Goliath’s Charges Stayed The staff and owners of Goliath’s Saunatel are breathing a sigh of relief today (February 2nd). It’s still business as usual, after the 3 year trial incited by the Police Raid back in December 2002. We received word that the charges had been stayed for 1 year for all parties. We spoke to one of the owner’s of Goliaths, Darrell Zakreski, while he hosted a celebration party at the Texas Lounge to express his happiness with the court’s decision. After the court’s finding today, he believes there is little likelihood that charges will ever be laid. One of the key reasons the case was stayed apparently came from a survey conducted by Bruce Freeman, a PhD candidate in Anthropology at the University of Calgary. The survey was given to residents of the Beltline district, in the immediate area of the Saunatel. It showed that the Police’s grounds of “intolerable behaviour” were not founded by public opinion, and therefore demonstrated that Goliath’s had done nothing to violate community standards. This is something that we would have normally left until next issue since it occurred this month, however the news was simply too good to pass up! For anyone that’s been scared of using a bathhouse because of this incident, the standard set today should hopefully restore your faith. Score one for homo-kind! GayCalgary.com Reader’s Choice Survey It’s not over yet – the survey is still going strong! We had 3 very happy winners from our January 22nd Earlybird Draw, and we still have 2 more winners to draw this March 1st. We have to give away a $50.00 Gift Certificate for Swirl Body Products and Treatments, as well as a $150.00 Gift Certificate for the Bay Downtown! Will one of them be yours? Well it won’t be if you haven’t filled out a survey yet! Grab a copy of last month’s issue, or fill the survey out online at www.gaycalgary.com. It only takes about 5-10 minutes, so don’t forget! Ballot boxes will remain at all the same locations from last month: The Backlot, Calgary Eagle, Detour, Goliath’s, Indulge, Metro Boyzown, Money-Pennies, The Rekroom, Solar Café, Texas Lounge, Twisted Element, and the Verge. The envelopes provided in the side compartment are pre-addressed if you’d rather mail yours in. Even with February’s issue

out, we will maintain a pile of last month’s issues beside the ballot boxes for your convenience. There was apparently some confusion on our methods of choosing people to be listed in several of our questions. For instance, we asked management of the bars and clubs to nominate one bartender, house queen, and DJ, however we were lax if they happened to give two bartenders instead. Though this has excluded a number of very deserving people, we wish to remind our readers that you can still vote for them by using the OTHER field, and writing in their name. As for the Drag performers, we took our list of local performers from 2004. They’ve moved to a new location in a much nicer part of town, and will be opening on February 4th. They were supposed to be our business review this month, however due to their change of address, we’ve had to postpone them for a later date. See their ad on page 20 for their new address and contact information. Equal Marriage With Valentines day coming up fast, do you want to pop the question to your beloved by saying “Will you enter into a non-religious civil union with me?” Just doesn’t have the same ring to it…

Highlights this Month Now on a lighter note, the ISCCA is hosting “Broken Hearted”, a Bachelor and Bachelorette auction at Twisted Element on the 16th (See their ad on page 46). Also, the Backlot is starting their Minute Man Speed Dating event the 2nd Saturday of every month. If Valentines Day is no joy for you, these are excellent opportunities to make up for it! Also, don’t forget to go down and celebrate the Eagle’s 3rd Anniversary on the 19th, and for all you ladies out there, Girlsgo is putting on the RED dance on the 12th. There are tons of events this month for Valentines and otherwise, so check our Events Listing on page 16, or visit our online Events Calendar at www.gaycalgary.com to make sure you don’t miss anything you’ll regret later! GayCalgary.com has sponsored advertising in our Magazine and our TV screens over the past 2 months for Canadians for Equal Marriage. They are reviewed in this issue on page 10. Most of what the average person knows about this matter is what they have seen on TV. For instance, it’s well known that several religious groups are strongly objecting to the prospect of allowing same sex marriage, saying that it violates the “Traditional Definition” or “Sanctity” of marriage. We decided to do a little research into this topic since they seem to be clinging so vehemently to these words as if they are immutable. One phrase we found particularly interesting was featured in the Tidbits section of www.christiangays.com, which says “Same-sex, same-gender unions have been celebrated in the church throughout history, dating back as early as 514 B.C., long before heterosexual marriages became a sacrament in 1215 [A.D.]!” Even today in several cultures, “Traditional” marriage is simply a means of transferring the property of a woman to the man that she marries. There’s a huge wealth of facts out there that can punch more holes in these right-wing protests than Swiss cheese – it’s just a matter of finding them and educating people about this other side of the story. Some other good places to start are www.equal-marriage.ca, www.samesexmarriage.ca, and www.godlovesfags.com. Arm yourself for the next time your straight buddies go on a rant!

