Introduction
Lord Mayor The publication of the report “Imagine our Future”, Cork City Development Board’s 10 year integrated strategy marks an important step towards the achievement of Objective 86, which states that “The Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual (GLB) communities will be enabled to fully participate in the social cultural and economic life of Cork City” As highlighted in the report this work is of both local and national level significance, as it is the first time that the actual needs of specific GLB community have been identified in terms of existing research and prior recommendations. It is also important to note that Cork City Development Board is the only Development Board to have specifically named the GLB community in their strategic plan. This fact is recognised by the NESF in their report on “Equality Policies for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual People; Implementation Issues”, where the approach taken by the Board is recognised as a model of good practice.

We often have to answer questions such as “What is PRIDE about?” and “What are you Marching For?” And it is timely to remember that PRIDE is not a celebration of lifestyle, what ever that is, but is a remembrance and celebration of the STONEWALL RIOTS and of the liberation and civil rights movement that have followed on from that seminal event. There is a direct and traceable line of achievements from those events to the current debate on civil marriage. The major events in between such as decriminalisation and equality legislation are other examples of what has been achieved by a community that until quite recently operated in the shadows and on the verges of political and social life in Ireland.
A significant cultural event for the community is the annual PRIDE celebrations, which mark and celebrate the struggle for equality and cite which began in the late sixties with the Stonewall Riots in New York and influenced many citizenship movements world wide. Cork has a long and proud tradition of activism on Gay and Lesbian issues and is home to a vibrant community. The existence of such a community in any city is a benchmark for a diverse and equitable society and is a matter of PRIDE. So we welcome the valuable contribution that the gay and lesbian community makes to our city and wish them success in their celebrations. Happy PRIDE.
In this context the parade may be understood. I do not think we march FOR but BECAUSE, because we can and should. Who would deny the French Bastille Day, The Mexicans the 5th of May or even the Americans the 4th of July? These are all celebrations of the symbols of liberty. The movement and struggle for these liberties did not just happen on these dates but these dates have come to symbolise the whole movement and so it is with us and our symbol, PRIDE. Dave Roche

2.30pm. Pride Parade 2008. The big event of the week!! Be there as a spectator or, more importantly, to march. This year’s parade promises to be the best and brightest to date. Assembly Point: City Library. Grand Parade. Route; Grand Parade. South Mall. Parnell Place. Merchant’s Quay. Patrick Street. Grand Parade. We did something special with our parade this year - we set up a series of workshops throughout April and May with Cork Community Art Link so that members of the community could learn specific artistic skills and build costumes, props and floats for the parade. A poll on gaycork.com determined the theme of the parade; carnival and we decided to add a Venetian Carnevale twist. We held mask, giant puppet, costume and float-making workshops which were a lot of fun and have given this years parade a much more polished look. We hope you enjoy the results! 5pm - 7pm Loafers, Douglas Street Annual Pride Barbecue 7pm. Loafers, Douglas Street DJ Betty Herring comes down from Galway 8pm.
