head coach

BRAD JETT

He’ll

be the first one

to admit he doesn’t like to take credit.

In the rare cases when he does, he’ll tell you he doesn’t enjoy it. But with all South Harrison head coach Brad Jett’s list of accomplishments holds, there is plenty to brag about. About to embark on his 15th season as head football coach of the Hawks, Jett enters the 2012 season as the secondwinningest active coach in Harrison County with a 81-67 career record, 23 wins over Sam Alvaro of Notre Dame and 56 wins by Robert C. Byrd head coach Bruce Carey, who came out of retirement this season. The 2012 season will be the Liberty High School graduate’s 30th year with the Hawks’ program after serving as an assistant coach under Harrison County’s second all-time winningest coach Gary Barnette, who coached from the school’s inaugural year in 1965 until retiring following the 1997 season. Prior to that, Jett was the head man for South Harrison’s 7th- and 8thgrade program. Together, Barnette and Jett are the

Frank Loria Award winner, given annually to Harrison County’s best football player, which he earned in 2000. In 1999, Hall and fellow running back Drew Toth paired to finish first and second in the Big 10 Conference in both rushing yards and points scored. Toth joined Hall as the Hawks’ 3,000-yard rushing club among Jett-coached players. Having earned a reputation for his hardnosed defense and misdirection Doublewing offense, Jett has had individual running backs eclipse 200 yards rushing in a single game seven times since taking over in 1998. On 16 different occassions have the Hawks rushed for over 400 yards in a single game, including rushing for a Jett-high 527 yards in a 52-12 victory over nearby rival Doddridge County in 2005. Defensively, Jett’s Hawks have shutout opponents in 19 games. His team’s best overall effort likely came in a 12-7 win, however, in freezing temperatures in Point Pleasant, W.Va., in November of 2001. That’s when Jett’s 14th-ranked Hawks upset No. 3 Wahama in typical Brad Jett fashion – out-toughing the “finesse” White Falcons on their home turf. The win advanced the

JETT’S 81 WINS TRAILS CAREY BY 56 WINS. only two head coaches in the school’s 47 years of existence, leading the Hawks to a 277-189-2 all-time record. The pair is the second winningest head coaching duo in Harrison County history behind only Bridgeport’s Wayne Jamison and Carey. The plethora of Harrison County standouts nurtured under Jett is nearly unmatched. In his 14 seasons, Jett has guided 10 players to earn first-team all-state recognition, 17 players to second-team recognition, and 30 players to honorable mention all-state status. Among the leaders of that group was 2000 graduate running back Ben Hall, who finished his four years as a Hawk with nearly 4,000 career rushing yards and 46 touchdowns. The two-team first-team ClassAA All-State selection was the school’s last

Hawks to the Class-A State Semifinals in Wheeling. An appearance at Wheeling Island Stadium capped off the Hawks’ first season back in Class-A, finishing with an 8-2 regular season record and a Mason Dixon Conference Championship in the Hawks’ first year in their new league. On Sept. 3, 2010, just two days after the death of his one of his best friends and long-time Hawk football public address announcer Ron Fisher, Jett won his 74th career game by beating Gilmer County, 6326. The victory was one of four times South Harrison scored at least 40 points in 2010. Jett has endured three seasons of at least nine wins including back-to-back 10-2 seasons in 2004 and 2005, falling just one win shy of reaching the Class-A State Cham-

pionship game in both seasons. Five players from those two seasons went on to earn Class-A First Team All-State honors including former assistant coach, tailback and safety Zach Hayhurst and offensive lineman Silas Belt, the only two-time first-team selection in school history, along with wingbacks Cory Morrison and Kevin Fury. But, only for the third time in his 15year head coaching career, Jett will be leading a senior class in 2012 that has yet to pay a visit to the West Virginia State Playoffs. Despite having only seven seniors on the junior and freshman-dominated roster, Jett is hoping to get back to the TOP: Jett with playoffs that has escaped him quarterback Cole since the 2006 season. He serves as vice president of the West Virginia Coaches Association. Jett resides in West Milford with his wife, June. They have two children – Elizabeth and Brianna, both graduates of South Harrison High School.