Commemorating The Liberation of Auschwitz: The Invisibility of Gay Victims By Stephen Lock

A disturbing number of Canadians (over fifty percent) are not even aware six million Jews were gassed and cremated at Auschwitz and other Nazi death camps. Likely even more Canadians are totally unaware that amongst the Jewish victims of the Nazi machine, there were an estimated 600,000 to 1,000,000 gay men sent to concentration camps and slave labour camps, and worked to death. Those who survived that were sent to Auschwitz. The pre-Nazi German penal code, which dated from the Prussian era, criminalized homosexuality, specifically male homosexuality, under Paragraph 175. Lesbianism was never a criminal offence. This statute called for six months imprisonment for consensual adult homosexual activity and a permanent criminal record. When the Nazis came to power they maintained the existing penal code and used it, along with other programs, to round up homosexuals by the thousands and send them off to the concentration camps such as the Sachsenhausen brickworks. In the three years from 1931 to 1933 some 2,319 men had been convicted under Paragraph 175. During the years 1937 to 1939, after Hitler rose to power and was Chancellor, the total number of convictions rose to 24,450. In 1935 the Nazis issued a decree that all “degenerates” were to be sterilized. The compulsory sterilization of homosexuals, epileptics, schizophrenics, the mentally retarded and others was, effectively, castration. On October 11, 1939 the SS-Reichsfuehrer, Heinrich Himmler, issued a call for homosexuality to be “eliminated” and for the full coercive power of the State to be used towards that goal. Homosexuality undermined the strength and beauty of the Aryan race and was an evil akin to the mixing of the races (i.e. Jews and Gentiles). If one was convicted under Paragraph 175 it almost certainly meant automatic transfer to a concentration camp following one’s legal sentence in a regular prison. Tens of thousands of gay men were sent to camps like Sachsenhausen in this manner, but many more were sent directly to the camps by the Gestapo, the Nazi secret police, without trial simply on suspicion of being gay or upon the Gestapo being informed someone was gay; even the mere

gaycalgary.com magazine

accusation of being a homosexual would be enough to ensure arrest. Auschwitz was a death camp, not merely a concentration camp. It was specifically designed to murder and eliminate thousands of people a day, first by gassing them in what was ostensibly delousing showers, then reducing the bodies to ash in huge crematoria on the camp grounds. This process happened 24 hours a day, with people being immediately dispatched to the showers upon disembarking from the cattle cars that constantly rolled into Auschwitz. This was Shoah…the Holocaust, the consuming by flame. Camps like Sachsenhausen were concentration and slave labour camps. These camps were designed to literally work prisoners – be they homosexuals, Poles, Roma (Gypsies), political prisoners, or other undesirables – to death through inhuman working conditions, beatings, torture, unsanitary conditions, crowding, and little or no food. Homosexuals were never sent en masse directly to Auschwitz, like Jews were. Gay men were certainly amongst the hundreds of thousands of non-Jews to die in the gas chambers at Auschwitz, of that there is no doubt. The fate of homosexual inmates was to die a slow miserable death at the hands of their Nazi masters in the ‘death-pit’ of the brick-works, slogging through freezing mud, sick, starving, and beaten. Sachsenhausen was a Level 3 camp, meaning the average life expectancy after arrival was measured in a matter of months. Both Himmler and the Reich’s Minister of Justice ordered that certain categories of prisoner, including homosexuals, were to be worked to death in these camps. The ‘surplus’ of homosexuals, those who somehow managed to survive Sachsenhausen and Belsen and the other slave labour camps, these were the men who ended up in Auschwitz and the crematoria. The Nazis were perversely efficient and categorized everything. While Jews were forced to wear the Yellow Star of David (a yellow triangle point down overlaid by a yellow triangle point up), homosexuals wore an inverted pink triangle (point down). Political prisoners wore a red circle. Social pariahs, that sometimes included lesbians but were mainly common criminals and hobos, wore a black inverted triangle. Every category of prisoner had a badge and even in the camps there was a hierarchy amongst the prisoners. Those wearing the pink triangle

