Decision to pursue masters from National University of Singapore was one of my rewarding decision. Being in Asia and studying the course which focuses of Asian context gave me abundant opportunities to understand and design in the local environment. Under expert studio panel with professors that are masters in their fields including Prof. Herbert Dreiseitl, Prof. Tan puay Yok, Prof. Nirmal Kishnani, etc, the learning graph along the course increases many folds because of their inputs. NUS provides me a platform to observe and understand a very developed architecture in the context of Singapore

The project is a urban design project in the north part of Singapore. The site Is a industrial landuse site and sits adjacent to Kranji reservoir. Presently the site dominated by industries such as wood industry, heavy chemical industry. Prefab concrete and construction industry, recycling industry and many more. Since all the stated industries are land intensive industries, the site full ground coverage has been occupied by each industry. Adding to above, the living and working conditions of workers are not so adequate. There are no social spaces and enough dedicated housing for workers. Also, despite of surrounded by water all around the site doesn’t enjoy its proximity to nature, since all industrial backside is facing the water and greens. ‘ Keeping in consideration that food self sufficiency will play an important in 2050, and our site is surrounded by major future food producing areas, we decided to change the industrial base to Agro-tech industry which will be the processor of the produced food. We have tried to introduce density in the area to activate the proposed social spaces and to use the infrastructure to full of its potential. Lastly we introduced the concept of industrial ecology on regional & sub site levels. We conceive our industries as a literal implication on industrial park i.e. industries area designed in a way such that public and industries can use same infrastructure simultaneously . Details of the project is explained in the further presentation.

Our site is surrounded with water all around. Kranji reservoir on west side and canal on right hand side . We considered our site as a full catchment area and hence we tried to devise an hydrology strategy which cleans and purify water and store it in the kranji reservoir for potable use. Street sections are redefined, where vehicular roads are made less wide and at the same time central pedestrian garden is designed in a way that it drains the water into canal in rainy days while it behave like a park in regular days.

The brief of the project was prepared very cautiously, so that on one hand it defines the goal of the exercise very precisely and on the other hand it grant total liberty to the students from selection of the site to area program for the project. The main theme of the studio exercise was “Design with resilience� i.e. we needed to design a sustainable building which along with catering to the present demands of certain functional use shall flexible enough to transform into a building of another functional use in the span of 30 years. The present & future use of the building was to be decided by the students depending upon the context. The site was situated in the CBD (Central Business District) area of the city of Shanghai, China. To decide on the functional use of the building, real estate trends along with population trends were studied for the city. As per the current real estate scenario where investing in office sector is much profitable, the building is decided to be designed as an office building with a small fraction of service apartments for present use. Commercial areas are also to be introduced at the lower floors since leisure and retail habits are becoming inseparable and symbiotic with the stressed work culture. The project has been envisaged to be an office building in present scenario and to be transformed into a residential building in 30 years.

Bund being a historically sound area is a blend of old and new structures with the oldest generation of people living in the surrounding residential areas. But due to the rapid increase in floating population has, some of the surrounding residential area had been torn down to accommodate more people. Along with that Shanghai is facing swift increase in ageing population which is estimated to be around 40% of total population by 2030. NORTHERN BUND

Being a water front property situated in the prime CBD zone the site possesses high land value. Property possessing such a high land and historic face value has to be planned in a cautious manner.

SITE RESPONSE Maintaining the Urban porosity at ground level

Project: Adaptation with resilience (September- November (2013) The project has been conceived as an urban relieve in the context of shanghai where urban porosity has been tried to achieve by the virtue of massing at ground floor. Ground floor has been designed as a informal and open plaza where the boundary of private and public has been blurred. One can move in and around the plaza without any obstruction. Longitudinal side of the site was East-West facing, but the presence of tall buildings on the west side keep the west side shaded almost the full day. Hence the N-S orientation of the blocks has been tilted to achieve maximum sun light and to protect the blocks from the northern winter winds.

To achieve the smooth transformation between an office building and the residential building certain key strategies are been devised to tackle certain identified key issues. HVAC and Wet area distribution has been planned in a way such that that there is a seamless transformation between two functional use of the two states. Faรงade of the structure also has been devised such that it provides maximum sunlight penetration and as well as flexible enough to provide a balcony spaces in case of a transformation from office to residential building.

5 years of architecture in School of Planning and Architecture was the starting of my Architectural quest rather than an achievement. I believe being in SPA gave me an advantage over others in my field as under the guidance of highly qualified and experienced faculty members my sensitivity towards design process grew to a mature level. Being it a socio cultural centre, a school design , a full fledged housing project or the final thesis project, every project was backed with relevant research, seminars & workshops. This practice has guided me throughout my professional life & has taken my design sensibilities to the next level.

