Love is in the Air Letter from the Publisher By Rob Diaz-Marino

Steve and I celebrated our 4 year anniversary this month, having met each other in person for the first time in 2001. Funny enough, this exact same day is Steve’s birthday, and we often joke (not to sound conceited) that I was one heck of a present! Lucky for Steve, his birthday party was nowhere near as wild as mine – we opted to stay at home and take one quiet day away from it all. We don’t get holidays like normal people, so it was a huge rarity for us to be able to blow off the responsibilities of the magazine for a few hours. Needless to say, we enjoyed the break, though at the same time it felt a bit lonely not to be in the company of friends and family. Us aside, we had a large outburst of weddings to attend – oddly enough, not all gay. Naturally, we showed up to give our congratulations and take photographs at the wedding reception for Keith Purdy and Rick Kennedy. It was so good to see them finally tying the knot after all the struggle they’d gone through to get a marriage license even before the legalizing of Gay Marriage. I also had the pleasure of attending my ex-girlfriend’s wedding at the Calgary Zoo. I definitely went into that keeping a low profile, as it was admittedly an awkward situation. I had to break up with her as I was coming out of the closet, and naturally this caused some major emotional turmoil at the time – tragic since we’d been inseparable friends since the 4th grade, and had only of-

ficially dated for about a month. I was particularly scared to face her parents, but they and everyone else greeted me warmly and was thankful that I was there. The groom was a talented, albeit shy guy that she met at the animation college she’s been attending in Vancouver. I’m pretty certain we have a lot in common, but since I’m also a shy person, I didn’t get much of a chance to get to know him. During the garter toss I was regrettably bested by a stout rugby player whose reach extended past mine by a mere inch. Damn! The very next weekend, I attended the wedding of another female friend that I’ve known since Elementary school. During the reception, a big burly straight guy in a kilt pretended to hit on me, much to the delight of his girlfriend and the bride’s maid. He was thoroughly impressed at how I resisted flinching as he threw one leg around me and ground up against my hip. This quickly led to some ass-grabbing for the camera, to which I said, “Do it again? Sure!” I didn’t have the heart to tell him I’m a homo…besides; I was enjoying a little harmless fun. Then came the garter toss – a second chance! The throw was so terrible that it came nowhere near the congregation of bachelors; most of them stood there stupidly, having expected it to come right to them. I demonstrated amazing agility for my blood-alcohol level, lunging forward and snatching the garment right from underneath the hand of a speedy 12-year old. It would have been wasted on him anyway.. In the News It seems that Shaw has finally relaxed their disapproving stance toward OUTtv. Customers of Star Choice can now receive the channel in the More Movies 2 package, or as a stand-alone service for a very reasonable price. Shaw Cable customers can also add OUTtv to their

Multi-Pack Extra bundle for no additional charge. Visit www.starchoice.com or www.shaw.ca for further details on how to activate the channel if you do not already have it. Bar Banter Detour had a “ground breaking” party to signify the beginning of their much anticipated renovations. It’s not every day you see a drag performer pull out a sledge hammer and begin bashing in a wall! Renovations are being done during the week when Detour is closed anyway, so business will still be running as usual. The Rekroom is hosting ISCCA fund-raising drag shows every Saturday evening at 10pm. Be sure to head down and show your support! Although, this is not bar-related, it’ll certainly be something that the club-goers might find interesting. Saturday September 17th is the 9th Annual Earthdance – The Global Festival for Peace. It has grown into the world’s largest synchronized music and lifestyle event, now occurring in well over 150 cities in 50 countries. The event’s mission is to unite world communities in support of non-profit humanitarian and peace-related causes, and foster an environment of peace and harmony throughout the global sphere. CBCA Sexual and Reproductive Wellness Centre’s Anti-Homophobia Campaign will receive a large portion of the funds raised at Earthdance Calgary. The event will commence at 8:00PM and will run until 3:00AM; however, the location will not be announced until the day of the event. For more information, call (403) 670-5410 or visit www.earthdance.org. Non-Profit Events The 2nd annual Artists for the Quality of Life Cut-aThon will be occurring right away over the September long weekend. Aside for the main event on Sunday September 4th, there is also the Midnite Café Reunion the day before. For more details, read Linda Huston’s letter to the editor on page 39, check out their ad on page 11, or visit their website at www.artistsforqualityoflife.com.

The 11th annual Calgary AIDS Walk for Life is on Sunday September 25th. You can contribute by making a donation or volunteering your time at the event – visit www.calgaryaidswalk.com for more information. Also, another great way to give back to the community is to join a non-profit group, or at least give your input. The ARGRA AGM is coming up September 13th, and the AGM for AIDS Calgary is on the 14th. If you have the time to volunteer, this is a great opportunity to get involved. Hey all you burly and furry guys, don’t miss Bear Bash 2005 the evening of October 1st! See their ad on page 63 or visit www.rockymountainbears.com. THE SHARP FOUNDATION A Vision of Hope

By Jake Wallace

The SHARP (Society Housing AIDS Restricted Persons) Foundation was established in 1990, as a Calgary-based non-profit organization. They are committed to providing a continuum of care including: housing, healthcare, and support to those individuals infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Their hope is that by providing these services, it will prevent homelessness and the need for more acute health care facilities. GayCalgary.com contacted the SHARP Foundation and learned how this organization came to be. “From 1993 until 1998 The SHARP Foundation had been providing primarily palliative care, with the focus on controlling symptoms and maximizing the quality of life in a caring, non-judgemental environment. Since the mid-1990s significant breakthroughs in the management of the HIV disease occurred. Since that time the medical community has become much more effective in treating people with HIV infection. Today, with advancements in medications and treatments, people with HIV infections are living longer lives and are marginalized by society.”

“We currently operate two houses located in a Calgary residential neighbourhood. In 2004, Beswick House and Scott House care givers provided over 4000 days and 100,000 hours of care and support.” Nanica Brown told GayCalgary.com. “One of the most challenging questions we still hear is ‘are you housing, or are you healthcare?’ Our answer has changed over the years depending on the need. We have been neither and we have been both. Currently we need to be more than that because we are seeing overwhelming demand for services devoted to quality of life and the value of living. We need to provide more opportunities for self-actualization, dignity and hope for persons living with HIV and AIDS in our community.” The SHARP Foundation is doing just that, through a Case Management Program and a Resident Life Activities Program. Nanica Brown went on to explain the latter. “Once a month residents have the opportunity to take part in an activity that will be educational, focus on health and wellness or build social skills. The program is planned by the residents for the residents. Lisa has taken on the role of organizer of resident activities. She is the liaison between residents, staff and volunteers and with help from caregivers she researches the activities online a task that she had never performed before. Her new skill allows her to talk to her son daily through email and her