were at the lowest end of the spectrum, even worse than Jews and Gypsies. Other prisoners would abuse them, beat them, report them, push them out of the barracks; even kill them. Unlike the figures for the number of Jews killed by the Nazis, we don’t have accurate figures for the number of homosexuals the Nazis murdered. Part of the reason for this is, as the Russians and other Allied forces moved into German territory towards the end of the war, the SS began destroying records. We do know, though, that during the 12-year Nazi regime nearly 50,000 men were convicted of homosexuality. The majority of these men ended up in concentration camps, often without any legal proceedings whatsoever. Following the liberation of Auschwitz and the discovery of the extent of the genocide against the Jews, stories and reports and news articles and documentaries were made. The state of Israel exists, in large part, because of the horrors committed against Jews under Nazism and Fascism. The story of the Jews was, and is, told. When British (including Canadian), Russian, and American soldiers liberated the camps, those prisoners who were homosexual did not benefit from the largesse shown to Jews, socialists, communists, Jehovah Witnesses, gypsies, and other groups because homosexuality was a criminal offence in Britain, Russia and the United States. Many of the gay men ‘liberated’ from the camps were sent back into prison or carried the stigma of “criminal” for the rest of their lives. Paragraph 175 remained in the German penal code, in both East Germany and West Germany, well into the 1960s, when it was finally repealed. Gay survivors of the Nazi regime could not, dare not, speak out. For more information on the gay experience under the Nazis, The Men With The Pink Triangle, by Heinz Heger, published by Alyson Publications Inc., is an excellent source. Stephen Lock is the Regional Director for Egale Canada and the Calgary Representative for The Canadians For Equal Marriage Coalition. He is also the producer and host of a semi-monthly glbt radio show, Speak Sebastian, airing at 9pm on the 1st and rd Wednesday of the month on CJSW FM 90.9. Just Ask Nina!

The Dish who dishes advice By Nina Tron Dear Nina, Some friends and I were sitting around the other day and we were wondering where the term “Dildo” comes from, and we thought why not ask Nina? So do you know where the term came from? The Dick Dock Dear Dick Dock, Wow, this is certainly one of the more colorful questions I have received. I did say I was here to help, so here we go! I hope this isn’t a sign of your own Valentines celebrations… In my research I came (no pun intended) across some very interesting facts. For example did you know that

there is a small town right here in Canada named Dildo? Located in Newfoundland, population 1200 - that must be one happy town! But to be honest, it is believed that the term “dildo” originates from the Italian word “diletto” which in turn originates from the Latin term “delectare” - to allure or delight. The term originated in America from Italian American slang, and as they say, the rest is history. I must say that “dildo” isn’t the most pleasant sounding word in the dictionary. On the flip side the, user of such an item will be making many pleasurable sounds themselves – enough to make up for the unpleasantry of the word itself! Happy Valentines Day to you all! Love Nina I am here for you, and I look forward to hearing from you all, I can be reached at: AskNina@gaycalgary.com or Mailed to Ask Nina c/o GayCalgary.com Magazine, Suite 403, 215 14th Avenue SW, Calgary, Alberta T2R 0M2. You can also watch Nina every Sunday night and events through out the week at Twisted Element, 1006 11th Avenue SW. Other than the question, all personal information (i.e. name, address, E-mail) will remain confidential. GayCalgary.com does reserve the right to alter questions for brevity and content. CANADiANS For EQuAL MArriAgE The GLBT community’s voice for marriage equality. By Jason Clevett

It is rare that one hopes to see their own organization disbanded. However in the case of Canadians for Equal Marriage, there will be no better feeling than the day their existence is no longer necessary. It will mean a long, hard battle has come to an end, and Gay Marriage is legal. “We can’t wait to close shop,” Laurie Arron told GayCalgary.com hours before Bill C-38 was tabled in Par-

