Considering the importance of civic ground, we set out to design a series of external spaces alongside new building blocks which would accommodate a mix of uses, both private and public. Our focus concentrated on the importance of one’s connection to nature and the outside world, one that is often looked upon with a negative view due to our local climate. We intended to rekindle this connection through the built form of our individual projects as well as the broader network of civic spaces formed between our buildlings. Promoting sustainable communities was paramount in our masterplanning. We wanted to contribute positively to the area of the Liberties. Choosing the appropriate building type for each project was important in achieveing this. Luke’s butchers and urban farm gives back to the community while his renovated Mallinn House provides new and safe housing for the youth. A new block of changing rooms facilitates the once deprived football pitch fronting the building. Ipa’s hardware store repairs the Chadwicks shop which has been removed. She also includes a diverse mix of residentional units which face on to a green space which serves both her and Luke’s buildings. Alex provides a study hub to the adjacent student accommodation block, forming a direct connection to the existing city fabric. Residential units overlook the newly carved civic spaces below while a rooftop garden allows for skill-sharing between the residents and students. The street edge of Swift’s Alley is repaired with Aaron’s band of commercial units with accommodation above. Neil works with the surrounding context and extends on to the exisitng primary school facing Carman’s Hall. His building, along with Aaron’s, forms a new civic space to serve the students of the school and the wider public. Conor renovates the other existing Mallinn House and provides an additional residential block. These two buildings form a new external space between them which serves the ground floor market of Conor’s project. In the centre of the masterplan, Mike plants an achor to the scheme which takes the form of a bank. The building dominates the streetscape and acts as a landmark within the city which can easily be navigated. This faces out on to the main square, encircled by a canopy which shelteres the perimeter of the area. The square is the focal point of the masterplan in which the public can gather and communites can thrive.

Promoting sustainable communities in the pursuit of happiness, wellbeing, and rehabilitation of both people and the built environment, with a focus on the lost connection between the individual and the natural environment.”
