Sex show reactions Letter from the Publisher By Steven Polyak
In November, GayCalgary.com was at the “Everything to do About Sex Show” to showcase the debut of this magazine. This was the first time GayCalgary.com hosted a booth at a mostly straight event, so it was an interesting twist being on the other side of the table. During the four days the show ran, we played several drag shows were recorded over the last five weeks at Detour and gave out copies of the magazine and post cards. With mostly straight people in attendance, it was interesting to see how people reacted. Many people would stop and watch the video clips that were playing. They would be surprised on how attractive the performers were, but were shocked to know that these guys were some of the best looking girls they’d ever seen. Women at the show seemed a lot more willing to pick up the magazine than the guys. That all changed when Selma Body came out for a couple hours to help. Guys were checking her out and were willing to pick up the magazine from her. Interesting. Many lesbians and some gay men did visit the booth and were happy to see that something new was out. I only had a couple really bad negative comments. A particularly judgemental person said I was going to hell. But then I wondered, why is he at a sex show then in the first place? The other one was a 20 year-old that I offered the magazine to. When he saw the cover of the magazine, he yelled out so everyone heard, “Gay? I am not gay! I like women!” I took the magazine back and he continued walking. The women in the booth beside me just burst out laughing. He seemed to protest too much. After the show, I asked myself, should there be a larger gay presence the next time? I think that there should be. I know I will be there. I hope we can create a mega booth, containing information for all the non-profit groups plus get the bars and gay businesses to help out too. Comments? Suggestions? We have a year to plan something. Lets try to bring the community together and use this venue to educate and show what we have to offer.

Just Ask Nina!
The Dish who dishes advise By Nina Tron Dear Nina, I’m a 24 year-old gay male who lives with a 26 yearold-lesbian, whom we’ll call Miss Titty. Our living arrangement was working very well until recently. Now she insists on walking around the house without her shirt on (did I mention she doesn’t wear a bra either?). She is a very strong and independent person and quite hard to talk to. I tried once, but it ended up being a debate over women’s rights to bare breasts. Can you imagine if my parents just happen to be in the neighbourhood and decided to drop by? Nina what would you suggest? Please help, Nipples to the wind Dear Nipples, While this queen is all for a woman’s right to bare her breasts, she is also all about respecting your roommates, and Miss Titty obviously doesn’t have any for you my dear (unless of course you yourself are walking around topless as well). But seeing how this is your only complaint, and you are willing to continue living with Miss Titty, may I suggest one of the following options. First you could always go the route of leaving her shirts absolutely everywhere, I mean in the fridge, on the couch, in the sink… I could go on but I think you get the point. Or, you could always go the most direct route and sit Miss Titty down (with a top on I hope) and give her the hard facts that either the boobs get put away or she’ll find you’ve gone away permanently!! In my experience the only way roommate situations work are with open and honest communication. Anything less is a ticking time bomb. P.S. Miss Titty You should know that most queer boys want to see a pair of breasts like most lesbians want to see a penis. Other than the question, all personal information (i.e. name, address, E-mail) will remain confidential. GayCalgary.com does reserve the right to alter questions for brevity and content. The Relevancy of The Goliath’s Defence Defending the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people By Stephen Lock
On December 12, 2002 over thirty police officers (including female officers), along with representatives from a variety of government agencies, raided Goliath’s Sauna-tel, a gay steambath in Calgary. Thirteen men were charged as being “found in a common bawdy house without lawful excuse” and the owner, manager, and (originally) three staff members were charged as being “keepers of a common bawdy house.” Of the original thirteen men charged as “found-ins” (a summary conviction, meaning upon being found guilty they would pay up to $2,000 in fines and have a criminal record), twelve opted for Alternative Measures, thereby effectively removing them from the criminal justice system. Being a ‘keeper’ is an indictable offence, punishable by up to two years in prison. The remaining man charged as a ‘found-in,’ Terry Haldane, refused to go away quietly. He has launched a Charter challenge, which will seek to have the definition of a common bawdy house as “any place resorted to for acts of indecency” repealed. The attendant definition (“any place resorted to for the purpose of prostitution”) is not at issue here and is not being challenged in this case. Those charged as “keepers” are arguing their case on the application of the law, not the law itself. When there were a series of raids against gay steambaths in Toronto, Montreal, and Edmonton in the period 1979-1981, there was a huge reaction from the gay community across Canada. In fact, those raids are credited with having launched the Canadian gay rights movement. When the raid against Goliath’s occurred 21 years later, there was hardly a ripple in the local community after the initial shock and surprise. The Goliath’s raid was the first raid against a gay steambath since 1981. I, along with Keith Purdy (then Co-Chair of Pride Calgary) spearheaded a response to the raid and called for the Calgary Police Service to account for the raid. The Public Relations Unit of the CPS trotted out a variety of excuses and some spin, but no accounting or apology was forthcoming. The raid on Goliath’s was equated with raids on massage parlours and escort services and the sweeps

