Alweer een nieuw Gassan Magazine...

Ik heb het gevoel dat ik het vorige voorwoord net geschreven heb. Wat vliegt de tijd! Het lijkt steeds sneller te gaan.

Wij vrouwen hebben ook heel wat ballen in de lucht te houden. Zorg voor echtgenoot, kinderen, kleinkinderen en ons werk waar we veel van houden. Toch lukt het altijd weer om alles op tijd klaar te krijgen. Zelfs met de deadlines die ons om de oren vliegen!

Terugkijkend op de achterliggende maanden, constateer ik dat er weer ontzettend veel werk verzet is. Onze beeldschone Rolex Boutique (de grootste van Nederland) in het hoofdkantoor van Gassan Diamonds is geopend op 22 oktober. Daphne Deckers en Richard Krajicek hebben de opening samen verricht. Trots dat wij waren dat zij in hun drukke bestaan tijd wisten vrij te maken om dit voor ons te doen!

Heel fijn om te zien dat 500 van onze jarenlange trouwe klanten en relaties er bij wilden zijn om dit heugelijke feit met ons te delen. Het was een avond met een gouden, nee een groen randje. Verderop in dit magazine vindt u de foto’s van deze unieke gebeurtenis.

Tevens een leuk interview met Jack van Gelder. Jack is een jeugdvriend van mijn man en hoewel ze elkaar niet veel zien hebben ze veel telefonisch contact, veelal over voetbal, de band is altijd even sterk.

De pop-up stores van Choices by DL en GASSAN 121 in de Bijenkorf te Amsterdam zijn een feit. Ook hier was sprake van een zeer korte deadline, maar het staat! Wij krijgen veel complimenten en het ziet er spannend uit.

De 4de generatie toont u de nieuwste juwelen en horloges. Ook hebben wij een prachtige betaalbare juwelenlijn ontwikkeld in samenwerking met het Van Gogh museum.

De fotoshoots zijn gemaakt door onze vaste fotografe Tarone Rachamim met haar zus Zoë als ons model, 2 heerlijke jonge meiden die alles met passie en volledige inzet doen. Zij passen zo bij ons!

Ook onze visagiste Angelique Woudenberg behoort tegenwoordig tot onze vaste crew wanneer iedereen er weer mooi op moet staan (en geloof me, sprekend voor mezelf, het wordt op een gegeven leeftijd best lastig om er nog wat leuks van te maken).

De nieuwe website met onder andere de vernieuwde webshop is nu ook een feit, ook hier kunt u meer over lezen in dit magazine.

Alle juwelen- en horlogebeurzen zijn weer bezocht, onze collecties zijn weer prachtig.

Dus u ziet, never a dull moment, maar wat houden wij van ons werk!

Allemaal te leuke dingen, alleen jammer dat een dag maar 24 uur heeft…..

Ik hoop dat de liefde waarmee gewerkt wordt ook voor u duidelijk blijkt uit dit magazine. Kom snel langs bij één van onze locaties , de deuren staan open, de koffie staat klaar en onze medewerkers laten u met alle plezier ons assortiment aan horloges en juwelen zien.

A new Gassan Magazine...

It feels like I wrote the last intro just minutes ago. Time flies and it seems to go by faster and faster. We women always have so many things to do.

We take care of our husband, children, grandchildren and our work we care deeply about. We always manage to get everything done in time.

Even with all the deadlines we have to meet.

When I look back at the last couple of months, I can see we achieved so many great things. The opening of our wonderful Rolex Boutique (the largest in the Netherlands) at Gassan Diamonds headquarters on the 22nd of October. Daphne Deckers and Richard Krajicek opened the boutique together and we are proud these two busy people could make time to do this for us!

It was so nice to see 500 of our loyal customers and business partners wanted to join us at this joyful event. It was a night with a golden, no a green touch to it. In this magazine you can read all about the unique event.

You can also read a great interview with Jack van Gelder. Jack is my husband’s childhood friend and even though they don’t see each other as often as they used to, they frequently call to talk about football and their connection is still as strong as it was when they were younger.

The Choices by DL and GASSAN 121 pop-up stores at the Bijenkorf in Amsterdam are here. The deadline was very short, but we made it! We are receiving many compliments and it looks amazing.

The fourth generation will show you the latest jewels and watches. We also created a gorgeous affordable jewellery collection together with the Van Gogh museum.

Our photographer Tarone Rachamim was in charge of the photo shoots and her sister Zoë was our model. These two magnificent young women are passionate about what they are working on. We are a great match!

Make-up artist Angélique Woudenberg is also part of our regular crew and she creates the most beautiful looks for us (and trust me, at a certain age – talking about myself - it can be quite a challenge to make people look good).

We visited all the jewellery and watch tradeshows and our collections are beautiful as always.

As you can see, never a dull moment, but we love our job so much!

Everything is great and wonderful; it is a shame a day just has 24 hours.

Debora Huisman-Leeser: “Ieder jaar reist het inkoopteam van Gassan af naar Vicenza Oro, dé toonaangevende juwelenbeurs in Vicenza, Italië. Op deze beurs komen alle verschillende aspecten uit de sieradenwereld aan de orde en presenteren vele exposanten hun mooiste producten.

Wat dit jaar erg opviel was de hoeveelheid aan roze tinten, versterkt door een tegenkleur zoals parelachtige nuances. De roze tinten waren zowel in de juwelen terug te vinden als in horloges, vaak gecombineerd met rosé- of witgoud. Ook waren de kleuren meer zichtbaar in de details van de horloges zoals in de wijzerplaten en de horlogekast.

Debora Huisman-Leeser: “Every year Gassan’s team of buyers travels to Vicenza Oro, the leading jewellery exhibition in Vicenza, Italy. At this tradeshow you can view all the different aspects of the jewellery world and many exhibitors present their finest products.

