Thank-you Calgary! The Pride Calgary Planning Committee would like to thank everyone who helped us out along the way to our 20th anniversary Pride celebration. We couldn’t have done this without the support of our community, who gave us valuable feedback on what Pride is to them; the GLTBA business owners, who generously supported our events and merchant loyalty program; our volunteers, who are always there to lend a helping hand, and of course our valued sponsors, without whom we wouldn’t have had the funding to bring this 20th anniversary celebration of pride and human rights to life.

T

he Stonewall Riots – where it all began. Police raids on gay bars were routine in the 1960s, and often unnecessary force was used. The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. The riots are frequently cited as the first instance in modern Queer history when people in the GLTBA community fought back

against a government-sponsored system that persecuted sexual minorities. Today Stonewall has become the defining event that marked the start of the gay rights movement around the world.

VISION STATEMENT Pride Calgary will work to attain acceptance and equality for Calgary’s LGBTA community through creating a safe and fun Pride Event where all Calgarians are welcome.

We understand. Fully.

Pride Calgary’s 20th Anniversary (r)evolution

P

ride Week is an annual celebration within Calgary’s Gay/lesbian/bisexual/Two-Spirited and transgendered communities. Like Pride celebrations around the world, Calgary’s Pride week commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Calgary has celebrated Pride since 1990. That first rally - minus a parade, which was believed to be too radical even for 1990s Calgary - attracted 192 people. Some participants even wore paper bags over their heads. Since 1990, Calgary’s population has grown by over 21% to more than a million people. This influx has changed the soul of Calgary, bringing more diversity and culture along with the people. Today our GLTBA community has over 60 volunteer-operated and self-funded community organizations, as well as a plethora of queer and ally owned businesses. Our city and community continues to grow and flourish, and we look forward to a vibrant future, where diversity is not only accepted, but also celebrated.

Pride Calgary 2010 Parade Grand Marshall

T

oni Vere is a Calgary GLBTA favorite. A solo singer and a member of the musical group Hashmagandy, Toni has entertained audiences with her enigmatic, and enlightening voice and musical style. She is a staple in the Calgary music scene, and is making her name known through the rest of North America. Pride Calgary is honored to have Toni Vere as 2010’s Parade Grand Marshall. In her own words, Toni could not be more thrilled with this honor. “To me, Pride is a celebration and the opportunity to honor who we are as 13

individuals within our community. Here we are, within this great country we live in where we have the right to just be who we are! It’s an event when I take the time to look back and reflect on my own personal journey with “Pride” and am so thankful that I have found this place of comfort in my life. I can raise my hand up in the air and say, “Yes, I’m A Lesbian! We should all be proud of who we are and honor our diversity. Just by being comfortable in your own skin you’re making a statement to your neighbors, your co-workers, or your family. Truth always triumphs. Rock on!”
