. Een look kan me maken of breken. Do you have a say in the looks that your makeup artist and stylist come up with for you?

“I don’t interfere with my makeup. I’ve been in Leco’s (van Zadelhoff, ed.) chair for 29 years and my hair and makeup always look good. Fred (van Leer, ed.) has done my styling for years and that was always great too. A look can make or break me. If Leontine Borsato wears a floral dress with cool boots, that looks fantastic. If you make me wear that flower dress with heels, I will look like a granny. I don’t want that. My outfits must have a raw edge. Fred understood that like no other. When Patty (Zomer, ed.) took over from Fred, she checked my wardrobe to see what I wear privately. Patty elaborates on that and that’s how we kind of do it together. The items she picks out for me are sometimes so nice that I buy them for myself.”

Hoe omschrijf je jouw stijl?

“Ik houd van chic sportief, met mooie basics van merken als Filippa K en 10Days en spijkerbroeken van Closed. Ik wil deze winter zo min mogelijk kopen en heb geïnvesteerd in fijne basics. Ik heb mooie gympen, een paar goede cowboylaarzen, een paar truien van SuperCashmere en drie jurkjes gekocht en daar ga ik het de komende maanden mee doen.”

How do you describe your style?

“I like sporty chic, with nice basics from brands such as Filippa K and 10Days and jeans from Closed. This winter, I want to buy as little as possible and I invested in some basics. I bought nice sneakers, a good pair of cowboy boots, a few SuperCashmere sweaters and three dresses and that’s all I will be wearing, these next months.”

Welke producten zitten er altijd in je handtas?

“Ik heb altijd lipgloss, een fles water en een dagcrème bij me. Ik heb een allergie in mijn gezicht waar ik soms erg last van heb. Als mijn huid droog aanvoelt en jeukt, smeer ik de dagcrème. Als ik uit eten ga, neem ik een lipgloss en de GlowFusion Afterglow bronzer van Leco mee.”

Which products are always in your handbag?

“I always bring lip gloss, a bottle of water and a day cream with me. I have an allergy in my face. If my skin feels dry and itchy, I apply the day cream. When I go out for dinner, I bring a lip gloss and the GlowFusion Afterglow bronzer by Leco.”

Je hebt altijd gewerkt, ook toen jouw kinderen Charlotte en Bob klein waren. Hoe combineerde je jouw werk en thuis?

“Toen Lot heel klein was, bracht ik haar weg. Een vrouw die 4 weken na mij moeder was geworden, bleef thuis bij haar kind en paste op Lot. Maar ik werkte heel onregelmatig en kon niet altijd om zes uur mijn kind ophalen. Kinderen hebben dat ritme wel nodig, ze moeten > GASSAN MAGAZINE

op tijd eten en naar bed. Een oppas aan huis was handiger voor ons. Ik plaatste een advertentie met de tekst ‘Mijn mama werkt voor de televisie. Dat is wel leuk maar erg onregelmatig. Wie wil er op mij passen?’ En toen stond Anki voor de deur, een enorm leuke vrouw die 100 meter verderop woonde. Oma Anki stond altijd voor ons klaar. Toen ze kleinkinderen kreeg en op hen ging passen, stopte ze bij ons. Ik heb twee dagen gehuild, we misten haar heel erg. Na mijn scheiding koos ik voor een au pair en zij werd een echt maatje voor de kinderen.”

You have been making amazing TV shows, even when your children Charlotte and Bob were small. How did you combine your work and home?

“When Lot was very small, a woman who became a mother 4 weeks after me looked after her baby and Lot. But since I worked very irregular hours, I couldn’t always pick up my child at six in the evening. Children need a schedule; they have to eat and go to bed on time. A babysitter at home was more convenient for us. I placed an advertisement with the text ‘My mom works for television. That is nice but very irregular. Who wants to look after me?’ And then Anki came to our door, a very nice woman who lived in our street. Grandma Anki was always there for us. When she had grandchildren and started looking after them, she stopped working for us. I cried for two days, we missed her very much. After my divorce, I chose an au pair and she became a true companion for the children.”

Dat gaf vast rust, als je aan het werk was?

“Ja, ik wist dat het thuis liep. Toen ze op de basisschool zaten, werkte het prima. De lagere school is heel overzichtelijk en veilig, kinderen hebben jarenlang dezelfde vriendjes en je kan met hun ouders afspraken maken. Vaak gaan mensen meer werken als hun kinderen groter zijn. Ik dacht juist altijd: als ze naar de middelbare gaan, wil ik meer thuis zijn. Ze krijgen wisselende roosters, nieuwe vrienden, gaan van alles uitproberen. Dan moet je goed opletten en weten waar ze uithangen. Toen Lot en Bob naar de middelbare gingen, kon ik rekening houden met hun

schema’s en op mijn werk aangeven wanneer ik thuis wilde zijn om zelf een oogje in het zeil te houden.”

That probably gave you peace of mind when you were working?

“Yes, I knew everything was fine at home. When they were in primary school, it worked great. Primary school is very wellorganized and safe, children have the same friends for years and you can arrange playdates with their parents. People often work more when their children are older. I always thought: if they go to high school, I want to be at home more. Their school hours change, they make new friends and try everything. Then you really have to pay attention and know where they are. When Lot and Bob went to high school, I was able to take their schedules into account and tell my colleagues when I wanted to be home to keep an eye on them myself.”

Charlotte en Bob zijn inmiddels uit huis. Hoe is dat?

“Toen Lot uit huis ging, ging ze meteen ontgroenen en was twee weken niet bereikbaar. Dat was heel raar. Toen Bob het huis uitging, ging hij eerst drie maanden naar Amerika voor een uitwisselingsprogramma. Toen hij daar was, heb ik mijn verhuizing in gang gezet. Ik heb altijd gezegd: als mijn kinderen de deur uit zijn, ga ik terug naar Amsterdam. Bussum is superleuk en ik heb er 23 jaar met veel plezier gewoond, maar Amsterdam bruist meer. We genieten enorm van de stad. We gaan regelmatig op de fiets naar musea, de film, het theater en we hebben een sloepje, dat kan in Bussum niet.”