overall confidence has increased. Recently, Lisa moved from Beswick House into Scott House, our transitional living facility to further her dream of living independently.” Nanica continued, “Last summer we began encouraging residents to invite family and friends along to enjoy these experiences. More people got involved and together we planned an amazing trip to Zoolights where families were able to enjoy the festivities together. Sarah, one of our long term care residents at Beswick House, was enthusiastic about the change and expressed how the new activity program was allowing her to build connections with her family – especially her son – in the time she has left. Her dream is to leave a legacy of happiness for her family to remember.” As one can imagine there are a lot of personal stories that go along with any organization that deals with life change and hope. Gary Hart shared his personal story as a volunteer, caregiver, board member, and a friend to persons living with HIV/AIDS. “As a board member, I can tell you about the financial need; how much it costs to run and maintain Beswick House or Scott House, paying salaries and expenses, building and expanding programs, or establishing sustainable volunteer resources. But as a caregiver, I can tell you about the people - the individuals that I have had the opportunity and privilege to care for and how their lives and their life stories have taught me

and changed my perspective on life.” “I started volunteering as a caregiver in 1998. This was a time when AIDS-related deaths and end of life care were common, and long-term care was just beginning to surface as a trend. Kathleen was the first person to pass away after my orientation. She was a loving person, sought attention and acceptance, while being explicitly open and honest about her life experiences. Having a rather uncomplicated life, I would sit and listen in disbelief at the challenges and obstacles she had endured, and the vivid manner in which she would describe them.” Gary Hart went on to explain how Kathleen had taught him the value of being non-judgemental and taking the time to truly listen – after all, each person has their own unique perspective, and therefore a different a story to tell. Gary continued, “Andrew was also near-death at that time. He needed assistance to get out of a chair or to walk, had difficulty eating and was always restless. But, he wanted more. He wanted to live on his own, care for himself, return to creating artwork - his life passion, and explore his spirituality. Skills learned at Beswick House helped Andrew achieve that period of independence before he returned to pass away a couple of years later – at peace with the process of dying, having had the opportunity to create a summary of his life as his last art exhibit. He taught me the value of determination and having the com-

mitment and passion to follow your life dreams.” “I have learned many other life skills from my work as a volunteer at Beswick House, and from the many other lives and stories I have experienced. I often visit our memorial patchwork quilt and reflect on the diverse and vibrant lives, experiences and stories that have been a part of my work with The SHARP Foundation.” Supporting these programs means that more people like Lisa, Sarah, Kathleen, and Andrew will have access to housing and guidance to meet their needs. Nanica Brown went on to tell us how we as individuals can be a part and help this foundation, so they can continue to affect lives and offer hope. “The SHARP Foundation is currently undergoing change and growth to better meet the community we serve. We have an ongoing need for funds and goods to maintain our current programs and services but, we also require resources for new initiatives. We are also dependent on donations to maintain the two residences, [Beswick House and Scott House], that we currently operate. This includes repairing and maintaining appliances and the elevator, painting, new linoleum flooring and small construction projects. Other needs include: Tool Boxes - complete with tools necessary for general maintenance; New and used furniture in good condition, including night stands (bedside tables), bulletin boards, dining set (table and chairs), and love seats or sofas; Large commercial coffee maker; Landscaping supplies including plants and paving stones; Refrigerator; Window coverings; Washer; Bus passes; Bed frame – double/queen; Lift chairs; Office furniture – two drawer file cabinets; and Paper products and groceries.” Another way you can show your support is by attending Sing-a-Long Wizard of Oz. This gala event benefiting the Sharp Foundation is a first in Western Canada. “Sing-A-Long Wizard of Oz is a splashy night of theatre mixed with a festive costume-filled celebration, all in conjunction with a large-screen viewing of the classic film that continues to touch the hearts of millions. It’s the excitement of the movies as a theatre going experience, with an audience that’s thrilled to get involved and participate with their favorite characters, such as Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. So focus your brain, listen to your heart and summon up your courage, Sing-A-Long Wizard of Oz is about to transport you to a new, colorful world of unimaginable fun!” Join and support the SHARP Foundation as it continues to affects lives of individuals with HIV/AIDS as they offer support, life change, and hope. Just Ask Nina! The Dish who dishes advice By Nina Tron Dear Nina, Lately, I have noticed a good friend of mine has become quite withdrawn and rather distant. He never seems very happy and no matter how I try I can’t seem to reach him. He would rather mope around than go out and do things. And the more you ask what is going on the more distant he becomes. So lately, our conversations don’t have much interest or topic. I am very concerned about him and only want what is best for him. How would you deal with this situation? Concerned Friend

Dear Concerned Friend, Well it sounds to me like it could be one of two things, either your friend has decided you aren’t worth the effort

or he is suffering from a major case of depression. If it is a case of him being too tired of you then give the damn boy some space!!! The more you ask the question the more he is going to see you as a major pain in his ass, and not the kind of pain which one would associate with pleasure. If it is that he is suffering from depression then that is something he and his doctor will have to work out. If he hasn’t seen a doctor, find some article to discuss with him about the subject. The old adage, “plant a seed and watch it grow” comes to mind. But, ultimately the decision to seek help will be his. You seem to care enough about this person to take the time to write me so give him space but, keep a watchful eye on him and keep the lines of communication open. He may come around but, you will have to be patient. Sounds to me like you think he is worth it so, keep the faith my little darling!! Nina I am here for you, and I look forward to hearing from you all, I can be reached at: AskNina@gaycalgary.com or Mailed to Ask Nina c/o GayCalgary.com Magazine, Suite 403, 215 14th Avenue SW, Calgary, Alberta T2R 0M2. You can also watch Nina every Sunday night and events through out the week at Twisted Element, 1006 11th Avenue SW. Other than the question, all personal information (i.e. name, address, E-mail) will remain confidential. GayCalgary.com does reserve the right to alter questions for brevity and content. From Canada’s Most Produced Playwright. A musical/murder-mystery/comedy written with Leslie Arden. An off-the-wall spoof about a New York restaurateur on the run from the mob. He finds himself at a run-down hotel in Saskatchewan, where everyone who checks in could be the hitman who’s out to get him. Pajama Tops By Mawby Green & Ed Feilbert September 7 - November 13, 2005 An utterly mad spoof of the French bedroom farce. The plot is all fun. A husband plans a business trip with a “ friend “ for philandering purpose. His wife secretly invites this same voluptuous girl to spend the weekend. The husband is trapped! Out of the blue an old friend appears, and a policeman with a roving eye for beautiful women keeps you wondering what could possibly happen next. There is also a devilish-looking butler, a maid practicing to be a coquette, and some wildly artful dodging, all calculated to keep the audience laughing. Adult Film Reviews Back to School! By Jerome Voltero