10

gaycalgary.com magazine

liament. Laurie is the Political Coordinator for Canadians for Equal Marriage and Director of Advocacy for EGALE. The group formed as an offshoot of EGALE Canada’s Equal Marriage committee in the summer of 2003. “After the Ontario court decision in the summer of 2003, our opponents really came on strong with huge resources against equal marriage. EGALE and other supporters of the legislation decided we needed to have a single purpose group who could focus on the legislation and devote significant resources to it. In August of

2003 we had a meeting [with] the United Church, PFLAG Canada (Parents, Friends and Family of Lesbians and Gays), and others to form Canadians for Equal Marriage. The campaign is a coalition of groups focusing purely on passing the legislation, and fold after it is passed.” Since then, other groups and unions have joined in. Canadians for Equal Marriage has been active on many fronts. “One has been at the grassroots level, mobilizing supporters to contact their MP’s and using our website to make it easy to do that. We went out and found other supportive organizations who would join in the fight, such as the Canadian Federation of Students, the Canadian Labour Congress, the Canadian Psychological Association, the Canadian Association of University Teachers, and the Canadian Association of Social Workers, among others. Some have officially joined us while others just work informally. We have also met with MP’s to provide them with as much information as possible to understand the issue and why Equal Marriage is the right thing to do. We were active in the Federal Election in trying to get candidates who were pro-marriage [elected].” While the organization is based in Ontario, recently moving its office from Toronto to Ottawa, it has worked across Canada to get its message out. This has allowed them to truly grasp some of the differences among the provinces.

pacted, and the charter of values and how equal marriage flows from it. They confirmed that the lower court rulings are the law in BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and the Yukon...” Canadians for Equal Marriage hasn’t been involved in the Provincial battles. “Those challenges have been EGALE. Canadians for Equal Marriage doesn’t get involved in legal challenges. EGALE has played a large role in those decisions. “ Although at times it may seem that Canadians do not want gay marriages, Arron says the organization’s experience has been a positive one. “The majority of Canadians support the legislation and we have heard a lot of positive feedback. However there is a very loud and strong minority out there, backed largely by the religious right wing. It is a last ditch attempt on their part to take away our right to marry. For them this is about maintaining a stigma about homosexuality. You heard Cardinal Aloysius Ambrozic say that the bill passing ‘will be teaching that homosexual activity and heterosexual activity are morally equivalent’. In Calgary, Bishop Fred Henry has said ‘an evil act remains an evil act whether it is performed in public or private,’ compared homosexuality to adultery, prostitution and pornography, …undermining the foundations of the family, and expressed the need to suppress homosexual behavior. It

“The…country is split in a number of ways, such as religion, but it is a very urban vs. rural divide. There will be MP’s from Alberta who will vote for the legislation, they will be from Edmonton and Calgary. There will be Ontario MP’s who vote against, none from Downtown Toronto or Ottawa. Some provinces are more supportive, Quebec and the West Coast especially, but Saskatchewan, Alberta and Newfoundland are the least. In terms of our focus, it is now on the key ridings, and [we] have had a lot of activity in Edmonton and Calgary.” On December 9, 2004 the Supreme Court of Canada handed down its decision, making clear that Parliament can pass a law extending equal marriage across the country, and that doing so will not violate anyone’s freedom of religion or any other Charter right. It explicitly said religious officials cannot be compelled to perform civil or religious same-sex marriages that go against their religious beliefs. It also said that the Charter protects against “the compulsory use of sacred places for the celebration of such marriages” or being “compelled to otherwise assist in the celebration of same-sex marriages.” Charitable tax status is clearly protected. It was a great moment for the organization, although they knew the battle was far from over. “That was a green light for the equal marriage legislation. The Supreme Court affirmed that Parliament can pass this legislation, that religious freedom is not im-

