Beste lezers, In deze nieuwe editie van ons magazine leest u van alles over de Gassan 121, onze briljant met 121 facetten in plaats van de 57 die een gewone briljant heeft.

We introduceerden de slijpvorm 10 jaar geleden tijdens Masters of LXRY (voorheen de Miljonair Fair) en het was direct een succes. Door de 64 extra facetten geeft een Gassan 121 nog meer schittering dan een traditionele briljant.

De Gassan 121 is ons best verkochte diamant en om het 10-jarig jubileum te vieren, hebben we een speciaal collier en oorbellen ontworpen in samenwerking met het juwelenhuis Schaffrath en brengen we samen met Biegert & Funk een limited edition QlockTwo uit. Prachtstukken die wederom geïntroduceerd worden tijdens de Masters of LXRY. Dit jaar is het ook 125 jaar geleden dat Vincent van Gogh overleed. Om dat te herdenken wordt dit jaar in Nederland, maar ook in België, Frankrijk en Engeland gevierd dat de kunstschilder al 125 jaar mensen over de hele wereld inspireert. Gassan Diamonds viert mee en eert Vincent van Gogh met drie juwelencollecties en een exclusief horloge.

Axel Rüger, al bijna 10 jaar directeur van het Van Gogh Museum, vertelt over het jubileumjaar.

Met de romantische en sfeervolle aangelegenheden zoals de feestdagen en Valentijnsdag voor de deur, zijn de donkere dagen veelal het moment om je geliefde om de hand te vragen. Ter inspiratie hebben we vijf populaire verlovingsringen voor u op een rijtje gezet. Het is bijzonder om te zien dat er in de loop der jaren weinig is veranderd; de klassieke zettingen zijn nog steeds het meest geliefd.

Op de website van gassan vindt u een ringfinder. Hiermee kunt u zelf de perfecte ring samenstellen door middel van het kiezen van een diamant en een zetting.

Gassan is een familiebedrijf en ook de medewerkers die hier vaak al jaren werken, voelen als familie. Jeannette Heessels werkt bijvoorbeeld al 25 jaar bij Gassan en ging voor ons op reis naar Afrika, waar zij de mijnen bezocht waar Fairtrade goud wordt gewonnen. Gassan stapt voor de in Nederland geproduceerde eigen collectie over op ‘goed goud’ met het Max Havelaar keurmerk. Een belangrijke stap en Jeannette onderzocht en ondervond wat het keurmerk betekent voor de mijnwerkers en de gemeenschap.

Ook komen er twee van onze slijpsters aan het woord, beide al meer dan 20 jaar werkzaam voor Gassan Diamonds. Ze vertellen ons waarom ze voor het, toch vaak aangezien als mannenberoep, diamantslijpen hebben gekozen.

Dat familie belangrijk is, lezen we ook in het artikel Working Moms, waarvoor we twee drukbezette moeders van buiten ons bedrijf interviewden. In this latest edition of our magazine you can read all about our Gassan 121 brilliant with its 121 facets instead of the 57 a regular brilliant has. This stone with its unique cut has brought us so much. It has been 10 years since we introduced the unique cut at the Masters of Luxury (formerly known as the Miljonair Fair) in 2005. It was fantastic to see how our customers, immediately saw the extra shine and we sold many copies.

The Gassan 121 is still our most sold product and to celebrate our 10-year anniversary we made a special necklace and earrings in collaboration with the Schaffrath Company.

We also made a list of the top 5 most sold engagement rings. It is so special to see nothing has really changed; de classic settings are still the most loved.

My son David informs you about the watches and my daughter Debora will tell you all about the latest trends in jewellery.

We have many hard-working employees, many men and also a lot of women. I highlighted some of them for you. Gassan would not be Gassan if we would not be interested and working with ‘goed goud’, fair trade gold. Jeannette Heessels that has been working at Gassan for more than 25 years, went to the gold mines in Africa en will tell you what she found out while she was there. The result is a contemporary and very interesting story you should not overlook.

The manager at our diamond factory, Marie-Louise Bartels and diamond polisher Barbara Otten are two very passionate ladies who tell all about their work.

We also interviewed two working moms, outside of our company. Karin Swerink, the editor in chief of Vogue Netherlands who only had her third child a few months ago and Janine Breukhoven-Kho, who is also a mother and is very successful with her website Pretapregnant.com. They are fully committed, which is a must for them to perform their jobs properly.

Portugieser Perpetual Calendar. Ref. 5034: Achter een icoon zit een interessant verhaal. En wat voor de legendarische Portugese zeevaarders gold, geldt ook voor IWC’s eigen Por tugieser. Het horloge ontstond immers uit dezelfde ontembare hang naar innovatie en is nog steeds de belichaming van expertise op horlogegebied. Vijfenzeventig jaar geleden klopten twee Portugese zakenmannen bij IWC aan met het verzoek een horloge te maken met de precisie van een scheepschronometer. De hor loge ma ke r s va n IWC be dachte n e e n onge ke nde oplossing: ze plaatsten het uurwerk van een zakhorloge in de kast van een polshorloge. Daarmee creëerden ze een horlogefamilie van tijdloze elegantie en gedistingeerde technologie, gecombineerd met ongeëvenaarde complex-

iteit die tot op de dag van vandaag tot de verbeelding spreek t. Het uur werk zelf is zichtbaar door het transparante saffierglas aan de achterkant voor een ongehinderd zicht op de indrukwekkende precisie van het IWC 52000 kaliber uurwerk. De complexiteit van het horloge is prachtig vormgegeven met de eeuwigdurende kalender, die gemakkelijk aangepast kan worden met de kroon. Net als de sterrenhemel een schip veilig naar de haven leidde, helpt het horloge de drager met een blik op de eeuwigdurende kalender en maanfaseweergave veilig door de tijd. En dat is hoe we 75 jaar horlogerie in één tijdloos uurwerk weten te vangen – een uurwerk dat dankzij de unieke combinatie van perfectie en elegantie inmiddels zelf een I WC . Dertien jaar geleden kreeg Steve Bierman een idee voor een nieuwe slijpvorm voor diamanten. Na drie jaar ontwerpen, ontwikkelen en perfectioneren wordt tien jaar geleden de eerste Gassan 121 gecreëerd.

Geen 57 facetten zoals een traditionele briljant, maar 121. De unieke slijpvorm creëert 16 facetten meer op de kroon en 48 facetten meer aan de paviljoenzijde, dan een traditionele briljant. Door de extra facetten wordt het licht nog beter weerkaatst en daardoor heeft de steen een hogere schittering dan andere diamanten of briljanten.

In het kantoor van Gassan in Antwerpen zit Steve Bierman, een jeugdige vijftiger. Leesbrilletje en diamantloep rond zijn nek, een smartphone, laptop en tablet binnen handbereik. Al is zitten veel gezegd. Bierman zit – letterlijk – nooit stil, en zowat elke vijf minuten rinkelt de telefoon of kondigt een belletje aan dat er een bericht binnenkomt; iemand die op zoek is naar een bepaalde diamant, advies vraagt, de aankoop van een partij ruwe stenen wil bespreken. In de wereld van de diamanthandel stopt het werk nooit.

Steve Bierman is a youthful man in his fifties. His reading glasses and a diamant loupe hang around his neck, a smartphone, laptop and tablet are within reach. Bierman never sits still -literally- and just about

every five minutes the phone rings or a bell announces an incoming message; it is probably someone who is looking for a particular diamond, looking for advice, or it is a purchasing party who wants to discuss rough stones. The world of diamond trading never sleeps.

Steve has been working at Gassan for nearly thirty years and he is mainly concerned

Steve Bierman werkt al bijna dertig jaar bij Gassan Diamonds, waar hij zich vooral bezighoudt met de inkoop van diamanten. Diamanten zitten Steve in het bloed, het is hem met de paplepel ingegoten. Steve is immers een telg van de gerenommeerde diamantairsfamilie Van Moppes, met grootvader Herman als boegbeeld. De kleine Steve bracht elk vrij moment werkend door, ofwel in de textielzaak van z’n vader of in de diamantfabriek van opa in Amsterdam. Maar uiteindelijk zou de textielzaak het onderspit moeten delven voor de diamanten. En opa Van Moppes wond er geen doekjes om; wie in de diamanten wilde stappen, moest het vak van onder tot boven kennen en bovenal, hard werken.

in Steve’s blood. Steve is a member of the Van Moppes family, a well-known family in the industry, with his grandfather Herman as the founder of their diamond business. When he was a little boy, Steve already spent every spare moment working in his father’s textile industry or his grandfather’s diamond factory in Amsterdam. But ultimately, Bierman chose to work in the diamond industry. Grandfather Van Moppes taught him: if he wanted to join the family’s diamond business, he needed to know everything about it and work hard.

Toen hij de schoolbanken had verlaten, als jonge knaap van 18, koos Steve er dan ook resoluut voor om in de voetsporen van zijn grootvader te treden.

Hij nam zijn intrek boven een café in het onooglijke dorpje Itegem, in de buurt van de fabriek in het hart van het Vlaamse Kempen, toen nog het mekka van de wereldwijde diamantnijverheid. Een rariteit, want 35 jaar geleden waren ‘de Hollanders’ in Vlaanderen nog behoorlijk dun gezaaid.

After he left school, when he was 18 years old Steve decided to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather. He moved to an apartment above a pub in the village of Itegem. It was near the factory in the middle of the Flemish village Kempen, which was then the Mecca of the global diamond industry.

snijden, tekenen, zagen: het échte slijpersvak. En ’s avonds stond ‘den Hollander’ achter de toog in het café, tot groot vermaak van de lokale stamgasten. De zesde dag van de week was voorbehouden voor ‘het kantoor’, waar Steve ook leerde sorteren, waarde bepalen enzovoorts. Wie fouten maakte, werd door opa letterlijk op de vingers getikt. Het diamantvak is niet voor niets een ambacht waar precisie en perfectie dé norm zijn. Die passie voor perfectie én voor het product vormt dan ook de rode draad in het verhaal van Steve.

Five days a week, Steve worked in the diamond factory, where he learned cutting, drawing and polishing: the real craft of diamond cutting. At night ‘The Dutchmen’ was working behind the counter in the café under his apartment, to the delight of the regulars of the pub. The sixth day of the week was reserved for 'office work'

Steve werkte een tijdje voor zichzelf als zelfstandig fabrikant en was van plan om in de juwelenindustrie te stappen, maar een opportuniteit om bij Gassan aan de slag te gaan, bood zich aan. Topman Benno Leeser was op zoek naar een nieuwe inkoper, een job dicht bij het product diamant zelf en een baan waarbij Steve zich als een vis in het water voelt.