Review | Adult Male

Well it’s September, and by some warped sense of logic, this month’s porn review has a “back to school” theme. By “school” we obviously mean University, College, or any other educational institution where people over the age of 18 dwell. If you were hoping for otherwise then firstly I say, “ewww,” and secondly, sorry to disappoint you. Even these college boys are a little too young and twinkish for my liking, but I’ll do my best to feign interest. Our line up from Adult Depot includes “College Cumfest” by Blöc Hardcore, and “Pledging Frat Boyz” by SanDiegoBoy Productions. “College Cumfest” is a foreign film where all the boys speak some Germanic or Slavic language as best I can tell. Luckily there are English subtitles, because the opening scene has some of the most compelling dialogue that I’ve seen in porno in a long time - or maybe not understanding the language renders me unable to judge how contrived their acting is. Nevertheless, the production value of the film is excellent, having vivid video, speech that’s not muffled or drowned out, and reasonably uncheesy music. The guys are pretty beautiful, even I have to admit; clean shaven, healthy builds, clear complexions and tidy haircuts. I definitely get the impression that they were chosen based on appearance, not just solely on cock size. Unless they’re taking Fellatio 101, they should learn to better utilize their study time! As for “Pledging Frat Boys,” two guys get right into some shower action. Unfortunately, they engage in some light dialogue beforehand, with inappropriate grinning and staring at the camera as if seeking approval from the director. Amateur porn, you gotta love it! The plot centers around two frat boys having a mostly non-verbal discussion about how they’re going to pledge new members into their house. Next comes the recruiting, where they run around campus to invite as many people as they can to their initiation party. I’ll give you a hint – you might want to flyer the two guys wearing pink golf-shirts and chattering like high school girls! Then finally comes the party itself – introduced with the grammatically stimulating line: “We’re about to initiate y’all into the delta-nu fraternity. There’s a lot of things we gotta do, and a lotta things we gotta be done to.” I think I just saw the editor’s nose

twitch. Anyway, the guys in this one are certainly not too bright, but body-wise they’re chicken with light builds and zero body hair. I’d guess that a lot of guys would be drooling over them, but they’re too low in fiber for my taste. From Adult Source we have “Frat House” and “Get It On – Part 2” by Bacchus Releasing. There’s not any rhyme, reason, or storyline to “Frat House” – it’s just a bunch of random sexual encounters between a bunch of guys living together in a frat house. One thing that humored me was the lazy jazz and easylistening music playing in the background. Pretty good tunes for a drive to the mountains if your parents don’t mind the occasional slurp, smack, and “Oh gawd yeah!” That aside, the guys are more mature than in the previous two films. Some are well muscled, others have a light sprinkling of chest hair but, they all have in common their nicely proportioned goods. My favorite guy was Rick Brock, who oddly reminded me of a sexy version of Robert DeNiro. Though his member starts off small, it soon becomes quite a mouthful for his eager frat companion. Yummy! “Get It On – Part 2” doesn’t really fit into our backto-school theme, but upon viewing the film, I quickly

forgot why this even mattered; finally something to get my blood pumping. It starts with two hunky body-builders, a Latino and a black guy, working out beside their backyard pool. Wordlessly start slathering each other with oil, shining up their muscles and messing around. They spray each other down with the garden hose and move into the indoor hot tub, where things get a lot more serious. The second scene was nothing special, but at least it’s over with pretty quick. Ryan Block in the third scene definitely took the cake – by far the hottest of all the guys in the porno if you ask me. He starts with some idle locker-room chit chat, going on to do a set of sit-ups and push-ups wearing nothing but a jock-strap! His buddy starts helping him with stretches, and one thing leads to another. It makes for a very hot scene…but on a side note, did anyone notice the big black butt-plug in the corner? No locker room is complete without one! So, while your professors go through all the boring administration stuff in your first lectures, they’ll probably wonder why you have such a big grin on your face. Be careful though, they can see what you’re playing with under the desk! “College Cumfest” and “Pledging Frat Boyz” Available at Adult Depot 524 6th Ave SE – (403) 264-7399 140 – 58th Ave SW – (403) 258-2777 www.adultdepotstore.com afterdk@telus.net “Frat House” and “Get It On – Part 2” Available at Adult Source 10210 Macleod Trail SE – (403) 217-7848 1536 16th Ave NW – (403) 289-4203 2770 32nd Ave NE – (403) 250-8225 1127 17th Ave SW – (403) 244-6537 4310 17th Ave SE – (403) 273-2701

Q Scopes “Be honest, Leo!” Lifestyle | Astrology

By GayCalgary.com Magazine Staff

Saturn is in Leo quincunx to Uranus in Pisces until Oct. 7. Expect twitches in religious institutions pointing to big changes in a few years. Clashes between tender egos and spiritual insights will hit home. Mercury is in Virgo aspecting those slower planets, triggering arguments that can sharpen insight into these issues.

ARIES (March 20 - April 19): Take some friends to church - or synagogue, or mosque, or whatever religious institution you grew up with. The point is not to convert them, but to get insights into your own background and baggage. What you least like hearing will prove most helpful.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20): Arguing with the boss can be chalked up to fragile egos. Yours is the only one you can keep in check. What would your parents say? And how would you like to respond? Get that out of the way before handling the boss.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): Arguments are almost inevitable now. Almost. Worries about money (or self-worth?) are the underlying triggers. Make sure you’re able to have someone - preferably an older sibling or a “sister” - with whom you can discuss those issues.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22): Sexual issues are up for you. Remember you have nothing to prove, and buying new toys or fetish-wear won’t help. If getting old is part of the problem, then being mature and taking charge is the answer.

LEO (July 23 - August 22): We all have inner doubts and fears, and nobody’s perfect. What you really hate is that imperfection is true of you, too. Be honest and open with your partner or a trusted friend. Not admitting your flaws will magnify them and make you intolerable.

ries, but also may confirm some of them. As bad as things may be, your worries just magnify the problems. You need a reality check.

LIBRA (September 23 - October 22): Being too creative at work can come across as flaky or threatening to your superiors. Keep communications open, and welcome constructive criticism from colleagues. Any entertainments or morale-boosters you devise now should be kept simple.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): Challenged by new ideas? Retreating into traditional beliefs will not help. That’s what “fundamentalism” is! Better to accept the challenge. Arguing with a teacher can help both of you to learn, but stay respectful.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 20): Pushing beyond your familiar sexual limits is OK, but be very careful! Confused signals can get you into dangerous situations. In any new kinky activities, make sure to be clear about safewords, proper instructions, etc.

CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Working on new erotic techniques could open questions about personal morality and responsibility. Your partner could goad you or be a drag; there will be some discomfort either way. Communication, though an effort, remains the answer always.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): Sweetly listen to anything your partner (or a close friend) has to say about cleaning up your act. You don’t have to agree or follow the advice, but at least consider it. It could catalyze a better approach.

PISCES (February 19 - March 19): Showing off in sports or at the gym is sure to get you hurt. Maintain a moderate level of activity. If you need to show off, focus on your artistic insights and your ability to express things beyond most people’s imaginings.