Charlotte and Bob are living on their own. What’s that like?

“When Lot left home, she went into a sorority and we couldn’t communicate for two weeks. That felt very strange. When Bob left the house, he first went to America for an exchange program for three months. When he was there, I started arranging my move.

I always said: when my children are moving out, I will return to Amsterdam. Bussum is great fun and I have lived there with great pleasure for 23 years, but Amsterdam is more vibrant.We really enjoy the city. We regularly cycle to museums, the cinema, the theatre and we have a small boat. You can’t do those things in Bussum.”

Voor de goede doelen van de Nationale Postcode Loterij reis je af naar gebieden waar zij werk verrichten. Dat lijkt me zwaar, zeker als moeder.

“De eerste reis voor de Postcode Loterij was 29 jaar geleden, toen Lot drie maanden oud was. Ik ging naar Brazilië en het was vooral moeilijk omdat ik daar kindjes zag in hele andere omstandigheden. Lot had een mooi kamertje, een comfortabel

For the charities of the Nationale Postcode Loterij you travel to areas where they do good. That must be difficult, especially as a mother.

“The first trip for the Postcode Loterij was 29 years ago, when Lot was three months old. I went to Brazil and it was especially difficult because I saw children there in completely different circumstances. Lot had a nice room, a comfortable bed, toys and the children there had nothing. You can hand in all your stuff, but who do you help with that? You help with doing something.

Doing nothing is not an option.”

Hoe helpen de goede doelen daar?

“Wij laten met ons bezoek zien wat er met het geld van de Postcode Loterij wordt gedaan om de situatie daar te veranderen. Mensen denken dat het snoepreisjes zijn, maar dat zijn het totaal niet. Het is soms echt horror. Je bezoekt de onderkant van de maatschappij en het is zo erg wat je daar ziet, vooral het kinderleed. Je bent kapot van de indrukken, het reizen en slaapt tussen de kakkerlakken. Het maakt mij niet zoveel uit, ik ben een kampeervrouw en neem altijd een slaapzak, kaarsjes en muziek mee om er toch een beetje een thuisgevoel te creëren. Ik vind het vooral heel bijzonder dat ik de situatie daar mag laten zien.”

How do the charities help there?

“With our visits, we show what is being done with the money from the Postcode Loterij to change the situation. People think it’s like a fun field trip, but it’s really not. It can be horrific. You visit the bottom of society and the things you see, are so bad, especially when children are suffering. It’s tough; the impressions, the traveling and you sleep among the cockroaches. The uncomfortable nights don’t matter much to me, I always bring a sleeping bag, candles and music to make sure it feels a little like home. Over all; I think it is very special to show what is being done there.”

Geeft het ook voldoening omdat je ziet wat daar bereikt wordt?

“Ja, mijn moeder zei altijd: ‘je laat in ieder geval zien wat eraan gedaan wordt’. Maar het verschil tussen daar en hier blijft verschrikkelijk. Ik vraag me geregeld af hoe het mogelijk is.

Je ziet het natuurlijk ook in Nederland, hier is ook armoede en dat is vreselijk. Die kinderen hebben er niet om gevraagd.”

Does it feel satisfying to see the achievements?

“Yes, my mother always said: ‘at least you show what is being done about it’. But the difference between the situations over there and here remains terrible. I regularly wonder how it is possible. Of course, you also see it in the Netherlands, there is poverty here as well and that is terrible too. Those children didn’t ask for it.”

Kom je anders terug na een reis?

“Ja, altijd. Maar ik spreek het niet meer uit. Als iemand klaagt dat er iets uitverkocht was bij de Albert Heijn, dan moet ik me inhouden en denk: hoor je wel wat je zegt?

Relativeren doe ik vanbinnen. Die mensen zijn er niet geweest, hebben niet gezien wat ik zag. Ik maak tijdens de reizen ook hele mooie dingen mee. In Nigeria hebben we samen met een Nederlandse jongen zonnepanelen geïnstalleerd. ’s Avonds laat toen het pikkedonker was, sloten we het licht aan. Een meisje van 12 jaar rende heel hard weg en kwam terug met haar leesboekje. Ze ging voor het eerst bij het licht lezen.

Daar moest ik van huilen, ik vond het zo klein en zo mooi.”

Do you come back differently after a trip?

“Yes always. But I don’t try to lecture people. If someone complains about something being sold out at the Albert Heijn, I think to myself: do you even hear what you are saying?

I put things into perspective. Those people have not been there, they have not seen what I saw. I also experience beautiful things during the travels. In Nigeria we installed solar panels.

Late in the evening when it was completely dark, we switched on the light. A 12 year old girl ran away really fast. She came back with her reading book and started reading by the light. It made me cry, I thought it was so small and so beautiful.”

Wat zijn jouw wensen voor de toekomst?

“Ik zou onderdeel willen zijn van een heel groots programma, zoiets als Holland’s Got Talent of The Voice of Holland. Dat lijkt me fantastisch.

Verder ben ik zeven jaar samen met Ernst. We zijn allebei vrij actief en houden van reizen, maar daar is nu te weinig tijd voor. Volgend jaar willen we een mooie reis maken en we zijn al voorzichtig aan het plannen. Het leven bestaat niet alleen uit werken.”

What are your wishes for the future?

“I would like to be a part of a very large TV show, something like Holland’s Got Talent or The Voice of Holland. That would be fantastic. I have been with Ernst for seven years. We are both fairly active and enjoy traveling, but there is not enough time for that now. Next year we want to make a nice trip and we are already planning. Life is not just about work.”

Sieraad als statussymbool Sieraden winnen steeds meer aan populariteit. Juwelen zijn vooral een teken van rijkdom, macht en welvaart, alleen de rijken en elite hebben ze en dat maakt ze meer en meer gewild. In het Oude Griekenland - rond 1400 voor Christus - zijn sieraden ook een heus statussymbool. De gouden juwelen ingelegd met edelstenen worden niet dagelijks gebruikt, maar alleen bij speciale gelegenheden. Hoewel nog steeds zeldzaam en kostbaar worden sieraden ook steeds meer gedragen en zijn ze niet meer alleen bestemd voor belangrijke gebeurtenissen.