Steve Bierman kijkt tevreden terug op zijn beslissing om voor Gassan te gaan werken. In de afgelopen 28 jaar bij de Nederlandse topjuwelier kan hij als inkoper en expert het succesverhaal van Gassan verder uitbouwen.

De groep groeit uit tot een bloeiend bedrijf en heeft vandaag de dag verschillende vestigingen in Amsterdam, op Schiphol en op Singapore Changi Airport.

En een goed draaiend bedrijf is ook goed voor de creativiteit. Een jaar of dertien geleden, nota bene tijdens een hardloopsessie, krijgt Steve een even ambitieuze als geniale inval; hij wil een eigen slijpvorm creëren die Gassan letterlijk en figuurlijk meer kan doen schitteren. Een ‘signature’ diamant die de vertaling kan zijn van de waarden waar Gassan voor staat; perfectie, kwaliteit en een smetteloze service waarin vertrouwen centraal staat.

Steve Bierman started out as an independent manufacturer and was planning to step into the jewellery industry by himself, but when he was offered a job at Gassan he immediately agreed. Gassan’s CEO Benno Leeser was looking for a new buyer, a job close to the diamond product itself and perfect for Steve.

After 28 years, Steve is still very content with his decision to work for Gassan. As a buyer and expert he can help expanding the success of Gassan. The Gassan Group grew into a thriving business and now has several

TECHNISCHE HOOGSTANDJES Bij de bewondering of aankoop van auto’s en horloges vinden mannen het vakmanschap, de detaillering, de uiterlijke verschijning en de mogelijkheden het belangrijkst. De technieken van horloges en auto’s zijn vergelijkbaar. Er zijn eenvoudige maar ook ingewikkelde modellen, zoals de tourbillon of perpetual calendar. Als ik uitleg geef over horloges vergelijk ik ze vaak met auto’s. Een mechanisch uurwerk in een horloge is net een viercilinder die in de meeste auto’s zitten. Een tourbillon kan worden vergeleken met een twaalfcilinder high-end en high-power motor.

Dit maakt de uitleg gemakkelijker en begrijpelijker.

Er zijn een paar prachtige auto- en horlogemerken die goed weten waar hun kracht ligt, zoals Rolex en Porsche. Zij staan voor kwaliteit, zijn waardevast en hebben een ongelooflijke fanbase. Ze doen niet mee met trends, maar gaan uit van hun eigen kracht en blijven trouw aan hun concept. En dat is de sleutel tot hun succes.

Kijk maar naar een Rolex Submariner of een Porsche 911. Als je een van de eerste Porsche-modellen uit de jaren ’60 naast een exemplaar uit 2015 zet, zijn ze voor 95% hetzelfde. Er is niet veel veranderd, op wat enkele details en technologieën na. Zo is dat ook bij Rolex, de Submariner van toen en de Submariner van nu zijn tevens voor zo’n 95% hetzelfde.

SAMENWERKINGEN Maar er zijn ook merken die de link leggen tussen horloges en auto’s en samenwerkingen aangaan. Veel horlogemerken hebben iets met autosport en de coureurs uit de Formule 1 zoals Rubens Barrichello, Felipe Massa, Michael Schumacher en regerend kampioen Lewis Hamilton. Daar ontstaan vruchtbare samenwerkingen.

Audemars Piguet heeft horloges gemaakt ter ere van Formule 1-coureurs Montoya, Barrichello en Schumacher en Richard Mille maakte een uurwerk als eerbetoon aan Massa. Tag Heuer had een langdurig contract met Lewis Hamilton en in 1994 lanceerde het merk kort na het overlijden van Formule 1-icoon Ayrton Senna da Silva een horloge ter ere van hem.

Een paar maanden geleden bracht het merk vier nieuwe modellen uit als eerbetoon aan de coureur die overleed tijdens de Grand Prix van San Marino.

Ook op het gebied van sponsoring doen de horloge- en auto-industrie veel samen. Zo is Rolex de hoofdsponsor van de Formule 1, sponsort IWC het Formule 1-team van Mercedes en sponsoren ook merken als Oris en TW Steel de hoogste klasse in de autosport.

En dan zijn er nog merken, zoals Porsche die het groter aan willen pakken en een eigen collectie uitbrengen. De Porsche horlogelijn van IWC die jaren geleden werd geïntroduceerd, was direct een groot succes.

De eigenaar van Porsche zag markt in de horlogerie. Hij kocht het horlogemerk Eterna en bracht een hele collectie Porsche horloges op de markt. De Duitse autobouwer is het enige autobedrijf dat zich op zo’n grote schaal heeft gewaagd aan het maken van horloges. Het werd niet het succes waar op werd gehoopt en al gauw verdween het merk naar de achtergrond.

Ferrari heeft het ook geprobeerd en heeft samengewerkt met horlogemerken Girard-Perregaux en Panerai. Maar ook dat was zonder echte successen. Het Italiaanse merk heeft inmiddels wel haar eigen horlogelijn. De uurwerken behoren tot het middensegment fashionmerken en Gassan verkoopt dit merk met succes op Schiphol Airport.”

TECHNICAL HIGHLIGHTS When they admire or purchase cars and watches, most men think craftsmanship, detailing, the appearance and capabilities are most important. The techniques of watches and cars are similar. There are simple but also complex models, such as the tourbillon and perpetual calendar. When I talk to our clients about watches, I often compare them with cars. A mechanical timepiece in a watch is like a four-cylinder that most cars have. A tourbillon can be compared with a twelvecylinder high-end and high-power motor. This will make the explanation easier and more understandable.

There are some beautiful car and watch brands that know their own strength, such as Rolex and Porsche. They don’t follow trends, but remain faithful to their concept. And that's the key to their success. Just look at a Rolex Submariner or a Porsche 911. If you compare one of the first Porsche models or a Submariner by Rolex made in the sixties with one that has been made in 2015, you will notice they are almost the same. Not much has changed, except for maybe some details and technologies.

COLLABORATIONS Some brands turn these similarities between watches and cars into partnerships. Many watch brands are interested in motor racing and successful collaborations are formed.

Audemars Piguet has created watches to honour Formula 1 drivers Montoya, Barrichello and Schumacher and Richard Mille made a timepiece to pay tribute to Massa. Tag Heuer had a long-term contract with reigning champion Hamilton and in 1994 the brand launched a watch in honour of Formula 1 icon Ayrton Senna da Silva, shortly after his death.

In the field of sponsorship the watchmaking and automotive branches also work together.

Rolex is the main sponsor of the Formula 1, IWC sponsors Mercedes’ F1 team and brands like Oris and TW Steel sponsor the premier class in motorsport.

And then there are also brands like Porsche who want to release their own collection of watches. Years ago, IWC had a line of Porsche watches and it was an instant success. The owner of Porsche saw potential in watchmaking. He bought the watch brand Eterna and launched an entire collection of Porsche watches, but it was not the success the company hoped for. Ferrari has also tried to release watches and has worked with watch brands Girard-Perregaux and Panerai.

But that also didn’t turn out to be a great success. The Italian brand already has its own watch line in the middle segment of fashion brands, which Gassan successfully sells at Schiphol Airport.”

Nu het hartje winter is, zien we veel winterse tinten. Brique-rode tinten of zwart in combinatie met goud. Chique, luxueus en sensueel. Ook grafische ringen zijn enorm populair. Het Italiaanse merk Al Coro heeft bijvoorbeeld een nieuwe lijn, de Neraviglia-collectie met sierlijke ringen van zwart staal, 18 karaats goud en briljanten. Al Coro’s Gold Cage ringen passen ook perfect bij de winter, er ligt bij deze ringen een ajour laag van goud over het zwarte keramiek. Warm en donker in combinatie met cool en licht.

Onconventionele materialen zoals staal, maar ook titanium en keramiek zie ik dit seizoen wederom in veel collecties terugkomen. Net als een statementring om de wijsvinger. De zwarte keramische Classic 1818 ring en de Classic 1818 Ajour ring van Choices by DL worden bij uitstek gedragen om de wijsvinger.

The Classic 1818 Ajour ring fits perfectly into the current baroque trend. In fashion we see a lot of velvet fabrics and lace structures that provide a rich feeling, like we saw for example at Gucci’s latest fashion show. The jewellery houses are also inspired by this baroque trend. You will find baroque and ajour jewellery items at page 108.

In the Netherlands more people are getting engaged and married again, often in a traditional way. The couples usually choose a solitaire engagement ring and an alliance wedding ring. A great choice; the continuous stones all around an alliance ring symbolize a

De Classic 1818 Ajour ring past ook perfect in de baroktrend die momenteel heerst. We zagen veel fluwelen stoffen en opengewerkte structuren die een rijk gevoel geven onder andere al voorbij komen op de catwalk van Gucci. En ook de juwelenwereld gaat overstag. Op pagina 108 vindt u een shopping overzicht met meerdere ajour en barokstukken.

Ik merk om me heen dat er in Nederland weer meer traditioneel verloofd en getrouwd wordt. Er wordt vaak net zoals vroeger, voor een solitaire verlovingsring en een alliance trouwring gekozen. En niet voor niets: de rondom doorlopende stenen van een alliance ring staan symbool voor een ‘never ending love story’. Gassan heeft een enorme keuze aan de mooiste verlovings- en trouwringen.

Voor iedereen hebben we de perfecte match! Een solitair verlovingsring hoeft namelijk geen grote steen te hebben om mooi te schitteren. Dieren zijn momenteel een belangrijk thema en in onze winkel op de PC Hooftstraat verkopen we sinds kort de stukken van juwelenontwerpster Bibi van der Velden. In haar Forbidden Fruits-collectie speelt de slang een hoofdrol en op pagina 64 vertelt Bibi van der Velden over haar collectie en werkwijze.

