I aspire to be a licensed architect in Ontario with the intention of designing spaces that evoke emotion. I believe design needs to be socially responsible and sustainable addressing individual and collective experiences. In my past professional experiences as an Architectural Designer, I focussed primarily on hospitality and residential projects that relied heavily on passive design solutions. In my academic work as a part of my Masters from the United States, my focus was more on Institutional projects which emphasized experiential learning. The thesis I published on it is named “Media Village”

THE CLAY EDIFICE Adaptive re-use Of A heritage tile manufacturing unit into a hospitality building and communal recreational Center
Kozhikode being the business district of Kerala, Malabar Tilery was once one of the most sought-after business properties of the time primarily focussed on the manufaturing of clay products. The project was constructed around the 1950’s was up and running until the late 1980’s with the most advanced technologies of the time and served builders all over the southern part of India. To achieve the feat of providing the construction industry with the most durable products with a reasonable pricing, the building had very unique characteristics in terms of architecture and functionality. It had elements ranging from strategically located airtight rooms to heat clay at high temperature to decked wooden floor designed for the vapour pass through without damaging them, After the property was sold in the early ‘90s, it remained abandoned for over 2 decades and coincidently, the firm I worked during the time (Prasanth and Associated)gained the opportunity for its adaptive re-use and I was in charge of the development of the project in terms of conceptualization and detailing.
DESIGN EVOLUTION The project was facing the Ferook River which drained into the Indian Ocean. Existing Structure
The river was the key element in the redevelopment of the project due to its importance in the community where lots of fishing and trading occured. The river was taken into the site which was approximately 6’’ from the water level. The site stepped down into the river replicating the temple architecture where the steps came down to the ponds. River brought in to the Site Meeting/Ceremony halls
Spa Facilitues
Extended Corridor forming an entry and extending lobby
Special house boats were designed by another section in the firm to take the people around for fishing and sightseeing The light green blocks contain the waiting areas for the boat trip which includes a libray containing information about the city and the sights. The right end of the section contains recerational and indoor sport areas overlooking the river. The dark green block is a restaurant primarily for breakfast buffets overlooking the river with its own private kitchen.
River facing eatery
The main additions in the existing buildings were an extended corridor where people walk in from the main entrance, the meeting/ function areas and spa facilities are are arranged around the pool.
Site sloping down Waiting Area/ Recreation
N
MASTER PLAN The design retains the existing building with all the key structural and aesthetical elements and merely adds to the structure for greater stability. The Machines used for the manufacturing process are unmoved from its original position and is emphasized by polishing and painting. They are used as interior elements in the lobby that brough in the history of the place. Water bodies and green pockets are provided within the building with skylights serving it from the roof and other strategic locations. The central airtight core used for heating the bricks is used as an exhibition area. The clay hollow brick blocks are used as the paving material and bricks for flooring on the lower floor. Concrete and waterproofing is used for the structure of the waterbodies within the building. Toilets are prefabricated and placed in the building as a separate element. In the lobby area it appearsto be floating on the waterbody. The product storage rooms at the periphery of the building is used as staff housing and office spaces.
SECTIONAL AXONOMETRY The upper floors have been converted into rooms. The existing wooden deck flooring is retained with sound proofing added to it through the addition of false ceiling/ bulkhead below each for floor for more privacy between rooms. The existing rafter and truss rood system is strengthened by replacing few of the damaged trusses and ridgeboards. Additional steel secltions added as reinforcement to support the floors on heavy traffic areas and in the core structural areas around the chimney and the elevator shaft.
SECTION THROUGH INTERIOR WATERBODY Skylights are provided to serve the water bodies and green areas within the building. In addition to this, it also brings in natural light into the rooms facing the interior court creating a unique ambiance. The intent to have either a forest or water view for all the rooms was satisfied by this design solution.

CHARACTERISTICS ADDITIONS
OF
BUILIDNG
New building additions enhance the existing building in terms of functionality and character. The additions are minimal, preventing the site degradation as much as possible using shallow foundations and low rises. To the left is the break-down of a typical building addition with similar rafter roofing systems and brick walls. Vertical shading is provided to prevent harsh the east and west sun. The goal was to make any new addition seem like it was always a part of the old structure seamlessly blending representing an intersection of paths of the well-worn and new beginning.
RIVER FACING EATERY The existing development being a few yards away from the waterbody, it was important to bring some architectural elements closer to the water, apart from bringing a part of the river into the site, This led to the addition of an eatery, waiting rooms ,and a library with large north openings overlooking the river. It serves both the hotel and local people who come out for boating or fishing. The place also allows people to cook their catch from the fishing trips at certain times of the day. For hotel customers, it doubles down as a breakfast area for the ones who prefer the river view. The materials used for the project are recycled clay products from the factory with details of wood, concrete, steel, stone, and terracotta.
GOKULAM GALLERIA Mixed-use commercial development forming the town center vitalizing the area
The project is situated on the busy freeway that connected 2 major cities. The intention was to design a building that formed a leisure stop for the travelers which comprised of retail shops, cinemas , and eateries. It was important for the project to have an imposing appearance as it had to be visible from multiple levels of roads and bridges that passed along the direction.

To the left is the interior view of the mall looking up into the skylight at the atrium. The skylight brings in diffused light because of its angle towars the north.
THE NEW DAWN Adaptive re-use of heritage home
The site emcompasses a house over 100 years old. The project intends to revitalize the building and design the additions around this retaining it as the focal point. The design intends to create an intersection of paths of the worn-out and the new beginnings. The part of the resort with the old structure is structurally enhanced using steel sections but the interiors are merely touched up retaining its nostalgia. The additions contain lobby, recreational and dwelling spaces with all the code requirements.

