elcome to the Belgian edition of the airport magazine. You will undoubtedly know that there is so much more to (re)discover in Belgium than waffles, the European Parliament and our 800 different kinds of beer!

An example is the biggest nautical collection at Belgium, «Les Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure», situated no less than 40 km away from our airport. A preserved natural site which is one of the European destinations of excellence, offering activities for people of all ages.

Vous le savez sans doute, il y a tellement plus à (re)découvrir en Belgique que les gaufres, le parlement européen et nos 800 sortes de bières ! Par exemple, le plus grand ensemble nautique de Belgique, « les Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure », est situé à moins de 40km de notre aéroport. Un site naturel préservé qui fait partie des Destinations européennes d’excellence, et propose des activités pour tous les âges. L’impressionnante abbaye de Villers-la-Ville, toute proche également, organise à nouveau le très populaire Instant Magique où le public se balade au fil de sentiers éclairés aux brûlots et découvre çà et là un spectacle de feu, de la magie et du chant. La Province de Liège organise en octobre sa biennale du Design « Reciprocity » proposant des expositions et des évènements dans plusieurs musées, galeries et lieux insolites. La Belgique possède une excellente réputation pour sa gastronomie ! Profitez donc des évènements culinaires qui sont organisés à Bruxelles et en Wallonie. Vous avez l’embarras du choix entre les festivals de la bière ou les journées de brassage, les balades gourmandes, les salons culinaires, les fêtes de légumes et de fruits ou simplement un repas à l’une des innombrables bonnes tables du pays.

The impressive Abbey of Villers-la-Ville, also very nearby, is again organising the very popular «Instant Magique» where members of the public walk in the glow of footpaths illuminated by torches and discover here and there a spectacle of fire, magic and singing. In October, the Province of Liège organises its design biennial «Reciprocity» which puts on exhibitions and events in several museums, galleries and unusual places. Belgium has an excellent reputation for its cuisine! So why not enjoy culinary events organised in Brussels and Wallonia? You will find it difficult to choose between beer festivals and brewing days, gourmand walks, culinary salons, fruit and vegetable festivals or simply a meal in one of the many fine restaurants. If you arrive in Belgium via BSCA or if you leave for one of our 96 destinations, you will have many opportunities to (re)discover a Belgian influence and I hope that you will appreciate it as much as I do. The preferred TV and radio host of many Belgians is presenting “Belgium’s got Talent” on RTL-TVI: which is only normal, Jean-Michel Zecca loves his country!

Jean-Michel does not lack of inspiration when it comes to evoke the Belgian gastronomic heritage. “You have to taste Belgian specialties (but avoid the street “la rue des Bouchers” in Brussels – with exception of “Armes de Bruxelles”) such as “eel in green sauce, the escaveche de Chimay, the local beers, the jambon d’Ardennes (Ham), the “boulets liégeois”, the chocolate of Marcolini…”. What he does not recommend: the restaurants along the seaside. What about the typical fried chips? The best are at Robert’s in Charleroi, without hesitation!

Ainsi, 5 offres tarifaires sont désormais disponibles pour les voyageurs : le P1 (ancien Parking Airport), le P2 (ancien Parking Long Term), le P3 (nouveau parking ouvert depuis les vacances de Pâques, proposant 2348 places aux tarifs « low-cost », intéressants dès 10 jours de stationnement). In order to make it easier to find somewhere to park, we have changed the way in which car parks are signposted. Thus, 5 rates will now be available to travellers: P1 (former Airport Car Park), P2 (former Long-stay Car Park) and P3 (new car park open since the Easter holidays with 2,348 «low cost» places for 10 days or more).

Les 4 nouvelles surfaces commerciales proposées seront : prêt-à-porter, Maroquinerie/ Bagagerie, Bijouterie/Horlogerie et un bar. The Non-Aviation Commercial Department has studied the best way of modifying the airside area of our airport in order to make it possible to add new shopping areas while improving the comfort of the area. The 4 new proposed shopping areas will be: off-the-peg clothes, leather goods/luggage, jewellery/ clocks and watches and a bar.

