Intoxicated Letter from the Publisher By Rob Diaz-Marino

I think it’s safe to say that we escaped Pride this year a little less wet than we did last year. Though it still rained on the Street Festival, all those people who attended the parade in rain coats and galoshes didn’t get the last laugh after all…at least until the torrential downpour in weeks to follow. Rob received praise for his flawless single-handed candy catching as a lesbian group playfully pelted him with chocolate-mints while marching by – “Wow, he catches like a lesbian!” one of them commented, much to Rob’s delight. After the festivities, we popped over to Twisted to see the hypnotist show, hosted by Trevor Knight. Our writer Jason decided to participate, alongside of several other bar patrons. We nearly pissed ourselves laughing as Jason was hypnotized to think his penis had run away. Jason is a pretty big guy, but he dashed after it with incredible speed down the staircase, where it crawled under the doors at the bottom. He sat there for several minutes, nearly in tears, not knowing what to do. Finally he returned upstairs where the hypnotist made him whole again. At the end of the show, the contestants were told that for the next 20 minutes they would have an orgasm every time the hypnotist’s name was mentioned. Yes, cruelly, we exploited that to its fullest! It’s tradition for Canadian youth to establish their alcohol limits by getting drunk to the point of vomiting – in many circles anyway. Usually this is done on the 18th birthday, but Rob somehow managed to miss that rite of passage back then. We finally made up for it as he turned 24 this year, on the 18th of June. Several of his friends – even a few straight ones – dropped by the Calgary Eagle to celebrate the occasion with us (and vote for their favorite leather daddy too). He had a blast, despite getting dropped onto the floor in an otherwise innocent attempt to lay him back on the pool table. It left a very colorful bruise, but thankfully he didn’t feel it at all the next morning. He got his birthday bump after all, and considering that Rob is a lush who normally takes just 2 beers to get tipsy, the extra beer and several shots of Jagermeister were enough to bring him to his limit. The words out of his mouth as he knelt, hugging the garbage can in the lobby of our building were “I’m never getting this drunk

again.” Awww, poor boy. Speaking of birthdays, Nina Tron celebrated her birthday on the 23rd, and from what we hear, her drinking experience ended off like Rob’s. Luckily no falling on the floor though, but I’m sure people held their breath every time she got too close to the edge of the stage. Tsk tsk, that must have been an impressive amount of booze to get a drag queen drunk! Hope you had a good one Nina! This issue we’re bringing in a legal advice column by our lawyer Darryl Aarbo of Courtney Sebree Aarbo. If you would like legal advice on a topic that would be of interest to others in the gay community, you can send your questions to legaladvice@gaycalgary.com. Your letter may get published in a future issue with a response from Darryl! Naturally all names will be removed to protect the innocent…or guilty. If you remember from last month’s issue, after writing an article on the Humane Society, we were compelled to adopt one of the kittens that we had photographed for the article. He is a mostly black kitten with a white moustache, underbelly, and paws. It’s hard to believe that it’s only been a month now, because he has fit so well into our little family. He is such a smart little guy, though we still haven’t been able to get him to stop suckling from our shirts. He’s still just a kitten though, so we’re letting it go for now in the hopes that he will grow out of it. Officially we don’t have a name for him yet, though we have been toying with the idea of calling him “Shamu” since his markings make him look so much like a killer whale. But he’s not fat by any stretch of the imagination, thus the dilemma…

Business Banter So did you see our bus ads? We sure did, several times, which was pretty exciting. We’re pleased that none of them were vandalized, nor did we receive a rush of prank phone calls – quite the opposite in fact. Perhaps there’s hope for Calgary yet. Our cover article this month is a business review on The Bay Downtown. Many born-and-raised Calgarians don’t realize there’s a lot of history here in our own backyard. The Bay building on 7th Ave and 1st Street has been around longer than Calgary itself! The fact that it’s still a bustling department store is amazing. Store manager Fred Amen took us on a tour into just a small fraction of the restricted areas in the building – some of which extend underneath the C-train tracks! The things we never