The amount of pink hues, enhanced by a counter colour like pearly shades, really stood out this year. The pink tones were seen in both the jewels and the watches and often combined with rose or white gold. Colours were also more visible in the details of the watches, like the dials and the watch case.”

Het is precies honderd jaar geleden dat een Rolex-horloge als allereerste een certificaat voor een precisie-uurwerk ontvangt. Een unicum, in een tijd waarin dit certificaat alleen is voorbehouden aan marine chronometers. Het is het begin van het succesverhaal van het merk Rolex, dat de wereld kennis laat maken met accurate, luxe en elegante polshorloges.

It has been exactly one hundred years since the very first Rolex watch received a certificate for being a precision watch. At that time this certificate is only reserved for marine chronometers. It marks the beginning of the success story of the brand Rolex, that introduces the world to accurate, luxurious and elegant wristwatches.

De status en de unieke identiteit van Rolex zijn het resultaat van een rijke historie vol passie voor innovatie en een constante honger naar het beste van het beste. The status and unique identity of Rolex are the result of a rich history full of passion for innovation and a constant quest for excellence.

The prestigious Rolex brand is launched in London in 1905 when the 24-year-old German businessman and engineer Hans Wilsdorf (18811960) starts a business that specializes in the distribution of timepieces.

In an era when pocket watches are the order of the day, he quickly grasps the potential of wristwatches, although at the time they are not very precise. It is his dream to produce an accurate and elegant one. The visionary with extraordinary entrepreneurial spirit believes watches can be a daily necessity.

In 1908 deponeert Wilsdorf de naam Rolex en in 1910 ontvangt het merk al haar eerste onderscheiding voor een horloge, het eerste Zwitserse certificaat voor chronometrische precisie. In 1908 Wilsdorf deposits the name Rolex and in 1910 the brand receives its first award for a watch, the first Swiss certificate for chronometric precision. And that’s not all: four years later Rolex receives the very first ‘Class A’ rating certificate for a wristwatch. A distinction, which until that point in time had only been reserved exclusively for marine chronometers.

And Wilsdorf turns out to be right: a modern, accurate and reliable wristwatch is now an essential item for men and women.

With his keen sense of communication Wilsdorf celebrates the victory of the Rolex Oyster with a full-page advertisement on the front page of the British newspaper Daily Mail.

Self-winding mechanism With his innovative vision in the field of communication, but also technology, organization and distribution Wilsdorf turns Rolex into a very successful business. A century after the start of the company, his influence is still evident in the aesthetics and intrinsic characteristics of the collections. The exceptional watches are all inspired by the original and remain faithful to the heritage of the brand. After chronometric precision and waterproofness, Hans Wilsdorf develops the first selfwinding system in 1931, the Perpetual patented system. Until then watches must be wound by hand daily to make it work. Thanks to wrist movements alone, a watch is now constantly being wound and the first automatic watch is a fact.

Onder leiding van Patrick Heiniger, de zoon en opvolger van André J. Heiniger, lanceert Rolex in 2000 een nieuw model in de Oyster collectie: de nieuwe Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, die meer dan 10 keer bestand is tegen schokken en ongevoelig is voor magnetische velden.

Patrick Heiniger is ook degene die het Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative opzet dat jonge kunstenaars helpt hun volledige potentieel te realiseren en hen laat begeleiden door een gerenommeerde meester in hun discipline.

The First Datejust (1945)

Tijdloze klassiekers In de jaren veertig en vijftig dragen steeds vaker invloedrijke personen de nieuwe prestigieuze modellen van Rolex en de horloges uit de Oyster-collectie worden tijdloze klassiekers. In 1945 is de lancering van de Oyster Perpetual Datejust, het eerste zelfopwindende polshorloge dat de datum weergeeft. Het is een instant succes en wordt het boegbeeld van de Oyster collectie.

Ruim tien jaar later volgt het model Oyster Perpetual Day-Date dat niet alleen de datum maar ook de dag weergeeft op de wijzerplaat. De Oyster Perpetual Day-Date is alleen verkrijgbaar in platina of 18 karaat goud en heeft een cyclooplens die tweeënhalf keer vergoot zodat de datum goed af te lezen is. De Day-Date is momenteel nog steeds een van de populairste modellen.

Extreme situaties Rolex heeft een nauwe relatie met de wereld om ons heen en de horloges leveren zelfs onder extreme situaties goed werk. In de jaren vijftig ontwikkelt het merk ‘Profesional watches’, een serie horloges die meer doen dan de tijd vertellen en die hoge bergen, diepe oceanen, maar ook snelheid en ijskoude omstandigheden weerstaan. In 1953 komt de Oyster Perpetual Explorer uit, een model dat extreme hoogtes aan kan en de Oyster Perpetual Submariner, een duikershorloges dat waterdicht is tot een diepte van 100 meter. In 1955 wordt de Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master gelanceerd, speciaal voor de behoeften van piloten. Het geeft de tijd op verschillende locaties ter wereld weer en is het officiële horloge van verschillende luchtvaartmaatschappijen.

Daarnaast is er het Oyster Perpetual Milgauss model, dat magnetische velden kan weerstaan en de Cosmograph Daytona dat tijdsintervallen en gemiddelde snelheden kan meten. De Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller die in 1967 uitkomt, is waterdicht tot een diepte van maar liefst 610 meter.

Timeless classics In the 1940’s and 1950’s, Rolex launches watches of great prestige that would be worn by influential people and would very rapidly become timeless classics of the Oyster collection. In 1945 the Oyster Perpetual Datejust is launched, the first self-winding wristwatch that displays the date. It is an instant success and the pillar of the Oyster collection.