Le 1er juillet dernier, Camille, jeune artiste de 26 ans, a fêté le premier anniversaire de sa petite entreprise de bijoux : Camille Belgian Creation.

Last 1st of July, Camille, a young artist 26 years old, celebrated the 1st anniversary of her jewel company: Camille Belgian Creation.

D’où vient cette passion pour les bijoux ? À l’âge de 12 ans déjà, je chipotais avec des bijoux. Je les démontais, je les transformais. Puis, après mes études de commerce, je me suis lancée dans le stylisme-modélisme pour vivre ma passion à 100 %.

Where does this passion for jewels come from? At the age of 12 already, I played with jewels. I was pulling them apart, transforming them. Then, after I graduated in business, I got myself into stylizationmodeling to live my passion at 100 %.

Comment s’est fait le lancement de votre entreprise ? Au début, je devais lancer une affaire avec une amie. Le projet a capoté alors je me suis plongée dans l’aventure toute seule !

How did you launch your business? At first, I planned to launch a business with a friend. The project collapsed so I immersed myself in this adventure alone!

En quoi vos bijoux sont-ils originaux ? La couleur des chaînes que j’utilise est particulière. C’est un or vieilli, on aime ou on n’aime pas ! Ensuite, leur structure est plutôt originale. Et enfin le mélange de matières, la soie avec le laiton par exemple.

What makes your jewels original? The chain color I use is special. It’s like old gold. You love it or hate it! Then their structure is rather unique. And finally the mixture of materials, silk with brass for example.

Qu’espérez-vous pour le futur ? Vivre de mes créations ! Et pourquoi pas ouvrir une boutique…

Jérôme et Sophie ont été séduits par la fabrication du bonbon conique adulé de tous les belges, le fameux cuberdon. Et voici comment Cuberdons Léopold est né… Comment s’est fait le déclic ? Je suis un jour tombé sur un article qui expliquait le processus de fabrication du cuberdon. Une friandise noble mais malheureusement cachée sous des cellophanes de supermarché. Je me suis dit : dépoussiérons-le, remettons-le au goût du jour ! Comment vous êtes-vous lancés dans l’aventure ? J’ai contacté les fabricants, il y en a 3 en Belgique. Je souhaitais changer la recette pour en faire un bonbon moins sucré et 100 % naturel. Un seul a accepté et c’est avec lui que nous avons démarré l’aventure.

Jérôme and Sophie got charmed by the manufacturing process of the cone-shaped sweets, loved by all Belgians, the famous “cuberdon”. And here is how “’Cuberdons Leopold” was born…. How did the penny drop? One day, I came across an article that explained the manufacturing process of the curberdon. A noble treat but unfortunately hidden under supermarket cellophanes. I told myself: let’s get rid of the dust on it and put it up to date! How did you get started in the adventure? I contacted the manufacturers, there are three in Belgium. I wanted to change the recipe to make it less sweet and 100 % natural. Only one agreed and it’s with him that we started the adventure.

It’s a Belgian product, luxurious and design. Our challenge? Make it a sophisticated gift and sell it where it’s not expected. En quoi votre cuberdon se démarque-t-il ? C’est un produit belge, luxueux et design. Notre challenge ? En faire un cadeau raffiné et le vendre là où on ne l’attend pas. Dans les concept stores par exemple. On me disait fou et c’est finalement un pari réussi ! How does your cuberdon makes the difference? It’s a Belgian product, luxurious and design. Our challenge? Etiez-vous destiné à faire de l’art votre métier ? Petit, je dessinais, jouais de la musique, écrivais des histoires et faisais du théâtre. Mes parents ont très vite compris que j’allais en faire mon métier.

Were you destined to make art your profession ? When I was young, I was constantly drawing, playing music, writing stories and doing theater. My parents quickly understood I was going to make it my job one day.

En quoi vos créations sont-elles originales? Elles vont d’une aquarelle format A4 à une construction spatiale de 300 m2. Ce qui rend mon travail original, c’est la manière dont je combine différents médias et la façon dont j’invite le spectateur à prendre part à mes réalisations.