MARRIED & QUEER: What’s Next? By Stephen Lock

A day after this publication went off to the printers last month, the historic decision by the House of Commons to pass Bill C-38, The Civil Marriage Act, took place by a vote of 158 to 133. Despite equal marriage now being law in Canada, the “war” is far from over for the GLBTQ communities in this country. We have only won a battle. After all the acrimony, all the debate and the warnings of impending doom, all the committee meetings, media coverage, arguments in coffee shops and around dinner tables across Canada, Parliament chose to acknowledge a simple fact: human beings meet, fall in love, and want to form committed relationships and that it is inherently unfair and unconstitutional to have one group benefit from legal definitions and protections of that relationship while another group is excluded. It is indeed a historic decision -- in some ways perhaps ‘the’ most historic decision made in Canada in our 138 years as a nation (not 148 years as I wrote in a previous column… ‘rithmetic weren’t never my strong point…). Same-sex marriage has, for better or worse, taken up the lion’s share of the work various activists have engaged in over the last two to three years. It is now time to turn our attention toward other inequalities and needs within our community. In recent years, the trans-identified community has become increasingly vocal and organized, although it remains fractured. Apart from the Northwest Territories, no jurisdiction in Canada protects on the basis of gender identity or expression. The Canadian Human Rights Act, a cornerstone of Canadian human rights law, fails to recognize gender identity and expression as a right. Health care coverage of genital reassignment surgery (GRS, also known as SRS, or sex reassignment surgery) is still largely unavailable except, interestingly enough, in good ol’ “redneck” Alberta. Since terminology is important, it is likewise important to understand what is meant by ‘gender identity’ and ‘gender expression’. Admittedly, it is a complex and widely misunderstood area, even within the GLBTTTQ communities. Gender identity refers to the inner sense each of us have

28

gaycalgary.com magazine

around whether we are male or female. This appears to be inherent and sometimes has little to do with the genitalia a particular body might possess. I “know” I am male, not because I have a penis and testicles – if those had been lost in some horrible accident as a toddler or baby, I believe I’d still “know” I was a male. In short, I am male not because I have a cock and balls but, rather, I have a cock and balls because I am male. That is my gender identity. Gender expression is the socio-cultural manifestation of one’s gender identity. It is the external expression of maleness or femaleness. A transsexual woman (male-tofemale or MtF) starts cultivating a feminine persona to match her emerging femaleness (as opposed to ‘emerging femininity’…femaleness and femininity, while often linked, are two distinct issues). As she begins her transition, she lives her life as a woman and appears to the world as a woman. A similar process occurs for those who are FtM, only in reverse. While most people understand ‘gender identity’, most have some difficulty with ‘gender expression’ when it doesn’t match what they perceive. An example is the guy you’ve shared an office with for years who ‘suddenly’ starts ‘wanting to wear drag’ to work. The individual is, of course, not in drag or doing it because of a transvestite fetishism. The person is transsexual and in the process of transitioning. Transsexuals are required, prior to their surgeries, to live their lives as the gender they are about to become so that the social and community transition is as smooth as possible. It really makes little sense to suddenly go from being Sam, have the surgeries, and the next day be expected to successfully live one’s life as Sandra…one needs time to adjust and ‘grow into’ the new being - to say nothing of those involved in one’s life. Protections around gender expression would help ensure that ‘Sandra’ can’t be fired for expressing who she is or be forced to continue presenting as ‘Sam’. If gender identity was protected and gender expression was not, then we could easily fall into a rather odd situation whereby ‘Sandra’ had protection around her gender status (transsexual) but could not live her life as a woman because gender expression is not protected; the two go hand-in-hand. Another emerging area of consideration is sexual freedoms. These were a basic tenet of the early Gay Liberation movement that, as homosexuals and bisexuals, we fought for our right to be who we were and to express

that. We fought against the criminalization of homosexual acts and, in Canada at least, won. However, vestiges of the old regime still exist. Various ‘sex laws’ are still on the books that target homosexuals, and more specifically gay and bisexual men, and other men who have sex with men. This is a familiar issue in Calgary, as the community here experienced the first raid against a gay bathhouse in over twenty-three years when Goliath’s Sauna-tel was raided in December 2002. Criminal charges of ‘indecency’ were laid along with charges of operating a ‘common bawdyhouse’ and charges against 13 patrons for being ‘found-ins’. The Crown eventually stayed those charges against the owner, management and staff in February 2005 and the charges against the one individual who continued to fight his charges a couple of months later. But there are other Criminal Code statutes seen by many as discriminatory. For instance, the age of consent laws, while an emotional and ethical minefield, discriminate against gay male youth. The legal age of consent in Canada is 14 years of age for all acts except anal intercourse, which is 18 years of age. Tiffany and her boyfriend can fuck like bunnies from age 14 on, assuming the boyfriend is not significantly older than she and in a position of authority over her. Jason and his boyfriend can’t…they have to be 18. While there are valid, or at least understandable, arguments for and against raising the age of consent – and the Board of Egale had some very emotional discussions on that very issue – whatever the age of consent ends up being in Canada, it needs to be the same for both heterosexual and homosexual people. To effectively enshrine different ages of consent because of moral concerns around anal sex is discriminatory and, while it is often couched in terms of health and sexual safety, counterproductive. If it is illegal for youth of a particular age to have anal sex (whether its two gay teens or two heterosexual teens) and following from that it is therefore illegal to ‘counsel’ them to engage in it, then we get into a situation where youth, especially gay youth, are denied crucial information upon which to base informed consent. If we can’t talk about anal sex with a queer youth, he is not going to know anything about it except what he might happen to glean from porn media, and he’s not going to know how to protect himself or his partners. Sexually active queer youth are going to fuck. We know that. Just as sexually active straight youth are going to. Yet some would criminalize one while educating the other. That many of those involved with law-making cringe at the whole idea of buggery/sodomy/ass-fucking, and are squeamish talking about it, does not deny the reality that for many gay men fucking ass is as an important part of their sexual expression as vaginal intercourse is to heterosexuals.

Then there are three-ways: Who hasn’t had a couple of those at one time? They can be fun, sexy, hot, and affirming. They can also land you in jail and slap a criminal record on you. While ‘only’ a summary offence, the fact a couple decides to invite a third (or fourth, or fifth) person to have sex with them should be of no concern to anyone but those involved. The State needs to stay out of the bedroom, or dungeon, backroom, or the bushes at 2am when nobody but those interested in sex are around. Many of the sex laws currently on the books are based on moral concerns and frequently date from the Edwardian era. In most areas of Canadian jurisprudence, the system has moved from a morals-based analysis to a harm-based analysis. Does a certain act create demonstrable harm, either to another individual or to ‘society’? The legal system needs to be consistent and, as many rights organizations argue, move to the harm/lack of harm model. Of course, conservatives will, and have, decried such a move as ‘moral relativism’ and evidence of the insinuation of ‘secular humanism’ into civic life: The Godless society is upon us and we will pay the price of an angry God. I think God is a bit more intelligent than that, and likely has a broader grasp of rights, human dignity, and free will. God would certainly have a better idea than your average evangelical fundamentalist throwing conniption fits about the moral decay of Canadian society while trying to impose his or her brand of religion and morality on the rest of us. We live in a democracy, not a theocracy. If what I do brings no harm to others, then room needs to be made for that. Will those we stood beside in the fight for equal marriage now stand beside us in our fight for trans-identified rights and sexual freedom?