A decade later the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date makes its debut. It displays the date and also has the day of the week spelt out in full in a window on the dial. The Oyster Perpetual Day-Date is only available in platinum or in 18 karat gold and has a Cyclops lens that facilitates reading the date by enlarging it two and a half times. The Day-Date is currently still one of the most popular models.

Extreme situations Rolex has a close relationship with the world around us and the watches deliver even under extreme situations. In the 1950’s the brand develops the concept of tool-watches called ‘Professional watches’. Wherever extreme conditions prevail, on the seas or in the depths of the oceans, on the highest mountaintops or in polar regions, Rolex continuously tests the precision, waterproofness, robustness and reliability of its timepieces. In 1953 the Oyster Perpetual Explorer is released, which can handle extreme heights and also the Oyster Perpetual Submariner, which is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 meters. In 1955 the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master is launched specifically for the needs of pilots. It is capable of displaying the time in different places on the planet and becomes the official watch for several airlines. In 1956 Rolex presents the Oyster Perpetual Milgauss, designed to resist magnetic fields and in 1963 the brand introduces the Cosmograph Daytona, a chronograph that can measure time intervals and allows the calculation of average speeds. De opening van de nieuwe Rolex Boutique zal bijdragen aan de bekendheid van het hoogstaande Zwitserse horlogemerk in combinatie met Gassan in de hoofdstad van Nederland. Zonnebloemen (1889) Sunflowers Van Gogh keek ongeduldig uit naar de komst van zijn kunstenaarsvriend Gauguin in het ‘gele huis’. Hij besloot voor de kamer van zijn vriend een serie decoratieve stillevens van zonnebloemen te maken. Met de ‘eenvoud’ die hij hierin had bereikt hoopte hij indruk te maken op Gauguin.

Uiteindelijk wist Van Gogh voor het einde van het zonnebloemenseizoen vier stillevens te voltooien, waarvan twee op groot formaat. De boeketten maakte hij steeds groter en uiteindelijk veranderde hij de hoofdkleuren blauw en geel in ‘de drie chromaatgeelen, geel oker en veroneesgroen en anders niets’, schreef hij op 22 januari 1889. Zo liet hij zien dat het mogelijk was een voorstelling te maken met veel varianten van één kleur zonder aan zeggingskracht en vorm in te boeten.

Gauguin vond het laatste schilderij zeer geslaagd, ‘een perfect voorbeeld van een stijl die helemaal Vincent is’.

Van Gogh had tijdens het verblijf van zijn vriend al een nieuwe versie geschilderd en later vroeg Gauguin er een cadeau. Daar voelde Van Gogh niet veel voor. Wel maakte hij nog twee vrije herhalingen, waarvan er één in het Van Gogh Museum hangt.

Van Gogh looked forward with impatience to the arrival of his friend Gauguin at the ‘Yellow House’ and decided to paint a series of decorative still lifes of sunflowers for his fellow artist. He hoped that the ‘simplicity’ he achieved in them would impress Gauguin.

Van Gogh ultimately completed four still lifes before the end of the sunflower season, two of which were large in size. He made the bouquets steadily larger and eventually changed the dominant blue and yellow colours for ‘the three chrome yellows, yellow ochre and Veronese green and nothing else’, he wrote on 22 January 1889. He demonstrated in this way that it was possible to create an image with numerous variations of a single colour, without any sacrifice of eloquence or form.

Gauguin thought the final painting was extremely successful, ‘a perfect example of a style that is completely Vincent’. Van Gogh had already painted a new version during his friend’s stay and Gauguin later asked for one as a gift, which Vincent was reluctant to provide. He later produced two loose copies, however, one of which is now in the Van Gogh Museum.

amandelbloesem (1890) Almond Blossom Van Gogh schilderde dit sprankelende stilleven van tere amandelbloesem tegen een helderblauwe lucht voor zijn pasgeboren neefje Vincent Willem. In de brief waarin hij het goede nieuws meedeelde, schreef zijn broer Theo: ‘Zoals we je hebben gezegd, vernoemen we hem naar jou en ik spreek de wens uit dat hij even vasthoudend en even moedig wordt als jij.’

Als symbool voor het jonge leven koos Van Gogh de takken van de amandelboom, een vroegbloeiende boomsoort, die al in februari de lente aankondigt. Voor het onderwerp, de scherpe omlijningen en de plaatsing van de boom in het beeldvlak liet hij zich inspireren door de Japanse prentkunst. De witte bloesemknoppen waren oorspronkelijk meer roze. Ze zijn onder invloed van het licht verbleekt en hebben aan kleurkracht ingeboet.

Van Gogh had het schilderij bedoeld voor boven het bed van Theo en zijn vrouw Jo. Maar de kersverse ouders hingen het werk in de woonkamer boven de piano. Het is niet verwonderlijk dat het voor de familie Van Gogh altijd het meest dierbare werk is gebleven. Vincent Willem zou later het Van Gogh Museum oprichten.

Van Gogh painted this sparkling still life of delicate almond blossom against a clear blue sky for his new-born nephew Vincent Willem. His brother Theo wrote, in the letter announcing the new arrival: ‘As we told you, we’ll name him after you, and I’m making the wish that he may be as determined and as courageous as you.’

As a symbol of this new life, Van Gogh chose the branches of an almond tree – a variety that blossoms as early as February in the south of France, where it announces the coming spring. The subject, the bold outlines and the positioning of the tree in the picture plane are borrowed from Japanese printmaking. The white blossoms were originally more pink but have faded on exposure to light, losing some of their chromatic intensity.

Van Gogh meant the painting to hang over Theo and his wife Jo’s bed. The couple preferred, however, to display it over the piano in their living room. Unsurprisingly, it was the work that remained closest to the hearts of the Van Gogh family. Vincent Willem went on to found the Van Gogh Museum.

Gassan Diamonds was extremely proud to welcome Caroline of Monaco, Princess of Hanover, to the historic diamond cutting factory on the occasion of the official launch of AMADE Netherlands.