What makes your creations original? It varies A4 watercolors up to a spatial installation of 300 m2. What makes my work original is the combination of different media and the way I invite the spectator to take part in my projects.

Quelle a été votre œuvre la plus importante? « Sea of Tranquility » (2010): un musée fictif voyageant dans un paquebot fictif. C’est une manifestation multimédia avec des sculptures, films et musique (que j’ai moi-même composée). L’expo a voyagé de ville en ville et s’installera à Marseille en 2013.

What was your most important work of art? “Sea of Tranquility” (2010): a roaming fictive museum in a fictive cruise liner. It’s a multimedia event with sculpture, film and music (which I composed myself). The exhibition travels from city to city and will be shown in Marseilles in 2013. www.hansopdebeeck.com

M. Robert, quel est, selon vous, le plus grand atout d’une valise Samsonite ? Vos produits sont testés d’une façon intense. Dans le passé, vous avez même réalisé un spot publicitaire montrant un éléphant marchant sur une de vos valises. Comment se déroulent ces tests en réalité et est-ce vraiment nécessaire ? La politique de garantie de Samsonite et le service après-vente font la fierté de notre entreprise. Plusieurs études de marché montrent qu’il s’agit également d’un service extrêmement apprécié par nos clients. Ce n’est pas nouveau, comme vous le soulignez à juste titre, c’est depuis toujours une clé de voûte dans la façon de faire de Samsonite. Chaque produit, sans exception, est testé dans les moindres détails. Il existe environ 13 tests différents, allant du test de la roulette (les roulettes de la valise sont testées sur un parcours cahoteux de 32 km à la vitesse de marche) au test de la poignée (la valise est levée de 2500 à 5000 fois avec la poignée puis lâchée brusquement), en passant par le test de la poignée de traction, d’inaltérabilité des couleurs, des fermetures éclair, d’humidité, etc. L’objectif est évidemment de s’approcher au mieux de la réalité car les valises sont mises à rude épreuve. Le test le plus spectaculaire est probablement celui du tambour, au cours duquel une valise remplie est placée dans un énorme tambour métallique de plusieurs mètres de diamètre, rempli d’obstacles en bois et en métal. Après 25 rotations (pour les coques dures) et 100 rotations (pour les valises souples), la valise doit rester totalement fonctionnelle et ne peut présenter que quelques griffes. Le test par excellence est bien sûr celui du consommateur, jour après jour, à chaque voyage. Vu la robustesse des produits Samsonite, vos clients n’achètent que peu de vos produits dans leur vie ? Une étude a montré qu’un client moyen achète 5 produits Samsonite ou plus. What form do these tests actually take and are they really necessary? Samsonite’s guarantee policy and aftersales service are aspects of which we are proud in our company and, if we can believe the various market research surveys, they are really appreciated by our customers. This is not anything new, as you correctly observe, and it has always been a cornerstone of the Samsonite approach. Without any exception, all products are thoroughly tested. This testing process starts as early as during the initial design and development phase during which every individual part must satisfy very specific quality requirements and it is systematically applied once a product is in production. The ultimate test will obviously be performed by the consumer – day after day during each trip. De la peau au cuir C’est le tannage qui permet de transformer les peaux en cuir souple. Mais comment ? Une fois délainée, on lave et dégraisse la peau dans de grandes cuves remplies de chaux et de fiente de pigeon. Trempée dans un bain de sel pour la raffermir, la peau est ensuite plongée dans d’autres grandes cuves remplies cette fois de tannins naturels (safran, indigo, henné, etc.). Une fois teintes, les peaux sont séchées dans les collines voisines. La peau peut ensuite être vendue aux artisans du souk qui en confectionneront des babouches, des sacs, des ceintures, etc.