Leco is al jarenlang de vaste visagist en hairstylist van tout bekend Nederland.

Hij voorziet Caroline Tensen, Leontine Borsato, Chantal Janzen en vele andere beroemde beauty’s van de mooiste looks. Maar hij doet meer. Als lifestyledeskundige bij RTL Boulevard vertelt hij over de laatste trends, hij heeft z’n online Lecostore met verzorgingsproducten, werkt aan editorials voor magazines en is beauty-editor voor het magazine en platform &C . Ook wij maken graag gebruik van Leco’s expertise en vroegen hem naar zijn tips voor komend seizoen.

Die samenwerking verloopt erg goed. Je staat al jaren aan de top, hoe verklaar je jouw succes?

“Als je begint, heb je een klein beetje ervaring en als je zoals ik al 30 jaar in het vak zit, heb je een hele rugzak ervaring. Het is heel belangrijk dat je gebruik maakt van die bagage, maar nooit koketteert met het verleden. Ik geloof dat je zo goed bent als je laatste lipglossje en ik teer niet op wat ik twintig jaar geleden gemaakt heb, zo werkt het niet. Je moet juist altijd bezig zijn met vandaag en morgen en vooruit durven kijken.”

Leco van Zadelhoff has been the go-to make-up artist and hairstylist for all famous and glamourous Dutch ladies. Caroline Tensen, Leontine Borsato and Chantal Janzen are just a few of the many famous beauties who trust him with their looks. But that’s not all Leco does. As a lifestyle expert at RTL Boulevard, he talks about the latest trends, he has his online Lecostore with cosmetic products, works on advertorials for magazines and is a beauty editor for the magazine and platform &C. We also like to take advantage of Leco’s expertise and asked him about his tips for the coming season.

That collaboration turned out great. You have been at the top for years. How do you explain your success?

“When you start, you have little experience and if you have been in the business for 30 years like I have, you know from experience how it’s done. It is very important that you use that baggage, but never boast about the past. I believe that you are as good as your last lip gloss and I don’t brag about things I did 20 years ago; it doesn’t work that way. You must always focus on today and tomorrow and dare to look ahead.”

Je werkt als hairstylist, visagist en stylecoach, bent lifestyledeskundige bij RTL Boulevard en je hebt eigen make-upproducten. Hoe combineer je alles?

“Ik heb een hele goede manager, dat klinkt misschien heel gewichtig, maar in mijn geval is dat iemand die ervoor zorgt dat alles blijft draaien. Ik ben goed in haar en make-up, met ermee bezig zijn en erover praten. Ik werk hard en maak veel uren. Maar ik heb op de achtergrond iemand nodig die zorgt dat alles vloeiend loopt. Iemand die m’n agenda beheert en de administratie doet. Zodat ik me alleen bezig hoef te houden met waar ik goed in ben, het uitoefenen van m’n vak.”

Hoe ben je hier terechtgekomen?

“Op mijn zevende wilde ik al kapper worden en op mijn elfde hield ik voor het eerst een schaar in m’n hand. Toen ik veertien was, knipte ik de hele buurt en op m’n zestiende had ik vaste klanten in de plaatselijke kapsalon. Ik was erg gefocust, maar ook snel uitgekeken op dingen. Op m’n achttiende vroeg ik me af of dit echt was wat ik wilde. Mijn ouders zeiden: ‘je hebt geen verplichtingen, geen hypotheek, dus ga ervoor’. Ik sprong in het diepe ben gaan lesgeven op de make-upacademie in Amsterdam. Daar leerde ik spelenderwijs over make-up en ontdekte er mijn passie; die total look maken. Ik heb altijd keihard gewerkt - ik maak zo’n zeventig tot tachtig uur per week - maar vind het heerlijk. Ik geloof dat als je iets met passie doet, je er heel veel voor terugkrijgt en dan is hard werken het leukste dat er is. Mijn vader is 75 en die werkt nog steeds. Dat is mijn voorbeeld, uit zo’n nest kom ik. Ik hoop dat ik ooit neerval met een stijltang in m’n hand. Niet tegen het gezicht van iemand, haha. Maar zonder grap; ik hoop in het harnas te sterven.”

You are a hairstylist, make-up artist, style coach, a lifestyle expert at RTL Boulevard and you have your own range of makeup products. How do you combine everything?

“I have a very good manager who makes sure that everything goes smoothly. I’m good at hair and makeup and talking about it. I work hard and work many hours.

But I need someone behind the scenes who makes sure everything runs smoothly.

Someone who manages my agenda and does the administration. So that I only have to worry about what I’m good at; practicing my profession.”

How did you end up here?

“When I was seven years old, I wanted to become a hairdresser and at the age of GASSAN MAGAZINE

eleven I held scissors in my hand for the first time. When I was fourteen, I cut the entire neighbourhood and at sixteen I had regular customers in the local hair salon. I was very focused, but also quickly bored with things. At the age of eighteen I wondered if this was really what I wanted to do. My parents told me: ‘you have no obligations and no mortgage, so go for it’. I started teaching at the makeup academy in Amsterdam and learned about makeup in a playful way. I discovered my passion; creating a total look. I have always worked very hard - I work about seventy to eighty hours a week - but I love it. I believe that if you do something with passion, you get a lot in return. My father is 75 years old and he is still working. That’s the kind of background I’m from. I hope to go on as long as possible and to drop dead with a straightener in my hand, haha.”

Hoe raak jij geïnspireerd?

“Ik doe altijd en overal inspiratie op en ben constant bezig om upto-date blijven. Als ik vrij ben, duik ik het net op. Voor de komst van social media ging ik naar de catwalkshows in Parijs en vertelde mijn klanten wat de trends zouden worden. Nu kan je alles online vinden.

Je moet als kapper en visagist heel erg op de hoogte zijn van alles, anders haalt de klant je in. Het werkt niet als jouw klant vraagt om een look die gisteren op de catwalk in Parijs is geshowd en jij geen idee hebt waar het over gaat.”