De Nederlandse juwelenontwerpster en beeldhouwster Bibi van der Velden maakt spectaculaire draagbare kunst. Ze is geboren in New York, groeide op in Engeland en verhuisde op haar negende terug naar Nederland, waar ze haar juwelenmerk start en groot maakt. HOE BELANGRIJK ZIJN JUWELEN? “Juwelen zijn heel persoonlijk en markeren milestones in iemands leven. Ik zie ze niet alleen als iets esthetisch, het zijn herinneringen en vertellen een verhaal over het leven van de drager.”

sculptor Bibi van der Velden creates spectacular wearable art. She was born in New York, grew up in England and moved to the Netherlands at the age of nine, where she founded her jewellery brand. WELKE SIERADEN DRAAG JE ZELF? “Ik heb veel sieraden en alles wat ik draag heeft een betekenis. Ik draag elke dag de trouwring van mijn overleden vader, mijn eigen trouwring en de ringen die ik kreeg na de geboortes van mijn kinderen Charlie en Balthazar. De ketting met hangers met de namen van mijn ouders heb ik ook om, net als de kettingen met de namen van mijn kinderen. Daarnaast draag ik altijd een groot statement stuk dat ik samen met wat andere ringen en sieraden in de ochtend uitkies.

Ik ga ook nooit de deur uit zonder een slangenarmband om mijn pols. Als klein meisje was ik erg bang voor slangen. Mijn moeder gaf me een slangenarmband, zodat ik net als een slangenbezweerder geen angst meer hoefde te hebben voor ze. Tegenwoordig heb ik elke dag de wikkelarmband uit mijn Forbidden Fruitcollectie om die ik baseerde op mijn slangensieraad van vroeger.

“Jewellery is very personal, they mark milestones in one’s life. I don’t just see them as something aesthetic, they are memories and tell a story about the life of the one who wears it.”

What kind of jewellery do you wear yourself?

“I have a lot of jewellery and everything I wear has a meaning. The wedding ring of my deceased father, my own wedding ring and the rings I got after the births of my children Charlie and Balthazar are jewels I wear every day.

I never leave the house without a snake bracelet around my wrist. As a little girl I was very afraid of snakes. My mother gave me a snake bracelet, so I would be like a snake charmer and should not have to be scared of them anymore. Nowadays I always wear the wrap bracelet from my Forbidden Fruit collection, which is based on the snake

DRAAG JE EEN HORLOGE? “Ja, een Rolex die van mijn vader is geweest. Hij kocht het op zijn eenentwintigste toen hij bij de marine zat. Als kind vond ik het uurwerk erg mooi en toen mijn vader later hetzelfde model vond, gaf hij dat aan mij. Helaas ben ik in Argentinië van dat horloge beroofd.

Na het overlijden van mijn vader heb ik zijn horloge geërfd, ik vind het heel bijzonder dat ik nu mag dragen wat hij zo’n lange tijd om heeft gehad.” >

Do you wear a watch?

“Yes, a Rolex that belonged to my father.

How did you become a jewellery designer?

“My mother Michelle is a sculptor and so at a young age I already knew

Al sinds ik me kan herinneren, verzamel ik stenen, schelpen en kristallen en na de opleiding tot beeldhouwer in Florence, lag het maken van sieraden voor de hand. Ik zie het ontwerpen van juwelen ook als een verlengde van beeldhouwen. Mijn stukken zijn minisculpturen die op zichzelf al kleine kunstwerkjes zijn. Na mijn eerste show tijdens de Amsterdam Fashion Week in 2005 is mijn juwelenmerk een echte business geworden dat ik beetje bij beetje uitbouw.”

After my training as a sculptess in Florence, it seemed like creating jewellery was the right thing for me to do. I think designing jewellery is an extension of sculpting. My pieces are miniature sculptures and little pieces of art itself. After my first show during the Amsterdam Fashion Week in 2005 my jewellery brand has become a real

What is the typical Bibi van der Velden signature?

“I love a nostalgic feeling and imperfect materials and objects, such as broken stones and gnarled pearls. I try to downplay diamonds; I don’t want them to be perfectly polished. My items are conversation pieces; you can tell something about it or do something with it. Like for example the ring from the

How do you get inspired?

“I’m like a beachcomber, I always have my eyes fixed on the ground and will

Als ik op reis ben, lijkt het alsof mijn sensoren beter werken en ik meer opensta voor mooie dingen. Een periode in een andere omgeving is voor mij vaak het beginpunt van een nieuwe collectie.”

DE FORBIDDEN FRUIT-COLLECTIE HEB JIJ IN SAMENWERKING MET JUWELENHUIS STELTMAN GEMAAKT. HOE IS DIE SAMENWERKING TOT STAND GEKOMEN? “Ik heb al een aantal jaren een leuke klik met het juwelenhuis Steltman en de managing director Fred Brom. Een paar jaar geleden besloten we om samen te gaan werken. Steltman liet me helemaal vrij, maar omdat het een klassiek juwelenhuis is, wilde ik passende stukken maken. De slang staat centraal in de collectie. Sommige items zijn zichtbaar geïnspireerd op de mooie mysterieuze beesten, maar er zijn ook stukken waar de slang abstract en heel subtiel in terugkomt.”

It seems like my sensors work better when I’m traveling, I am more open for beautiful things. For me, a period in a different environment is often the starting point of a new collection.”

You created the Forbidden Fruit Collection

“I have known jewellery house Steltman and its managing director Fred Brom for a while. A few years ago we decided to work together.

Steltman told me I could make anything I liked. But because it is a classic jewellery house, I wanted to make matching

What can we expect from you in the near future?

De aanvulling is iets funkier dan wat er nu in de collectie zit. Ik heb met verschillende kleuren gewerkt voor een rainbow effect en de kettingen kunnen mooi worden gelayerd.”

“The Forbidden Fruit Collection that is now available at Gassan will be extended and the first pieces will be on sale from the end of this year. The addition is a little funkier than what we have in the collection right now. I have worked with different colours for a rainbow effect and the necklaces can be layered beautifully.”

De Stichting Max Havelaar is een keurmerk voor Fairtrade producten en helpt kleine producenten in ontwikkelingslanden een betere plek te verwerven in de handelsketen, zodat ze kunnen leven van hun werk en kunnen investeren in een duurzame toekomst.

De stichting houdt zich ook bezig met eerlijk goud en dat is hard nodig. Tachtig procent van het goud wordt nu nog gewonnen via grootschalige mijnbouw, waarbij giftige stoffen zoals cyanide en kwik worden gebruikt. Deze giftige stoffen lekken weg naar de rivieren, de zee en in de grond. Als al het goud is gewonnen en de goudmijn is uitput, blijven de bewoners achter met een ernstig vervuilde leefomgeving.

Het werk is niet alleen zwaar en ongezond voor de 13 miljoen gouddelvers die wereldwijd met kwik werken, ze krijgen ook geen eerlijke prijs voor hun goud.

EERLIJK GOUD Stichting Max Havelaar brengt daar verandering in met het keurmerk. Ze stelt strenge eisen aan de mijnen op het gebied van veiligheid, arbeidsomstandigheden, inkomen en milieu. De mijnwerkers krijgen een goede, marktconforme prijs voor hun goud en worden begeleid in het veilig werken in de mijnen en het op een veilige manier verwerken van het goud.

Mijnwerkers die Fairtrade goud winnen, ontvangen een minimumprijs en een vaste premie van 2000 dollar per kilo, waarvan ze een deel investeren in hun gemeenschap. Ook Gassan Diamonds is overtuigd van het belang van eerlijk goud en stapt voor de in Nederland geproduceerde eigen collectie over op Fairtrade goud.

“We moeten bij de bron beginnen om mensen de kans te bieden een goed bestaan op te bouwen,” zegt directeur Benno Leeser. Op dit moment wordt er hard gewerkt aan de ontwikkeling van de Fairtrade collectie van Gassan.

When all the gold is mined and the gold mine is empty, the residents are left with a severely polluted environment.

The work is not just tough and unhealthy for the 13 million gold miners worldwide who work with mercury, they also don’t get a fair price for their gold.

HONEST GOLD The Max Havelaar Foundation changes all that with the Fairtrade certification mark. It sets strict requirements for the mines in the area of safety, working conditions, income and environment. The miners receive an honest market price for their gold and are guided in working safely in the mines and safely processing the gold.

KENIA Jeannette Heessels: “Een bezoek aan de goudmijn in Migori in Kenia staat als eerste op de planning. Vijf maanden geleden begon de plaatselijke gemeenschap van ongeveer 20 mijnwerkers met de bouw van de mijn. De mijnschacht komt nog niet uit op de goudader en is nu niet meer dan een vierkant gat in de grond met zelfgemaakte houten ladders. Er moet nog dieper gegraven worden en de verwachting is dat over ongeveer twee maanden bij de goudader wordt aangekomen.

Dan zal de actieve goudwinning van start gaan en kan er geld worden verdiend.

Tot die tijd is er nog nauwelijks inkomen uit de goudmijn. De mijnwerkers werken drie dagen per week hier en de overige dagen gaan ze aan de slag bij andere mijnen om geld te verdienen voor hun levensonderhoud.

De eigenaar van de grond waar de mijn op ligt, krijgt een deel van de goudopbrengst. De rest van de opbrengst is voor de mijnwerkers en de gemeenschap en een klein deel wordt gereserveerd voor noodzakelijke investeringen en onderhoud aan de mijn.

TANZANIA We brengen ook een bezoek aan de mijnen in Geita in Tanzania. Deze worden al langer geëxploiteerd en hier verloopt het werk dan ook een stuk gestructureerder dan in Kenia. De mijn in Tanzania bestaat uit drie schachten. Een van de schachten is 80 meter diep en komt uit op de goudader. De twee andere mijnschachten moeten nog dieper uitgegraven worden om ook op de goudader uit te komen. >

Jeannette Heessels visited the mines in Kenya and Tanzania earlier this year to see how the mines are built and see the benefits of honest gold.

KENYA Jeannette Heessels: "We first visit the gold mine in Migori in Kenya. Five months ago the local community of about 20 miners began the construction of the mine. The mineshaft has not yet reached the gold vein and is now no more than a square hole in the ground with wooden ladders.

It needs to be dug deeper and is expected to arrive at the gold vein in about two months. Then the active gold mining can start and money can be earned. Until then, there is hardly any income from the gold mine. The miners work three days a week here and the other days they go on to work at other mines to earn money. The owner of the land where

Deze mijnschacht is net als die in Kenia, niet meer dan een vierkant gat in de grond, maar hier zijn de wanden voorzien van balken om instortingen te voorkomen.