Avec son architecture influencée par la mode autrichienne et par ses voisins du nord, elle ne rougit aucunement par rapport à ses voisines italiennes ou croates pour ce qui est de l’ambiance et de l’atmosphère du sud. La population vit à l’extérieur la plupart du temps, que ce soit dans les artères de la ville ou dans les parcs, en été comme en hiver. Les restaurants et les bars sont le cœur de la vieille ville. It is a walk marked out by impressive panoramas which lead to many deserted creeks. Another strong point of the municipality is its three charming islands. That of Porquerolles, the largest of the three is also the most frequently visited and is not to be missed. To get there, you go by boat from Port de Plaisance (two departures per day). There are alternating agricultural areas, vast wooded areas and beaches for you to enjoy a day in the middle of nature. The island is also home to France’s National Botanical Conservatory where some 130 varieties of olive trees are preserved!

Being an air hostess is an unusual occupation for which the training is very varied. What more could you ask for than to work while discovering the world? It is a way of combining what is of practical use with what is enjoyable.

Mon travail consiste particulièrement à veiller à la sécurité des passagers. C’est la priorité de notre compagnie. Ensuite, il faut pouvoir assurer le confort de ceux-ci et rendre leur voyage inoubliable. Chaque passager mérite une attention unique grâce à un geste simple, un accueil chaleureux, un sourire, un service qui fera toute la différence. C’est aussi être présent en cas de besoin, écouter, rassurer, agir rapidement et efficacement en cas de problème. Il faut pouvoir administrer les premiers soins, être capable d’éteindre un incendie et porter grande attention aux enfants, aux personnes à mobilité réduite et aux personnes âgées. Pour cela une bonne communication et un travail d’équipe sont nécessaires. Il faut pouvoir jongler avec plusieurs langues. Ce que je préfère dans mon travail, c’est qu’il n’y a jamais de routine. Après avoir été représentant du tour-opérateur Jetair en Turquie, à Gran Canaria et à Djerba, j’ai saisi la possibilité de revenir au pays et surtout de poursuivre ma carrière au sein de l’entreprise, cette fois pour la compagnie aérienne Jetairfly.

After having been a representative of the tour operator Jetair in Turkey, Gran Canaria and Djerba, I have taken advantage of the opportunity to return to this country and particularly to pursue my career within the company, this time for airline Jetairfly.

Depuis avril 2012, je travaille comme Customer Support Agent au comptoir des voyageurs de Jetairfly, à Charleroi et à Zaventem. Deux aéroports différents, avec une ambiance différente et où les responsabilités de travail le sont aussi. À Bruxelles, le multilinguisme est particulièrement de mise. Je peux pratiquer les langues que je connais, du néerlandais à l’espagnol en passant par l’anglais et l’allemand. J’y travaille avec toute une équipe et les responsabilités sont réparties sur l’ensemble des collaborateurs. À Charleroi, l’ambiance est familiale car l’aéroport est plus petit et accueille moins de passagers qu’à Bruxelles. J’y suis plus souvent seul mais j’apprécie aussi de pouvoir gérer l’aide aux voyageurs de A à Z.

Since April 2012, I have been working as a customer support agent on the travel counter of Jetairfly in Charleroi and Zaventem. These are two different airports which have a different atmosphere and for which different duties are required. In Brussels, multilingualism is particularly necessary. I can practise the languages which I know, Dutch to Spanish through English and German. I work with a whole team and my duties are spread over all operators. In Charleroi, there is a family atmosphere as the airport is smaller and has fewer passengers passing through it than Brussels. I am more often on my own there, but I appreciate being able to manage customer care from A to Z.

La fonction implique d’accueillir et d’informer les voyageurs. Nous sommes là aussi pour les aider et leur apporter des solutions en cas de problèmes éventuels. Je me sens utile car je leur apporte un réel soutien. L’environnement de travail est passionnant et fait rêver. En plus, je suis comblé par les nombreux contacts humains. Mais il faut savoir aussi faire preuve de patience et de psychologie. Bref, une fonction très diversifiée dans une entreprise où il est possible d’évoluer.

The position involves welcoming and informing travellers. We are also there to help them and to provide solutions to any problems. I feel as though I am doing something useful as I am providing them with real support. The working environment is exciting and gives you something to dream about. I am also overwhelmed by the number of people I come into contact with. But it is also necessary to be able to exercise patience and to have an understanding of human psychology. In short, it is a very varied position in a company in which development is possible.