gaycalgary.com magazine

is quite clear that this fight isn’t just about marriage but our place in society. This is by far the biggest fight that the LGBT community has ever encountered, but we all expected that.” Other opponents have argued that by changing the definition of marriage from “a man and a woman” to “two persons” could lead to polygamy and incestuous marriages. Arron disagrees. “Those are simply red herrings. In the Ontario decision, the Metropolitan Church of Toronto, which is primarily LGBT, argued that their freedom of religion was violated because Gays and Lesbian’s could not marry in a civil ceremony, and the court said ‘The two are different things and your freedom of religion is not violated by that.’ So even though the court agreed with the equality claim they disagreed on that claim. The argument for Polygamy is based on freedom of Religion and that some religions support it. The idea…that civil marriage could infringe on that was rejected by the courts. Also there are problems with polygamy, namely that it suppresses women which goes against the charter, whereas equal marriage for same sex couples enhances qualities between the sexes, and the courts have found that there were no detrimental effects on anybody by allowing us to marry. They are very different cases.”

gaycalgary.com magazine

There is a very real possibility when Parliament votes on this legislation that it could be defeated. The Globe and Mail recently surveyed Members of Parliament. 139 MPs said they would vote in favour of legislation, 118 MPs said they would vote against the legislation, and 49 are undecided, or would not state a position. To pass into law, the bill needs the support of 154 MPs. “If the bill is defeated we are going to see many years of fighting. The opponents of equal marriage will be emboldened and will not stop at the defeat of the legislation, they will seek to roll back our right to marry, invoke the notwithstanding clause, constitutional amendments and referendums. Groups have already been set up to pursue these. If the legislation passes this will be over, if it doesn’t we will be fighting for a long time.” However, despite that possibility, Arron and the organization are confident that the bill will pass, and will be another step further towards equality. “Our vision is a world where there is no stigma to being LGBT. Marriage being exclusively heterosexual is a huge barrier to eliminating that stigma. I think once we have that right, the stigma will not be completely eliminated, but you will see a significant increase in acceptance of homosexuality, bisexuals and trans-identified people. It won’t happen instantly but it will be a major watershed in

our acceptance by society, and life will improve for us.” Now is the time to root for the LGBT community and their friends, families and supporters, to step up to the plate and ensure that Canadian MP’s, especially those who have not yet decided, hear from them. Information on contacting MP’s is on Canadians for Equal Marriages website www.equal-marriage.ca. “I would say that the vote count is very close, and it is really important that we make our voices heard because our opponents are. We need to contact, phone and meet with our MP’s and respectfully tell them this is the right thing to do.” Canadian’s For Equal Marriage 233 Gilmour Street, Ground Floor Ottawa, ON K2P 0P1 (613) 560-2600 www.equal-marriage.ca If would like to have your group reviewed in an up coming issue of GayCalgary.com Magazine or have comment or suggestions of groups to be reviewed, please contact us at (403) 543-6960 or E-mail us at group-reviews@ gaycalgary.com.

Death by Chocolate Heaven and back at the Palliser By Jason Clevett

Every Tuesday and Thursday, Executive Chef Yann Blanchard and his staff of seven prepare the enchanting Rimrock Room at the downtown Fairmont Palliser Hotel, as the chocoholics and sweet toothed come to sample the wide variety of chocolate on display.

review | Food

Death By Chocolate has been a tradition at the hotel for over fifteen years. Pastry chef Karine Moulen took us on a tour of the delights, pointing out some of the more popular selections and making suggestions. “It’s all made with high quality chocolate,” she explained. The staff makes sure that they can offer something for everyone. “We will prepare plates for Diabetics, or those with nut or dairy allergies. I will also go through the buffet with people and explain what they can and cannot have if they have allergies. That way everyone can enjoy it.” The first thing that catches one’s eye is the large chocolate fountain. Using fondue forks, you can dunk pieces of marshmallow, rice krispie squares, strawberries, melon and pineapple, and let the chocolate harden into a shell around it. It’s one of the highlights of the buffet, and certainly lighter than other dishes. The buffet features healthier fare like chocolate cereal bars, energy bars, and chocolate-covered dried fruit (dubbed “Tree Bark”), as well as an assortment of cakes: chocolate cheesecake, chocolate raspberry cake, assorted cookies, cream filled puff pastry and much more! It truly is a chocolate lover’s paradise. We both really enjoyed the chocolate mousse – three different kinds of chocolate layered in a champagne flute. Each bite offered a slightly different blend of flavor; beyond a doubt, one of my favorites!

events such as bridal showers and birthday parties. It is also very romantic – it may be cliché but there is something very appealing about feeding chocolate to the one you love.

