MASTERPLAN_CITY GRAIN In the very first stage of developing our masterplan, we were mostly inspired by the historic grain of the City Saw Mill. We also agreed that maintaining the existing present grain and context should be our key priority. Therefore, we decided to keep most of the pre-existing house in Thomas Street then Ryan’s Town House scheme would follow that line and giving back part of their back yard by opening a small lane in between. Our group also made an effort in containing the elongated plaza from the City saw mill arch in order to found three key civic space which are the pop up market and two green space for the inhabitants near Francis Street. From that, we started to develope individual scheme in attempt to create a space which feels very much like an extension of the cityscape rather than a new entity placed within it. Noticing that there were not many activities for the resident beside the Chadwick Hardware store. Our group had decided to give everyone a civic purpose to re activate the site. For instance, Jake was keen on keeping part of the Chadwick hardware store and the old pub so he developed a scheme that focus on renovating this two pre-existing building and bond it with the new apartment layout. Aoife provides a sport center which facilitated with swimming pool and gym. Nhu’s Beauty academy can give the residents a place for a make-over and opportunity to learn about beauty industry. A long with Aoife swimming pool is Katie’s Bakery grocer that can provide freshly bake goods for people everyday and snack for the people coming out from the gym after a workout. On the left, Kristoffer’s Gallery and Esme’s Community center form a green space which holds the corner and not only brings up a communal space for new residents but also giving back a green space for the pre-existing building in Francis Street.

This project aims to create intimate housing spaces in the city centre and to encourage activity and interaction along street level. Located along the rear ends of the existing Thomas St. buildings this project comprises of a housing block directly built along the Thomas St. buildings and another block along the new shared park space which contains that space, between the two blocks is a new street where the entrances to the housing blocks are located. These blocks are sunk into the ground to allow more light to reach deep into the plan and also to create a separation between the street and the exterior spaces along the street. As well as these exterior spaces along the street, each household has a fully private courtyard to support this idea of intimate spaces in the city centre. _ Ryan Sanchez_

while designing this project, I think is needed to response to sun path and the edges looking toward neighbors by installing diagonal wall and taking inspiration of different window scapes. Also, there was not alot of activities happening in the city saw mill, there for I try to activate the ground with beauty complex for the resident and semi-sunken photography hall. Then, attempt to connect with the context of the site by: activate the greenspace shared between neighbors and integrate the roof scape.

Inside, the user is met with tall ceilings and luxurious south light which shines in through the roof light. This feature sits above a generous void that breaks up the large footprint of the building and provides light and ventilation all the way down to the basement bakery. The user can be seated looking directly down into the inner workings of a bakers world below. The baked goods are sold in the grocer and café on the ground floor. _ Katie Keenan_

My aim for this project was to design a new housing scheme for the already existing residents and to create a building that interacts with the surrounding community and the new masterplan that my group and I designed. I also decided to include a gym and pool space in my design, this was not only for the residents but for the people in the surrounding community. I thought it would be important to include a pool and gym as it is a facility that would be accessible to everyone in the liberties, not just one specific group of people

With that the building I am designing is a mix-use between a Gallery and office space/ education center for the An Taisce group. An Taisce is an environmental group that’s currently inhabiting the building within in my plot, so I decided to create a nice ground floor use for them. I also want them to control the civic territory outside my building. I want to create a wildlife garden/ wildlife sanctuary theming with different animals and plant where the residents and community can interact with. For my upperfloor I will be design dual aspect apartment units with an interactive stair core. The units will be composed of north facing wintergarden and a south facing balcony. _Kristoffer SanDiego_
