URBAN STUDIO (JANUARY- APRIL 2014) Project: CREATING A INDUSTRIAL PARK, URBAN DESIGN PROJECT Location: Singapore, Northern region Site area: N/a Built up area: N/a Studio Professor: Prof. Nirmal Kishnani, Prof. Tan Puay Yok , Prof. Herbert Dreisetl Collaborative work of four students Project Jurors : Ar. Anna Kerr (CPG Consultants), Mr. Leonard Ng (Atelier Dreiseitl)

The project is an urban design project in the northern part of Singapore. The site is designated for industrial land-use and sits adjacent to Kranji reservoir. Presently the site is dominated by land intensive industries. Living and working conditions of workers are not adequately integrated with the existing urban fabric. Along with inadequacy of dedicated housing there is a lack of social spaces for workers. Despite of surrounded by water all around, the site doesn’t enjoy its proximity to nature, since all industrial backside is facing the water and greens. Keeping in consideration that food self sufficiency will play an important in 2050, and the site is surrounded by future food producing areas, we decided to change the industrial base to Agro-tech industry which will be the processor of the produced food. We have tried to introduce density in the area to activate the proposed social spaces and to use the infrastructure to full of its potential. Lastly we introduced the concept of industrial ecology on regional & sub site levels. We conceive our industries as a literal implication on industrial park i.e. industries area designed in a way such that public and industries can use same infrastructure simultaneously . Details of the project is explained in the further presentation. 2

The site is surrounded by water on both sides, having Kranji reservoir on left side and canal on right hand side. Full site was considered as catchment area, hydrology strategy was devised that cleans & purify water and finally stores it in the Kranji reservoir for potable use. As part of our people-centric approach, the roads in within our master plan are designed to be “complete streets, with dedicated bicycle paths, medians that act as pedestrian crossing refuge for safe crossing, and space in the planting verge for WSUD features. 3d View of the whole site

•Unifying element: A big plaza which serves as a gathering place/point of arrival or dispersal for the different user of the site. •The canopy acts as a symbolic as well as functional cover over this. It provides a shaded with glass façade can be placed to house different functions.