At the same time as Death by Chocolate, the Palliser also offers a pasta bar or full dinner menu, should you choose to partake in them rather than gorging entirely on sweets. The Pasta and Chocolate can be combined together, or pick an entrée before indulging yourself.

Attending Death by Chocolate is something even legendary chocolate maker Willy Wonka would put his stamp of approval on. With Valentines Day coming up, why not surprise your sweetheart with a gift certificate, available at the front desk.. Just make sure you book early – reservations are required, and such a popular event can fill up quickly.

The ambiance of the Rimrock is a big part of the appeal of attending Death by Chocolate. Cozy chairs, high ceilings, dark wood and roaring fires make it a relaxed , intimate atmosphere. It’s a great idea for a gathering of friends, and according to Moulen, has become popular for

Canadian Forces

Perspective of a Gay Calgarian By Jason Clevett

Practically every day we see stories on the news about peacekeeping efforts in the Middle East. We Canadians tend to get overshadowed by our big brother down south, which makes it all the more interesting to find a particular gay Calgarian in the Canadian Forces. He asked us to refer to him as “Connal” for this article, for reasons of privacy. “I originally decided to join the army in the spring of 1996 when I had just turned 17. …I had some misgivings in the beginning about joining the Army, but since it runs on both sides of the family it was highly encouraged that I should join up. So in June of ‘96 I was sworn into 746 Communication Squadron here in the city.” Connal is now 25 years old and has been out since 2003, 7 years after he first signed up. We asked him if the army provided any type of social or support groups for homosexuals, however he hadn’t heard of any. “…my friends are my social support group,” he said. “At my unit I’m the only [gay person], and it does get lonely sometimes. As to other gay guys and girls I have met a couple but we normally tend to stick to our own group of friends and co-workers. Rivalries between each trade kinda help keep our kind separate.” However, his coming out was not as much of a bumpy a ride as one may think. “…the weirdest thing about it was that when I could finally come to terms with [being gay], I became a better person and a better soldier because of it. My unit accepted me and encouraged me to be proud of who I was. …if rumor can be believed, my name is known across Canada as ‘that gay guy from Calgary’, and that makes me feel sorta proud.” It’s surprising, considering the popular conception of gays and lesbians not being welcome in the military. But from Connal’s experience, that is not the case at all with the Canadian Forces. “I find that being gay in the army is normally accepted by the larger portion of straight men and women in the Canadian Forces. Since the Forces are nothing more then a microcosm of the general population as a whole, acceptance is the norm, but one does stumble across the [occasional] homophobic types.” “I know that the Yanks (Americans) have some deep

Community | Spotlight seated issues with allowing gays and lesbians into their Armed Forces but then again they have a lot of deep seated issues with homosexuals [in general]. With Europe I don’t know but sometimes I hear positive things, namely from the Dutch army, but I guess I’ll find out when I hit the Golan Heights and observe how the Austrians and Poles feel about queers.” Indeed Connal left for his assignment on January 31st, shortly after his interview with GayCalgary.com. “I am going on my first UN tour to the Golan Heights on the border of Israel and Syria. There I will be the second in command of a communication centre that sends and receives messages (radio traffic) to all members that are stationed within the area. I will also be bouncing my voice off satellites in an attempt to keep radio traffic open with NDHQ in Ottawa. On top of that duty I can also be tasked with being a part of the defense and security team, firefighter, or (the one I want) message delivery boy to Tel Aviv or Damascus.” He returns from his assignment this September, when we hope to ask him all about his experience overseas. In the meantime, all we can do is wish him luck and hope he does Canada proud! “Being a member of the Army has been the greatest thing in my life. It makes for a horrible pick up line at the bar, but the amount of fun that I’ve had has not been equaled. Its not for the faint of heart, and one had better have a thick skin, a willingness to prove how much better one is compared to the heteros, and realize how physically demanding the job can be.”