Après les nouveaux parkings, la nouvelle piste, … Wanty s’éloigne cette fois du site propre du BSCA pour s’attaquer à la nouvelle nationale qui reliera l’autoroute R3 à l’aéroport. Un chantier qui, bien sûr, ne dépend pas directement du BSCA même si l’aéroport de Charleroi en bénéficiera grandement. « Si on parle de route, c’est évidement nous qui prenons les décisions », explique Fabian Namur, responsable presse de la Sofico, la Société wallonne de financement complémentaire des infrastructures. « Le projet pèse 2,6 millions d’euros et est prioritaire pour des raisons économiques ».

After new car parks, a new runway, …Wanty is moving away from the proper BSCA site this time in order to start work on the new main road which will connect the R3 motorway with the Airport - road works which will obviously not depend directly on BSCA even if Charleroi Airport benefits greatly from them. «If you’re talking about the road, it is obviously us who will be taking the decisions», explains Fabian Namur, the Press Officer for Sofico, the Walloon company for the supplementary financing of infrastructure. «The project will cost 2.6 million euros and is a priority for economic reasons». En moyenne, vingt ouvriers travaillent quotidiennement à la construction de la nouvelle route. Un chantier important qui n’impressionne pas la direction du groupe. Pour Christophe Wanty, le CEO du groupe, pas de stress : « Si le BSCA collabore avec nous depuis toutes ces années, c’est parce que nous effectuons un travail fiable dans les délais annoncés et dans le respect de normes de qualité ».

A very important diversion

Une déviation primordiale L’enjeu du chantier ? « La principale motivation est économique mais la nouvelle nationale est construite pour des raisons de sécurité également », affirme Fabian. En effet, l’aéroport de Charleroi ainsi que le zoning d’entreprises qui l’entoure sont en plein essor depuis plusieurs années et constituent donc une véritable force économique pour la région. Et si différentes séries de travaux ont été effectuées pour améliorer l’accès à la zone, restait toujours le problème de la route d’Heppignies. Particuliers et poids-lourds doivent l’emprunter pour accéder au site de l’aéroport. Or, la voie est loin d’être adaptée à un tel trafic, d’où un encombrement constant et une circulation compliquée. La route étant traversée par trois ronds-points, elle est en outre une véritable source d’hésitation pour les conducteurs. Enfin, les riverains étaient dérangés par une circulation trop dense. « Les désagréments causés étaient trop importants, il était vraiment temps d’agir. Avec la nouvelle nationale, il y aura un accès direct de l’autoroute R3 à l’aéroport. Le problème sera donc réglé. »

Wanty est là Suite à l’adjudication publique lancée par la Sofico, la SA Wanty a remporté ce marché. Et comme toujours, l’entreprise intervient avec la même rapidité. « Le chantier a commencé début mai et devrait se

What is at stake with the road works? «The main reason is economic but the new main road is also being constructed for safety reasons», affirms Fabian. Indeed, Brussels-South Charleroi Airport and the companies which surround it have been booming for several years and constitute a real economic force in the region. And, although various work has been done to improve access to the area, the Heppignies road remained problematic. Individuals and heavy goods lorries have to use it to access the Airport site. Well, the road is far from suitable for such traffic; hence there are constant queues and a complicated traffic system. As the road is punctuated by three roundabouts, drivers are reluctant to use it. Lastly, local residents have found the very dense traffic to be disturbing. «The inconvenience caused has been too important; it was really time to act. With the new main road, there will be direct access from the R3 to the Airport. The problem will, therefore, be resolved.»

Wanty is there Sofico made a public tender and Wanty did win the market. And, as always, the enterprise is acting with its usual speed. «The road works started at the beginning of May and should be finished by the end of the year», explains Olivier Vanwynsberghe, the Site Manager of Wanty. «To be exact, we are constructing a road across open fields. This requires considerable manpower and materials of all kinds». On average, twenty Wanty workers a day are working on the construction of the new road. These are significant road works which do not scare the management of the Group. They are not a source of stress for Christophe Wanty, the CEO of the Group: «If BSCA has worked with us for all these years, it is because we do a good job within the specified deadlines and up to a high standard».