Highlights this Month Bar Banter Rumors have been ﬂying about the status of Detour over the past few months, and although we’ve been trying to keep close tabs on things, we’ve only just gotten the ofﬁcial word - and let me tell you, big changes are coming! Detour, Arena, and Victoria’s Restaurant have just exchanged hands to new owners, Terrence Skoreyko and Colin Maley. Their plan is to bring Detour and Arena to a new level by building on the business’ existing foundation, which means it will stay in the gay community while still keep its open-to-everyone philosophy. They have some big cosmetic and business changes coming, including extensive renovations. In the meantime however, the nightclub will continue to remain open and feature a number of new events, as well as the those events that Detour hasn’t seen in some time! As for Victoria’s Restaurant, a menu revamp and “fresh coat of paint” are due, to breathe a little life back into the establishment. Detour and Arena have undergone several name changes over their history, and they will soon see one more, however the new names are to remain secret until their re-launch this fall. Prank Calls We had a bit of a scare at the beginning of the month, with some con-artist out of Toronto who got a hold of our magazine. They proceeded to phone several of the businesses listed in our directory (some of them collect), impersonating our writer Jason Clevett, Benjamin Hawkcliff (ironically a pseudonym), publisher Steve Polyak, and even Rob Julien who wrote a letter to the publisher. The guy sounded nothing like any of these people, however the more establishments he called, the more reﬁned his stories and descriptions became. He told businesses that he was Jason/Benjamin/Steve/ Rob and that his car had broken down or that he had been mugged. He then begged for a wire-transfer of money. As these calls were occurring, we promptly met with the police to try and take action, however we were told there was nothing they could do unless someone was actually harmed. Naturally we were very unhappy hearing this, but thankfully the majority of businesses know us well enough that this caller’s antics instantly raised suspicions. Although we

Starting this month, The Backlot will be hosting ISCCA Barbecue nights every Friday, so come out and show your support! ARGRA weekend is coming up right away, July 1st – 3rd. If you’re wanting to attend but don’t want the hassle of driving there and back each day (especially if you’re going to get intoxicated!) then depending where you live in the city, there’s a much cheaper alternative to taking a cab. Once again, More Better Buses is going to be running a charter route between Twisted Element, Goliaths/Texas Lounge, and Symon’s Valley Ranch where the ARGRA festivities are taking place. After hearing horror stories from previous years of how a cab from downtown can cost up to $45, the prices they are charging for a trip on the bus is very reasonable. See the ad on page 23 for the bus schedule and more details. We were lucky enough to get invited to the Calgary Stampede media launch this year, and were amazed at the grand scale of the event! There were hundreds of people there from the media. We were seated at a table close to several anchors from A-channel, served a 4-course gourmet meal, and were even treated to live performances from The Road Hammers and Canadian Idol winner Kalan Porter! We received our own white cowboy hats as we were on the way out. The Stampede runs this month from July 8th through 17th.

SHE-Q Support by Women for Women

Since 1997, SHE-Q (Soulful Healing Ego Quest) has been a free group for women to meet and discuss their lives and their troubles in a safe, positive environment. Their mission statement is “To provide a space where we may ‘be’ ourselves in a supportive safe environment, to share about and validate experiences related to our sexuality.” We interviewed Krista Hummell, who started SHE-Q and presently co-facilitates it with Trudy Debecker. “It started as a result of me working the lines for the Gay and Lesbian Community Services Association and noticed an increasing need for somewhere for women to go. There seemed to be a lot of opportunities for men with issues with sexuality, but nothing for women. It seemed that Men, when they called the line, were interested in where they could go, and at that time there were a number of options for them. There seemed to be places men could go that women didn’t have. The community is primarily male oriented, and women were ﬁnding they didn’t know where to go. I proposed to the board that if they backed me with advertising and space, I would be willing to facilitate a group because I felt there was a need for it. They agreed

and so we got some advertising out and have been going ever since.” The group’s purpose has undergone an evolution since Hummell’s initial vision. “When we ﬁrst started out I think there was a sense that we would maybe not only be educational but also an opportunity for women to meet women and provide a dating opportunity. For the last four or ﬁve years it has been so much not that – it is a place where women are coming to meet other kindred spirits, not necessarily looking for a partner but common experiences, and how others have worked through them. There has been a real evolution away from looking for the ‘date’ and more looking for that kindred spirit. As well, it started as a coming-out group with people who were more concerned with issues about their identity, orientation, where to go and how to meet women. It has evolved to something more than that. It includes women wanting to have a place they can feel safe to share their experiences, whether they are in a marriage, with children, contemplating leaving a marriage, coming out – it has become a deeper, more sharing experience then the educational group we started out as.” Offering three ten-week sessions per year, the group meets every Thursday night during each session.