How do you get inspired?

“I am inspired by everything around me and I am constantly trying to stay up-to-date. When I am not working, I go online. Before social media, I would go to the catwalk shows in Paris and tell my customers what the trends would be. Now you can find everything online. As a hairdresser and make-up artist you have to be very up-to-date about everything, otherwise the customer will catch up with you. If your client asks for a look that was shown on the catwalk in Paris the day before and you have no idea what it’s about, you’re done.”

Hoe vertaal jij de trends naar degene in de stoel?

“Door mijn ervaring weet ik trends te vertalen naar een look, maar je moet niet alleen klakkeloos volgen wat er in de mode is. Ik kijk vooral naar wat de persoon staat, het moet diegene wel knapper maken, want de spiegel liegt nooit.”

How do you translate trends to the person in the chair?

“Because of my experience, I know how to translate trends into a look, but you don’t just have to follow what is fashionable. I mainly look at the person in the chair, it must always improve that person’s features.

The mirror never lies.”

Moet jij een klik hebben met de persoon in je stoel?

“Je moet deskundig en ervaringsdeskundige zijn, verstand hebben van beauty en mode, maar je moet ook wat met mensen hebben. Je maakt GASSAN MAGAZINE

geen pop op, je bent niet aan het schilderen op een doek. Het persoonlijke is minstens zo belangrijk als dat je weet hoe je een eyeliner aanbrengt. Je moet een band opbouwen met de persoon in de stoel, diegene moet zich prettig voelen.

Het gesprek dat je samen hebt, is eigenlijk belangrijker dan de crème die ik opsmeer, want uitstraling zit niet in een potje, die komt van binnenuit. Als het met die uitstraling goed zit, heb ik minder make-up nodig om iemand te laten stralen.”

Do you need to click with the person in your chair?

“You have to be an experienced expert, must understand beauty and fashion, but you also have to be a people’s person. You don’t have a doll in your chair, you’re not painting on a canvas. The personal touch is at least as important as knowing how to apply an eyeliner. You have to build a bond with the person in the chair, that person must feel comfortable. The conversation we have is actually more important than the cream I put on, because radiance doesn’t come from a jar, it comes from within. If that inner beauty look is good, I need less makeup to make someone glow.”

Veel vrouwen voor wie jij de make-up en haar doet, zijn vriendinnen geworden. Hoe komt dat?

“Er wordt altijd gezegd dat je je werk en privé gescheiden moet houden. Nou dat doe ik niet. Ik geef een stuk van mezelf aan iemand en krijg van hen een stuk terug. Het is echt samenwerken. Ik vind het juist heel leuk om die klik in privésfeer voort te zetten.”

Many of your clients have become friends. How did that happen?

“People always say you have to keep work and your private life separate. Well I don’t. I give someone a piece of myself and they give me a piece of themselves in return. When we have good chemistry we become friends, also after work hours.”

Je hebt een oog voor trends. De Leco-look en de kapsels die jij bedacht voor Caroline Tensen en Leontine Borsato werden grote hits en veel gekopieerd.

“Dat heeft ten eerste met de personen zelf te maken. Caroline en Leontine spreken veel vrouwen aan. Het zijn mensen zoals jij en ik, die laten zien dat je met mooi haar, make-up en kleding je het beste uit jezelf kan halen. Het is realistisch, haalbaar, sexy en dat triggert. Het begon toen Caroline van een bruine bob naar een kort blond koppie ging. In de rij bij de supermarkt vroegen mensen me hoe ik dat had gedaan. Dat vind ik zo leuk aan Instagram en social media nu. Ik krijg veel reacties over bijvoorbeeld welke kleur lipstick of haarkleuring ik gebruikt hebt en die vragen beantwoord ik graag. Ik bouw zo echt een band op met mijn volgers.”

You have an eye for trends. The Leco look and the hairstyles you came up with for Caroline Tensen and Leontine Borsato were big hits and copied a lot.

“First of all, that has to do with those two women. Caroline and Leontine appeal to many. They are people like you and me who show that you can be the best you with beautiful hair, makeup and clothing. It is realistic, achievable, sexy and that triggers. It started when Caroline went from a brown bob to a short blond cut. In the queue at the supermarket people asked me how I had done that. That’s what I

love about Instagram and social media nowadays. I get asked a lot about which colour lipstick or hair colouring I used and I can answer those questions immediately. It’s a great way to connect with my followers.”

Houd jij je social media zelf bij?

“Ik beheer mijn Instagram en Facebook zelf en reageer ook op privéberichten. Het is heel erg onbedacht en puur. Er wordt me ook weleens om advies gevraagd, dan vraag ik of ze een foto kunnen sturen en dan geef ik advies wat goed zou staan. Door social media leer ik m’n doelgroep nog beter kennen en zie waar zij behoefte aan hebben, erg leuk.”

Do you manage your social media yourself?

“I do and I also respond to private messages. It is very pure. Sometimes people ask me advice, I’ll ask them to send a photo and tell them what I think. Through social media I get to know my target group even better and see what they need, which is great fun.”

Ook privé geef je vaak advies.

“Ja dat ongevraagde advies probeer ik af te leren. Dat moet ik eigenlijk niet doen.”

You also often advice friends.

“Yes, I’m trying to stop giving unsolicited advice. I really shouldn’t do that.”

Ik vind dat juist altijd leuk van je.

“Nou, het verdient niet altijd een schoonheidsprijs. Als jongetje deed ik dat al. In groep 3 had ik een hele leuke juf, maar ik vond haar haar niet mooi en vroeg: ‘maar juf, ga je dan nooit naar de kapper?’ M’n moeder stond ernaast met rode konen. Nu probeer ik alleen advies te geven als iemand erom vraagt.”

I like that about you.

“Well, it doesn’t always win a beauty prize. As a boy I already did it. In group 3 I had a very nice teacher, but I did not like her hair and asked: “But teacher, do you never go to the hairdresser?” My mother was standing next to me, turning red in embarrassment. Now I only try to give advice if someone asks for it.”

Welke cosmeticaproducten gebruik jijzelf?