through various “hooker strolls.” The Chief of Police, Jack Beaton, refused to meet with us. On November 17, 2003 – almost a year to the day after the raid – Haldane and the men charged as “keepers” appeared in court to start the trial. Haldane’s lawyers successfully petitioned to have his trial severed from that of the “keepers” since he was challenging the law itself, not just its application in this case. He was to appear December 1, 2003 to have a trial date set. Two days were spent on dealing with procedural issues until the Crown revealed new information had been brought to his attention two workdays before the beginning of the trial by CPS. What that information might be, nobody seemed to know. Whether or not it is relevant to this case, nobody seemed to know. The detective who possessed the information was unavailable as she was out of the country on a course and nobody knew where her notebooks containing the information were. After some discussion in the court, the case against the men charged

Even within the gay men’s community, there has been debate around the Goliath’s Raid. Some of us see this as an invasion of gay space and argue that, in the absence of demonstrable harm, the State (i.e. the government and the police) have no business interfering in how consenting adults choose to express their sexuality. Others argue that establishments like steambaths, backrooms, and sex clubs are an embarrassment to the community and maintain the police “did us all a favour” by raiding such dens of iniquity. Interestingly, the only Calgary community organization to come forward to contribute to the Goliath’s Defence Fund (set up in January 2003 to help defray the legal
costs of those men, now one man, charged as “foundins”) was a predominately heterosexual BDSM/fetish organization known as The Western Leather Federation. The members of the WLF obviously understood the implications such a raid on gay male space had for them. While individuals both in Calgary and across Canada have contributed to the Defence Fund, and establishments like The Calgary Eagle have likewise been supportive by offering space for meetings and their address for a mail drop, and a significant contribution was made by Cruiseline, a contact phone line for gay men and men who have sex with men owned by the same company that produces the Xtra chain of newspapers for the gay and lesbian community across Canada, the silence from other organizations and businesses in town has been deafening. There has been a gay bathhouse on that site since the late 1970’s, with Goliath’s buying the previous establishment, renovating it extensively, and opening in the mid 1980’s. The City of Calgary, The Calgary Health Department, The CPS, and other agencies were fully aware of the establishment and what it was – and never expressed any concern for over 15 years. Steambaths are an integral part of the gay men’s community. They provide a safe, often discreet, and sociable environment for a variety of men (openly gay, closeted, bisexual, etc.) to have sexual – and social – contact with each other. Far from being a “hotbed of infection” as one rightwing, albeit homosexual, apologist described them to be steambaths are recognized, in Canada at least, to be excellent conduits for the dissemination of Safer Sex information. While perhaps not every gay men’s cup-of-tea, gay steambaths are inarguably a part of our culture and have been for over a hundred and fifty years (for an excellent history on gay steambaths log on to www.gaytubs.com).
Where is the harm in men attending a gay steambath? I would argue there was more harm done by police officers to the men they arrested than not. One man, apparently married and deeply closeted, became violently ill during the raid. The emotional ramifications of the raid on the men are incalculable. Terror. Depression. Anxiety. Shame when there is no cause for shame. That is the legacy of such raids. In the last raid against the Pisces in Edmonton in 1981, one man charged as a “found-in” committed suicide. People’s lives are severely impacted… and for what? Because they went to a gay steambath believing it was legal to do so and that they would be safe? Whether or not individuals within the gay community, or dominant culture for that matter, “agree” with such establishments is ultimately irrelevant. Does the existence of such establishments contravene community standards? That remains to be seen in court. I would argue that “community standards” would tolerate such environments even while not necessarily agreeing with them or liking having them. Rather than trying to curry favour with the heterosexual culture by cluck-clucking over such places, I would suggest individuals consider that there, but for the grace of the Deity, go they. If individuals within our community have ever engaged in a threesome, had sex anywhere but their home, used a contact phone line, or picked another man up to take home for sex the State, or its agents, could come after them next. The line just moved a few notches back. Contributions to the Goliath’s Defence Fund can be made by cheque or money order, payable to “Stephen Lock (trustee).” In the memo section write “to be held in trust for the Goliath’s Defence Fund” and mail to: The Goliath’s Defence Fund, c/o The Calgary Eagle, 424-a 8th Ave SE, Calgary AB T2G 0L7. All proceeds go to defray the legal costs of the man charged as a found-in.