“We average eight women per group of women from their twenties to mid-ﬁfties. The groups tend to be in their forties but that doesn’t mean that we aren’t open to all ages. We discuss issues like boundaries, self-esteem, relationships and sexuality issues such as coming out. We aren’t so structured that if women have other needs they need to bring out we would shut that down. We are open to what the group needs, and providing a space for safe discussion.” The group expresses their goals through the many statements featured in their advertising material: “To help us accept the truth about ourselves no matter how beautiful it is;” “To support us in developing a positive sense of ourselves and our sexuality;” and “To help us develop trust, positive self image and esteem and healthy personal boundaries.” Hummell provided examples of three (of many) remarkable women whose lives have been affected by SHE-Q and these goals. “We had a schoolteacher join the group who taught at a primary school and wasn’t able to be out to anyone. She had just left a marriage and had custody of her children, but wasn’t sure what her orientation was and came to the group to talk about those things. She has actually conveyed to us that the group saved her life. She had fallen very ill and wasn’t able to teach, and once she got in the group and gained some strength to make her own discoveries and let her family know – she is not out at the school but she is in a place where she feels conﬁdent enough that it is no longer taking a toll on her health. She is back full time and loving life. Another woman was in a marriage of over 25 years and had two older children, but found herself feeling quite attracted to another woman and didn’t have the ability to make a move anywhere. While she was in the group she decided that life was too precious and she needed to be who she was, and made the decision to leave her husband and move in with this woman, and I would say they will be a couple that will be together forever.”

Krista and Trudy are more than willing to meet with women if they aren’t certain if the group is for them or not. “We have done that for many women in the past. …If women are questioning their sexuality and experiences regarding their sexuality then SHE-Q is for them. While the previous women had issues with their sexuality, Hummell’s third choice has an entirely different story. “We had a woman come to us who was sure of her sexuality, and had been all her life, but was struggling with issues of grief, having lost both her parents at a fairly young age. She had been working through some sexual abuse issues as well. She came to the group and found that she had many supporters in people who could identify with her issues and she was able to work with her struggles in that area. She has since said that she got exactly what she needed from the group, was able to address with the perpetrator what he had done and how it had made her feel. We have had people with eating disorders or alcoholism – women developing all sorts of ways of trying to mask what is going on with addiction is not uncommon.” The group continues to go strong and be an important resource for many women, regardless of where they are

THE BAY DOWNTOWN Shopping in History By Jason Clevett

While much of Calgary’s downtown core has become filled with high-rise office towers and condos, in the heart of it all is a 6-storey building that has been there for 92 years! Those six levels of the Bay Downtown contain their own stories that could fill a magazine unto itself – in fact, The Bay’s own “The Beaver” magazine, founded in the 1920’s, accomplished exactly that.

8th Avenue, and during business hours would come in and trade furs for things such as HBC blankets, goods and money,” Fred Amen, director of The Bay Downtown told GayCalgary.com. “We also used to deal in live animals; we had quite the pet department that carried everything from monkeys and snakes to small wild cats. Some of our more senior associates remember when they came into work one day that the monkeys had gotten out of their cage and were swinging from the lights and the signs on the ceiling. We had monkeys all over the store they had to round up and get back into cages.”

the past. “It is the oldest and biggest location in Calgary and one of six flagship stores across the country. Everything and anything you are going to experience in the Bay you can do so in this location. In 1913, the exterior of the store was all windows that provided most of the light for the sales floor. The few electrical lights that were in the building were powered by an in-store generator that was steam fired, and turned a turbine that generated the electricity. The generator is still here but I don’t think it is functioning. The elevators in this store used to be manually operated so we had operators that worked the crank and pulled the grate across. Those haven’t been in place for a number of years. We have some really detailed murals on the ceilings in some places from when people did a lot of artistic building. It has a lot of history and unique things about it. Last year we opened up the store for something called ‘Doors Open Calgary’ which was a historical tour of old buildings, which gave people insight into things you don’t normally see.” There have also been extensive renovations over the years, including the addition of 2 sections to comprise the building in its current form. “Some of the sales floors have been renovated and there is more still coming, and we hope to continue to doing that. The original building was only 1/3 of what you see now, an addition was made in the mid 1920’s and another in the early 50’s that completed the building into what you see today.”

Canadians are familiar with our National Gift Registry, and it is the norm for anyone getting married to register at The Bay. We have had a number of GLBT couples who have registered with both our store and across the country.” The Bay Downtown also offers a variety of exclusive products in men’s cosmetics, as outlined in GayCalgary.com’s June 2004 issue. “There are a number of cosmetic lines within the store and more and more of them are starting to have products specifically for the male market. One of the first people to really bridge that outside of skin care into actual makeup is the Jean Paul Gaultier line ’Tout Beau Tout Propre.’ They were the first company to do makeup for men such as bronzers, which gives you a healthy glow year–round, and lip gloss, nail care, and enhancement for eyes to bring them out. We also have a lot of unique and exclusive fragrances for men in our store as well.” As well, when shoppers go to the Bay they can earn points towards their future purchases. “The HBC rewards program in its original entity it was ’Club Z‘ which was one of the oldest loyalty programs in the company. We married that to be available at all of our