After introducing Gassan Diamonds, Debora Huisman-Leeser personally presented the auction object to Princess Caroline: a gorgeous pair of Choices by DL earrings and a ring from the ‘Fly me to the Moon’ collection.

The Choices by DL jewellery will be up for auction at the AMADE Netherlands gala event, which will be held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The proceeds of the gala night auction will benefit Syrian children in Jordanian refugee camps. At the invitation of UNHCR, the UN refugee aid organisation, an AMADE delegation visited several refugee camps in Jordan last October. This auction is AMADE’s way to support the “Time to Act”.

Nederlands bekendste sportverslaggever Jack van Gelder werd op 27 december 1950 geboren in Amsterdam. Hij groeide naar eigen zeggen op met de Amsterdamse voetbalclub AFC, waar tegenwoordig ook zijn zoon en kleinzoon actief zijn.

Jack ging in 1972 werken bij de TROS en vanaf 1976 was hij tevens werkzaam voor de NOS als sportverslaggever. Later presenteerde Jack meerdere amusement programma’s zoals "Te land, ter zee en in de lucht", "Spel zonder grenzen", "Dat zeg ik niet" en "Sweethearts".

Tegenwoordig presenteert Jack Studio Voetbal op zondagavond, waarbij hij samen met Jan van Halst, Jan Mulder en een gast het voetbalnieuws van commentaar voorziet. Ook presenteert hij voor NOS Studio Sport de studio uitzendingen rondom de Champions League wedstrijden en voor NOS Langs de Lijn het radiocommentaar bij Europese wedstrijden van Nederlandse clubs, wedstrijden in de Eredivisie en de wedstrijden van het Nederlands Elftal.

Daarnaast is Jack al jarenlang bevriend met de familie Leeser. We spraken hem op het hoofdkantoor van Gassan aan de Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat. Een bekende locatie voor hem, want Jack heeft de officiële opening van Gassan Diamonds in dit gebouw mogen begeleiden.

The most famous sports reporter from the Netherlands Jack van Gelder was born on December 27 1950 in Amsterdam. Over the years he spent a lot of times at football club AFC from Amsterdam, where nowadays his son and grandson are active.

Jack started working at the TROS in 1972 and has been working at the NOS as a sports reporter since 1976.

Jack also presented several entertainment shows such as ‘Te land, ter zee en in de lucht’, ‘Spel zonder grenzen’, ‘Dat zeg ik niet’ en ‘Sweethearts’.

Today Jack presents ‘Studio Voetbal op zondagavond’, in which he comments on football matches alongside Jan van Halst, Jan Mulder and a guest. He also hosts ‘NOS Studio Sport’ before and after Champions League matches and is one of the football commentators on the radio show ‘NOS Langs de Lijn’.

Jack has been a good friend of the Leeser family for years. We talked to him at the headquarters of Gassan at the Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat. He knows this location very well and even performed the official opening of Gassan Diamonds here.

Hoe is uw vriendschap met de familie Leeser ontstaan?

Ik ken Benno Leeser al zo’n 50 jaar. We kwamen elkaar van jongs af aan tegen bij de plaatselijke voetbalclub, AFC. Mijn vader deed veel voor de club waardoor ook ik er veel uurtjes heb door gebracht. Daarnaast zijn Benno en ik opgegroeid in dezelfde buurt en kwamen we elkaar vaak tegen via gemeenschappelijke vrienden. Op een gegeven moment ontstaat er een band met elkaar, die versterkt wordt door onze gezamenlijke liefde voor het voetbal en mooie horloges.

U draagt een Panerai horloge, waarom heeft u gekozen voor dit merk?

Het merk Panerai is uniek in zijn soort, met een stoer en bijzonder design, zoals de combinatie van het Italiaanse design met het robuuste uurwerk. Vooral de wijzerplaat met een innovatieve kroonbeveiliging aan de zijkant van de kast maakt het voor mij een klasse apart. Het was al heel lang een wens van mij om een Panerai aan mijn collectie toe te voegen, voorlopig is mijn collectie dan ook compleet. Al betwijfel ik of ik ooit zal stoppen met het aanschaffen van horloges, ik ben nou eenmaal een horlogefreak.

Een horlogefreak?

Ja, ik houd echt van horloges! Ik vind ze bijzonder en kijk er graag naar. Mijn collectie bestaat uit verschillende merken zoals IWC, Rolex, Cartier, Chopard, Breitling, Audemars Piquet, Milus en Jaeger LeCoultre. Veel uiteenlopende merken, maar ik vind het leuk om ze af te wisselen.

How did your friendship with the Leeser family start?

I have known Benno Leeser for about 50 years. We met when we were young and saw each other often at the local football club, AFC. My father did a lot for the club, which is why I also spent a lot of time there.

Benno and I also grew up in the same neighbourhood and had mutual friends. We bonded over our shared love for football and beautiful watches.

You wear a Panerai watch, why did you choose this brand?

The brand Panerai is unique in its kind; the design is tough and special, a combination of Italian design and a robust timepiece. Because of the nice dial and an innovative protection for the winding crown, the brand is in a class of its own. It has been a dream of mine to add a Panerai to my collection, so for now my collection is complete. Though I doubt I will ever stop buying watches, I happen to be a watch addict.

You are a watch addict?

Yes, I love watches! I think they're special and I enjoy looking at them.

My collection consists of different brands such as IWC, Rolex, Cartier, Chopard, Breitling, Audemars Piquet, Jaeger LeCoultre and Milus. It is quite a variety of brands; I like to have a choice to what I’m going to wear.

“Ik ben nou eenmaal een horlogefreak”

Heeft u ook horloges met een emotionele waarde?