Stephen Lock is the Regional Director for Egale Canada and the Calgary Representative for The Canadians For Equal Marriage Coalition. He is also the producer and host of a semi-monthly glbt radio show, Speak Sebastian, airing at 9pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month on CJSW FM 90.9. Gay Legalese Common Law By Darryl Aarbo

Dear Legal Advice, I’ve been running into some health problems (nothing serious, but certainly nothing I feel inclined to share with the people at work), and have needed to take a number of sick days. A co-worker of mine, who has been vying for my job for quite some time, has been feeding my boss lies that I’m missing work because I have a cocaine habit that is getting out of control. I am totally outraged that he would make up such a lie about me as I am firmly against the use of drugs. All I’ve told my boss that I’m having some “minor health issues”, but he’s convinced that I’m lying now because I refuse to go into further detail. I’m scared this will turn into a choice between my job and my right to privacy. Can I retaliate by pressing charges against my co-worker for defamation of character? Would this help my chances of not getting fired over this incident if I win? My boss hasn’t explicitly told me who gave him this information, but I’m pretty certain it’s my co-worker. How difficult is it for me to prove my case if it goes to court? Cheers, - Framed Freddie

Dear Freddie, You have a right to privacy. Neither your employer nor your co-workers are entitled to know the details of your health problems. However, your employer is entitled to a note from your doctor for any absence because of a medical reason. It doesn’t need to contain the details; they are only entitled to know that you were off for a medical reason and when you are coming back if you will be off for awhile. As long as you give them this information then your employer cannot fire you, except in limited circumstances. Further, if you get fired because of idle gossip then you would have a good case against your employer for wrongful dismissal. However, you probably want to keep your job and avoid the expense of a lawsuit at the same time. To avoid this you may want to politely suggest to your employer to contact the Alberta Human Rights Commission to find out exactly what they are entitled to know about an employee’s medical leave. They have a lot of information on this particular issue and it is free.

I should also point out that, even if the rumours were true, cocaine addiction is considered to be a medical disability by the Alberta Human Rights Commission. Your employer cannot fire you because of an addiction or even a perceived addiction. It is illegal. Thus, in either case, your employer cannot fire you. They cannot fire you for not disclosing the details of your illness and they cannot fire you even if you have a cocaine addiction. In both cases you could go to the Alberta Human Rights Commission and file a complaint (and maybe a lawsuit in the Courts). Regarding your co-worker, defamation is a very complex lawsuit. I would need more information to give you a proper analysis but it sounds like you may have a pretty good claim. If someone is telling your boss lies at work and you get fired, then you may have something to go on. The problem with defamation is that it is hard to prove and very expensive. Your better bet is to get a lawyer to write a letter accusing the co-worker of defamation and requesting an immediate retraction. If you are not sure who it is then, to avoid the embarrassment of sending it to the wrong person, you may simply want to talk to your employer about an internal harassment complaint. Most employers these days have internal policies prohibiting any form of harassment between employees. This may keep him in line. If not, I would repeat my earlier advice and suggest that your employer contact the Human Rights Commission at 297-6571. Darryl A. Aarbo

If you wish to send in a letter, please email it to legaladvice @gaycalgary.com. Darryl A. A Fabulous Disaster A tragic comedy of dire warnings and light-hearted musings. By Jake Wallace

“And so it begins, the hilarious and quixotic adventure of one little soul, lost in the burning forests of British Columbia. Divorced, alone and missing her book collection, she turns her obsession of winning back her lover into a defiant stand against the flames. Futilely armoured, equipped with a blistered heart and noble intention, ‘The Fire Animal’ sheds her broken skin and valiantly dances with the flames.” One Yellow Rabbit and Ground Zero Theatre present, the Calgary premiere of Denise Clarke’s latest fiery creation, A Fabulous Disaster. She not only created this work, but also stars in it.

Review | Theatre

Clarke began working with One Yellow Rabbit in 1983. She later became an Associate Artist and a permanent member of the One Yellow Rabbit Ensemble in 1986. She has created or co-created several shows for One Yellow Rabbit including: The Erotic Irony of Old Glory, Touch, CD Dance, Breeder, So Low, Permission, Featherland, Sign Language and Heavens to Murgatroid. She later created and became the director of the One Yellow Rabbit Summer Lab Intensive School in 1997. This very busy and talented woman’s work also includes choreography and direction for Theatre Calgary and Alberta Theatre Projects in Calgary, Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre, Crows Theatre, and the Canadian Stage Company in Toronto. GayCalgary.com contacted Diava Jocius of One Yellow Rabbit to find out more about this fabulous premiere that will be hitting the stage here in Calgary. “A Fabulous Disaster is Denise Clarke’s newest signature dance/drama about one seemingly hopeless person’s bravery in the face of obvious disaster around her and the quiet one in her heart. Strange and beautiful, the show toils with love, jealously, loneliness, acceptance, and brilliant stupidity. Clarke brings sharp observation and glorious physical response together in an original piece drawing on all things opposite.” The show premieres in Calgary at the Big Secret Theatre in EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts, and runs from September 13th - October 1st, 2005. The production has already been seen across the country. “A Fabulous Disaster had its world premiere at the Firehall Arts Centre (Vancouver) in November last year when it was co-presented with Ruby Slippers Theatre. It also ran this past May as part of the prestigious Harbourfront Centre’s World Stage: Flying Solo Festival in Toronto.” A Fabulous Disaster has been getting rave reviews from

Montreal Outgames Entering Gay-Friendly Canada is a Simple Affair! By Sean Morrow

Sixty thousand people are expected for the opening ceremonies of the Montréal Outgames in July 2006. Among them, 16,000 participants will be competing or taking part in the various activities planned for the games. These Outgames, of Olympic proportions, will set new standards for international LGBT sporting competitions and raise expectations for their organizers thereafter. Canadians and visitors alike will participate in the making of history and do so in a city, province and country unparalleled in its ability to welcome visitors Sixty thousand people are expected for the opening ceremonies of the Montréal Outgames in July 2006. Among them, 16,000 participants will be competing or taking part in the various activities planned for the games. These Outgames, of Olympic proportions, will set new standards for international LGBT sporting competitions and raise expectations for their organizers thereafter. Canadians and visitors alike will participate in the making of history and do so in a city, province and country unparalleled in its ability to welcome visitors. Canada is a premier gay-friendly destination. LGBT visitors coming to Montréal in 2006 for the Outgames will find in this part of North America a irresistible haven of openness and tolerance that is reflected in extensive protection and rights guaranteed by Canadian laws and the nation’s Constitution. Back in 1977, the province of Québec pioneered as one of the world’s first jurisdictions to include sexual orientation as a prohibited ground for discrimination in its charter of rights and freedoms. Today, not only has that right been extended to all of Canada through the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but gays and lesbians in Canada cannot be discriminated against in the workplace, in social and human services, in housing and most other areas of day-to-day life. The trademark openness of Canadians towards differences has made homophobia a socially unacceptable behaviour and a quickly dying phenomenon. This openness was clearly on stage a few weeks ago in the Canadian Parliament as legislators voted 158 to 133 in favour of legalizing same-sex marriage, thus making