CROWN’S for kids
Toy drive encompasses Xmas spirit
gaycalgary.com magazine
By Jason Clevett
In 1996, then-reigning Empress XX Mz. Rhonda del ray Rockafella returned from a trip to San Diego inspired by their court to start “Crown’s for Kids,” a charity designed to provide toys to children in need. When she stepped down, she proclaimed that she would continue to do the project “Until I die or pass it on to someone else.” Now in it’s 7th year, the toy drive continues to be a success.
Christmas is a time when everyone comes together. There is no gender or politics; people come together to give from their hearts. “Every year it never ceases to amaze me how the community comes out and supports the project. For example, at this year’s kick off show, a gentleman was in the club who did not realize the significance of the evening. He believed in the cause, put his hand in his pocket, and pulled out the money he had there. It ended up being $105, and he donated it to the drive that night. Boxes have always been overflowing with toys each year.” It is this kind of generosity that overwhelms Rhonda every year. “Christmas is a time when everyone comes together. There is no gender or politics; people come together to give from their hearts. For some people this is the only way they can be parents because many in the gay and lesbian community don’t get the chance to buy toys at Christmas. This gives them the opportunity to go out to buy and donate the toys; it makes them feel good. The gifts go to children who would not otherwise have anything under the tree at Christmas.” As a parent herself, the project is one that hits close to his heart. “I grew up in a home where we never went without something under the tree. My children haven’t either. It tugs at my heartstrings to know that children may not have something on Christmas morning.” Although the drive and its totals are included in the numerous charitable events that the I.S.C.C.A is involved in every year, the project is Rhonda’s baby, and she is in charge of all aspects of the fund raiser. “I collect the money, keep the records, and submit receipts and everything to our treasurer in January.” Toys donated benefit services in Calgary, including The Children’s Cottage, The Children’s Hospital, The Women’s Shelter, Ronald McDonald House, and The Salvation Army Village for Children, as well as private families. “I’ve had people approach me who have known couples who were in need of toys for their children. Last year, I had an employee who had just moved his wife and four children to Calgary from Asia, and it was a bleak Christmas. We were able to help him out, and all of his children had something underneath the tree.” Rhonda also takes a portion of the cash donated and contributes it to Avenue 15, which is an organization for teenagers. The money is used to buy gift certificates to music stores, so that children of all ages are taken care of.
For the first five years, the drive kicked off at the Midnight Café and bar. When it closed down two years ago, the I.S.C.C.A. kick off event found new homes. Last year the show was at The Verge. This past November 9, the kick off was hosted at Boyztown, with a drag show in which proceeds from the cover charge and 50/50 tickets went to the charity. The event runs until December 19th. Boyztown has always been a big supporter of the project, which Rhonda greatly appreciates. Every year the staff of the bar has gets together and goes crazy shopping for toys. They make the final donation on the closing night. Toys can be dropped off at one of three locations. PRIAPE Calgary at 1322 17th Avenue SE, Rainbow Pride Resource Center at 1230A 17th Avenue SW and The Calgary Eagle at 424A 8th Avenue SE. Rhonda is happy that this is the first time Calgary’s Leather Community has gotten behind the drive. Those wishing to donate are asked to drop of unwrapped toys at the listed locations, and those wishing to make money donations are asked to make cheques out directly to the Imperial Court of the Chinook Arch. The drive continues to grow each year as the Gay Community comes out in force to support the worthwhile cause. Plans are in effect to bring “Crowns for Kids” to courts in Edmonton and Vancouver, with Rhonda being involved with them. For the moment, all focus is on this year. Last year $6,500 in toys and money was donated. Rhonda would like to top last year’s total, but it is not the driving force behind the campaign. “I’ve never set a goal. I don’t run it as a competition; whatever comes in comes in. The fact we are helping kids is what is important.”