The hypothesis of the project is to develop a typology in the domain of office complexes where offices are no longer only a cluster of mundane buildings serving as workplace for the competitive workers but also catering to today’s demands of 24x7 flexible work culture, socially interactive spaces integrated with recreational , cultural and leisure opportunities. The project tries to envisage an module that bridges the present resources with future demands. This project at one hand looks into the city core, its architecture, organization and legibility pertaining to the larger audience and their aspirations. On the other hand, it is an attempt to use the primary architectural tools i.e. the form, circulation, & open built relation, to change the typology of the work space.

The availability and yet the non availability of water is a discussion that has never lost its charm. Our fifth year exercise was based on rejuvenating Delhi’s Nullahs & bring about ecological stability on the urban front. The project called for the development of a special scheme for a site which shall be contained or in proximity of one or more Delhi’s natural drain (Nullah) basin, bringing out the utility of water as the base of development. The exercise was backed by a detail study of Delhi water supply and drainage system. Understanding the present scenario of water system & using the same as social element along with optimizing its functional use was our focus for the exercise.

• Delhi can be broadly categorize in 5 basin. The site lies in the north basin, i.e Alipur basin. • The site is in the proximity to the Wazirabad barrage Yamuna, and Oxidation pond and two Nallahs, namely the Radio colony drain and the Najafgarh drain. . • At the site level, our interventions tries to use water as a social element that binds the context and becomes the base of development which seems to be overlooked in present scenario.

Translation of Design interventions •Water being the basis of the interventions: •Almost dead oxidation ponds were to be revived in form of traditional “Ghats”

•Yamuna barrage, was to be the celebrated entrance gateway to Delhi by proposing aqua museum & prominent architectural structures while maintaining the visual connectivity from barrage. •The heavy traffic movement at the barrage was proposed to be shifted to one level up & connecting it to the upcoming signature bridge. The vacant floor of the barrage was to be converted in to a river front hotel. Terrace of the hotel was to be utilized as a green pedestrian friendly open space. •An urban weave along the drain was proposed that physically connects the disparate regions (Wazirabad village & Gopalpur ) Also the roof of the weave provides Kilometres of green space favorable for pedestrian movement.

The brief of the project was simple and precise: ‘ Housing for 2050’. The project opened tremendous opportunities to design, explore, innovate and improvise. The aspect of future needs brought in a number of issues that had to be addressed while a lot others that had to be considered.

Social interaction reduces

The translation process started with anticipation of issues such as accommodation of growing population, favorable spaces for social interaction and social sustainability, energy optimization, providing ground space for agriculture by reducing building footprint and creating land at multiple levels while at the same time not compromising on the quality of built structure. Interventions were based on a detailed study of climate, sunmovements, wind patterns and ecological models and involving the use of technologies such as RFID tags in laundry systems. •A housing module is devised such that the module occupy minimum space on ground leaving the ground free for agriculture and other open space utilization. •By recreating land more than occupied after every six floors the housing blocks encourage people to come out of their houses, enjoy open green spaces and encourage social interaction at the same time. •Heights increases from south to north to gain south sun on community terraces during winter season.

MRPD prototype dwelling is a research project on a site in Malaysia which explores the modular prefabricated construction as an aspect of sustainability by using less Material and time for construction. Three villas for three owners on a single site, designed in a manner such that no privacy is compromised & yet the three villas behave as one single villa by virtue of its mass. Being a west facing site the front of the house has been designed as solid faรงade yet complementing the over all aesthetics of the house. GRC jalli is used as an aesthetic & sun shading element in south, west & east side. 33

The project is to design three auditoriums & the foyer area for the well known cinema brand PVR cinemas. The challenge was to design the space sufficing all the bye laws & sight lines; & using maximum available carpet area, without compromising on the aesthetical front. Working as a chief architect on such a project as allowed me to learn maximum of the construction aspects of the project.

Foyer design

The design proposal for PVR Panipat amalgamates the longestablished tradition with the nouveau resulting in an expression laden with abstract meaning and striking visual experience. PVR Panipat renders this complex topic of deriving the new from the old while providing for an aesthetic access to entertainment. In doing so, it seeks to unfold the various aspects of the topic including the underlying chaos and traditions in an average man’s daily life while creating an environment that addresses him on different sensual levels. The projects of builtup area approx 28000 sqft sits in the setting of a traditional town in Haryana and is envisaged to attract the people from near by villages and residents. The juxtaposition of a modern design with earthy finishes helps to attract the viewers at the same time not dominate the mindset.