Travel

Canada the fourth country, after Belgium and the Netherlands, and almost simultaneously with Spain, to extend such rights. Interestingly, the debate has not focused on whether Canada should or should not allow same-sex unions – this, because since 2003, Canadian courts have been progressively ruling that marriages between samesex couples are legal. Opponents to the law were mostly focused on challenging the use of the word ‘marriage’ to define spousal unions amongst gays and lesbians. Even this watered down position could not garner the votes needed to defeat the march for equality of gays and lesbians everywhere in Canada. The new law was quickly adopted in the days that followed its adoption in Parliament. If you are planning to attend the Outgames in Montréal, you can come with your partner and marry anywhere in Canada. “What an event that would be,” said Louise Duguay, Co-President of Montréal 2006. “This laws enactment and the hosting of the Montréal Outgames make Canada the gay and lesbian travel destination of choice in 2006.” Visitors to Montréal and elsewhere in the province of Québec should note, however, that currently there is a civil code requirement for couples to publicly announce their intention to marry. At the moment, the law requires Québec marriages to be announced three weeks prior to the actual marriage date. Elsewhere in Canada, this requirement is not needed. Montréal 2006 will be providing a wedding chapel at its main gathering place during the Outages. For those who wish to tie the knot, it only requires that you make plans to be here three weeks prior or during the games to make your dream come true!

Rounding out LGBT rights in Québec, it is worth noting that gays and lesbians in the province also have the right to adopt and to parent the child of their same-sex partner. In fact, since 2001, the provincial legislature – the Québec National Assembly – unanimously adopted legislation creating civil unions for same-sex couples and providing adoption rights. As is the case in most countries, visitors to Canada are generally subject to various procedures and formalities prior to or upon entering the country. As you will see these procedures are, in general, simple but they do allow customs authorities to weed out illegal entries and criminals. Keep in mind that sexual orientation is not a basis in any way for refusing entry into Canada. Government agencies and non-profit groups work diligently to ensure that we are a safe, yet respectful country to visit, as well as accessible for tourists from beyond our borders. When choosing Montréal as your travel destination for 2006, remember that the city will be the gay destination of choice next year and that the Outgames will be the event not to miss. Here are some of the basics you should know about entering Canada: No Medical Exam Required The first thing to note is that if you are coming to Canada as a tourist, you generally do not need a medical exam. This is normally contingent on the fact that the visitor intends to stay in Canada for less than six months and that he or she originates from a country for which a Temporary Resident Visa – TRV (ie. a visitor’s visa) is not required. In these cases, you will normally only be required to provide proof of identity and citizenship (ie. a valid passport). Proof of Identity Documents If you are not a United States resident or citizen, you will be required to hold a valid passport from the country of your residence to establish your identity. Make sure that you don’t store it in your luggage but, rather, carry it on you when you are crossing borders; you will need to show it to customs officials upon entering Canada. On the other hand, applicants who need a TRV (ie. visitor’s visa) will be required to submit sufficient documentation that will allow Canadian authorities to establish their ties to their home country and thus to ensure that their stay in Canada in temporary. Additional visa information is available at the following Canadian government website: www.cic.gc.ca Visiting from the United States? No Visa Needed Due to international agreements between Canada and the U.S., persons that are citizens of the United States or those that have lawfully been admitted to the United States for permanent residence do not need a visa to enter Canada. Foreign residents in the U.S. must be in possession of a valid alien registration card, otherwise known as a Green Card.

What about Health Issues? Officially, Canada does not recognize HIV as a ‘casually communicable, infectious disease.’ Furthermore, it is Canadian government policy that people living with HIV/AIDS do not actually represent any kind of danger to public health or safety just by virtue of their HIV status. It is for this reason that officials will not categorically deny visitors entry solely based on their HIV positive status. The Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network notes that the departmental instructions given to visa officers state that ‘it would be rare that a visa applicant living with HIV/ AIDS might need to be referred for an immigration medical examination and rarer still that the person would be assessed as medically inadmissible. For rare and exceptional cases where a tourist’s health condition is such that they are likely to require health and social services while in Canada, there may be medical testing required. This, however, is a standard applied to all short-term visitors and understands that, to obtain entry approval, they will not impose undue demand on Canada’s public health care system. What If I’m Entering Canada from the United States? If you are considering a visit to Canada and plan on coming here through the United States, or if you plan on also visiting the United States during your trip, you might find this to be something of a challenge. There are a few things to know, post 9-11. Verifying the process on the official U.S. government website (www.unitedstatesvisas.g ov) yields interesting results. The US government considers travellers connecting through the US to be first traveling to the United States. The US government has imposed a number of measures designed to protect and ensure the safety of U.S. citizens and, consequently, are taking steps to identify potential security threats, even for tourists simply in transit. On May 14, 2002, President George Bush signed the national Border Security and Visa Entry Reform and the changes to entry policy began. The new United States Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative has begun to be enforced as well, further seeking to ‘Secure Borders and Open Doors.’ In an effort to guarantee safety, the government of the United States has begun to verify the identity of all applicants and visitors, as well as ensure that you intend to re-enter your home country. Consequently, travellers are likely to find the entry policies and procedures complicated, as they require quite a bit of effort to accommodate. The initiative is far-reaching and affects all travellers to and from the Americas, the Caribbean and Bermuda, who soon will be required to have a passport and/or a visa that establishes the bearer’s identity and nationality when entering the United States. If you’re a citizen of a foreign country, in most cases you’ll need to hold a Non-

immigrant Visa (visa) to enter the United States. You should know that the visa itself does not permit entry into the U.S. But, rather, it simply indicates that you have filed an application, that an officer at an American embassy or consulate has reviewed it and that you have been declared eligible to enter the country for a specific purpose. Essentially, you are allowed to travel to the United States but only as far as your entry point. There you ask the immigration officer for permission to enter and it is only the border officer who has the authority to allow you to continue on further. He or she will then decide how long you can stay for any particular visit. If traveling via the U.S., if at any point in the process you do not honestly answer the questions pertaining to any medications you are taking or any illness you have, and you are discovered, your file will be marked, you will be permanently denied entry and you will be sent back to your country of origin.