“Ik draag altijd parfum. Ik ben net een oude gifmenger, ik spuit nooit één geur, maar ik vermeng van alles.

Vanwege allergieën heb ik van nature een gevoelige en rode huid en ik gebruik elke ochtend een ontzettend fijn anti redness serum van Medik8. En als ik er ’s ochtends uitzie alsof ik ónder het bed heb gelegen, gebruik ik een bronzer.”

What beauty products do you use yourself?

“I always wear perfume. I am like an old poison mixer, I never spray one fragrance, but I mix everything together. Due to allergies, I have sensitive and red skin and I use a very nice anti-redness serum from Medik8 every morning. If I wake up looking as if I have been lying under the bed, I use a bronzer.”

De winter staat voor de deur. Wat worden volgens jou de trends op mode- en sieradengebied?

“We zitten momenteel in een heel experimentele fase. Er zijn invloeden uit de jaren zeventig, tachtig en negentig en ook de supermodel-tijd en sexiness is heel belangrijk. Dat zie je ook in sieraden. Het hele understated is een beetje over, sieraden mogen echte statement pieces zijn. Waar ik zelf heel blij mee ben, is de terugkeer van big earrings. Dat vind ik super staan bij kort haar. En heel leuk: de broche komt weer terug. Het genderblenden is een beetje over. De mannenmode is weer heel mannelijk en vrouwen spelen weer met vrouwelijkheid. Sieraden kunnen daar een heel belangrijke rol in spelen.”

Winter is around the corner. What do you think will be the trends in fashion and jewellery?

“We are currently in a very experimental phase. There are influences from the seventies, eighties, nineties and also the super model age. Sexiness is very important. You also see that in jewellery. The understated wave is a bit over, statement pieces are in. I am very happy with the return of big earrings; I think it looks super with short hair. And I also love the return of the brooch. Gender blending is also in the past. Men’s fashion is very masculine and women play with femininity again. Jewellery will play a very important role in this too.”

Wat zijn jouw favoriete items?

“Ik ben een Rolex-liefhebber, ik vind ze heel sexy en mooi. Hoe knap is een man met een zwart T-shirtje, zwart Italiaans jasje, goede jeans, een paar instappertjes en een goede klok? Wat mij betreft dragen mannen alleen een klok. Punt. That’s it. Ik heb een dun verlovingsringetje, dat vind ik ook mooi. Maar een man met GASSAN MAGAZINE

zo’n bonk om zijn vinger of een Ibiza-opsomming van armbandjes, vind ik niks. Dat is echt geweest. Voor mannen houd ik van classy accessoires. Vrouwen kunnen meer experimenteren, al moeten ze oppassen. Als ze grote oorbellen, een grote ketting, grote armbanden én grote ringen dragen, dan lijken ze al snel op een kerstboom. Ik hou meer van een enkele statement piece. En al mijn vriendinnen gaan nu vast boos worden, maar ik vind de earparty-trend heel lastig; vrouwen die hun oren volschieten alsof ze masai-krijgers zijn. Asymmetrie vind ik wel heel interessant, dus een grote oorbel in het ene oor en in het andere een subtiele hanger.”

What are your favourite items?

“I am a fan of Rolex watches; I think they are very sexy and beautiful. How handsome is a man with a black T-shirt, black Italian jacket, good jeans, a few slip-on shoes and a nice timepiece?

As far as I’m concerned, men should not wear jewellery, just a watch. That’s it. I have a thin engagement ring, which I also like.

But I don’t like a man with big rings on his fingers or many Ibiza inspired bracelets. For men I like classy accessories. Women can experiment more, although they have to be careful. If they wear large earrings, a large necklace, large bracelets and large rings, they will look like a Christmas tree. I prefer a single statement piece.

My girlfriends will probably get angry for me saying this, but I’m not a fan of the ear party trend; women who pierce their ears as if they are Masai warriors. I do have a thing for asymmetry: a large earring in one ear and a subtle pendant in the other.”

“Ik vind het fantastisch om met filmpjes mijn deskundigheid te delen met anderen. Mijn vader is leraar, ik denk dat ik die passie van hem heb. Het is vooral erg leuk als mensen er wat van opsteken en gaan experimenten. Mijn webshop startte ik omdat ik wel met producten werk, maar geen salon heb. Ik krijg veel vragen over welke producten ik gebruik, nu kan ik die mensen doorverwijzen naar m’n online Lecostore.”

You keep renewing yourself. You create online tutorials and you have a web shop for hair products.

“I love to share my expertise with others through videos. My father

is a teacher, I think I inherited his passion. It is especially nice when people learn something from it and start experimenting. I started my web shop because I work with products, but don’t have a salon.

I get a lot of questions about which products I use, now I can refer those people to my online Lecostore.”

Wat is voor jou het leukste aan je vak?

“De diversiteit. Ik ben een opgewonden standje; onrustig en druk.

Ik vind het heerlijk dat geen week voor mij hetzelfde is. Het ene moment sta in de studio achter de schermen om iemand mooi te maken, het andere moment sta ik achter de desk bij Boulevard en de volgende dag geef ik een interview of heb ik een meeting over m’n producten. Die afwisseling is perfect voor mij.”

What is the best thing about your job?

“The diversity. I am restless and busy. I love that no week is the same. One moment I am behind the scenes in the studio glamming the host of a show, the next I will be behind the desk at Boulevard and the day after I’ll give an interview or have a meeting about my products. That variety is perfect for me.”

Wat kunnen we in de toekomst van jou verwachten?

“Het pad dat ik nu bewandel, wil ik blijven volgen. Ik wil nog meer tutorials maken en op tv, in bladen en online m’n expertise tonen.

Dat adviseren vind ik fantastisch. Mensen zoals bijvoorbeeld de booming ageless generation laten zien hoe ze het mooiste uit zichzelf kunnen halen.”

What can we expect from you in the future?

“I want to continue to follow the path that I am on right now. I want to make more tutorials and show my expertise on TV, in magazines and online. Advising people is fantastic, I love showing people such as the booming ageless generation how they can look their best.”

Wat is het beste carrière-advies?

