Lord Mayor’s Address It is my privilege to welcome you all to Cork to celebrate Gay Pride this year. Cork is a proud City and rightly so. The Lonely Planet Guide has listed Cork as one of the top cities in the World. It states ‘Cork is at the top of its game right now: sophisticated, vibrant and diverse, while still retaining its friendliness, relaxed charm and quick-fire wit.’ I am proud of the City’s diverse heritage. Indeed in relation to Gay and Lesbian issues Cork has one of the longest established gay organisations in Ireland and the only lesbian centre in Ireland. Recently the City Council in conjunction with the City Interagency LGBT steering group arranged a LGBT Awareness Week to mark Idaho day. I hope that this awareness week will become a regular event in the life of the City. I congratulate the organisers of Pride Week for the successful organisation of the event. I recognise the contribution of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual people living and working in the City. Again I welcome all those visiting the City for the Pride festival and hope that you will come back to visit us again soon. Go néirí leis an obair agus go mairfimid beo go dtí an t-am seo arís. Good luck with the work and may we live to be here again next year. Councillor Michael O’Connell Lord Mayor of Cork

Letter From The Chairman We would like to welcome you to the 6th Cork Pride Festival. To those who haven’t experienced Cork Pride before, shame on you! But congratulations on getting here in the end. To those who have partied with us before, you know what to expect... Last years theme was “We are Family”, which not only encompassed the LGBT communities alliance to the myriad of its groups as an inclusive ‘’family”, but also reflected on the fact that everybody has a friend or family member from the LGBT community, and Pride is a celebration of their diversity. This years theme is “Evolution”, and as such, we have decided to highlight, and to celebrate how far the LGBT community has evolved and progressed in a relatively short period of time. From the Decriminalisation of Homosexuality in 1993 to the Equal Status Act of 2000,and finally the Civil Partnership Bill of 2010,which,although a step in the right direction, still doesn’t go far enough, but hopefully will evolve into equality and full marriage, in the very near future. Far from being the marginalised displays they once were, the majority of Pride Festivals have now integrated into the mainstream of society as being a valid, and most importantly, fun way of highlighting LGBT people, and creating better awareness of LGBT issues. This being said, it is also important to keep our identity, and to embrace, and celebrate our diversity. The Cork Pride Festival, which is the largest in the country outside the Capital, attracted over 5000 people last year to the main weekend of festivities. We are justifiably proud of our Parade which has come from humble beginnings many moons ago, when just a few brave souls marched down Patrick Street, in what was a very different Ireland. Finally, I would like to congratulate and thank all of the people who help to make The Cork Pride Festival the brilliant success it is, from the Committee, to the Venues, our Sponsors, Friends and Advertisers (often who are one and the same thing..) Your support is greatly appreciated. Let the party begin! Clive Davis Chairman Cork Pride Committee 2011

Monday 30th Queer as Political Exhibition
In celebration of Cork Pride 2011, Cork Feminista is hosting an art exhibition titled ‘Queer As Political’. Feminist and queer politics have always overlapped, intermingled and struggled with each other. We want to take this opportunity to reflect on Pride’s inspirational history as a political and cultural struggle and the ongoing fight for access to rights, resources and equality that feminists and LGBT communities share. Identifying as ‘queer’ is a transgressive act that challenges the dominant structures and stereotypes. ‘Queer as Political’ explores ways that queer identities are inherently and overtly political.

Law Matters
Veronica Foley, Solicitor of Hannon Solicitors, North Gate Bridge, Cork, who has over 18 years experience in family law matters will give a brief talk and answer questions on the general effects of the new Civil Partnership Act (or the Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act 2010 to give its longwinded title) which commenced in law on 1st January 2011. This Act created the new legal set-up for Civil Partnerships and for the Relationship of Cohabitants in Ireland. Civil Partnership being now created by registration, and the Cohabitant Relationship by the passage of time only. This complex Act brings in a complete new approach to how non-marital relationships are now governed by our laws, and bring many changes unforeseen by the law profession and public at large. It is hoped this talk will bring some clarity to the various issues involved Venue: The Other Place Time: 7:30pm Adm: Free Map: D2

The Parade!! - 3pm - Grand Parade Evolution. Dictionary definition : development, progress This year, we have chosen “Evolution” as the core theme of The Cork Pride Festival Parade. Far from being an academic, Darwinian interpretation of what evolution means (although the further evolution that is apparent looking at Darwin’s theory of Evolution from Ape to Man, and then from knuckle-dragging man to sartorially exquisite gay doesn’t, for some reason, appear in any Natural History books...) our focus, although no less relevant(!) is more entrenched in popular culture.
“Darwinian man, though well behaved, at best is only a monkey shaved...” “It is hard for the ape to believe that he W.S. Gilbert descended from man...” H.L. From the psychedelic fabulousness of Flower Power and The Swinging Sixties, to the sparkling spandex, lurid lurex (and Abba!) of the Seventies, to the positively tasteful leg-warmers, shoulderpads and eyeshadow of the Eighties (and that was just the guys!) Yes, this year, we’re camping it up, with a glittering display of fashion f*** ups...
Decades...
Special thanks are once again due to our amazingly creative friends at Cork Community Art Links, whose help has been invaluable and inspirational in Artistic Direction, and in creating this amazing visual spectacle. Thanks also to the venues, volunteers, friends, floaters and floatees, without whom none of this would happen.