Ja, zeker! Een hele speciale zelfs! Ik heb een Cartier horloge gekregen van Benno met daarin een inscriptie. Dit omdat ik de opening van Gassan Diamonds op de locatie waar ze nu zitten heb verzorgd destijds.

Dit horloge brengt goede herinneringen bij me naar boven.

Bent u ook een diamantliefhebber?

Nee, ik zelf heb niet specifiek iets met diamanten, dan ga ik liever voor een mooi horloge. Wel vind ik het prachtig als een vrouw juwelen met diamant draagt.

Draagt u naast uw horloge verder nog juwelen?

Nee, ik heb wel een tijdje mijn trouwring gedragen maar ik vond het niet fijn zitten en kon er maar niet aan wennen. Uiteindelijk heb ik besloten om hem af te doen, al ben ik wel nog steeds getrouwd hoor.

We kennen u vooral als commentator bij voetbalwedstrijden, zowel op tv als via de radio. Waar gaat uw eigen voorkeur naar uit?

Tijdens het WK, EK en bij sommige Champions League wedstrijden doe ik voor en na de wedstrijd tv-werk. Maar voornamelijk verzorg ik tijdens de wedstrijden het radioverslag voor NOS Langs de lijn. Het is allebei een prachtige job, maar als ik echt moet kiezen dan zou ik voor mijn werk bij de radio gaan. Radio is een fantastisch medium. Het biedt mij een bepaalde vrijheid, ook omdat je maar weinig nodig hebt om je werk te doen, zo kan je via de telefoon al een radio-item maken. Op tv heb je altijd een hele crew om je heen nodig. Een ander bijkomend voordeel van de radio is dat je je niet hoeft te scheren! Dat is op een bepaalde manier ook vrijheid!

Heeft u zelf ook een favoriet als presentator?

Als presentator op sportgebied vind ik Gary Lineker fantastisch!

Do you have watches that have a sentimental value?

Yes, for sure! I have a very special watch. To thank me for opening Gassan Diamonds at the Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat Benno gave me an inscribed Cartier watch. This watch brings back good memories.

Are you a fan of diamonds?

No, not really. I'd rather go for a nice watch. But I love it when a woman wears diamond jewellery.

Besides your watch, do you wear jewels?

No, I have worn my wedding ring for a while but I could not get used to it. Finally I decided to take it off, although I am still married.

We mainly know you as a commentator for football matches, both on television and on the radio. What medium do you prefer?

During the World Cup, European Championships and some of the Champions League matches I often host a television show before and after the match. For the radio show ‘Langs de lijn’ I commentate the matches. I love both jobs, but if I have to choose I would pick my job at the radio. Radio is a great medium. It gives me a certain freedom, you do not need a lot of things to make an item, and you could even do it on the phone. On television, you always have an entire crew around you.

Another advantage of radio is that you do not have to shave. In a way, that is freedom!

Do you have a favourite presenter?

As a sports presenter, I think Gary Lineker is fantastic. He has that typical British humour that I like. That is also why I follow him on Twitter and I highly recommend following him.

On the internet you are also known as a musical star?

A musical star? I'm not. I have played the role of Thenardier in Les Miserables in Carré seven times. That was great, but I would not call myself a musical star.

Hij heeft zo’n typische Engelse humor, daar houd ik wel van. Daarom volg ik hem ook op Twitter, echt een aanrader!

Op internet wordt u ook wel een musicalster genoemd.

Een musicalster? Nee, dat ben ik niet! Ik heb zeven keer de rol van Thenardier mogen spelen in Les Miserables in Carré. Dat was geweldig maar daar wil ik mijzelf geen musicalster om noemen hoor.

Wie vindt u wel een echte musicalster?

Beste musicalsterren van eigen bodem vind ik Simone Kleinsma en Jon van Eerd. Twee ervaren rotten uit het vak. Ik vind het echt noemenswaardig wat zij voor elkaar kunnen krijgen, avond na avond.

Als u niet succesvol op tv was geworden, wat had u dan willen doen?

Dan was ik in de modebranche gebleven. Ik heb als modeagent dames-, heren- en sportmode verkocht aan winkeliers. Daarna heb ik een eigen modelabel gehad; For Fellows. Hier zou ik dan mee verder zijn gegaan. Ik heb het een tijdje kunnen combineren met mijn journalistieke carrière.

Dit was een erg mooie combinatie maar ik heb inmiddels mijn aandelen in For Fellows verkocht.

Dus u had zelf geen ambitie in de voetballerij?

Nee, niet als profvoetballer, ook nooit gehad. Daarvoor beschikte ik niet over de juiste vaardigheden.

Wel heb ik tot mijn 57e gevoetbald bij AFC, maar helaas was ik genoodzaakt om te stoppen vanwege een versleten knie.

Misschien dat ik ooit nog iets ga doen in het voetbal, maar dan is het zeker iets buiten de lijnen!

Voor welke club had u anders graag willen voetballen?

Niet voor een specifieke club. Het ultieme, onbereikbare doel, was het Nederlands elftal. Ik vind dat het hoogst haalbare om voor je land te mogen spelen. Klaar staan voor het Wilhelmus..

Wat is uw favoriete voetbalclub?

Dat is buiten kijf AFC! Als Amsterdammer ben ik natuurlijk ook opgegroeid met Ajax, maar mijn hart ligt bij AFC, ik zie het als mijn club.

De beste voetballer vind ik nog steeds Johan Cruijff, dat is voor mij de meest briljante voetballer aller tijden.

Is de charme van het voetbal er nog steeds ondanks de enorme geldbedragen die er in omgaan?

Ja zeker, het is natuurlijk een gekke wereld met die belachelijke hoge bedragen, maar dat komt door de belangstelling van tv en door de sponsoren. Het is een multimediaal circus geworden. Waar vroeger kinderen idolaat waren van popartiesten, zijn het nu de helden van de sport! En dat gevoegd bij de belangstelling van investeerders uit landen zoals Rusland en het Midden Oosten, zorgt voor de explosie van de geldbedragen in het hedendaagse voetbal.