TRADITIONELE WERKWIJZE Het goud zit als dunne sporen in het gesteente dat uit de mijn naar boven wordt gehaald. Dat gesteente moet vergruisd worden en als de brokken steen verpulverd zijn, wordt de overgebleven massa vermengd met water en over een schuin geplaatste goot geleid. De goot is bekleed met katoenen handdoeken. De gouddeeltjes zijn zwaarder dan vermalen steen en blijven op de katoenen handdoeken achter. De handdoeken met de gouddeeltjes worden daarna uitgespoeld in een grote ton die gevuld is met water.

En dat is het laten oplossen in het giftige kwik. Ze doen een kleine hoeveelheid kwik in een platte schaal die verder gevuld wordt met het water waar de minuscule gouddeeltjes in zitten. Door het water te roeren met de hand zal het kwik de zwevende gouddeeltjes uit het water opnemen. Na lang roeren blijft er een klein plasje vloeibare kwik over met een hoge concentratie fijngoud.

Om het pure goud weer te scheiden van het kwik moet het mengsel worden verhit, waarna het kwik verdampt en neerslaat in het water. Het goud, vermengd met wat andere (edele)metalen en smeltafval blijft over.

FAIRTRADE REGELS Deze traditionele manier van goudwinning wordt van generatie op generatie overgedragen, maar er zijn veel schadelijke gevolgen aan het werken met zware metalen zoals kwik. Stichting Max Havelaar stelt strenge eisen op het gebied van veiligheid, arbeidsomstandigheden en milieu.

De stichting begeleidt mijnwerkers om veilig te werken en heeft regels opgesteld waaraan mijnwerkers zich moeten houden om te mogen werken onder het Fairtrade-label. Eén van deze regels is het beschermen van mens en natuur tegen giftige stoffen.

Mijnwerkers die de Fairtrade-regels in acht nemen, werken met de juiste gereedschappen en beschermende uitrusting. Zo dragen ze rubberen laarzen en handschoenen, om beter beschermd te zijn. Daarnaast wordt hen onder andere geleerd hoe ze de mijnschachten veilig kunnen stutten zodat er geen instortingsgevaar is.”

TANZANIA We also pay a visit to the mine in Geita in Tanzania.

These have been exploited a bit longer and therefore the work here is a lot more structured than in Kenya.

The mine in Tanzania has three shafts. One of the shafts is 80 meters deep and reaches the gold vein.

The two other mineshafts need to be dug deeper in order to reach on the gold vein. These mineshafts are like the one in Kenya, no more than a square hole in the ground, but here the walls are provided with beams in order to prevent cave-ins.

TRADITIONAL METHOD The gold is found as thin traces in the rocks that are extracted from the mine. Those stones need to be crushed and pulverized and the remaining mass will be mixed with water and passed over an inclined chute. The chute is covered with cotton towels.

The gold particles are heavier than crushed stone and stay on the cotton towels. The towels with the gold particles are then rinsed in a large barrel filled with water. For small-scale miners there is only one way to filter these tiny gold particles from the water.

And that's to dissolve it in toxic mercury. They put a small amount of mercury in a flat dish, which is also filled with the water with the tiny gold particles. By stirring the water with their hands, the mercury will take up the floating gold particles from the water. After much stirring, a small puddle of liquid mercury with a high concentration of fine gold will be left. In order to separate the mercury from the pure gold again, the mixture must be heated, after which the mercury evaporates and precipitates in the water. The gold, mixed with some other (precious) metals and melting waste remains.

FAIRTRADE GUIDELINES This traditional method of extracting gold is passed on from generation to generation, but there are many harmful effects on working with heavy metals like mercury. The Max Havelaar Foundation sets strict requirements in terms of safety, working conditions and environment. The foundation assists miners to work safely and has established guidelines for miners to work under the Fairtrade label. One of these rules is to protect people and nature from toxic substances.

Miners that follow the Fairtrade guidelines work with the appropriate tools and protective equipment.

They wear rubber boots and gloves to be protected and they are also being taught how to support the mineshafts safely, so there is no danger of collapsing."

Diamantslijpen is een fysiek zware baan en vraagt veel van het lichaam, het wordt dan ook voornamelijk gedaan door mannen. Toch zijn er uitzonderingen; bij Gassan Diamonds werken zeven mannen en drie vrouwen op de historische diamantslijperij. Marie-Louise Bartels en Barbara Otten vertellen over hun werk tussen de mannen.

MARIE-LOUISE BARTELS Marie-Louise Bartels, sinds 1995 werkzaam bij Gassan Diamonds en sinds 1997 manager van de diamantslijperij.

“Diamantslijpen wordt gezien als een zwaar mannenberoep, maar vrouwen zijn altijd belangrijk geweest voor de ambachtelijke precisieklus.

Vroeger werden de schijven aangeduwd door vrouwen en later waren de vrouwelijke slijpers verantwoordelijk voor het perfectioneren van de fijne kleine facetten van de briljanten, terwijl mannen het voorbewerken en grovere werk deden.

Toen ik klaar was met de studie goud- en zilversmid startten de gezamenlijke Amsterdamse diamantslijperijen een opleiding voor slijpers omdat het vak dreigde uit te sterven. Dat leek mij een mooie aanvulling en ik schreef me direct in.

Van mijn dertien klasgenoten waren er vier vrouw, maar wij leerden allemaal alle aspecten van het vak te beheersen.

Bij Gassan Diamonds doen alle slijpers hetzelfde werk. Wij doen allemaal de zware en fijne klussen en slijpen de facetten op de diamanten tot een excellent resultaat. Ik vind mijn werk geweldig.

De weg van het slijpen van een ruwe diamant naar een geslepen sieraad heeft elke keer iets betoverends. Geen dag is hetzelfde.”

"Most people think diamond cutting is heavy and a typical male profession, but women have always been important to the precise craft. Previously, the disks were pushed by women and a few years later female polishers were responsible for perfecting the delicate small facets of the diamonds, while men did the heavy work. When I finished my study gold- and silversmithing, the diamond factories in Amsterdam joined forces and started a training for diamond cutters because the profession was threatened with extinction. I thought it was a nice addition to my education and I signed up immediately. I had thirteen classmates and only four of them were women, but we all learned to master all aspects of the trade. At Gassan Diamonds all cutters do the same work.

We do all the heavy and delicate jobs and cut the facets on the diamonds to an excellent result.

I love my job. Cutting a rough diamond into a polished faceted jewel has something magical.

BARBARA OTTEN Barbara Otten, sinds 1989 werkzaam bij Gassan Diamonds als diamantslijper.

“Ik vind het fascinerend om heel nauwkeurig en geduldig iets moois te maken. Na de middelbare school wilde ik kristalbeelden van Swarovski leren slijpen in Oostenrijk. Een leraar vertelde dat er in Amsterdam een vakopleiding voor volwassenen was om het slijpen en bewerken van diamanten te leren. Ik schreef me in en was direct verkocht aan het vak. Bij Gassan Diamonds vond ik mijn droombaan, want ik kan de hele dag bezig zijn met precisie, glitter en glamour.

Er worden jaarlijks zo’n 400.000 rondleidingen gegeven door onze slijperij. Ik kan niet horen en geef zelf ook wel eens rondleidingen in gebarentaal aan doven en slechthorenden. En dan merk ik pas goed hoe speciaal de bezoekers het vinden dat er een vrouw als diamantslijper werkt. Ze maken foto’s van ons en stellen vragen aan me. De schoonheid van edelstenen is betoverend. Ik zie het elke keer weer terug in de glimlach van klanten wanneer ze de diamanten zien of iets kopen.”

"I think it is fascinating to make a beautiful faceted diamond with a lot of accuracy and patience.

After high school, I wanted to learn how to make Swarovski’s crystal sculptures in Austria.

A teacher told me that there was also a class to learn how to sculpt and cut diamonds, here in Amsterdam. I signed up and was instantly hooked on the profession. At Gassan Diamonds I found my dream job because I can spend the entire day working on precision, glitter and glamour. There is a tour through the world of diamonds at Gassan and the guests also visit our diamond factory.

Since I am deaf I sometimes guide tours in sign language for the hearing impaired. At those times I truly notice and realize how special visitors think it is for a woman to be working as a diamond cutter.

They take pictures of us and ask me all kinds of questions about my job. The beauty of gemstones is enchanting. I can see it every time in the smile of our visitors when they see the diamonds or buy something."

2015 is een belangrijk jaar voor het Van Gogh Museum. Op 29 juli was het precies 125 jaar geleden dat schilder Vincent van Gogh overleed. Om dat te herdenken wordt dit jaar in Nederland, maar ook in België, Frankrijk en Engeland gevierd dat de kunstschilder al 125 jaar mensen over de hele wereld inspireert. Gassan Diamonds viert mee en eert Vincent van Gogh met drie juwelencollecties en een exclusief horloge.

Terwijl Vincent van Gogh tegenwoordig een van de meest beroemde kunstenaars ter wereld is, werd zijn talent tijdens zijn leven nauwelijks gewaardeerd. Na zijn overlijden werd pas ingezien wat voor mooie dingen hij maakte en lieten veel kunstenaars zich inspireren door de Nederlandse kunstschilder.

Om te vieren dat Vincent 125 jaar inspireert, worden er in Europa verschillende tentoonstellingen en evenementen rondom het thema ‘125 jaar inspiratie’ georganiseerd en zijn er bijzondere samenwerkingen. Gassan Diamonds brengt drie speciale juwelencollecties uit en komt in samenwerking met JaegerLeCoultre met een gelimiteerde editie van het Reverso à Eclipse uurwerk met Van Goghs’s Zonnebloemen op de wijzerplaat.

“VINCENT WAS GEEN GEK DIE ZOMAAR WAT VERF OP EEN DOEK SMEET” DE JUWELENCOLLECTIES Om de bezoekers van het Van Gogh Museum de kans te geven om naast de reguliere souvenirs ook hoogwaardige Van Gogh-producten aan te kunnen schaffen, zijn er luxe items aan de museumwinkel toegevoegd. Samen met Gassan ontwierp het museum juwelencollecties aan de hand van drie bekende werken van Vincent van Gogh: Zonnebloemen, Amandelbloesem en Irissen.

De collecties bevatten onder andere ringen, oorbellen, armbanden en colliers.

Alle juwelen zijn gemaakt van 14 karaats goud en bezet met diamanten en /of kleurstenen.

De juwelen zijn te koop in de luxe boetiek in de nieuwe entree van het Van Gogh Museum aan het Museumplein, bij de Gassan vestigingen en op de website van Gassan.