“Het lijkt me afschuwelijk om met tegenzin naar je werk te gaan, dus pluk de dag en doe iets wat je echt leuk vindt. Het is een dooddoener en soms makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan, maar geld verdienen is één ding. Als je in een cirkel van stress komt omdat je weinig thuis bent en geen geluk vindt in je baan, volg je passie.

Misschien verdien je minder geld, maar als je geld inlevert en wel fluitend naar je werk gaat en weer fluitend terug naar huis gaat, is dat zoveel waard.”

What is the best career advice?

“To me, it would be horrible to have a job you don’t like. So, do something that you really enjoy. It is easier said than done, but earning money is one thing. If you get into a circle of stress because you are not home at all and cannot find happiness in your job, try to follow your passion. You may earn less money, but if you hand in money and go to work happy and return home whistling, that is worth so much more.”

Leco’s beautytips Oogcrème mee in de toilettas “De huid onder de ogen wordt vaak droog, zeker als je concealer gebruikt. Breng gedurende de dag een klein beetje (niet te vettige) oogcrème aan zodat de huid er smooth uit blijft zien.”

Bring eye cream with you “The skin under the eyes often gets dry, especially if you use concealer.

Re-apply a small amount of (not too greasy) eye cream during the day to keep the skin looking smooth.”

Gebruik een water- of fixspray “De make-up die je om 8 uur ’s ochtends aanbrengt, zit om 8 uur ’s avonds echt niet meer goed. In de fifties gingen vrouwen elk half uur naar de powder room om hun make-up bij te werken. Ik raad aan om elke twee uur een blik in de spiegel te werpen en je huid te hydrateren met een fix- of waterspray.”

Use a water or fix spray “The makeup you apply at 8 o’clock in the morning doesn’t still look good at 8 o’clock at night. In the fifties, women went to the powder room every 30 minutes to check their makeup. I recommend taking a look in the mirror every two hours and hydrating your skin with a fix or water spray.”

Koud water “We hebben dan wel 8 uur slaap nodig, maar je knapt er niet van op. Zit het kussen ‘s ochtends nog in je gezicht en zie je eruit als een verkreukelde krant? Het enige dat helpt om te depuffen is koud water. Sterker nog, ik doe zelf weleens wat ijsklonten in een handdoek en hang met m’n gezicht op z’n kop in de handdoek. Ik heb ook een ijsmasker dat je in de koelkast legt en op je ogen legt om ze minder puffy te krijgen.”

Cold water “We might need 8 hours of sleep, but it doesn’t do much for your appearance in the morning. Is the pillow still in your face when you wake up and do you look like a crumpled newspaper? The only thing that helps to depuff is cold water. In fact, I sometimes put some ice lumps in a towel and hang my face upside down into the towel. I also have an ice mask that makes your eyes less puffy.”

Smeer SPF “Je kan al het geld uitgeven aan dure crèmes, maar als je je huid niet beschermt tegen de zon kan je het net zo goed weggooien. Breng na je dagverzorging een product met SPF aan en ga daarna aan de slag met je make-up. Gebruik het elke dag, ook als het regent en vergeet de hals, decolleté en handen niet. Ga je op vakantie naar de zon?

Vergeet je haar niet te beschermen tegen de uv-straling.”

Use sunscreen “You can spend all the money in the world on expensive creams, but if you don’t protect your skin against the sun, you might as well throw it all away. Apply a product with SPF after your day care and then start applying your makeup. Use it every day, even when it rains and don’t forget the neck, neckline and hands. Are you going on a holiday? Don’t forget to protect your hair against UV radiation too.”

Perfecte finish van de huid “De huid is dit seizoen heel belangrijk. We willen een egale, transparante maar naturel finish. Egaliseer de huid, maar met een niet al te dekkend product. Houd het zo natuurlijk mogelijk, want niemand wordt mooier van een dikke laag make-up. Een frisse glow is de trend van dit moment.”

Perfect skin finish “Skin is very important this season. We want a smooth, transparent but natural finish. Smooth-out the skin, but with a product that is not too covering. Keep it as natural as possible, A thick layer of makeup is not a good look. A fresh glow is the trend at the moment.”

Omlijsting van je gezicht “Wenkbrauwen zijn nog steeds heel belangrijk, ze zijn de omlijsting van een gezicht. Maar de tijd van tandenborstels boven je ogen is verleden tijd, ze zijn nu vol maar genuanceerd, Als je een overhangend ooglid hebt, kan een geëpileerde wenkbrauw wonderen verrichten.”

Frame your face “Eyebrows are still very important. They are the frame of a face.

But big bushy brows are a thing of the past, brows are now full but nuanced. If you have an overhanging eyelid, an epilated eyebrow can work wonders.”

Comeback van oogschaduw en rouge “De invloed van de jaren zeventig, tachtig en negentig zien we terug in het gebruik van oogschaduw en rouge. Rouge was jarenlang uit de mode, maar het wint het binnenkort van bronzer. Elk gerenommeerd merk komt tegenwoordig met een lekkere rouge.

Lippen worden ook steeds belangrijker. En dan vooral producten met een creamy sheer finish.”

Comeback of eye shadow and blusher “The influence of the seventies, eighties and nineties is reflected in the use of eye shadow and blusher. Rouge was out of fashion for years, but it will soon make a comeback. Every renowned brand is launching a nice rouge. Lips are also becoming more and more important, especially products with a creamy sheer finish.”

Om 10 jaar Choices by DL te vieren werd er een pop-up store geopend op Schiphol. De tijdelijke winkel, ingericht als een reuze juwelenkist vol grote Choices by DL ringen, was de gehele maand september geopend achter de securitycontrole in Lounge 1 op de luchthaven. Het decor van de pop-up store was een knipoog naar het concept van het merk; ‘a jewellery wardrobe in a box’.

“GASSAN heeft zowel voor als achter de securitycontrole winkels op Amsterdam Schiphol Airport die Choices by DL verkopen, maar ik vond het tijd om nog meer aanwezig te zijn op de luchthaven, zodat het merk zichtbaar is voor een grote doelgroep”, aldus een enthousiaste Debora. “In de belevingseconomie waarin we nu leven willen mensen worden verrast. Tijdelijke winkels in de vorm van een pop-up voegen naar mijn mening frisheid, exclusiviteit en inspiratie toe. Dat probeer ik ook in mijn pop-up store te bewerkstelligen.”