Wie is uw grootste voorbeeld?

Dat is Rinus Michels, hij is de rode draad door mijn leven geweest.

Het begon toen hij mij trainde in de B junioren van AFC, daarna heb ik hem geïnterviewd bij vele gelegenheden en leerde ik hem steeds beter kennen. Ja, hij was uniek en grondlegger voor het professionele voetbal in Nederland in de jaren 60. Verantwoordelijk voor de grote successen van Ajax en het Nederlands elftal. Een man met een enorme autoriteit, geniale humor en die naarmate hij ouder werd, ook steeds "menselijker" werd.

Ik denk nog vaak aan hem en ik deel deze bewondering onder meer met Benno. Voor Benno was het zelfs oom Rinus, een goede vriend van zijn vader.

Who do you think is a real musical star?

I think Simone Kleinsma and Jon van Eerd are the best Dutch musical stars. They are true professionals. I think it is amazing what they do, night after night.

If you had not become successful on TV, what would you like to do?

I would probably still be working in the fashion industry. I was a fashion agent and sold women's, men's and sports fashion to retailers. I also had my own fashion label: For Fellows and I would probably still be working for my label. For a while I could combine it with my journalistic career and it was a nice combination, but now I have sold my shares in For Fellows.

So you did not have the ambition to work in football?

No not as a professional football player. I never had, I did not have the right skills. I have played football until I was 57 at AFC, but unfortunately I was forced to stop because of my knee. I might start working in the football industry someday, but it's definitely going to be something outside the lines!

If you had the chance, what football club would you like to play at?

Not for a specific club. The ultimate, unattainable goal for me is the Dutch team. I think playing for your country is the highest achievable.

What is your favourite football club?

That is AFC, without a doubt! I am from Amsterdam, so of course I grew up with Ajax, but my heart is with AFC. That is my club. To me the most brilliant, best player of all time is Johan Cruijff.

Did football lose its charm because of the huge amounts of money going around?

Not at all. It is a crazy world with ridiculously high prices, but that is due to the interest of television networks and sponsors. It has become a multimedia circus. Children once idolized pop artists and right now sports heroes are the new idols. Now that investors from countries like Russia and the Middle East are interested in football, the amount of money going around in modern football has exploded.

Who is your biggest example?

That's Rinus Michels, he has been the common thread throughout my life. He was my trainer when I played in the B Juniors at AFC and after that I interviewed him on many occasions and I got to know him better and better. He was unique and the founder of professional football in the Netherlands in the 1960s. He is responsible for the great successes of Ajax and the Dutch national team. He was a man with a huge authority, his humour was ingenious and as he grew older, he also became more ‘humane’.

I often still think of him and I share this admiration with Benno.

For Benno Rinus was an uncle, a dear friend of his father.

Vogue fashion’s night out!

Op 4 september beleefde Vogue Fashion’s Night Out alweer de derde Nederlandse editie. Ook Gassan Dam Square was net als vorig jaar van de partij en voor het eerst deed ook de Jaeger LeCoultre Boutique in de P.C. Hooftstraat mee. Speciaal voor deze avond waren Miss Nederland World Tatjana Maul en Miss Nederland Universe Yasmin Verheijen aanwezig, draaide er een DJ en waren er lekkere hapjes en drankjes.

Rond half zeven was er bij Gassan Dam Square een groot kabaal te horen en kwam de gehele Vogue redactie aanrijden in een stoet met ronkende Harley Davidson motoren. Uitgebreid zwaaiend met Vogue vlaggen reden zij richting de ingang van de Bijenkorf.

De officiële opening van de avond vond plaats door middel van het doorknippen van een lint in de Bijenkorf zelf.

Ook dit jaar was het een geslaagde, warme en fashionable avond!

Op naar editie 4!

The third Dutch edition of Vogue’s Fashion Night Out took place on the 4th of September. Gassan Dam Square was joined in on the fun just like last year and for the first time the Jaeger LeCoultre Boutique at the P.C. Hooftstraat also joined the festivities. Miss Netherlands World Tatjana Maul en Miss Netherlands Universe Yasmin Verheijen both were among the guests, a DJ was behind the decks and there were all kinds of drinks and snacks.

Around half past six a lot of noise could be heard at Gassan Dam Square. The entire Vogue editorial team arrived on roaring Harley Davidson motorcycles. The Vogue team waved their Vogue flags and drove towards the Bijenkorf entrance. When the ribbon was cut inside the Bijenkorf, Vogue’s Fashion Night Out was officially opened.

It was a warm, successful and fashionable evening! We can’t wait for the fourth edition!

latest watch news Beste lezers, Zo aan het eind van het kalenderjaar zijn nagenoeg alle nieuwe horloge modellen op de markt gekomen. We zien nog altijd veel rosé- en witgouden horloges waarbij het opvallend is dat de meeste merken teruggrijpen naar de roemruchte jaren ’50 en ’60 van de vorige eeuw.

Een paar voorbeelden hiervan zijn de Carrera lijn van Tag Heuer en ook de nieuwe Cellini lijn van Rolex. Trend is het dragen van armbanden bij het horloge, ook bij de heren. Onze collecties herensieraden van de merken Baraka en Albanu zijn daarom uitgebreider dan voorheen. Na een aantal jaren alleen maar steeds grotere horloges gezien te hebben, is opmerkelijk dat nu met name de dames meer vragen naar kleinere, elegante exemplaren. Hier hebben wij in onze collectie uiteraard rekening mee gehouden. Bij de dameshorloges zien wij ook weer veel staal, witen roségoud terugkomen. Eén van de hoogtepunten met betrekking tot horloges zal de lancering van een zeer gelimiteerde lijn zijn die wij i.s.m. Christiaan van der Klaauw uitgeven. Deze bestaan uit slechts 3 modellen in staal en 2 modellen in roségoud. De limited editions zullen tijdens de Masters of LXRY gepresenteerd worden, van 11 tot en met 15 december 2014. Wij hopen u zeker daar, maar wellicht al eerder bij Gassan, te mogen begroeten.