HET HORLOGE Ook Jaeger-LeCoultre eert de kunstenaar. In samenwerking met het museum en Gassan ontwierp het befaamde horlogemerk een limited edition handbeschilderd uurwerk, het Reverso à Eclipse. Directeur Axel Rüger van het Van Gogh Museum wilde iets bijzonders creëren ter gelegenheid van de opening van de nieuwe entree van het museum en het thema ‘125 jaar inspiratie’.

Gassans General Sales Manager Jacco Goossens bedacht dat het iconische Reverso à Eclipse horloge van Jaeger-LeCoultre en de schilderijen van Vincent van Gogh een mooie match zouden zijn. >

Nowadays Vincent van Gogh is one of the most famous artists in the world, but his talent was hardly appreciated during his lifetime. It was only after his death, people realized and respected the beautiful things he made and the Dutch painter has since inspired many artists.

To celebrate the fact that Vincent has been inspiring people from all over the world for 125 years, various exhibitions and events in Europe are being organized under the theme ‘125 years of inspiration’ and there are special collaborations. Gassan and the museum designed the jewellery collections by using three well-known works of Vincent van Gogh: Sunflowers, Almond Blossom and Irises.

The collection include rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces. All jewels are made of 14 carat gold and encrusted with diamonds and / or coloured stones.

The jewellery is for sale in the luxury boutique at the new entrance of the Van Gogh Museum at the Museumplein, the Gassan store and on the website of Gassan.

THE WATCH Jaeger-LeCoultre also honours the artist. In collaboration with the museum and Gassan the famous watch brand designed a hand painted limited edition watch, the Reverso à Eclipse. The museum’s director Axel Rüger wanted to create something special to celebrate the opening of the new entrance to the museum and the theme ‘125 years of inspiration’. Gassan’s General Sales Manager Jacco Goossens noted that the iconic Reverso à Eclipse watch from Jaeger-LeCoultre and the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh would be a perfect match. A M STERDAM U I T GE LICHT Het resultaat is een horloge met een draaimechanisme aan de zijkant, waardoor luikjes van de wijzerplaat kunnen worden geopend. Als de luikjes dicht zijn, is een normale wijzerplaat te zien en als ze geopend zijn, wordt er een bijzondere reproductie van een van Van Goghs bekendste werken getoond. De afbeelding op het unieke horloge is een geëmailleerde versie van het werk ‘Vaas met vijftien zonnebloemen’, dat Vincent een jaar voor zijn overlijden maakte en dat in het Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam hangt.

Het reproduceren van het schilderij op de wijzerplaat was een minutieuze klus, er werd geschilderd met een penseel met maar één haar en er is gemiddeld zo’n 600 uur aan één exemplaar gewerkt.

De horloges zijn verkrijgbaar voor € 75.000 per stuk en zijn in zeer gelimiteerd oplage van vijf exemplaren geproduceerd. Het horloge is te bewonderen in het Van Gogh Museum.

WAT SPREEKT U AAN IN DE SCHILDER VINCENT VAN GOGH? “Ik bewonder Vincent om zijn schilderijen en de enorme energie die zijn kunst uitstraalt. Vincent was geen gek die zomaar wat verf op een doek smeet. Hij was een zeer gedreven autodidact en heeft zich het schilderen eigen gemaakt. Nog steeds blijft hij inspireren, mensen over de hele wereld worden aangesproken door zijn vernieuwende kunst en zijn doorzettingsvermogen.”

MET ANDERHALF MILJOEN BEZOEKERS PER JAAR IS HET VAN GOGH MUSEUM EEN VAN DE MEEST BEZOCHTE MUSEA VAN ONS LAND. “We hebben een toplocatie, ik ben erg blij dat we samen met onze grote collega’s het Stedelijk Museum en het Rijksmuseum, maar ook het Koninklijk Concertgebouw aan het Museumplein in Amsterdam zitten. De plek is een sterke trekpleister en uniek in de wereld.

Een paar maanden geleden is onze nieuwe entree aan het Museumplein in gebruik genomen. Dat was hard nodig, de oude ingang aan de Paulus Potterstraat was niet gebouwd op het aantal bezoekers dat we inmiddels dagelijks mogen verwelkomen en was hopeloos overbelast. Door de nieuwe, met glas overkapte ingang is het museum niet alleen beter toegankelijk, we hebben ook ruim 800 vierkante meter meer ruimte en de nodige allure gekregen.”

WAAR STAAT 125 JAAR INSPIRATIE VOOR? “Op 29 juli 2015 was het exact 125 jaar geleden dat Vincent van Gogh overleed.

Wij hebben zijn sterfdag herdacht en vieren dit hele jaar dat zijn kunst al 125 jaar inspireert. Want Vincent werd pas echt gewaardeerd na zijn overlijden. Voor de tentoonstelling ‘When I Give, I Give Myself ’ hebben we 23 hedendaagse kunstenaars een brief van Vincent gegeven en zij antwoordden met een kunstwerk of een brief. Die antwoorden lopen als een eigentijdse route door de vaste collectie kunstwerken. Daarnaast hebben we de expositie Munch : Van Gogh waarin we de overeenkomsten van deze twee vaders van de moderne kunst laten zien. Ze hadden een soort zielsverwantschap en werkten met dezelfde thema’s, dat is mooi om te zien.”

Tentoonstellingen When I Give, I Give Myself en Munch : Van Gogh zijn tot en met 17 januari 2016 te bewonderen.

IN SAMENWERKING MET GASSAN ZIJN ER DRIE JUWELENCOLLECTIES ONTWIKKELD OM DE KUNSTENAAR TE EREN. “We merkten dat ons publiek naast de reguliere souvenirs ook graag een hoogwaardig item wilden kopen om hen te herinneren aan hun bezoek.

We wilden samenwerken met Gassan Diamonds, een echt Amsterdams familiebedrijf dat goed bij Van Gogh past. Want hoewel het Van Gogh Museum geen familiebedrijf is, is het wel opgericht op initiatief van de familie Van Gogh.

shutters covering the dial open up to reveal a beautiful reproduction of one of Van Gogh's most famous works. The image on the unique watch is a miniature enamelled version of the still life ‘Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers’, that Vincent made a year before his death, and can be seen in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

The reproduction of the painting on the dial was a meticulous job, it was painted with a brush with only one hair and it took an average of 600 hours to paint the dial of only one watch.

The watches are available for € 75,000 each and are produced in a very limited edition of five copies. The watch can be admired at the Van Gogh Museum.

What do you think of the painter Vincent van Gogh?

"I admire Vincent for his paintings and the enormous energy that shines through his art. Vincent wasn’t a madman who just threw some paint on a canvas. He was a very passionate autodidact and had mastered painting by himself. He still continues to inspire, people from over the world are inspired by his innovative art and his persistence."

With one and a half million visitors a year, the Van Gogh Museum is one of the most visited museums in our country.

"I am very pleased we are located on the Museumplein in Amsterdam together with our great colleagues, the Stedelijk Museum and the Rijksmuseum, as well as the Koninklijk Concertgebouw. It is a prime location, a strong attraction and unique in the world. A few months ago we opened our new entrance to the Museum, which was sorely needed. The old entrance at the Paulus Potterstraat wasn’t built for the amount of visitors we now welcome every day and it was hopelessly overloaded. The new glassroofed entrance to the museum is not just more accessible and has more allure, we now also have more than 800 square meters of extra space."

What does 125 years of inspiration stand for?

"On July 29 2015 it was exactly 125 years since Vincent van Gogh died.

This year we commemorated his death anniversary and celebrate that his art has been inspiring for 125 years, because Vincent was only appreciated after his death. For the exhibition 'When I Give, I Give Myself’ we gave 23 contemporary artists a letter from Vincent and they responded with a work of art or a letter.

Those responses run as a contemporary route of the permanent collection of

artworks. In addition, we also have the exhibition Munch : Van Gogh in which we show the similarities between these two fathers of modern art. They had a kind of congeniality and worked with the same themes."

When I Give, I Give Myself and Munch : Van Gogh are on display until January 17, 2016.

In collaboration with Gassan the museum created three jewellery collections to honour the artist.

"We noticed that our audience wanted to be able to buy high quality items to remind them of their visit to the museum.

We wanted to work with Gassan Diamonds; a true Amsterdam based family business that matches well with Van Gogh. Although the museum is not a family business, it is founded on the initiative of the Van Gogh family. Along with Gassan’s Debora Huisman-Leeser we launched a jewellery line inspired by three famous works by Van Gogh: Sunflowers, Irises and Almond Blossom.

The jewellery is for sale in the luxury boutique in the new entrance hall."

EN DAN IS ER OOK HET PRONKSTUK: HET HORLOGE VAN JAEGER-LECOULTRE. “Het gelimiteerde Reverso à Eclipse horloge van Jaeger-LeCoultre heeft op de wijzerplaat een afbeelding van één van Van Goghs beroemdste werken, de iconische Zonnebloemen. Vincent heeft meerdere schilderijen gemaakt van zonnebloemen, maar de afbeelding op het horloge is een geëmailleerde versie van het werk ‘Vaas met vijftien zonnebloemen’ dat hier in het museum hangt.

Door middel van een draaimechanisme aan de zijkant van de horlogekast kunnen de luikjes van de wijzerplaat worden geopend en wordt de uitzonderlijke reproductie van de Zonnebloemen onthuld. We zijn enorm trots dat we een exemplaar op een prominente plek en in een bijzondere vitrine in onze boetiek hebben.”

WAAROM IS HET MUSEUM EEN BEZOEK WAARD? “We hebben ruim tweehonderd schilderijen, vijfhonderd tekeningen en zevenhonderd brieven van Vincent van Gogh. En naast de vaste collectie hebben we steeds wisselende interessante tentoonstellingen. Bij het betreden van de ruimte naar onze vaste expositie hangen twaalf zelfportretten van Vincent.

U komt als het ware oog in oog te staan met de kunstenaar, een erg bijzondere binnenkomst.”

And then there is the showpiece: the watch by Jaeger- LeCoultre.

"The limited Reverso à Eclipse watch from Jaeger- LeCoultre has an image of one of Van Gogh's most famous works, the iconic Sunflowers, on the dial. Vincent has made several paintings of sunflowers, but the image on the watch is an enamelled version of the work "Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers" that we have here in the museum. Through a turning mechanism on the side of the watchcase, the shutters covering the dial can be opened and reveal the extraordinary Sunflowers reproduction.

We are very proud to have a copy of the watch in a prominent place and in a special display in our store."