The temporary store, decorated as a giant jewellery box full of large Choices by DL rings, was housed after the security check in Lounge 1. The decor of the pop-up store was a nod to the brand concept; ‘A jewellery wardrobe in a box’. “GASSAN has stores that sell Choices by DL in front of and behind the security checkpoints at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, but I thought it was time to be even more present at the airport. With the pop-up store the brand was visible to a large target group,” said an enthusiastic Debora. “We now live in an experience economy; people want to be surprised. In my opinion, temporary shops like pop-up stores add freshness, exclusivity and inspiration.”

Tijdens het ontwikkelen zijn verschillende consumenten geïnterviewd om de ultieme ervaring te ontwerpen die zo goed mogelijk aansluit bij de behoefte van de consument. Zo is er een nieuwe configurator. “Hier kun je alle combinaties zien en uitproberen. Het mixen en matchen komt hierdoor echt tot leven. Het is als het ware spelen met LEGO voor de volwassen vrouw”, vertelt Debora Huisman-Leeser. Bij het Shop the Look onderdeel kan de consument direct zien welke items er op de foto worden gedragen. Ook is de site volledig responsive en via het swipe mechanisme makkelijk te gebruiken op mobiele devices.

During the development, several consumers were interviewed to design the ultimate experience that best meets the needs of the consumer. For example, there is a new configurator. “Here you can see and try all combinations. Mixing and matching really comes to life. It is like playing with LEGO for adult women,” says Debora Huisman-Leeser. With the Shop the Look feature, the consumer can immediately see which items are being worn in the photo.

The site is also fully responsive and easy to use on mobile devices because of the swipe mechanism.

The official celebration of the 10th anniversary of Choices by DL took place on 9 September. The milestone was celebrated in a fantastic location, the underwater world of the Artis Aquarium. Together with business relationships, press, celebrities and friends of the brand, Choices by DL celebrated its highlights of ten years and a spectacular new collection was presented, the Nature and Animal Line. The designs of the Nature and Animal Collection are inspired by nature. Wanneer besloot je om je social media professioneler aan te pakken en je geld te verdienen als online creator?

“Zo’n drie jaar geleden begon het als een hobby. Naarmate mijn volgersaantal groeide, besloot ik het serieuzer aan te pakken en na te denken over de manier waarop ik social media gebruik; het type content dat ik maak en hoe ik me profileer. Sinds anderhalf jaar ben ik hier fulltime mee bezig. Van het plannen en organiseren, tot wekelijkse content schieten en het aangaan van langetermijnprojecten en samenwerkingen.”

You have over 62,000 followers on Instagram and nearly 7,000 YouTube subscribers.

When did you decide to turn your social media presence into a career?

“My social media account started as a hobby three years ago. As my following grew, I decided to take it more seriously and think about how to use it; the type of content I create and how I profile myself. I have been working as a full-time online creative for a year and a half. From planning and organizing, to shooting content and creating long-term projects and collaborations.”

Begin dit jaar ben je begonnen met vloggen. Waarom besloot je hiermee te starten?

“Op Instagram kan je alleen een foto en een korte tekst delen, in m’n video’s kan ik mijn persoonlijkheid en mijn leven laten zien. Meer dan alleen het perfecte plaatje. Volgers leren mij beter kennen en krijgen een kijkje achter de schermen.”

At the beginning of this year you started vlogging. Why did you start vlogging?

“On Instagram you can only share a photo and a short text, in my videos I can show my personality and my life. It’s much more than just the perfect picture. Followers get to know me better and get to take a glimpse behind the scenes.”

Je laat een groot deel van je leven zien. Hoe werd er door je omgeving gereageerd toen je begon met filmen?

“Mijn familie en vrienden hebben me er nog net niet toe gedwongen. Een paar jaar geleden zei iedereen al: ‘Rob jij moet gaan vloggen, dat is echt iets voor jou’. Zij stimuleerden mij enorm en met hun steun ben ik het avontuur aangegaan. De mensen die dichtbij mij staan, vinden het alleen maar leuk, maar ik houd wel rekening met hun privacy.”

You show a large part of your life. How did the people around you react when you started filming?

“Actually, my family and friends kind of talked me into it. For years they kept saying: ‘Rob you have to start vlogging, it would really suit you’. They stimulated and supported me. The people who are closest to me don’t mind me filming us, but I do keep their privacy in mind.”

Hoe waren die eerste keren met de camera?

“Ik vond het doodeng en nog steeds soms. Als ik op straat loop of als ik nieuwe mensen leer kennen, dan durf ik nog steeds niet altijd mijn camera erbij te pakken. Niet omdat ik me schaam, maar omdat mensen naar je gaan kijken en daar word ik ongemakkelijk van. Vloggen is een nog best onbekend fenomeen waardoor al snel alle ogen op jou gericht zijn.

Misschien zijn we het over 10 jaar zo gewend dat niemand meer omkijkt.”

How were those first times with the camera?

“I thought it was scary and it still is sometimes. When I’m outside or when I meet new people, I still don’t always grab my camera. Not because I’m embarrassed, but because I know people are going to watch and that makes me uncomfortable. Vlogging is still a new and kind of unknown phenomenon, which means that all eyes quickly focus on you. Maybe in 10 years it will be so common, that nobody will pay attention when you grab your camera.”

Hoewel je nog niet zo lang vlogt, worden je video’s al erg goed bekeken.

Hoe verklaar je het succes?

“Ik sta niet stil bij het aantal abonnees maar wel bij het aantal views. Op dit moment zit ik op gemiddeld 10.000 tot 20.000 views per video. Ik denk dat het vooral komt doordat ik al een following heb op Instagram, die nu ook meekijkt op YouTube. Ik probeer dicht bij mezelf te blijven en hele rauwe en echte beelden te laten zien. What you see is what you get. Het is écht een kijkje in mijn leven. Volgers vinden dat leuk en blijven daardoor iedere week weer kijken.”