A Krazay Music Review Review | Music
By DJ Krazay Steve
Seasons Greetings. Who is Krazay? What is music? I’m sure these two questions will always be in the back of your mind. I have been a DJ for 20 years. My job helped me to meet new people: make them smile for some reason, help others forget about their problems, and help some to advertise what they got so they can get laid! It is sure a privilege to have a chance to write a column once a month for GayCalgary Magazine. I will try to do the best possible job of being fair of everything that might come out in the music industry. Today’s music sure has taken a URBAN swing. I find a great funky beats with other song samples, song samples with fast funky beats, have been moving people on the dance floor. Anywhere from Justin Timberlake to Ludicris, Christina to Cher, Smashmouth to Hot Red Chili Peppers, or just music that takes you to that edge like Quicksilver to Fragma and beyond. As a DJ, I’ll comment on tracks that have been just or are soon-to-be released. That’s right. An edge. Getting to know music always gets my heart going. Let’s dive in! ***** Outkast - Hey Ya Has a funky rock groove that is just swarming my dance floor. It reminds me a bit of Rockafella Shank laid back. Has a nice guitar strum with nice vocals. Maybe it’s a new style. It throws you off on and off beat as they add two beats to the regular 8 bar scenario. *** Britney Spears - Outrageous What happened here? Did someone get to know Madonna a little too well? Seems like Britney Diva has a little hot stuff in her. Is she getting older? I’m sure this track will make you wonder what could possibly be next. **** Mis-Teeq - Scandalous If you like En Vogue you’re going to like this track. A sort of new/old sounding 80’s track with today feel to it. The vocals are killer! **** Cyndi Lauper - At Last Very nice to hear Cyndi come back in such a mature way. There are a couple of new songs on this album, but most of the tunes are remixes from other artists. Cyndi puts the original artists to shame with her powerhouse vocals. A must get!

da’ boyz Metro Boyztown & the Rekroom - serving the Calgary community for 15 years By Jason Clevett
In November, Metro Boyztown & the Rekroom celebrated its 15 year anniversary. A private club, it is open to members of guests and caters to Calgary’s gay community. Recently Gaycalgary.com sat down with owners Ken Annebo, Kevin Bateman and Ellie Brewer to discuss their role in the community, the bar, and how the gay life in Calgary has changed since they opened.

gaycalgary.com magazine
It’s Metro Boyztown’s & the Rekroom’s 15th Anniversary. Give us a bit of history about how the club came together. Annebo: A group of us got together and felt that there was a need for a new bar in town, and that was pretty much the beginning.
groups, which are quite popular. It is always important to have different social avenues for people to meet. We try and support these groups as much as possible and open up our doors for them to do fund raising and as a meeting place. How have you seen the clientele change?
You are still here while a number of clubs in Calgary, both gay and straight, haven’t been as successful and have closed their doors; Boyztown and Detour are still thriving. How do you feel about the club scene and what is your secret to success? Bateman: It’s not as much of a big deal to go to a gay or mixed bar anymore. You can go anywhere and see gay people mixing with straight people in any establishment. We offer something unique for our members and their guests; other clubs do the same thing. What changes have you seen over the years in the gay community? Annebo: The city has grown and expanded so much, and the larger a city gets, the more diversified it, and especially the gay community, gets. There are a ton of gay organizations, from gay parents to religious organizations and sports leagues, that have blossomed and flourished because the population has warranted that. We have been fortunate to be here for 15 years; I think we fill a niche in the community, other bars fill theirs. There is always room to grow and expand, and hopefully in the future, there will be more exciting things happening in Calgary for the gay community. Brewer: There’s been a demand by the community to establish some other interests and points of reference besides clubs, which is why organizations have done so well. People are enjoying other social activities aside from coming to the nightclub, such as the sports and university
Brewer: (laughing) We’ve all gotten older! Annebo: It’s a cycle. As Calgary changes so does the club scene. A lot of older guys have left the city, moved on to different scenes or settled down with family or careers. But there always seems to be a fresh crop of new young kids that come out to enjoy the music and the atmosphere. Boyztown has special events such as Charity Pool Tournaments, meet and greets for Apollo and ARGRA events, Amateur Strip, Hot Butt and the Sunday Drag Shows. How did you come up with the ideas for these, and how would you rate their success? Bateman: We are continually throwing ideas back and forth. There is no such thing as a bad idea, it may work, and it may not. Annebo: We borrow ideas from other clubs, in the city and internationally and put our own twist on them. Does doing specialty nights like the Wed Night Amateur Strip shows boost the attendance on what would otherwise be a slow night? Annebo: Naked anything works. If people like it, they come. There is some criticism over the fact that you are a members only club and only allow gay men and their guests into the club. How do you respond to the critics? Annebo: After 15 years, I think our formula has worked so far. That’s not to say that will be the formula