Why is the museum worth a visit?

"We have over two hundred paintings, five hundred drawings and seven hundred letters of Vincent van Gogh.

And in addition to the permanent collection we have ever changing interesting exhibitions. When entering the room of our permanent exhibition, you will find twelve self-portraits of Vincent. It is as if you are face to face with the artist, a very special entry."

A MS T E R D AM TOP PE RS DE ZUIDERKERK Zuiderkerkhof 72 Het was de eerste kerk in Amsterdam die gebouwd werd voor de Protestantse eredienst. De Zuidertoren is niet zoals katholieke kerken op het oosten georiënteerd, maar gebouwd langs de Noord- Zuidas.

HUIS DE PINTO Sint Antoniesbreestraat 69 In de Sint Anthoniesbreestraat op nummer 69 staat het huis De Pinto.

Het pand werd gebouwd rond 1605.

Opdrachtgever was Jan Jansz. Carel één van de bewindvoerders van de in 1602 opgerichte Verenigde OostIndische Compagnie, de V.O.C. CAFE DE SLUYSWACHT Jodenbreestraat 1 Café de Sluyswacht werd in 1695 gebouwd als sluiswachterhuis aan de Sint Anthoniesluis. De sluiswachter bediende, controleerde en onderhield de sluis in dienst van de gemeente Amsterdam.

HET REMBRANDTHUIS Jodenbreestraat 4 De beroemde schilder Rembrandt was één van de niet-Joden die in deze buurt woonde. Hij woonde van 1639 tot 1658 in het huis naast wat nu café Rembrandt is, het huis met de mooie gevel en de vele luiken. Nu is dat het Museum Het Rembrandthuis.

HUISZITTEN HUIZEN Waterlooplein 211 Huiszitten huizen zijn de huizen van waaruit de bedeling aan 'huiszittende armen' plaatsvond. Dat zijn arme mensen die niet in een gasthuis of tehuis waren gehuisvest, maar nog in hun eigen huis woonden. Voedsel en turf werden aan hen uitgedeeld.

De drie bijbehorende pakhuizen uit 1610, rechts van het Huiszitten huis, dienden als opslagplaats voor de goederen.

DE DOKWERKER Jonas Daniël Meijerplein Op het Jonas Daniël Meijerplein staat de Dokwerker, een sculptuur van Mari Andriessen.

De Dokwerker is een herinnering aan de Februaristaking, onthuld door Koningin Juliana in 1952.

THEATER CARRE Amstel 115 /125 Circusdirecteur en ondernemer Oscar Carré opende in 1887 de deuren van zijn majestueuze theater aan de Amstel.

Daarvóór had hij een rondreizend circus, bekend om zijn fameuze

paardennummers. Oscar Carré kende de glitter en glamour, het applaus, maar ook de zakelijke kant van het theaterleven. Nadat hij triomfen vierde in heel Europa vestigde hij zich in Amsterdam. Het gezin Carré woonde in de bedrijfswoning waar nu de statige Loge Foyer is.

SYNAGOGEN COMPLEX Nieuwe Amstelstraat 1 “Drittsjoel”, de derde Synagoge uit 1700 en de “Obbenesjoel”, de tweede Synagoge uit 1686 en rechts daarvan de Nieuwe Synagoge uit 1752. “Sjoel” is Jiddisch en afgeleid van “Schule”.

PORTUGESE SYNAGOGE Jonas Daniël Meijerplein Deze verrees in de jaren 1671 tot 1675 circa 75 jaar na de komst van Spaanse en Portugese sefardische joden.

Stadsbouwmeester Elias Bouman leidde de bouw van de indertijd grootste synagoge ter wereld.

PARK WERTHEIM Plantage Middenlaan 1 Het park is genoemd naar Abraham Carel Wertheim. Wertheim behoorde tot de kringen van geëmancipeerde en geassimileerde joden in het 19e-eeuwse Amsterdam.

De twee sfinxen, die de ingang markeren zijn tijdens de jaren 1940-45 verdwenen, maar later vervangen door marmeren kopieën.

AUSCHWITZ MONUMENT Plantage Middenlaan 1, in park In januari 1952 organiseerde de Poolse regering voor het eerst een internationale herdenking van de bevrijding van Auschwitz. Uit een aantal landen werden overlevenden uitgenodigd deze herdenking bij te wonen.

Alle delegaties, waaronder de Nederlandse, vulden in Birkenau een urn met menselijke as om mee te nemen naar hun land. De urn die de Nederlandse delegatie mee terugbracht werd onder een gedenksteen begraven op de Nieuwe Oosterbegraafplaats in Amsterdam.

Daar werd jaarlijks op de laatste zondag in januari rond de bevrijdingsdatum van Auschwitz een herdenking georganiseerd.

DE PLANTAGE BUURT Amsterdam Centrum Oost Bij de stadsuitbreiding rond 1663 bleken voor dit gebied dat men de Plantage noemde niet genoeg kopers. De bouw stagneerde. Er werden tuinen en semi permanente uitspanningen aangelegd waar de Amsterdammers zich in het

groen konden verpozen.

Pas na 1860 raakte het gebied meer bebouwd en werd de Plantage de enige woonwijk binnen de Singelgracht met een 19e-eeuwse bebouwing. De Plantage wordt nog steeds gekenmerkt door een groen karakter.

DE KLEINE PLANTAGE Henri Polaklaan 12-B Dit kindercentrum, De Kleine Plantage, was vroeger het Portugees Israëlitisch Ziekenhuis. Het symbool van de Portugees Israëlitische gemeente staat nog op het gebouw, de pelikaan met 3 jongen.

DE PLANCIUS Plantage Kerklaan 61 Plancius werd in 1876 gebouwd als sociëteitsgebouw van de joodse zangvereniging ‘Oefening Baart Kunst’.

Op de gevel van dit neoclassicistische gebouw prijkt een davidster. Sinds 1 mei 1999 huist het Verzetsmuseum in Plancius.

DE HOLLANDSCHE SCHOUWBURG Plantage Middenlaan 24 Joden mochten vanaf 15 september 1941 niet meer naar restaurants, parken, cafés en schouwburgen. Ook mochten joden niet meer optreden in openbare gelegenheden.

Een maand later veranderden de nazi’s de naam van de Hollandsche Schouwburg in Joodsche Schouwburg.

Joodse artiesten, die niet meer voor nietjoods publiek mochten optreden, gaven nu voorstellingen en concerten voor een uitsluitend joods publiek in onder andere de Joodsche Schouwburg.

Midden 1942 wezen de Duitsers de schouwburg aan als verzamelplaats voor Joden die op het punt stonden gedeporteerd te worden en werd het een gevangenkamp.

Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog raakte de Hollandsche Schouwburg langzaam in verval. Jarenlang was niet duidelijk welke betekenis deze voormalige deportatieplaats nu eigenlijk had voor de stad Amsterdam. Inwoners wilde niet dat het terug een theater werd. In 1958 besloot de gemeente Amsterdam een monument op te richten voor de Joodse slachtoffers van het naziregime. De schouwburgzaal en het toneel werden afgebroken. Daarvoor kwam in de plaats een binnenhof, waar een obelisk werd opgericht met als voetstuk een liggende davidster. De muren rond de voormalige coulissen bleven deels bewaard en omsluiten de obelisk. Op de achterwand is de tekst ‘Ter herinnering aan hen, die van hier werden weggevoerd. 19401945’ te lezen. >

The Zuidertoren is not like Catholic churches oriented to the East, but built along the Noord-Zuidas.

HUIS DE PINTO Sint Antoniesbreestraat 69 In the St. Anthoniebreestraat at number 69 is the house De Pinto.

The building was built around 1605, commissioned by Jan Jansz. Carel, one of the executives of the Verenigde OostIndische Compagnie, de V.O.C. that was founded in 1602.

CAFE DE SLUYSWACHT Jodenbreestraat 1 Café de Sluyswacht was built in 1695 as a sluice keeper’s house for the Sint Anthonysluis. The sluice keeper operated, supervised and maintained the lock and was employed by the city of Amsterdam.

HET REMBRANDTHUIS Jodenbreestraat 4 The famous painter Rembrandt van Rijn was one of the non-Jews who lived in this neighbourhood. From 1639 to 1658 he lived in the house next to what is now Cafe Rembrandt, the house with the beautiful façade and the many shutters that is now known as Museum het Rembrandthuis.

HUISZITTEN HUIZEN Waterlooplein 211 Poor people who had a home but hardly any money would receive food and peat from the city. The three associated warehouses from 1610, on the right of the Huiszitten Huis, served as a warehouse for the goods.

DE DOKWERKER Jonas Daniël Meijerplein On the Jonas Daniël Meijer Square you can find De Dokwerker (docker), a sculpture of Mari Andriessen. De Dokwerker is a reminder of The February strike and was unveiled by Dutch Queen Juliana in 1952.

THEATER CARRE Amstel 115 /125 In 1887 ringmaster and entrepreneur Oscar Carré opened the doors to the majestic theatre at the Amstel. Before that, he had a traveling circus known for its famous horse shows. Oscar Carré knew the glitter and glamour, the applause, but also the business side of the entertainment life. After his triumphs in Europe, he decided to settle down in

Amsterdam. The Carré family lived in the house where you can now find the grand Loge Foyer.

SYNAGOGEN COMPLEX Nieuwe Amstelstraat 1 ‘Drittsjoel’, is the third synagogue that was built 1700 and the ‘Obbenesjoel’ is the second synagogue from 1686. To the right of these synagogues you can find the New Synagogue that was built in 1752. ‘Sjoel’ is a Yiddisch word derived from ‘Schule’.

PORTUGESE SYNAGOGE Jonas Daniël Meijerplein This was built in the years 1671 to 1675, around 75 years after the arrival of Spanish and Portuguese Sephardic Jews. City Architect Elias Bouman led the construction of the largest synagogue in the world at that time.

PARK WERTHEIM Plantage Middenlaan 1 The park is named after Abraham Carel Wertheim. Wertheim was part of the big group of emancipated and assimilated Jews in Amsterdam of the 19th century.

The two sphinxes, which marked the entrance, disappeared during the Second World War. The sphinxes were later replaced by marble copies.