The building itself isn’t the only thing that has changed. Both the store location and the company itself have evolved over time – the company itself, over centuries. It is a remarkable achievement when one considers all of the department store companies that have folded over the years. “The Bay is Canada’s ﬁrst and oldest company, opening May 2, 1670 – [spanning] ﬁve different centuries and 335 years old. We continue to be around by adapting and changing to the needs and wants of the consumer. As styles, fashions and demands have changed, we have had to always make sure we were leading edge in what we offered. As the fur market declined, the company recognized it and adjusted accordingly. As customer service expectations changed, we had to adjust as well and make sure we are still offering the correct balance of service and affordability. The downtown store is one of the few locations where you can still buy toys. We have two different hair salons within the store and a concierge service, which is unique. The Bay downtown typically draws the business community that works in the downtown core as well as the community that lives here. A lot of that is proximity as well as the fact that we have the unique product offerings. With that in mind we also have personal shopping and have associates that will help clientele to do their shopping, knowing their needs and wants to help them. Most

stores – The Bay, Zellers, Home Outfitters and so on. It is one of the largest programs in Canada, every time you shop you collect points that can be redeemed for merchandise and service.” Amen also explained how The Bay also gives back to the community, both gay and straight. “This particular location has contributed to the GLBT community in many ways, and reaching out to that clientele as well. We have a number of charities that we are involved with, holding Galas every couple of months within the store and raise moneys through those and a number of different initiatives. On our 335th birthday we gave out cheques for monies we had collected to twenty different organizations throughout Calgary in addition to The Bay’s national charities.” The Bay Downtown was rewarded when they were recognized as a flagship store for The Hudson’s Bay Company. Amen saw this as another big step, and believes that they will continue to serve their clientele for a long time. “The biggest changes in this store came in September of 2003 when it was recognized as a flagship store. We are a store that differentiates itself with enhanced product assortment, customer service levels and a different experience when they are in this store. It truly is a full service experience. We keep getting bigger and better. Poor Ben needed a break from the porn scene this issue, so I’ve been recruited to take over temporarily. Reviewing adult flicks is certainly an interesting job…I never imagined myself watching this type of film whilst eating breakfast in the morning, though bananas are supposed to go well with cereal (wink). Adult Depot’s selection for porn this month consisted of “Ranch Hand Rehab” by All Worlds Video, “The Huge Cock Club” by Max Entertainment, and “New Orleans Cum” by Blue Alley Studios. In “Ranch Hand Rehab”, after his dad finds pot in his room, main character Robbie is sent off to his Uncles’ farm for the summer. If his dad’s aim was to “straighten him out” this was an extremely bad choice! Considering that this ranch is run by Robbie’s two uncles, he probably should have taken the hint from the complete lack of women, the fact that all the male ranch hands walk around with their shirts off not really seeming to do any work…or at the very least he could have taken a brief look around before abandoning his son – there were already two guys in the back making whoopie! But if it weren’t for these obvious set-ups, we’d never get caught in these awkward yet erotic situations, now would we? This film has something for everyone. Personally I enjoyed the two hairy muscle-men, but there was still a healthy dollop of thin young hairless guys (twinks if you will), and even a cute young chubby guy. The photos on the cover of “The Huge Cock Club” made my eyes bug out (all three of them), though as I watched the movie, I realized they must have used some perspective tricks for those cover shots. Don’t get me wrong – they’re still very big! My only complaint was that the well-endowed guys weren’t necessarily the most attractive. The saving grace is that the guys servicing them were typically a lot easier on the eyes. Lastly, the amateur film “New Orleans Cum” shows the goings-on in one young man’s bedroom - he goes out to the clubs and comes back with a different guy each time (sounds like a lot of people I know). This film is definitely geared toward those who like the younger club-going crowd. From Adult Source we have “ManPlay MP-011” by Titan Media, and “Furry Fuckers” by Factory Video Productions. (Ooops, Mr. Editor, can I even say the word “Fuckers” in

here? Cover your eyes kiddies!) “Furry Fuckers” really doesn’t waste any time with words or story – they go directly into the action. I had a chuckle at the “All models are over 18” disclaimer on the back cover, since they’re clearly all men – well-muscled, hairy, tattooed and pierced men. Though they’re not true bears, they’ll deﬁnitely appeal to bear-lovers. WOOF! Similarly, “ManPlay” shows a 2-hour orgy of 8 wellmuscled, well hung studs. Some of them are hairy, some not, but if you like Latino hunks, Mario and Rafael are to die for! There’s no story to this one either, unless you count the paragraph on the back of the DVD box. At the very least this means we’re spared some cheesy acting, and we can get right down to the good stuff – and boy is there a lot of good stuff! At the very worst it means that I don’t have a lot to describe without getting unnecessarily graphic. We do want you to actually go out and rent these, so I apologize that I can’t give a blow-by-blow description…pardon the pun! Well, horny gentlemen, there is your food-for-thought this month. In The Gothic Halls Of Power By Stephen Lock