Additional floors are added to the block capable of higher loads where rooms have been placed facing the streets on either side. The facade has been redesigned to blend with the refurbished heritage building by the use of locally available stones. Steel sections are exposed as an aesthetic element that coexists with the traditional design.
URBAN CONGLOMERATE Mixed-use high-rise integrating the scattered retail, hospitality, and office spaces
The scattered retail shops in the neighborhood of Thamarassery were required to be unified more efficiently due to a govt. sanctioned road widening plan. The client’s requirement was to integrate the existing retail stores in the properly into a shaded semi-open space and to add office spaces to be rented out on the floors above. In addition to the above, the client had approached us with an idea of a hotel project on a separate property. Hence, after working out the concept we decided to integrate all these programs into a mixed-use building with separate entryways for the shopping center and the hotel. The project was developed into an open shopping center with the floor above cantilevered out, creating shade from the heavy rains experienced in the area. The section of the site away from the main street is converted into a highrise building connecting the shopping center to encase a hotel with a restaurant, bar, and other recreational facilities.

MASTER PLAN The stores are at the street level and one floor above. They are visible and accessible from major streets on either side joined by a connecting road. The basement and the street level parking are separated from the hotel customers and the store visitors with separate entrances. The green areas around the site are integrated into the project by creating pedestrian pathways from the parks through the building leading to the adjacent park. This strategy creates the opportunity for the park visitors to see and visit the shopping center conveniently located in their path of evening walks if they please.
Hotel - South View
The hotel contains a bar and a restaurant overlooking the park below and the city beyond. Large overhangs are provided on the south side for protection against the harsh southern sun. Services and other circulation areas are strategically located for unobstructed views of the surroundings The staggered floor plates create distinct spaces within the building with an interesting play of light reaching the areas in unique ways.
The Interior of the shopping center uses modern and rustic elements as opposed to typical marble and stone. The floors are concrete with corton steel wall facades with glass and metallic elements. The unobstructed view from the shopping center to the adjacent street make it visually accessible and easy to identify from most parts of the neighborhood.
FARM RETREAT Holiday Home overlooking the farm
The residence is designed for relaxation and gathering overlooking the client-owned farmland facing north. The project is conceived as a central open space with multiple gathering areas interconnected, a semi-private gathering area containing a kitchen for the women to socialize, and private retreat spaces. Large windows open up to the courtyard which overlooks the farm. Additional windows with large overhangs are provided right across for cross ventillation. The house is carefully positioned to take advantage of the diverse views all around it and the retaining wall protects the sloped rippling land form. The vertical and horizontal lines in the facade treatment bring in visual harmony and the colors replicated the rocky mountains and the blue skies where the building disappears into.
The green areas are brought into the residence blurring the boundaries between the inside and outside. Carefully placed skylight brings in light to serve these green zones that are naturally vegetated. The doubl- height central area is separated by the staircase and a seemingly floating corridor connects both wings of the house without obstructing views The pool extends to the edge of the retaining wall and visually disappears into the farmland. The materials used are painted and treated wood, steel beams, concrete, and locally available stone for interior walls.

The south side opens into an outdoor area protected by a compound wall providing privacy from the next-door residents. The long axis leads to the breakfast kitchen and a separate the heavy-duty one which is to be mostly used by the maids when there are more guests to serve. PLAZA CINEMA Re-thinking cinema experience
Plaza cinema located in the city of Pune is a mixed-use development comprising multiplexes, restaurants, plazas and a media library aimed at making the cinema viewing more enjoyable. It aims to create a typology where the commercial structure that energizes the street also act as the shaded plaza that connects the city to the neighboring park.
ACADEMIC WORK
Massing is done with respect to the site periphery and street lines leaving the central area open.
The massing is raised to create a passage connecting the street to the green space.
The stepped theatre area is placed along the elevated part of the form and tilted concrete with slits are used as the skin.
At the street entry, the roof above the plaza is flat which seamlessly connects to a slanted roof that takes the shape of the form
The form of the theatre creates a shaded outdoor space below. It also acts as a passage through the building to the park. The building’s function and form work together to create a space where the people can engage in multiple activities before and after the movie creating an open mall of sorts.
The development starts with a very linear shaded space tieing different parts of the building together. This space continues into the building creating a series of open and shaded areas that lead up to the park. The programs include restaurants, library, coffee shops, street food stalls, etc besides the theatre along the way through the plaza.

BEDROOM RENOVATION
The intent of the bedroom remodel was to de-clutter the space and yet make it functional. The large space was divided into 3 zones. The first part comprises of the bed and the bed bench. The second one has the living space with 2 single seater chairs facing the TV over console storage doubling as a TV unit. The third zone is a walk-in closet separated by a curtain.
The entire room is painted white to pop out the furniture used and plywood is paneled three-quarters of the wall and painted white to create another layer of texture. Golden and wooden accents are used for light fixtures and furniture.
APARTMENT INTERIOR
The objective of the design seamlessly makes the kitchen a part of the living by replicating the materials used in the space. Due to practical reasons, the kitchen had to be closed off to prevent the smell from entering the main area and hence a non- reflective glass partition was used. This made it appear very open and was lit up by the natural light from the living. The black marble used in the living was used as the countertop and backsplash and the wooden ceiling in the living replicated the overhead cabinetry.