Une exposition internationale ? Et pourquoi pas! La Belgique est candidate pour organiser l’édition 2017 à Liège. Explications.

An international exposition? Why not! Belgium has put itself forward as a candidate to organise the 2017 event in Liège. Let’s find out more.

Depuis une dizaine d’années, la « Cité ardente » porte bien son nom : elle est en pleine effervescence. « C’est une véritable reconversion », explique Marylène Dominique, responsable de la communication pour le projet « Liège 2017 ». Pour prendre conscience de la mutation opérée, quelques promenades dans la ville suffisent : un opéra flambant neuf, une nouvelle gare Liège-Guillemins dessinée par le célèbre architecte catalan Santiago Calatrava, des activités multiples… Les efforts sont décuplés pour rendre à Liège toute sa splendeur et mettre en avant sa force culturelle. Le lien avec l’organisation d’une exposition internationale ? L’occasion pour le grand public de prendre connaissance de la métamorphose. Ce que Marylène confirme : « Les autorités ont tout de suite pensé qu’une manifestation de cette ampleur pourrait servir de point d’orgue au redéploiement de la région ».

For the last decade, the so-called “Fiery City” has really been living up to its nickname, filled with energy and life. “It’s a real transformation”, explains Marylène Dominique, communication manager for the “Liège 2017” project. Just take a stroll around town to witness the changes: a brand new opera house, a new station, Liège-Guillemins, designed by famous Catalan architect Santiago Calatrava, plenty of hustle and bustle… Huge efforts have been made to restore Liège to its former glory and bring out its cultural strengths. So what’s the connection with organising an international exposition? It’s the perfect opportunity for the general public to see the metamorphosis. As Marylène confirms: “The authorities realised straight away that an event on this scale could be the apogee of the regeneration of the region”.

Une exposition internationale c’est quoi ?

What exactly is an international exposition?

Le concept d’exposition internationale est « très proche de celui d’exposition universelle, même si l’impact est ici plus réduit et le thème plus spécialisé ». La manifestation dure trois mois – pour celle de 2017, du 21 juin au 20 septembre – et elle doit tenir dans un espace de 25 hectares, « ce qui est déjà pas mal ! », note Marylène. L’organisateur s’occupe de tout installer et de construire les pavillons pour chaque pays participant, « contrairement à une exposition universelle où chaque pays met en place son pavillon ». Chaque participant est toutefois libre d’aménager son espace comme il l’entend. La Belgique a, par exemple, conçu un pavillon en forme de manège pour l’actuelle Exposition internationale de Yeosu, en Corée du sud.

The concept of an international exposition is “very close to that of a universal exposition, but here it is on a smaller scale and the theme is more specialised”. The event lasts for three months – for the 2017 version, from 21st June to 20th September – and it must be held in an area of 25 hectares, “which is already quite a feat!”, remarks Marylène. The organiser is responsible for setting everything up and building the pavilions for each participating country, “unlike a universal exposition where each country sets up its own pavilion”. Each participant can however organise its space as it chooses. For example Belgium designed a pavilion in the form of a merry-go-round for the current Expo in Yeosu, in South Korea.

Pour 2017, deux villes sont candidates : Liège et Astana, capitale du Kazakhstan. Le principe : proposer un thème que chaque participant, pays ou organisation internationale, devra développer. Liège a choisi un thème à la fois d’avenir et universel : « Connecter le Monde, relier les Gens et mieux vivre Ensemble ». À Astana, le thème « L’Energie du futur » sera mis en avant. Concrètement, un vote au sein du Bureau International des Expositions, dont pas moins de 160 pays sont membres, aura lieu le 22 novembre pour élire la ville organisatrice. Jusqu’à aujourd’hui, le suspense est de mise car aucune des deux villes n’a encore pris l’ascendant, « mais notre localisation stratégique au cœur de l’Europe et notre thème universel joueront certainement en notre faveur », insiste Marylène.