Dear readers, At the end of the year almost all the new watch models are introduced. We still see a lot of rose and white gold watches and it is striking that most brands take us back to the roaring 1950s and 1960s, as we can see when we look at the Carrera collection by Tag Heuer and the new Cellini collection by Rolex. Wearing bracelets with the watch is a big trend, even for men. That’s why our men’s jewellery collections of the brands Baraka and Albanu are also more extensive than before. After noticing watches getting bigger and bigger for a few years, we now see specifically women asking for small and elegant copies. And of course we took it into account in our collection. Another trend in women’s watches is steel, white and rose gold. One of the highlights for Gassan’s watches will be the launch of a very limited edition collection we are selling in collaboration with Christiaan van der Klaauw. This collection contains three steel models and two rose gold watches. The limited editions will be presented during the Masters of LXRY event, which will be held from December 11 till December 15. We hope to see you there of maybe even sooner at Gassan.

the hydro mechanical horologists Maandagavond 3 november vond een uniek herenevent plaats ter gelegenheid van de lancering van het horlogemerk HYT bij Gassan Diamonds. Tijdens de avond werd het Zwitserse haute horlogeriemerk HYT geïntroduceerd aan het publiek en kregen de gasten een Masterclass van Remy Martin die in het teken stond van de Centaure de Diamant, een zeer kostbare cognac die sinds eind oktober in Nederland verkrijgbaar is. Dit alles onder het genot van heerlijke hapjes van restaurant ’t Kalfje.

HYT’s Hydro-mechanische horlogmakers hebben utopia tot leven gewekt – vloeistof gecombineerd met mechanisme in een polshorloge. Uniek en toch volledig volgens de strikte codes van Fine Watchmaking, klaar om iedereen te verpletteren! Door de enorme uitdaging van het aanduiden van tijd met vloeistof hebben ze in feite twee werelden samengebracht die eigenlijk niet samen gaan en hiermee het onmogelijke mogelijk gemaakt.

Nooit eerder sinds de waterklokken van farao’s zijn de wetten van de zwaartekracht overwonnen bij het omzetten van energie in een draagbaar horloge.

Het is onder andere eigenaar van de merken Rado, Longines, Omega, Breguet, Tissot en Swatch De Zwitserse horloge-industrie is de grootste ter wereld, maar als tijdens de economische crisis dertig jaar geleden buitenlandse concurrenten de markt lijken over te nemen, besluiten Zwitserse investeerders en ondernemer Nicolas G. Hayek (1928 – 2010) dat horlogemakers uit Zwitserland hun krachten moeten bundelen. Hayek richt het iconische merk Swatch op, met zeer betaalbare kunststof horloges in vrolijke kleuren. The Swatch Group is the world’s largest manufacturer of watches. The Swiss company produces components, mechanisms, watches and jewelry. It owns brands like Rado, Longines, Omega, Breguet, Tissot and Swatch and changes the watchmaking industry.

The Swiss watchmaking industry is the largest in de world. When during the economical crisis thirty years ago, foreign companies almost take over the market, Swiss bankers and entrepeneur Nicolas G. Hayek (1928 – 2010) decide Swiss watchmakers should join forces. Hayek founds the iconic brand Swatch, with payable plastic watches in cheerful colours. Because of smart marketing the brand turns out to be a hit and the watch becomes a fashion item. The industry revives and Hayek conjoins watchmaking companies ASUAG and SSIH with established brands like Tissot and Omega and creates SMH, Swiss Corporation for Microelectronics and Watchmaking Industries.

A few years later he renames the conglomerate to The Swatch Group and it turns out to be a successful move. Within five years the firm is the most important watch manufacturer in the world.

Lens Jeremain Jeremain Lens, geboren op 24 november 1987 in Amsterdam, is een Nederlandse voetballer en speelt sinds het seizoen 2013/2014 voor FC Dynamo Kiev.

Daarvoor speelde hij bij PSV, AZ en op huurbasis voor NEC. Voordat hij in augustus 2010 debuteerde in het Nederlands elftal kwam hij ook al uit voor het Surinaams Nationaal elftal.

Jeremain Lens, born in Amsterdam on November 24th 1987, is a Dutch football player who has been with FC Dynamo Kiev since the 2013/14 season. Before that he played for PSV and AZ, and for NEC on a hired basis. Prior to making his debut on the Dutch national team in August 2010, he was also part of the Surinam national football team.

He started thinking of developing a children’s brand, Jourmain, two years ago and hired a team of fashion professionals to do it right. Jourmain was designed exclusively for modern fashionable kids aged 4 to 12. The products are made with love and represent quality and heritage. Twee jaar geleden ontstond het idee om het kindermerk Jourmain te starten. Hiervoor schakelde Jeremain een team van modeprofessionals in. Jourmain is exclusief ontworpen voor moderne ‘fashionable’ kids van 4 tot 12 jaar. De items worden met liefde gemaakt en staan voor kwaliteit en erfgoed. Vakmanschap zit in de tijd die gegeven wordt aan ieder product en de selectie van de beste materialen.

Waar haal je de inspiratie vandaan voor je onlangs gelanceerde kinderkledinglijn Jourmain?

Ik raak geïnspireerd door de mooie dingen om mij heen, en er is zoveel moois te zien. Al deze invloeden vertaal ik naar een collectiebeeld. De jongens en meiden van Jourmain zijn sportief, romantisch en stoer tegelijk.