government websites, several American and US specialized travel agents confirmed this information but refused to be quoted on it. Coming to Gay-Friendly Montréal: Its as Easy as 12-3 In coming to Montréal in 2006, you know that you will come to compete and to celebrate in one of the greatest LGBT events ever. Unfortunately, in being honest, you may not be allowed to enter the United States, so bear that in mind. Letters to the Publisher Dear GayCalgary, As we embark on the Artists for the quality of life 2nd annual Donnie Peters memorial Cut-a-thon, I’m reminded how it all began! Kevin Midbo, the then director of AIDS Calgary, had one day reminded me of how Donnie Peters had created the Cut-a-Thon, a totally community volunteered high-impact fundraiser that gave directly to making a difference in quality of life for those living with HIV/AIDS. Well, one would think recreating such a legendary event would be a daunting task…but NO!!! Calgary’s top hair salons and stylists jumped on board in a heartbeat! The Uptown 17th BRZ was the first to become a proud sponsor. Then Roxy Richocet came on board, who has created incredible shows at Metro for two years in a row, with all proceeds going directly to the cuta-thon. Not to be outdone, my good friend and mentor (or is that mentress) Debi Leong recreates her Midnite Café reunion starting Saturday September 3rd @ 4pm in the Rek Room. It starts with a pool tournament, followed by Carla Foster and Karaoke, and finally up into Metro for the big show of shows which she is infamous for! Once again, all proceeds go directly to the Cut-a-thon. On Sunday, Lorrie Murphy and all our friends at Money Pennies invite you to cure that hangover with some great food. At the Texas Lounge, Mikey Woodward supplies you with excellent karaoke fun – yet again, all proceeds go to the Cut-a-thon! Now take a breath! Labour day Monday, the CUT-AThon at last!! So you know you have the best cutters in the city - probably the country - but what do you do for entertainment? Well, when you have event organizers like Eric “Mystare” Jackson and Grant Lockie, then you’ve got the park Rockin’! So, please join us and celebrate a legacy that we can be proud of. We welcome you to visit our Gay Calgary magazine sponsored web site www.artistsforqualityoflife.com As Donnie would say, “Go in love!” Linda Huston Eckess

Music Review Party Groove: Soakin Wet Volume 2 Review | Music

By Rob Diaz-Marino

The last time I was in Priape, I was eyeing the poster for this new Centaur Music release and wondering if I’d receive a copy to review. Sure enough, several days later the album arrived in the mail! For five consecutive years, Don Turner’s Soakin Wet party has been hailed one of New York City’s best outdoor summer parties, attracting sold-out crowds, top notch DJs and chart topping entertainment. David Knapp has returned to create this second volume, after making such a huge splash in 2004 with volume 1. Knap has captured the spirit, energy and vibe of the Soakin Wet party in his new CD, Party Groove: Soakin Wet Volume 2. The CD starts off with several energetic tracks. In particular, the bass vocals in “Most Precious Love” have a slight goofiness that’s bound to make you smile when you first hear them. Soon afterward comes Chris Cox’s mix of the revamped “Le Freak” by Chic – it blew me away hearing this classic totally reborn. Beyond that, Knapp starts to incorporate some of his tribal favorites including the red hot “Tabasco” and “The

Latin Express.” If you’ve read my music reviews before, you’ll know that Tribal is more likely to give me a headache than a joy rush. I was relieved to see that he soon returned to melodic tracks with vocals, granted that they are a lot darker and more serious. With a strong final kick to the album, Knapp takes off with Victor Calderone’s mix of “Low Frequencies” and then segues into his own exclusive mix of the Funky Green Dog classic “Reach For Me”. “Accept Me” and “Shout” go neck and neck in the final stretch before Knapp pulls us back into a big hug with his new mix of “Could It Be Magic.” Centaur Music www.centaurmusic.com PartyGroove: Soakin Wet Volume 2 is available in Priape stores across Canada, and online at www.centaurmusic.com, where visitors can listen to samples of every track on the album.

BearBash 2005 A Bearriffic Good Time By Jason Clevett

Calgary’s cuddliest and furriest bears will invade the Montgomery Community Center for their annual “BearBash” celebration this October 1st. Formerly, known as Bearback Calgary, this year’s event celebrates the recent change of name. “We recently changed our name to better distinguish our club by having a name that reflects the uniqueness of the area in which we live,” former president and current events coordinator Curtis told GayCalgary.com. “This year’s theme for Bearbash is our new name, Rocky Mountain Bears. In other words, it is a ‘Mountain Bear’ theme similar to previous years’ ‘Bears in the Woods’ theme, or ‘Lumberjack Bear’ theme. This year’s theme was chosen mostly, to get our new name out in the community.” The event is a celebration of Calgary’s Bear community. “Bearbash is our annual dance and bear competition. We encourage people from all facets of the community to attend. This year our dance is starting at 9 pm with the bear competition starting around 10:45 pm. This will be followed by food, because bears love food, and more dancing afterward. The bear competition consists of competitors showing how they look in different outfits, performing a task or two, and telling the audience a bit about themselves. Creativity is definitely one of the keys to doing well in the competition. Also, we found that it works well to have the audience decide on who they would like Mr. Bear Calgary to be, by voting.” BearBash is the main event of a year filled with a number of social activities such as camp-outs, trips to waterslide parks, and day trips to Banff. Curtis explained how the club works and told us about some of the social activities that will take place.

Community | Spotlight range from movie nights, to BBQs, to Banff trips, to an annual campout. Our monthly events are a bear bar night at the Eagle on the last Saturday of every month, and coffee night the first Monday of every month (except during the winter months) at Good Earth Cafe -1502 11 St. SW. Some of the events that we have planned over the next few months are bowling in November, our annual Christmas party and gift exchange in December (which is always very well attended), and a trip to Banff at the end of January.” This group is always on the lookout for new members and encourages those who may be interested to check Rocky Mountain Bears out. “The best way to get involved with the club is to contact us or, even better, come out to an event. You can contact us at events@rockymountainbears.com. Our Annual General Meeting is held in April so, if anyone is interested in running for one of our 7 executive positions they are welcome to run. The only qualification is that you need to be a member of the club. We are always looking for new ideas for the club and for people to come up with suggestions for new events. Our club currently has about 50 members. It is a very down to earth group in which many people have made very good friends and have had a lot of good times over the years. Come and check us out at this year’s Bearbash or another event.” Rocky Mountain Bears presents: ”BearBash 2005” Saturday October 1, 2005 Montgomery Community Centre Tickets $13 at the door, $11 in advance at The Eagle www.rockymountainbears.com

“Rocky Mountain Bears is Calgary’s bear club. It is a social organization that is primarily geared toward gay men in the Calgary area. Our club, like many other bear clubs, was created to give the ‘average’ guy in the community a place to go for a variety of social events in an atmosphere that is relaxed and casual. All adult males are welcome; members range from 18 – 60 with the majority of the members in our group between 30 and 50. The traditional definition of bears is males who are hairy and somewhat stocky. Our club has guys of all shapes and sizes. Most have some facial hair. We have events that

Queer Quest By Kevin Alderson, Ph.D., C. Psych.