I’ve been doing the activist thing for more years than I care to think; a lifetime for some. One would think by now I’d be blasé about the workings of power and politics, a tad jaundiced. Happily, it appears I am not. In April I had the privilege of presenting before a House of Commons’ Subcommittee dealing with solicitation and bawdyhouse laws. This is the Subcommittee Vancouver MP Libby Davies initiated in response to the serial killings of prostitutes in that city’s Downtown Eastside. There appeared to be some confusion around whether or not the Subcommittee was going to hear arguments regarding the use of the bawdyhouse laws and, if so, whether it would hear arguments from gay and lesbian groups. Some groups in Toronto especially, were very upset that they had not heard of, or been contacted about these hearings, and therefore were unlikely to be able to present before the Subcommittee. Ms. Davies insisted she had informed various GLBTQ community organizations, most notably Egale Canada, which in turn had Gilles Marchildon, Egale’s Executive Director, saying he did not recollect any such conversation until quite late in the process. The upshot of this kafufﬂe was that Egale and a few other GLBTQ groups were able to submit briefs arguing their respective points of view and to present before the Subcommittee, although the time frame was pretty tight. I was originally accepted to present before them during their hearings in Edmonton on March 31st, but as I had not received veriﬁcation until March 22nd, it did not

leave any time for my brief to go through the appropriate channels at Egale or to have Egale’s Legal Issues Committee review it and make recommendations. We decided at Board level that the Edmonton presentation would be postponed to the Ottawa hearings on April 18th. This would then give me, the Legal Issues Committee, and Egale’s Director of Advocacy Laurie Arron enough time to prepare an appropriate brief using some of my original document (actually quite a bit of my original document), to make the appropriate case law references, and to tweak the presentation to ensure it conformed with Egale policy and Egale’s position on the issue. Now, I grew up in Ottawa and ﬁnd the city to be one of the more attractive and interesting cities in Canada (heresy here in Alberta, I know. Sorry…). I have also been down to Ottawa several times on Egale business, so the city holds very little mystery for me. However, I have to say, every time I walk past the statue of Sir Galahad, through the wrought iron gates surrounding Parliament Hill and onto the Great Lawn, I am struck not only by the grandeur of our Houses of Parliament but by the realization I am not just a “Calgarian”, or an “Albertan” but – in the famous words of certain beer drinkers – “I am Canadian”. It makes my heart ﬂip and puts a catch in my throat. This time around was no different. As I walked towards the Hill with Gilles, Egale’s Executive Director, and Laurie, Egale’s Director of Advocacy, listening to them chat away about a variety of topics facing Egale and the queer community in Canada, their voices became more and more distant the closer we got to The Hill and the looming presence of the Peace Tower. I was nervous, and more than a little intimidated. To them, this process was an everyday occurrence. To me, it was momentous. As we walked up the promenade leading to the Centre Block I was again struck by the sheer architectural majesty of the buildings – soft grey stone, arching windows, the green patina of the copper roof, the gothic splendour of the Peace Tower itself, looming high into the blue sky like a cathedral spire. The gargoyles gaze down on me as they have gazed down on Prime Ministers, Heads of State, dignitaries and bureaucrats for 148 years. My hands started to sweat and my tweed jacket suddenly felt like 50 pounds. We followed Laurie around the corner of the Peace Tower to an unobtrusive wooden door set below the ground level, off to the side. Once through this door we were suddenly surrounded by the cool gothic quietness of Canada’s