Het zijn de kids die het verhaal van het merk vertellen, zij creëren onze wereld. Met optimisme en vrolijkheid tekenen ze hun weg uit naar de toekomst.

In hoeveel winkels is Jourmain verkrijgbaar en ben je van plan om internationaal te gaan met het merk?

In het binnen- en buitenland wordt goed gereageerd op de Jourmain collectie. Het merk is binnenkort ook verkrijgbaar bij Azzurro Kids in Amsterdam. In januari staat Jourmain op de Pitti Bimbo in Florence, de meest toonaangevende kinderkledingbeurs te wereld.

Heb je de ambitie om ook een kledinglijn op te zetten voor volwassenen?

Onze focus ligt in eerste instantie op de Jourmain kinderkledingcollectie.

Maar dromen mag natuurlijk altijd. Wie weet…

Waarin en waarmee onderscheidt Jourmain zich van andere merken?

De Jourmain collectie heeft een onderscheidende pasvorm, mooie details en een stijlvoll afwerking. Couturestoffen zijn verwerkt tot ready-towear snoepgoed. Klassieke stijlen worden fashionable door zorgvuldig geselecteerde materialen en kleuren. Aandacht voor detail en kennis van het metier maken ieder aspect van de collectie de moete waard.

We zien steeds mee mono-brand boetieks ontstaan, is dat ook de kant die jij met je eigen label op zou willen gaan?

Het zou heel mooi zijn om in de grote modesteden zoals Milaan, Londen, Parijs en New York “Jourmain” boetieks te hebben. Ik sluit deze mogelijkheid dan ook niet uit.

Als je ambassadeur van een horlogemerk zou mogen zijn, welke zou je dan kiezen en waarom?

Dan zou ik Rolex kiezen. Dit merk brengt horloges die je op alle momenten van de dag kunt dragen en die altijd goed passen bij mijn outfits; of dat nu zakelijk, casual of sportief is.

Hoe zie jij juwelen en horloges als onderdeel van een outfit of stijl?

Juwelen en horloges zijn een vast onderdeel van mijn stijl. Ik heb inmiddels een mooie verzameling juwelen en horloges opgebouwd. Ik combineer bijvoorbeeld de ring van mijn moeder en de rozenkrans om mijn hals met Cartier juwelen.

Hoe zou je je eigen smaak omschrijven als het gaat om accessoires en juwelen/horloges?

Ik heb oog voor detail. Ik houd van de classics en die combineer ik graag met items waaruit karakter spreekt.

Hoe omschrijf je jouw favoriete kledingstijl en wat zijn je favoriete merken?

Casual Chic. Ik maak graag een mix tussen merken en stijlen. Mijn favoriete merken zijn Balmain, Dsquared, Givenchy, Neil Barrett, Balenciaga en Louis Vuitton.

Hoe combineer je je professionele voetbalcarrière en kledinglijn met je privéleven?

Ik ben een professional die het beste eist van zichzelf als vader, voetballer en zakenman. Ik omring mezelf met mensen die dezelfde passie en visie delen als ik. Love your main thing! Dat is mijn privéleven.

Wat kunnen we het aankomende jaar van jou verwachten?

Mijn dromen waarmaken in elk opzicht.

Which three words would you use to describe yourself and why?

Honest, helpful and self-assured. ‘Honest’ because I can’t stand injustice.

I listen to everyone, and am always willing to help if I can. I am self-assured because I know what I want and will do anything to achieve my goals – as long as it’s fair and square.

Where do you get your inspiration for your new children’s fashion collection Jourmain?

I am inspired by beautiful things that surround me. There is so much beauty to discover. I translate these influences into a collection concept.

Jourmain boys and girls are sporty, romantic and tough at the same time.

The children are the ones who tell the brand’s story; they create our world.

They draw their path to the future with optimism and joy.

In how many shops is Jourmain available, and are you planning to take the brand global?

Response to the Jourmain collection is positive, both in the Netherlands and abroad. The brand will be introduced shortly at Azzurro Kids in Amsterdam. In January, Jourmain will travel to the Pitti Bimbo in Florence, the leading international children’s fashion fair.

Would you like to launch a clothing line for adults as well?

We focus primarily on the Jourmain children’s fashion collection, for now.

You can always dream, of course, so who knows…

How does Jourmain stand out among other brands?

The Jourmain collection has a distinctive cut, beautiful detailing and a stylish finish. Couture fabrics are transformed into ready-to-wear candy.

Classic styles become fashionable through carefully selected materials and colours. An eye for detail and mastery of the craft make every aspect of the collection worthwhile.

We are seeing more and more mono-brand boutiques. Is that what you would like to do with your own label?

It would be great to have Jourmain boutiques in big fashion cities like Milan, London, Paris and New York. Anything is possible.

If you were an ambassador for a watch brand, which brand would you pick and why?

I would go with Rolex. It’s a brand that makes watches that you can wear any time of the day, and that will always fit well with my outfits, whether business, casual or sportive.

Do you see watches and jewellery as part of an outfit or style?

Jewellery and watches are definitely part of my style. I have collected a nice set of jewellery and watches. I would combine my mother’s ring and rosary with Cartier jewellery, for instance.

How would you describe your taste in accessories and jewellery/ watches?

I have an eye for detail. I like the classics and love to combine them with items with an attitude.

How would you describe your favourite clothing style and what are your favourite brands?

Casual Chic. I like to mix up brands and styles. My favourite brands are Balmain, Dsquared, Givenchy, Neil Barrett, Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton.

How do you combine your football career and fashion label with your private life?

I am a professional who demands the best from himself as a father, football player and businessman. I surround myself with people who share my passion and vision. Love your main thing! That is my private life.

I will realise my dreams in every way.