Although you’ve only started vlogging a few months ago, a lot of people already watch your videos. How do you explain the success?

“I don’t pay attention to the number of subscribers, but I do look at the number of views. At the moment I have an average of 10,000 to 20,000 views per video. I think it is mainly because I already have a following on

Instagram and those followers are also watching the videos on YouTube. I try to stay close to myself and show very raw and real images. What you see is what you get, it really is a glimpse into my life. Followers appreciate that and keep watching every week.”

Hoe ziet een gemiddelde dag van jou eruit?

“Ik word elke dag rond een uurtje of 9 wakker. Ik ga meestal eerst sporten en daarna ontbijt ik en drink een kopje koffie. Door te beginnen met sporten, start ik mijn dag gelijk goed en zit ik lekker in mijn vel.

Daarna heb ik een dag op kantoor waarbij ik de week plan en organiseer of ik heb een creatieve dag waarop ik alle content maak en beelden schiet. Mijn camera heb ik altijd bij me. Iedere dag is anders, zo staan er de ene dag meerdere events op de planning en heb ik de volgende dag allemaal meetings. Vaste tijden heb ik niet, want als online creator ben je 24/7 online. Voor de buitenwereld lijkt het misschien alsof ik elke dag alleen maar een beetje aan het lunchen ben, maar zij zien niet dat ik voor, tijdens of na de lunch meetings heb en die lunch onder mijn werkuren valt.”

What does your average day look like?

“I usually wake up around 9, work out and then have breakfast and drink a cup of coffee. Starting the day with a workout makes me feel good about myself. I’ll have a day at the office where I plan the week and organize or I’ll have a creative day where I create all the content and shoot images. I always have my camera with me. Every day is different: one day could be filled with events while the next one I could have meetings planned for a few hours straight. I don’t have fixed times, because as an online creator I have to be online 24/7. To the outside world it may seem like all I do is have lunch every day, but they don’t see that I have meetings before, during or after and that lunch is actually work for me.”

Welke trends voorspel jij voor deze winter?

“De kleur wit wordt een grote trend en ik denk dat we veel oversized truien met hoge boots gaan zien. Ik draag zelf steeds vaker gouden sieraden en ik denk dat geelgoud een grote opmars maakt. Ik geloof dat alles kan en dat iedereen vooral gaat dragen wat ze zelf mooi vinden. We gaan meer ‘all the way’ dan voorheen, zo zie je steeds meer opvallende sieraden, zoals grote ringen.”

What trends do you predict for this winter?

“The colour white will be a big trend and I think we will see a lot of oversized sweaters with high boots. I mostly wear gold jewellery and I think yellow gold is making a big comeback. I believe that anything is possible and that everyone will and should wear what they find beautiful.

We tend to go ‘all the way’ these next months and statement jewellery, such as large rings, will be a huge trend.”

“Merken als Isabel Marant, Maje en Ba&sh vind ik heel fijn.

Vanwege de kwaliteit, het design maar ook omdat het goed te combineren is. Ook slaag ik altijd bij Zara en Topshop. Met de duurdere items doe ik lang, het zijn de tijdloze klassiekers in mijn kast.”

What are your favourite brands?

“I really like brands such as Isabel Marant, Maje and Ba&sh.

Because of the quality, the design but also because it is easy to combine. I also always find beautiful things at Zara and Topshop.

The more expensive items are the timeless classics in my closet.”

Zijn er sieraden die veel voor je betekenen?

“Ik heb een Cartier armband gekregen van mijn oma en opa voor mijn achttiende verjaardag. Deze armband staat voor liefde en ik vind het zo mooi dat ik deze van hen heb gekregen. Ik zal hem de rest van m’n leven dragen.”

Do you own a piece of jewellery that means a lot to you?

“My grandmother and grandfather gave me a Cartier bracelet for my eighteenth birthday. This bracelet stands for love and I think it is so beautiful that they gave it to me. I will wear it for the rest of my life.”

Wat wil jij ooit in je juwelenkistje hebben?

“Haha, zoveel! En uiteindelijk wil ik graag een trouwring hebben.

Al zou die niet in mijn juwelenkistje liggen, die heb ik dan hopelijk gewoon om.”

What’s on your jewellery box wishlist?

“Haha, so many things! And in the end, I would like to have a wedding ring. Well, actually I don’t want it in my jewellery box, I will hopefully just wear it.”

“Ik ben bezig met verschillende projecten, maar die staan nog in de kinderschoenen, dus daar kan ik nog niet veel over vertellen.

What can we expect from you, these next months?

“I am working on various projects, but it’s work in progress, so I cannot tell much about that yet.

I am an entrepreneur and I love the freedom that comes with it. I can do all the things I enjoy. I think about my future a lot. I would love to have a clothing line or an accessory collection with, for example, phone cases.”

Wat is jouw toekomstdroom?

“Ik wil creatief bezig blijven en in de toekomst mijn eigen producten uitbrengen. Ook is het mijn droom om een groot gezin te hebben. Het lijkt me heel gezellig om als gezin leuke herinneren te maken en veel van de wereld te kunnen zien. Ook is het mijn doel om niet te vergeten om een beetje uit m’n comfort zone te gaan. Je leeft maar één keer en ik merk dat heel veel mensen leven volgens de regels. Ik betrap mezelf er soms ook op, maar je moet proberen zoveel mogelijk te genieten en doen wat je echt gelukkig maakt. Als klein meisje was het mijn droom om later in een film te spelen of presentatrice te worden. Als dat op me pad zou komen, zou ik dat heel erg leuk vinden.”

What are your dreams for the future?

“I want to stay creative and launch my own products. It is also my dream to have a large family.

It would be so nice to travel all around the world and make memories as a family. It is also my goal to not forget to get out of my comfort zone. You only live once and I notice that many people live by the rules. I sometimes catch myself doing it too, but you should try to enjoy as much as possible and do what really makes you happy. As a little girl it was my dream to play in a movie or to become a tv host. It would be really great if that dream would come true.”