Houses of Parliament. Marble pillars and arching ceilings stretched away into the dimness above us. Our footsteps echoed softly along the inlaid marble floors as we made our way to the security desk to be processed and passed along to the next level of security upstairs. As the elevator doors opened on to the second floor my eyes fell on the line of Prime Ministerial portraits stretching down the hallway. Kim Campbell’s is directly across from the elevator and is the first one anyone sees upon getting off. I am not sure if that was intentional or not. Who knows? This is Ottawa, after all… Passing through the second floor security, we entered a small gothic foyer. By now I had totally lost my bearings and had no idea where we were in relation to what one could see from outside. I assumed we were on perhaps the first level of the Centre Block and that the hallway we were in branched off the main Rotunda. I glanced around and everywhere I looked was High Victorian Gothic Revival design and suddenly I realized – here I was, Stephen Lock from little ol’ Calgary Alberta, about to enter into one of the salons set aside for important government business and hearings, surrounded by history: Our history, my history, the history of Canada. It was quite a moment. I needed to find a bathroom. Entering the salon I spotted several MPs sitting around a committee table, with various clerks quietly and efficiently rushing to and fro delivering papers, water, and speaking in hushed tones with the MPs. The creamy beige marble walls stretched up 15 or 20 feet, framed by gilded pilasters and topped with gilded crown moulding. Dominating the room was the famous portrait of the Founding Fathers at Charlottetown. We sat down to wait our turn. Everyone seemed to know what he or she was doing and taking this all as a matter of course. It reminded me of your typical board meeting and I started to feel on more familiar ground.

During our presentation, I spoke about the role bathhouses have played in North American urban gay culture since the 19th Century. I spoke to the impact the bawdyhouse laws have had on those charged, about how lives were tossed into turmoil ﬁlled with anxiety, panic attacks, depression, anger, hurt, hospitalization. I spoke of the discriminatory nature of such laws and how they are inordinately applied to our communities. The MPs asked questions, wanting to know our position on prostitution and solicitation. We answered Egale had no position on those issues, that we were there to speak speciﬁcally to the indecency sections of the Criminal Code, the criminalization of consensual sex between adults, and the inequity of the anal sex laws and how they are applied to gay and bisexual men, and other men who have sex with men. We stressed that, in the absence of demonstrable harm to individuals or society, the government had no business regulating the sex lives of its citizens, let alone criminalizing consensual sex occurring in private. The whole process took an hour. As I emerged from the coolness of the Rotunda into the unseasonable warmth of an Ottawa spring and down the steps leading from the Peace Tower, seeing the City of Ottawa stretching out before us on the other side of the Great Lawn, I was still wondering what a guy from Calgary Alberta was doing

We had an hour to present our oral briefs and be available for questions from the MPs present, which included Libby Davies, Art Hanger, and Hedy Fry. Real Menard’s chair was empty. I thought the Subcommittee Clerk was kinda cute – very Quebecois; very courteous.

there. I was amazed that I had reached a point where I was walking across Parliament Hill like I belonged there, with tourists sneaking peeks at us wondering who we were and if we were important people or not. And I realized yes, I belonged there. I am Canadian.

Gay Legalese HIV Travesty By Darryl Aarbo

Dear Sir, I know of a young bottom, in his mid 20’s, through my best friend who was his room-mate. The one thing that concerns me is that this young bottom is HIV+ and on a few occasions I have been aware he has openly lied about his status even when explicitly asked by his partners. In every case he has told them “No I am negative”. My concern is that knowing his status and the fact he is lying about it, does that make me an accomplice if he infects someone? I understand there must be a legal precedent or a health concern. I do not know where to turn without outing his status, and if I do, it would mean admitting that I know he has lied to some of these people. I am not sure how to react. I was hoping if you responded in writing to my letter I could leave it lying around and maybe he will get the hint.

You are wise to be concerned about this very serious matter, but you cannot be held criminally responsible as an accomplice based on the facts as you have described them in your letter. To be charged with that type of offence you need to actively assist or encourage the person to commit a criminal act. Further, if you receive, comfort or assist such a person for the purpose of avoiding criminal charges then you cannot also face criminal charges. In sum, you need to take some positive step to help someone engaged in criminal activity or ﬂee from police to be guilty of an offence yourself. Although you cannot be criminally charged with an offence, you still have a moral obligation to try to change this person’s behaviour. I would strongly encourage you to contact AIDS Calgary or a public health nurse with the Regional Health Authority at 944-7575 to ﬁnd out what you can do to help this person change his ways. It is important to point out that the individual who is lying about his status with his sexual partners can face very serious criminal penalties if he is engaging in unprotected sexual activity. If he is exposing individuals to HIV and deceiving them about it in the process, then he can be charged with aggravated assault or worse. These types