romeo and Hamlet

Hidden Insanity shakes up Shakespeare By Jason Clevett

The tragedies “Romeo and Juliet” and “Hamlet” are two of William Shakespeare’s best known and most read works. However, what would have happened if, instead of being torn between two sides in his love for Juliet, Romeo had instead gone to a party and fallen in love with the dashing Prince Hamlet? This concept is explored when Hidden Insanity debuts “Romeo & Hamlet” at the Pumphouse Theatre this February 16th to 26th. “The original idea came out of a meeting where we were trying to plan our season last summer. We had talked about in the past, doing something Shakespeare without doing an actual Shakespeare play,” director Jonathan Chapman told GayCalgary.com. “We were joking around with names and someone said “Romeo and Hamlet” and started shooting around ideas of what it would be like. We decided to go for it and write it, despite how crazy that was. Kevin Stefan and I sat down and started working on it, and early on we realized that what the issues were in Romeo and Juliet and in Hamlet had parallels to the current political situation – two lifestyles in conflict, and a conservative family. One of the Uncles says quite a few things that someone like Ralph Klein might say. What got us excited about this project is the political situation in Alberta. Things are really coming to a head, and it parallels with the play.” It has been a whirlwind since the two started writing last July. By September they had an audition script, and by October had the concept fully down on paper. According to Chapman one of the advantages of a homegrown production is the ability to tweak along the way. That said, there has certainly been insanity behind Hidden Insanity. “We don’t usually work with a cast this big. With nine actors playing eleven roles, scheduling has been a gong show, as well as trying to find things like a Viking helmets and other odd props and costumes. At the same time I think we have really been building excitement in the cast as everything comes together. Although it has been a lot of work it has been fun. We have a wide range of experience in our actors, for someone a little newer to theatre to be speaking what isn’t quite your own language can be a challenge. I am really pleased with how it’s going, but it

Preview | Theatre isn’t the easiest project we have ever done.” Chapman describes the tale as a condensed blend of both original works. ”The reason Juliet is at that party is she is engaged to be married to Hamlet (Luigi Riscaldino). Romeo (Lee Weselak) and his characters come from a more alternative lifestyle, so when Romeo falls in love with Hamlet it’s no big deal. He is just in love and that is what matters. Hamlet however is betrothed to this woman for political reasons. His Uncle has murdered his father and taken the throne, and is pressuring him to marry Juliet. As he strives to juggle the pressures of his new found love, his arch-conservative family, and his quest for revenge, he must also keep his secrets from the woman he is sworn to marry: Hell hath no fury like a Juliet scorned. It is a tough place because he has feelings he doesn’t know what to do with on one side, and his family, who is making him conform at least long enough to get his revenge. As the play goes on we waffle back and fourth between the two plays. We’ve condensed two three-hour plays into an hour and twenty minutes.” The show stays true to Shakespeare. Half of the script uses his original words, just spoken by a different character, while the rest is written in prose and iambic pentameter. There is poison and tragedy, and many of the bestknown scenes are included, such as the play in Hamlet, and the Balcony scene from Romeo & Juliet. “It is a scene that everyone knows, but it’s changed. Romeo says ‘What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east and Hamlet is the sun.’ and waxes eloquently

about his passion for Hamlet. We think its funny, because it’s Shakespeare, and so well known.” The pressure was on to put together a play that was fun, yet still respectful of Shakespeare’s original works. Chapman feels they have succeeded in this goal. “It is pressure for certain. However, I think…what was fun about this is that there are still mainstream releases of Shakespeare, these characters are very much alive in our culture. [We] use those things as a language to say something else. We love those plays but we can’t treat them too carefully. We had to rip stuff out, and move things around, and cut down long speeches. People who know those plays will see what we’ve done as clever. It celebrates how we all still love that, but also…someone who isn’t that familiar with the plays will enjoy it too.” Romeo & Hamlet February 16 – 26 at the Pumphouse Theatre 2140 Pumphouse Avenue SW Tickets: $12 regular admission $10 for students and seniors 2-for-1 on Tuesday February 22 Group discounts available Pumphouse Box Office – 263-0079