For 2017, two cities are in the running: Liège and Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. The idea is that a theme is put forward, which must be developed by each participant, country or international organisation. Liège has chosen a theme that is both forwardthinking and universal: “Connecting the World, linking People, better living Together”. For Astana the theme is “Future Energy”. In practical terms, a vote to choose the winning city will be held on 22nd November at the Bureau International des Expositions, an organisation with no fewer than 160 member countries. So far, the suspense is palpable as there’s nothing separating the two cities yet, “but our strategic location right in the heart of Europe, along with our universal theme, will without a doubt be in our favour”, maintains Marylène.

Un plus pour le tourisme

Si l’exposition se déroule à Liège, quelque 6 millions de visiteurs – voire 8 millions car une expo’ internationale se visite souvent en deux jours – sont attendus pour l’occasion. « Une aubaine pour la ville et ses alentours ». L’AWEX, Agence wallonne à l’Exportation et aux Investissements étrangers, l’a bien compris et, en tant que partenaire, s’affaire à promouvoir la candidature de la ville. Trois roadshows vont être organisés à destination des entreprises et le vaste réseau d’entreprises de l’organisation est « une aide très précieuse, qui ne se refuse pas ».

If the event takes place in Liège, some 6 million visitors – even 8 million, as an international exposition is often visited for two days – are expected for the occasion. “It’s a gift for the city and its surrounding area”. The AWEX (Walloon agency for export and foreign investment) understands this very well, and as a partner, is busy promoting the city’s application. Three roadshows will be organised for businesses and the organisation’s huge network of companies will be “a great help, which cannot be refused”.

An important administrative, legal and university town in the Province of Hainaut of which it is the chief town, the city has particularly consolidated and developed its role of being an important place to visit in terms of heritage and tourism. Mons is a town which has three world heritage masterpieces according to UNESCO: the Belfry, the Neolithic mines of Spiennes and the Doudou event.

Dans le cœur historique, chargé d’une longue histoire, la ville compte, outre ses musées de qualité, des édifices appartenant au patrimoine majeur de Wallonie comme la Collégiale Sainte-Waudru, à l’allure imposante, l’Hôtel de Ville gothique, de la grande époque des Ducs de Bourgogne et le Beffroi baroque, haut de 87 mètres, unique en son genre. De nombreux autres bâtiments, dont les plus anciens remontent au 11e siècle, illustrent son architecture civile, religieuse ou militaire. Mais il serait inexact de confiner l’intérêt de la ville à son seul centre historique. La ville de Mons, c’est également une périphérie verdoyante avec des sites de premier plan, comme le Port de Plaisance du Grand-Large, les Minières néolithiques de Spiennes ou la célèbre Maison Van Gogh.

In the historical heart of the city with its long history, the town has, apart from its top quality museums, buildings which form a major part of Wallonia’s heritage such as the Collegiate Church of St Waudru with its imposing appearance, the Gothic Town Hall dating from the grand era of the Dukes of Burgundy and the Baroque Belfry, 87 metres high and one of a kind. Numerous other buildings, of which the oldest date back to the XIth century, illustrate its civil, religious and military architecture. However, it would be inappropriate to confine one’s interest in the town to its historical centre alone. The city of Mons also has a green border with sites of primary importance such as the Port de Plaisance du GrandLarge, the Neolithic mines of Spiennes and Van Gogh’s famous house.

Mons, c’est bien sûr le Doudou, plongeant ses racines dans un lointain passé de traditions populaires et religieuses, comme la Procession du Car d’Or, datant du 14e siècle, et le Combat légendaire dit « Lumeçon », qui met aux prises Saint-Georges et un dragon devant des dizaines de milliers de personnes.

Mons is well known for one particular event: the Doudou which has its roots in a distant past of popular and religious tradition such as the Procession of the Golden Chariot dating from the XIVth century and the legendary Battle of Lumeçon which pits St George against a dragon in front of tens of thousands of people.

Enfin, Mons, c’est une ville tournée vers l’avenir avec son Parc scientifique INITIALIS, regroupant une trentaine d’entreprises spécialisées dans les nouvelles technologies.

Lastly, Mons is looking towards the future with its INITIALIS Scientific Park which brings together thirty companies specialising in new technologies.