The Alberta Ballet Returning home for the 2005/2006 Season By Jason Clevett

September 2005 will be a homecoming of sorts for Alberta Ballet. After a year of performing in alternate venues, they will be returning home to the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary, and the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton. “Our coming season marks the beginning of a new era for Alberta Ballet. To celebrate our homecoming into our stunning new theatres, we will unleash our brilliant dancers into a year of ecstatic dance while creating new productions that attest to the prominence that Alberta Ballet is now enjoying on the international ballet scene,” said artistic director Jean Grand-Maître. “This season will be unlike anything we have ever seen. The company is increasing its roster of dancers to 26, making it the largest ensemble of professional dancers west of Toronto. It will be a year of jubilation, a year of energetic and festive dancing. Alberta Ballet is now absolutely poised to soar.” The season will start off with a special treat for Calgary arts lovers, as Alberta Ballet is teaming up with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Calgary Opera Chorus, as well as four guest soloists for the Grand and Glittering Homecoming Celebration in September. The rest of the season will feature the company’s interpretations of many classics. Alberta Ballet’s new season opens with The National Ballet of Canada returning with the iconic Swan Lake. Patrick Masse A New Voice in Country Music By Rob Diaz-Marino

Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, Shania Twain, Gretchen Wilson…at ﬁrst glance you wonder, could there be a genre of music more predominantly straight than that of Country? But then you get to thinking that really, the girls aren’t so girly, and the guys…well, could anything be more adorable than a bunch of tough, rugged, burly cowboys singing about love and their feelings? Maybe it’s not such a straight-oriented industry after all. The songs they sing don’t necessarily have to be directed to the opposite sex, do they? Well, that will certainly be the case for country singer Patrick Masse, who is performing live at the ARGRA Rodeo on July 1st. We met him as he was promoting his CDs at the ARGRA Dance last month – quite a dashing fellow. He describes his style as being Traditional Country, in contrast to the more pop-inﬂuenced country that has become predominant today. Patrick was exposed to Country music at a young age, and was lucky enough to discover at such an early juncture in his life that singing was his passion. Luckily his parents were able to recognize and nurture his talent, despite the chaotic demands of having a large family. He performed at several songwriter gatherings and live music venues in Vancouver, making many connections through the people that he met. To date he has created two CDs: “Get There From Here”, and his recently released album “We’re not Alone”. He sings from the heart, with lyrics that are very sentimental, tender, and romantic. Though there is a small helping of the dreaded “twang factor”, it really doesn’t take away from the song as a whole.

My favorite track out of both albums was “Easier Done than Said”. It was a little more upbeat than many of the songs, while still carrying a message of brimming affection for the little things that our lovers do. “So if I don’t say I love you 100 times a day, I hope that you don’t take my choice of words the wrong way, cuz I’m not big on talking ‘bout what I could do instead, oh loving you is easier done than said.” A statement on his website sums things up nicely: “With the good looks and charm of a country boy and the soulful voice of a crooner, Patrick Masse is winning over new fans with his traditional yet refreshing brand of country.” Sales of this CD beneﬁt Chicago’s Hearts Foundation, a not-for-proﬁt group supporting fundraising efforts for Chicago’s GLBT community and HIV/AIDS service organizations. The Calgary Stampede Lots to do down at the grounds By Jason Clevett

There’s a popular song by the band “Big & Rich” titled “Save a horse, ride a cowboy” and those who want to follow that credo will get their chance from July 8th – 17th as the Calgary Stampede once again takes the city back to the days of the wild west. Here’s what’s on tap for this years event. Music lovers are in for a treat, as the Coca-Cola stage continues its tradition of bringing an assortment of music styles to the masses. Popular bands like K-os, Terri Clark, The Jeff Healey Band, Thonley, David Usher and Canadian Idol winner Kalan Porter will be performing live, free with gate admission. Nashville North will bring out the two steppers with country acts like Emerson Drive, Jake Matthews, Lisa Hewitt, Doc Walker and the Nitty Gritty Dirt band. The Pengrowth Saddledome will also have a blockbuster lineup including Brad Paisley & Jamie O’Neal, George Canyon & Tim McGraw, Michael W. Smith, and lastly Willie Nelson hits the dome the day after the Stampede comes to an end. The big draw is the million-dollar rodeo event. GayCalgary.com was lucky enough to get a sneak peak, behind the scenes tour of this spring’s “Roughstock” event which introduced us to exactly what events like Saddle Bronc Riding, Bull Riding, Steer Wrestling and Barrel racing entail. It became evident that it truly is a difﬁcult skill to master – it’s certainly more than a cowboy hat and tight wranglers, but that’s a great reason to watch. If you