AUSCHWITZ MONUMENT Plantage Middenlaan 1, in park In January 1952, seven years after the liberation of Auschwitz, the Polish government organised an international memorial. Delegations of Auschwitz survivors from various countries were invited to attend the international memorial. As part of the ceremony, each delegation -including the Dutch representatives- filled an urn with ashes, the only tangible reminder of the millions of people murdered in Auschwitz. The Dutch urn was placed under a small tombstone in the Amsterdam Ooster Cemetery. Every year, on the last Sunday in January there is a commemoration being held in honour of the liberation of Auschwitz at the cemetery.

DE PLANTAGE BUURT Amsterdam Centrum Oost During the urban expansion around 1663, it turned out there weren’t enough buyers for the new houses in this area named De Plantage. The construction stagnated. Gardens and parks were built for the residents of Amsterdam to relax in outside. After 1860 the area became more cultivated and the Plantage was the only residential area within the Singelgracht with 19th Century buildings. De Plantage is still known for

its green character.

DE KLEINE PLANTAGE Henri Polaklaan 12-B This day-care centre for children used to be a Portuguese Jewish Hospital. The symbol of the Portuguese Sephardic community, the pelican with three young can still be seen above the entrance of the building.

DE PLANCIUS Plantage Kerklaan 61 Plancius was built in 1876 as a civic building of Jewish choral society ‘Oefening Baart Kunst’. The facade of this neoclassical building is decorated with a Star of David. Nowadays Plancius houses the Dutch Resistance Museum.

DE HOLLANDSCHE SCHOUWBURG Plantage Middenlaan 24 On September 15 in 1941 Jews were no longer allowed in restaurants, parks, cafes and theatres. And they could no longer perform in public. A month later, the Nazis changed the name of the Dutch Theatre into Jew Theatre, a theatre just for Jews. Jewish artists, who couldn’t perform for non-Jewish audiences anymore, were only allowed to perform and give concerts for an exclusively Jewish audience.

In 1942 the Germans turned the theatre into a prison, a gathering place for Jews who were to be deported. After the Second World War, the theatre had lost its appeal and allure.

In 1958 the city of Amsterdam decided to turn it into a monument for the Jewish victims of the Nazi regime. The auditorium and stage were demolished and a courtyard was created, with an obelisk with a Star of David on it. The monument contains a memorial wall, bearing the 6,700 family names of the 104,000 Dutch Jewish victims of the Second World War. On the back of the wall it says ‘In memory of those who were deported from here. 1940-1945'.

ALS HOOFDREDACTEUR BEN JE ERG BELANGRIJK VOOR EEN BLAD, HOE WAS HET OM MET ZWANGERSCHAPSVERLOF TE GAAN? “We hebben een sterk en goed op elkaar ingespeeld team en ik wist dat alles in goede banen zou worden geleid tijdens mijn afwezigheid. Mijn mails heb ik wel gecheckt en ik heb de nummers ingezien voordat ze naar de drukker gingen, maar ik heb niets bijgestuurd of aangepast. Het belangrijke september issue dat tijdens de eerste weken van mijn verlof naar de drukker ging, was al zeer goed voorbereid voordat ik wegging. Ik wist precies wat de inhoud zou zijn en hoe het eruit zou gaan zien. Ik ben tijdens mijn verlof, na de bevalling, wel regelmatig naar kantoor geweest, vooral voor mental support, een beetje bijsturen en om de meiden weer even te zien.”

KORT NA DE GEBOORTE VAN PERRE WAS JE ALWEER AANWEZIG TIJDENS EEN VOGUE EVENT. “Drie weken na de bevalling was de lancering van het septembernummer. Ik had van tevoren gezegd: ik probeer erbij te zijn, maar beloof niets. Ik kom alleen als het echt goed voelt. Met Perre liep alles op rolletjes en ik voelde me fit, dus ik ben gegaan. Het was heel lekker om iedereen weer te zien en ik hoefde er verder niet al te veel moeite voor te doen. Ik bemoeide me niet met de organisatie, trok een jurkje aan, deed lippenstift op en ik kon gaan genieten.

Daarnaast waren er tijdens mijn verlof nog twee events waar ik ook van de partij was; Vogue Fashion’s Night Out en de launch van Vogue Man.” HOE COMBINEER JE JE DRUKKE JOB MET JE GEZIN? “Ik heb altijd fulltime gewerkt, ook na de geboortes van mijn dochter Sam en zoon Joris. Toen werkte ik bij de bladen Yes en Libelle en dat was wel iets anders. Als hoofdredacteur van Vogue heb ik vaker ’s avonds dingen; een cocktail hier, een diner daar. Nu hebben we op maandag, dinsdag en woensdag een hele lieve oppas in huis. Op donderdag is mijn verloofde Robert bij Perre en op vrijdag werk ik vanuit huis, dat doe ik al sinds ik moeder ben. >

As the editor in chief, you are very important for the magazine, what was it like to go on maternity leave?

"We have a strong and well-organized team and I knew that everything would run smoothly during my absence. I did check my e-mails and I saw the issues before they went to press, but I didn’t adjust or modify anything. The important September Issue, which went to press during the first weeks of my leave, was very well prepared before I left. I knew exactly what the content would be and what it would look like. During my leave and after giving birth to Perre, I regularly went to the office, especially for mental support, a little adjustment here and there and to see the girls again."

Shortly after the birth of your son Perre you were already present during a Vogue event.

"The September issue was launched three weeks after Perre was born. I told my coworkers: I’ll try to be there, but I’m not going to make any promises. I’ll only come if it feels right. With Perre everything went smoothly and I felt fit, so I went. It was really nice to see everyone again and I did not have to put too much effort in. I didn’t organize the event, I just put on a dress and lipstick and I could enjoy myself. There were two other events during my leave where I was also present; Vogue Fashion's Night Out and the launch of Vogue Man." How do you combine your busy job with your family?

"I have always worked full-time, even after the birth of my daughter Sam and son Joris. But then I worked at the magazines Libelle and Yes and it was quite different.

As editor in chief of Vogue, there are also a lot of events at night. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we have a very sweet babysitter at home. On Thursday my fiancé Robert is with Perre and on Fridays I work from home, I have done that ever since I became a mother.

This morning I had twenty invitations in my mailbox. Robert and I discussed how to plan everything. I don’t want to be away from home three nights a week. Not just for Perre, but also not for Joris and Robert.

KRIEBELDE HET TIJDENS JE VERLOF WEL EENS OM WEER AAN HET WERK TE GAAN? “Ik ben een paar keer naar kantoor gegaan, voor wat support in drukke tijden.

En tijdens de fashion weeks was het af en toe nagelbijten, ik vond het toch wel erg jammer die te moeten missen. Ik was zo benieuwd naar hoe de collecties waren en wilde ze van dichtbij zien, dat zit toch in je bloed. Ik bekeek de livefeeds van de shows online en speurde Instagram af naar de foto’s die collega’s postten.”

JE HEBT TWEE OUDERE KINDEREN, HOE VINDEN ZIJ HET OM EEN KLEIN BROERTJE TE HEBBEN? “Ze vinden het superleuk en zijn enorm trots en blij met Perre. Sam woont in Londen, rond de bevalling en de eerste paar weken na de geboorte was ze bij ons thuis. Nu ze weer in Londen is, FaceTimen we vaak zodat ze haar broertje kan zien.

Joris is met recht een trotse broer. Hij biedt aan om op te passen en als ik even de deur uitga voor een boodschap, blijft Perre gewoon thuis bij Joris. Hij verschoont zijn luiers, doet hem in bad en soms ligt de kleine Perre in het grote bed van Joris te slapen als hij op zijn kamer aan het studeren is.”

Were you excited to go back to work?

"I did go to the office for some support in busy times. And during the fashion weeks I sometimes had to bite my nails, it was difficult for me to miss the amazing runway shows. I was so curious about the collections and wanted to see them up close really badly. So I watched the live feeds of the shows online and checked Instagram to see what my colleagues posted."

You have two older children; do they like having a younger brother?

"They think it is super fun and they are extremely proud and pleased with Perre.

Sam lives in London, but she was at home with us for a few weeks after Perre was born. Now she's back in London, we FaceTime often so she can see her brother. Joris truly is a proud brother. He offers to take care of him and if I need to go to the supermarket, Perre just stays at home with Joris. He changes his diapers, gives him a bath and sometimes little Perre is sleeping in Joris’ big bed while Joris is studying in his room.”

SOMMIGE MANNEN GEVEN DE MOEDER VAN HUN KIND EEN JUWEEL NA DE BEVALLING, HEB JE DIT ZOGENAAMDE BAARGOUD GEKREGEN? “Robert kan alles maken en doet enorm veel voor me, maar nee ik heb geen geboortegoud gekregen. Ik denk dat hij niet eens weet dat het bestaat. In plaats daarvan is het hele huis gerenoveerd, geschilderd, doen alle lampen het en hebben we voor drie winters hout in de schuur. Dus je hoort mij niet klagen.

Ik ben eigenlijk helemaal niet zo van de sieraden. Ik draag maar één juweel en dat is de witgouden ring van de moeder van Robert. Toen zijn moeder drie jaar geleden overleed en hij en zijn zussen haar sieraden verdeelden, vroeg hij aan zijn zussen of hij er ook een mocht voor zijn meisje. Hij gaf me de ring een tikkeltje verlegen toen ik aan het koken was en sindsdien heb ik hem niet meer afgedaan.”

Some men give the mother of their child a jewel after giving birth; did you get this so-called baby mama gift?

"Robert can fix everything and does anything for me, but no, I did not get a push present. I think he don’t even know it exists.

Instead, the entire house is renovated, painted, all lamps are working and we have enough wood in the shed to last us three winters. So I am not complaining. Actually, I am not really into jewels. I wear only one piece of jewellery, the gold ring that used to belong to Robert’s mother. When his mother passed away three years ago and he and his sisters were dividing her jewellery, he asked his sisters if he could have this ring for his girl. He then gave me the ring a bit shy when I was cooking and I haven’t taken it off since."

JULLIE ZIJN VERLOOFD, GAAT ER BINNENKORT EEN TROUWRING KOMEN? “Ik denk dat Robert en ik eeuwig verloofd blijven, maar mochten we toch gaan trouwen dan is een subtiele diamanten alliance ring mooi naast de ring die ik nu draag.”

You are engaged; will there be another ring, a wedding ring soon?

"I think Robert and I will stay engaged forever, but if we would get married, a subtle diamond alliance ring will fit nicely next to the ring that I wear now."

Vanochtend zaten er twintig uitnodigingen in mijn mailbox. Robert en ik overleggen dan even hoe we alles gaan plannen. Ik wil niet drie avonden in de week van huis zijn. Niet alleen voor Perre, maar ook niet voor Joris en Robert.