I am pleased to introduce a regular column I will be writing for Gay Calgary Magazine, which I have entitled Queer Quest – a column that will focus on the questions, issues, and concerns that affect sexual minorities and others who are defined as queer. As some of you know, the word queer was once used – and sometimes still is – as a derogatory term against gay men particularly. But recently the term has been reclaimed by many sexualminority individuals to reflect a positive connotation to the entire group of people who either do not define their sexuality or to those who use a label (i.e., gay, lesbian, bisexual, bi-curious, transgendered, transsexual, or questioning). Consequently, queer is the most inclusive term we have for sexual minorities, those who are questioning their sexuality, and those who either avoid or negate labelling it. I am a professor at the University of Calgary, who specializes in gay and lesbian studies, and I am also a licensed psychologist who does some private practice work. Besides writing journal articles, I have also had three books published that speak to some of our issues: Same-sex marriage: The personal and the political (2004), Breaking out: The complete guide to building and enhancing a positive gay identity for men and women (2002), and Beyond coming out: Experiences of positive gay identity (2000). In this column, I intend to provide you the latest and most informative executive summary of what we know in psychology about the topic covered. So as not to bore you with details, I will simply get to the point and provide a form of referencing that does not distract the reader who simply wants the information. Whenever I state my opinion, I will make it clear that that is what you are reading. Here are a few ideas for upcoming topics: Friendships How important are gay friendships? How do you make friends when you’re gay? Why do so many straight women love gay men?

Coming Out What does it mean to “come out” today? What does it mean to be gay? What defines us? What awaits us after we come out? What are the gay roles or scripts that one needs to learn after coming out? Gay Youth Is the media helping gay youth come out, or is it a hindrance? What effect does the media have on how we construct a gay identity? When, and how, should you disclose your identity to family? How can gay youth overcome isolation? Fetish Culture Are fetishes healthy? What is leather sex, and what defines a leather man? What is it like to be a drag queen? What motivates people to cross dress? Sex Related What is cruising, and what are effective ways to do it? Are gay men really hung up on penis size? Are bathhouses dirty? What kind of people frequent a bathhouse? Are there benefits and drawbacks to having casual sex? What do we know about people who charge for sex? Is pornography/erotica good for us, or damaging? Why are so many older gay men attracted to very young gay men? Is there a link between body image and sexual orienta-

tion? What are effective ways to make out with a man, or a woman? Barebacking – why do some individuals put themselves at risk for HIV infection? Internet Topics Do people who meet over the Internet have as good a chance at establishing sustainable relationships as compared to those who meet through traditional approaches? When using the Internet, what should you embrace and what should you avoid? Besides these topics, a few others include HIV/AIDS, Homophobia, Gay Etiquette, Queer Mental Health, Queer History, Queer Relationships, Muscle Talk, Party Talk, Bisexuality, Questioning One’s Sexuality, Sexual Orientation, Transsexual and Transgender Topics, Intersexed Topics, Gay Stereotypes, Special Challenges of Queer Individuals, Cross-Cultural Homosexuality, and Spirituality and Religion. I encourage you to submit questions that you would like answered in a future column. I can be reached by confidential email at alderson@ucalgary.ca.

KaaDiki By Alikhan Velji

Review | Fashion

Modest, kind-hearted and extremely talented are the words that come to mind when talking about Haithem Elkadiki, fashion designer extraordinaire. Haithem moved to Toronto 14 years ago from Libya, and made Calgary his home since 1998. He seriously started to pursue his fashion career in 2001. Haithem had an interest in drawing/sketching when he was younger, and after seeing fashion drawings in a magazine, he immediately knew this was the career for him. Boy was he right!

Before starting his own label, KaaDiki, he gained experience apprenticing at Body Body Wear and other Toronto based fashion houses. He showed me his Winter 2005 collection and my jaw dropped! It was a marvellous compilation of cropped jackets, military style vests with buttons and pockets, stylish dress shirts with bold logos, and streamlined flat-front pants. His use of colour in the collection was phenomenal, with punches of reds, pinks and oranges…perfectly suited for the “stylish” gay man! I don’t know who wouldn’t look gorgeous in his threads. It’s all about attention to detail, precise tailoring, and versatility. His next collection will be showing in Toronto at this years’ Loreal Fashion Week ,October 17th to 22nd. All he would tell me is that it’s influenced by Pierre Trudeau. I can only imagine… fitted suits mixed in with Kaadikis’ famous touch of red…I guess we will all have to wait and see. This is his fifth season being involved with Loreal Fashion Week and he feels both “privileged and anxious, as it takes a lot to prepare for the show.” To top it off, he has also been nominated by Style Magazines’ Fashion

a loud, colourful shirt with a simple pair of pants, or vice versa. “Black and white, yin and yang,” as he described it. Unfortunately his pieces are not available in any stores in Calgary but, he does do custom work. It is just a matter of time before his brand explodes onto the fashion scene, so I suggest you get the pieces now. A KaaDiki original is the perfect addition to any gay man’s wardrobe! Export Awards as Menswear Designer. Haithem’s icons include “Gianni Versace, Christian Lacroix for his use of color, and Karl Lagerfeld for his personality” (who doesn’t love the man with the fan!). He incorporates all aspects of his life into his fashions, be it music, movies, travel, and even food! That’s why I believe his pieces spoke to me on so many levels: I know I would look damn sexy in them! He describes his personal style as being simple, having balance in his wardrobe; pairing

Skew Galleries By Alikhan Velji

Review | Art

Skew Galleries opened their doors in 2004. Their premise is to focus on emerging Canadian “painters, photographers, installation artists, and sculptors that demonstrate an innovative approach to art making, concepts, and aesthetics.” They are gearing towards more contemporary works, which are well suited in the surroundings: a white environment filled with natural light, allowing for the artworks to be showcased. The business is owned and directed by Emily Barnett and Bart Habermiller, who have over 20 years experience in the arts and business industry. Bart, being an artist himself, has his Master’s degree in Sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago, and has been heavily involved in

the art scene in Calgary. Emily, who is more businessoriented, has experience working at several art galleries and consulting for private collections. The two have also opened up the Summit Gallery of Fine Art, situated in Banff, in a building constructed in the 1920’s known as the Cascade Dance Hall. It is a gorgeous venue that has an “inviting, sophisticated, and inspirational” feel. With their new and innovative approach to the art scene, they have come up with an exciting venture: An art weekend in the mountains. It will start off in Calgary at the Skew Galleries with brunch and small talk by a showcasing artist. Then the tour heads off to Banff, at the Summit Gallery of Fine Art, for an informative session on collecting art pieces. It ends with you spending the night at the fabulous Juniper Hotel, which opened its doors a few months ago. Weekends like these will be planned

once a month, so contact the gallery for more information. What an amazing way to spend the weekend! Why not go with friends or that special someone, to experience something cultural and broaden your horizons! The Skew gallery will be hosting an exhibition from September 8th to October 18th entitled Water Lilies, by Ric Kokotovich, an artist and filmmaker . His works have been showcased at the Glenbow in Calgary, Galerii Pallas in Prague, MOMA in New York, and many other venues around the globe. This exhibition features large-scale photographs that “explore the balance between representation and imagination,” using a complicated double exposure technique with a Polaroid camera. Juxtaposing nature with the human form gives these pieces movement and fluidity. Definitely something to check out! The Summit Gallery is also having a showing by the same artist; this one is called the Past Lives Series. This is a photographic series of images of withering flowers and leaves. His goal was to present these photographs as “profound reminders of life’s ephemeral and transient nature.” This is a stunning collection of photographs that captures the delicate and fragile qualities of nature.
