Building Analysis

Abstract Composition

Kolding Campus vs. Collegiate Presbyterian Church

2D Abstraction From our precedent studies, color and geometry were strong design decisions that stood out and were parallel in both buildings. The Kolding campus building used perforated triangular double skin facade system that employs color to add a distinct appeal to the campus. The Presbyterian church does something similar with the use of stained glass and the use of geometric perforations in the wall . We have strings representing other factors such as the horizontality vs verticality differences with the two precedent studies.

The triangle faรงades of Kolding campus and the circular cut-outs of the Presbyterian church were major influences on this design. 6

[20] [40] [60] [80] 3D Abstraction

Building Constraints

For our attempting our abstraction in a third dimension, we took in the triangles of our 2D drawing and made them thick floating rings that interlocked to have a sense of unity, while shining different hues of light around it with the help of coloured plastic diffusing systems. This helped bring our concept of color and geometry out to a fuller sense.

1. The shell must enclose a volume of 8000 cubic feet, with the following restrictions: • Can be a rectangular volume employing dimensional increments of minimum 10’ on any given side, provided that the overall interior volume remains 8000 cubic feet, and that each surface plane remains 400 square feet. (10’ high and 40’ wide / 40’ high and 10’ wide by 20’ deep); 2. Each façade of the cube is to have different ratios of open to closed conditions as follows: - one wall plane is to have 20% openings and 80% opaque conditions; - the adjacent wall plane is to have 40% openings and 60% opaque conditions; - the adjacent wall plane is to have 60% openings and 40% opaque conditions; - the final wall plane (also adjacent to the first) is to have 80% openings and 20% opaque conditions; 3. You may also elect to place a single opening on the roof, not to exceed 10% of the total surface area of that surface plane; 4. Screens/shading devices, etc. can be placed overtop of either open or opaque conditions and do not affect the percentages listed above.

Kalopsia

Initial Iterations

Pavilion Design Project First Iteration

Our first iteration was where we played with the idea of color and expressing its juxtaposition on the facade. We also were making sure that the windows were following the building constraints.

Dark theme with a splash of color

Second Iteration

Here we started to get into using geometric shapes to express the parallels we found in our precedent studies and started to think more about circulation.

Final Iteration

This was our final iteration of the pavilion design. Our Exhibition space was made to fit the artist Ned Kahn. His exhibits comprise of large kinetic façades that we helped exhibit by creating an outdoor exhibition space that surrounded a smaller indoor exhibition space which would house more delicate pieces. The main exhibition space is thus pushed outside the building. Ned Kahn’s use of light was the main inspiration for this facade which expresses it in its own fashion by using stained glazing panels that cast colourful pools of light in the exhibition space thereby complementing the main exhibit pieces.

PAPE BIRD OBSERVATION TOWER

McCormick Tribune Center Spatial Study Spatial Sequences

Understanding space McCormick Center by OMA architects is an interesting space with an almost organic vertical arrangement of geometric spaces. There are multiple spaces that cater to the different needs of students Looking at this space we see a lot of focal spaces drawing our attention like the major rail shell, as well as the different kinds of lighting strategies employed at various parts of the building.

PROJECT PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS Bird observation tower with 2 observation platforms. Each platform should have approximetly 9 sq.m large floor space; • 50m long footbridge; • Low maintenance in terms of effort and costs. • Maxiumum tower height should not exceed 11m;