Ik geloof dat kinderen liefde en aandacht nodig hebben en ik wil er ’s avonds zijn voor mijn zoons en man en ik wil Joris kunnen helpen met zijn huiswerk.

Natuurlijk zijn er events waar een hoofdredacteur echt bij moet zijn, maar voor andere happenings hebben we bij Vogue gelukkig leuke meiden die voor mij in de plaats kunnen gaan. Je moet goed kiezen, regelen en organiseren en op tijd aan de bel trekken als het toch te druk wordt.”

Je runt maar liefst drie websites. Hoe combineer je je werk met je gezinsleven?

“Mijn gezin staat altijd op nummer 1, daarna komt mijn bedrijf. In de online branche gaat het werk 24/7 door en ik ben altijd stand-by. Ik houd van mijn werk, anders zou ik het niet vol kunnen houden. Ik bezoek vaak events en ben veel op reis. Vooral met twee kinderen, een man en een hond is het flink plannen. Mijn man is heel begripvol, hij stimuleert me in het opbouwen en laten groeien van mijn bedrijf. We hebben het geluk dat we hele lieve en makkelijke kinderen hebben en dat mijn ouders helpen waar ze kunnen.”

HOE BEPAAL JE NAAR WELKE EVENTS JE GAAT? “Ik kan elke dag vullen met perspresentaties, events en feestjes. Superleuk, maar met twee kinderen moet ik selectief zijn. Ik ga alleen naar events of op persreis als het belangrijk is voor de sites of als ik het echt heel leuk vind. We zorgen er altijd voor dat er een oppas is of dat de kinderen naar mijn ouders gaan.“ HOE REGEL JE DE DAGELIJKSE OPVANG VOOR JE KINDEREN? “Omdat de sites draaien om pregnancy, motherhood en fatherhood is het gelukkig geen probleem om mijn kids af en toe mee te nemen naar afspraken en events. De eerste 5 maanden heb ik Fabian en Jade-Ming overal mee naartoe genomen. Ons kantoor heb ik zo ingericht dat mijn kinderen en die van mijn collega’s mee kunnen. Jade-Ming gaat twee dagen per week naar de crèche en Fabian zit inmiddels op school.”

“WE WILLEN FABIAN ELKE DAG ZELF NAAR SCHOOL BRENGEN EN OPHALEN, DUS PLAN IK MIJN AFSPRAKEN IN ZIJN SCHOOLTIJDEN” IS ER VEEL VERANDERD NU FABIAN NAAR SCHOOL GAAT? “Het was even flink aanpassen. We willen hem zelf elke dag brengen en ophalen en dat is best onhandig als hij twee keer in de week maar een halve dag school heeft. Dan heb ik net mijn eerste afspraak gehad en mijn laptop geopend en dan kan hij alweer worden opgehaald. Maar ik zie dat Fabian het heel belangrijk vindt dat wij er zelf voor hem zijn en daarom plan ik mijn dag en afspraken er graag omheen.”

HOE IS DE BAND TUSSEN JE KINDEREN? “De kinderen schelen 3,5 jaar. Ik heb er bewust voor gekozen om er wat tijd tussen te laten zitten. Niet alleen omdat ik bezig ben met het opbouwen van > 122 | Gassan magazine

You run three websites; how do you combine your work with your family life?

"My family is number one, always. The online industry is a 24/7 business, so I am always on standby. But I love my job. I have many events to visit and travel a lot. I really need to plan everything, especially with two children, a husband and a dog. My husband is very understanding; he encourages me to build and grow my business. We are fortunate to have very sweet and easy children and my parents help wherever they can."

How do you decide which events you go to?

"I can fill each day with press events and parties. It’s a lot of fun, but with two kids I have to be selective. I only go to events or press trips that are important for the sites or if I think it's really worth going.

We always make sure we have a sweet babysitter watching our kids or they go to my parents."

How do you manage the daily care for your children?

"Because the sites revolve around pregnancy, motherhood and fatherhood it is not a problem for me to occasionally bring my kids with me to appointments and events. The first five months I took Fabian and Jade-Ming anywhere I went.

Our office is childproof, so my children and those of my colleagues can come to work. Jade-Ming goes to day-care two days a week and Fabian is in school."

Did things change now Fabian goes to school?

"We really had to adjust, we want to bring and pick him up ourselves every day. But that can be pretty hard when twice a week he only goes to school in the morning. I would just have finished my first appointment and opened my laptop, when I already had to pick him up. But we can see Fabian really appreciates it when we come to school ourselves, so I don’t mind planning my day around his school schedule.”

How is the relationship between your children?

"There’s 3,5 years between them, which we had hoped for. Not only because I'm working on building my business, but mostly because I really wanted Fabian to understand that he would become a big brother. He experienced the entire

mijn bedrijf, maar vooral omdat het me erg leuk leek als Fabian zou begrijpen dat er een broertje of zusje bij zou komen. Hij heeft de hele zwangerschap bewust meegemaakt en is een ontzettend lieve grote broer. Misschien heeft het met de leeftijd te maken, maar hij is nog nooit jaloers geweest op Jade-Ming.”

HEB JIJ NA DE BEVALLINGEN VAN JE KINDEREN HET ZOGENAAMDE BAARGOUD GEKREGEN? “Mijn man Bastiaan gaf me na de geboorte van Fabian de Love bracelet van Cartier. Voor mijn dertigste verjaardag en de geboorte van Jade-Ming heb ik een vintage Rolex van hem gekregen.”

“Van kinds af aan ben ik al gek op juwelen. Ik kon uren spelen met het juwelenkistje van mijn moeder en nog steeds kan ik genieten van prachtige juwelen. Hoe mooi is het dat ik hier mijn beroep van heb kunnen maken en elke dag omgeven ben met de mooiste juwelen en sieraden?

Ik draag elke dag juwelen die bij mijn kleding passen, ze maken een outfit speciaal en af. Aan mijn linkerhand draag ik praktisch altijd hetzelfde: een prachtige solitair ring tezamen met rijringen in verschillende slijpvormen.

Mijn rechterhand wissel ik dagelijks af. Grote favoriet is toch wel mijn Classic 1818 ring van Choices by DL. Mijn klanten raad ik altijd aan om zoveel mogelijk combinaties uit te proberen met kleurstenen en randen van Choices

by DL en dat doe ik zelf ook.

Om af te wisselen heb ook een zwarte Pave ring, beeldig als je all dressed in black bent. Bij een jeans draag ik graag mijn ring met blauwe saffier en bruine diamanten om mijn wijsvinger óf juist alleen een dun alliance ringetje met de letter M van Monique om mijn pink. Helemaal niets aan mijn rechterhand, maar wel de diamanten combi aan mijn linkerhand staat ook erg chique.

Op vakantie is het een heel ander verhaal. Op mijn werk probeer ik er altijd tiptop uit te zien, maar aan zee laat ik dat een stukje achterwege. Natuurlijk gaan mijn witte en zwarte Choices by DL ringen met felle kleurstenen mee en daarnaast draag ik dan graag de geelgouden creolen. Creolen zijn altijd leuk!

Ook zo voel ik me prima.

De meest speciale juwelen zijn de stukken die ik van dierbaren heb gekregen of waar een verhaal aan vastzit. De twee armbandjes met kleurstenen heb ik gekregen van lieve collega's. Het blauwe armbandje kreeg ik omdat ik mijn ellenboog gebroken had en deze stenen het herstel zouden bevorderen. Hoe lief is dat?! De andere is zelfgemaakt door een collega, speciaal voor mij heeft ze alle stenen uitgezocht die goed bij mij zouden passen. Dit soort lieve dingen vergeet ik nooit meer.

Mannen komen en gaan in je leven maar je ouders blijven altijd bij je. Daarom heb ik als allerbelangrijkste stukken de juwelen gekozen die ik van mijn ouders heb gekregen. Het prachtige kruisje kreeg ik van mijn moeder om me te beschermen en de rijring gaf mijn vader me. Mijn vader is helaas al 8 jaar niet meer onder ons. Mijn zusje en ik dragen allebei een helft van zijn trouwring en de andere helft is eraan gemaakt en bezet met briljanten.

Als er iets speciaals of moeilijk is, draai ik altijd aan deze ring en voel ik dat mijn vader bij me is.

Je ziet, het hoeven niet de dure stukken te zijn die het aller belangrijkste voor je zijn. Het mooie van juwelen is dat ze weer naar de volgende generatie gaan en prachtige herinneringen met zich meedragen.”

"As a little girl I was crazy about jewellery.

I could spend hours playing with my mother’s jewellery box and I still enjoy wearing beautiful pieces. I love how I managed to turn my passion into a career and the most beautiful pieces now surround me every day.

I always wear jewellery to match my clothes; they make an outfit. On my left hand I always wear the same: a beautiful solitaire ring together with multi row rings with different cuts. I change the rings I wear on my right hand everyday. My favourite is the Classic 1818 ring by Choices by DL. I always recommend my clients to try out as many combinations with gemstones and frames, just like I do myself.

I also have a black Pave ring, which is gorgeous when you're all dressed in black.

When I wear jeans, I have a ring with blue sapphire and brown diamonds on my index finger and sometimes I choose to wear only a thin alliance ring with the letter M of Monique around my little finger.

Occasionally I wear nothing on my right hand; together with the diamonds on my left it makes a chic combination.

At work I always try to look my best, but when I’m on vacation it's a different story.

I will bring my white and black Choices by DL rings with bright gemstones and I wear the golden creole earrings.

To me, the most important pieces I own are the ones that my loved ones gave to me, they have a story to tell. My dear colleagues gave me the two bracelets with gemstones. I received the blue one because I had broken my elbow and these stones would help me recover. How sweet is that? Another dear colleague made me the other bracelet; she had picked out stones that matched my personality.

Men come and go, but your parents stay with you forever. That's why the most important pieces of jewellery I chose for this picture are the ones I got from my parents. My mother gave me the beautiful cross to protect me and my father gave me the row ring. My father passed away eight years ago. We made his wedding ring into two rings, one for me and one for my sister. His wedding ring is now one half of our rings and the other half is a ring with brilliants. During special or difficult times, I always turn this ring and I feel that my father is with me.

As you can see, the most important jewellery doesn’t need to be very expensive. The great thing about jewellery is to pass them on to the next generation and they carry a wonderful memory with them."