forever, but we supply a role to the community as well as a place for gay men and their friends to have a good time.
try to provide a well-rounded social environment that a lot of groups benefit from.
Bateman: At the time it was a business decision, and it works for us. I think it is rare that we are criticized for providing a space for people to relax and be themselves in. There may be criticism that we haven’t heard, but people will always have something to complain about.
How does it feel to have reached 15 years in business?
Do you feel that being Members Only has an advantage in that everyone in the club is gay? Bateman: Coming out is a process everyone goes through. Sooner or later, everyone comes to terms with it, and will find themselves happy to be wherever they choose to be. If I was just coming out, I would be more concerned about going somewhere where it is an open environment and my co-workers were sitting at the next table outing me. I would be far more comfortable in a place where I knew everyone was gay.
Brewer: It is a real milestone for any club regardless of what the membership or the clientele that they cater to. It really reflects on our genuine concern and hands on approach here. We are not absentee owners; we are here every day making sure it’s the best it possible can be. That is the secret to success in any business, that mentality right from management down to the staff. Metro Boyztown 213 10th Avenue SW www.metroboyztown.com the Rekroom 213A 10th Avenue S.W. www.therekroom.com
Annebo: Being a private club helps some gay men who haven’t come out of the closet to enter the door for the first time and know that they are protected within it’s walls and that most people here are gay. It alleviates a lot of the stress of coming out.
Being a private club helps some gay men who haven’t come out of the closet to enter the door for the first time and know that they are protected within it’s walls and that most people here are gay. It alleviates a lot of the stress of coming out. Where do you see the Calgary gay community going in the future? Annebo: The Gay Pride Parade and week is an example of the exuberance and feeling of acceptance in this city. Years ago we would be lucky if we had 20 people do a gay parade, now we have all of 17th Avenue to work with. Making gays feel more comfortable within the straight community and with their own sexuality is important, and it will only get better. What defines Metro Boyztown & the Rekroom? Brewer: Our attitude. Although we are a members club we do pride ourselves on the positive things that we have done here. Our attitude is that we are continually looking for new and different entertainment, to change things up and make the club look a little different. We try to make being here as affordable as possible, such as drink prices and membership fees. We take a lot of pride in the establishment, how well it is run and the atmosphere. We

Calgary Eagle Inc. Finger licking treats
Review | Food
By M. Zelda Located at 424A 8th Avenue SE. When you go to Calgary Eagle Inc., be prepared to get your fingers sticky. Calgary’s leather-fetish bar offers up finger licking treats – at reasonable prices. For a snack, Calgary Eagle Inc. serves up munchies like homemade personal pizzas, nachos, and Eagle Poppers, and on occasion, incredibly tasty honey garlic chicken wings made with the chef’s personal recipe. The starters – salad or soup – come in Boy or Sir size to accommodate any appetite. For main meals, the choices include smokies, chilli, chicken pot pie, and veggie curry pie. I chose the one of the most popular menu items – Bones – their large beef ribs because they came highly recommended. The beef ribs came with my choice of pasta green salad – or both. I picked the pasta salad and was pleasantly surprised by the firm noodles and the flavourful dressing. The beef bones were tender and juicy with a succulent sauce. It was easy to understand why this is one of the most popular items on the menu. Once a month, the Calgary Eagle Inc. offers a homemade Sunday dinner for just $10. In the summer, they might serve big hamburgers or have a pig roast. In November, it was ham and scalloped potatoes. December’s Sunday dinner will be extra special, however. The third Sunday of December – December 21, 2003 – the second annual Orphans’ Christmas will be held, starting at 4:00 pm. This event was designed for people who don’t have family. And, for many of the participants, it is their big Christmas party. For only $15, participants will receive a full traditional turkey dinner with homemade Christmas sweets – cake and cookies. Also included in the price is a gift. Everyone in attendance will be able to participate in a Chinese Christmas gift exchange. Gifts that aren’t kept will go to the Calgary Drop-In Centre. This year about 40-45 people are expected. Also this December, be sure to buy the annual SHARP calendar. Proceeds from this $15 black and white calendar go towards housing for individuals with HIV.