have never experienced a rodeo, the high energy, highly competitive event is one of the top rodeos on earth, bringing the very best talent to Cowtown. Every night will have the traditional Rangeland Derby Chuckwagon races, and they finish off with the Grandstand Show on the Transalta stage. “Alberta: A Centennial Story” celebrates the past and imagines the future of the province. Featuring a cast of over 500 including The Young Canadians of Calgary and the Stampede Showband and international performers like Cirque de Soleil, the high flying Imago, the Spirit Eagle Dance Troupe, The Wild Horse Singers, dancer Lisa Odjigy, Alex Wells and Dallas Arcand. Finally, the Transalta “Lights up the Night” world-class fireworks display will be bigger than ever this year! Other entertainment around the grounds will include hypnotist Terry Stokes, impersonator Shania Twin, ABBAmania, meet and greets with Dora the Explorer and Spongebob Squarepants for the kids, The Eukanuba Superdogs, assorted exhibits in the Round Up Centre, and the Bell RodeoX mountain bikers. A big part of the Calgary Stampede is giving back to the community, and with that in mind The Rotary Club of Calgary South, The Kinsmen Club of Calgary, The North Hill Lions Club and the Calgary Marching Showband Association use the opportunity to fundraise. On-park lotteries have been part of the Stampede for nearly fifty years, and nine different lotteries are operated as part of the Great Stampede Lottery. This year’s prize packages have

a combined value of 1.2 million dollars. Up for grabs are the 2,275 square foot two storey Rotary Dream Home from Homes by Avi that will be moved to Evergreen Estates after the lottery, as well as seven vehicles in the Kinsmen Wheels lottery, including the new Pontiac Solstice – the new “must have” sports car convertible. Want cash? The Lions Pot O’Gold will award $250,000 tax free to the winner. Look for Showband volunteers selling YAA HOO! tickets which can turn your $1 into $150. For many who head down to the Stampede Grounds it is to sample the once-a-year food that only The Stampede provides. Over 90 vendors on the midway and in the venues will ensure you get your fill. Wash down a foot long corn dog and with a root beer. Grab a BBQ beef on a bun. Head into the Big Four building for Sumo Express, The Holy Grill, and Knots and Suds. And who could forget the junk food for your sugar fix: Candy floss, fiddlesticks, carmel apples, dippin dots, cupcakes, and those oh so addictive mini-donuts. If you don’t head down to the grounds you can still get into the spirit by stopping by one of the many Stampede breakfasts around town. Don’t eat too much right off the bat however, because you adrenaline junkies will need to keep it all down while checking out the rides! In addition to regular favorites like the Zipper, the Tower of Doom and the rollercoaster, the 2005 Stampede features new rides Speed Flip, Century Wheel, Alpine Bobs, Power Surge, Haunted Mansion and Missing Link. Last year more than 1.2 million people walked through the gates of the Stampede. With that many, there is sure to be some major eye candy as well. No matter what your type of guy or gal, you’ll likely end up getting distracted by those walking by, perhaps even more than from the other sights, sounds and smells that fill the Stampede grounds for those ten days. The New Gallery Queers on the Move Review | Art

Art can be a painting, a sculpture, a carving, an etching, a poem, a piece of music, a movie, a play…a pink mini-cupcake? New Gallery welcomes Toni Latour and Rina Larsson to Calgary this Stampede to give a unique performance entitled “Queers on the Move: The Make Friends Project.” It consists of four performances humorously dealing with themes of representation, visibility, acknowledgement, and the making of queer history. Crowds outside the theatre venues at Vancouver’s Out on Screen Film Festival were delighted at Latour and Larsson’s efforts to make friends. Once the performance was done – yes – they gave out home-made mini-cupcakes covered in pink icing, each baring a flag with a reminder to “Make a Friend Today”. “As a multidisciplinary artist, I have worked for over seven years with video, sound, installation, performance, and photography. My work has often focused on my identification as an artist. Using humour as a strategy, it often makes reference to other artists and my position within contemporary art. Depicting the carnivalesque quality of the artist/performer, my work seeks to inform, entertain and engage audiences,” says Latour in her Artist Statement. “I first conceived of the Queers on the Move project as a response to an invitation by FUSE magazine to develop a series of public performances that would later be trans-

lated to the printed page. The piece grew into a life afﬁrming, and community building, project that has resulted in three different incantations (two in conjunction with Out on Screen 2003 and 2004, and one for the 2004 signal and noise festival at Video In).” The New Gallery will be featuring t-shirts, images, and text that outlines the Queers on the Move project. They hit off the exhibition on Thursday July 7th with a talk by Latour and Larsson themselves at 7pm. The next morning from 7-8am, right before the Stampede Parade, they will be giving a free performance and cupcake breakfast at The Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts (South Side of Building).
