Happy Pride from KATHLEEN LYNCH TD 021 439 9930 WORKING WITH YOU WORKING FOR YOU
Letter from The Lord Mayor The Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual agenda has been advanced in Cork City through Objective 86 of the City’s Economic, Social, and Cultural Strategy ‘Imagine our Future’. Objective 86 states ‘The Gay and Lesbian Communities will be enabled to fully participate in the Social, Cultural and Economic life of Cork City’. The City Development Board oversees an interagency steering committee looking at lesbian, gay and bisexual issues in the city. This committee is currently looking at ways to educate the staff of public bodies on LGB issues both in service delivery and also raising awareness that lesbians, gays and bisexuals are working in the public bodies. Actions are being formulated in the short term for the City Development Board’s Strategy review which will provide a raised awareness in public sector agencies of issues affecting the LGB community as customers and as employees and also the implementation of professional training programmes for staff in the Public Sector. Cork City Council in its document ‘Social Inclusion and Cork City Council – A Guide for Employees’ defines sexual orientation for its staff and makes it clear that lesbians and gay men form part of the staff as well as being gay and lesbian customers.

For three weeks in May the City Council is facilitating the promotion of Gay Pride Week by erecting banners on the eastern entry to the City at Dunkettle. It reflects the commitment of Cork City Council to equality generally and specifically acknowledges the contribution of a proportion of Cork’s population who are gay, lesbian and bisexual to the life of our city. Letter from The Chairman Welcome all to Cork Pride 2009. This year we have laid on a programme to suit all tastes.......well, almost all tastes! This after all is Cork, a city of taste and refinement. We have events occurring from sea level (The Basement Theatre at The Other Place) to Carrauntoohil (1038m), Ireland’s highest mountain. The Pride Movement which developed from the Gay Liberation Parades of the 1970’s has furthered the cause of Gay Rights throughout the world

The use of the word “Pride” is an antonym of shame which has been used to control and suppress LGBT’s throughout history. We believe Pride is essential to show our solidarity with LGBT’s in the 93 countries where homosexuality is still a crime and especially those who have to live in countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia where the death penalty is still in force for such “crimes”. A feature of Cork Pride ’09 of which we are particularly pleased is the number of non-gay businesses who have supported us either through advertising or donating prizes for the fund raising events we have held. Please support them during the week. A special word of thanks to Rev. Brian O’Rourke who has kindly agreed to conduct the Pride service in St. Ann’s Shandon on Wednesday evening. Another innovation this year is The REBEL Awards Dinner, a glamorous evening set aside on the eve of the Parade to allow the LGBT community to get together and recognise the dedication of individuals and groups that have made a difference. We’re delighted that Panti, Fabula, Scott’s, and all of the venues have thrown their support behind this event. Much appreciation is due to the members of the committee, volunteers, LINC, and The Cork Gay Community Development Project. Tony Doherty Chairman Cork Pride ‘09

Although these moments are disconnected in terms of time and space they are indelibly linked through the fabric of LGBT rights campaigning. Each of the separate outcomes, however, demonstrates that this campaigning is far from concluded. Marriage equality, adoption privileges and other forms of equality legislation are still only sporadically available while many parts of the world do not even enjoy recognition of the most basic rights. Further global campaigning and support is essential to attain equality at all levels.

LGBT Pride and global visibility. LGBT Pride means many different things to different people. In essence it is an expression of pride by LGBT people of their own immutable and diverse sexual and gender identities. Pride stands in opposition to oppression, repression and shame of these identities and has grown into a global movement from the 1960s and Stonewall through to today. Pride manifests itself in highly visible forms of activism, education, and the singular expression of the Pride parade. 2009 marks the fortieth anniversary of the Stonewall riots which acted as a catalyst for LGBT rights activism. Stonewall has become a cultural touchstone in the intervening years marking the moment when LGBT people became a community and a significant voice. In 1970 numerous marches were organised to commemorate the events of the previous year and thus the Pride parade was inaugurated. Today, Pride parades express the intention to remain unified, visible and vocal in terms of LGBT identity, welfare and equality. Recent Pride parades in Serbia and Latvia have met with difficulty while the banning of parades in Poland has been found to violate the European Convention on Human Rights. Such practice continues in Russia. Encouragingly, parades in Taiwan and India have gained in success while centres in South Africa, Brazil, the US and the EU continue to thrive. Often expressed in highly colourful ways Pride is an important articulation of diversity and identity, 2009 holding special significance as a celebration of visibility.

Gay Pride: Our Flag The Pride flag or “Gay and Lesbian flag” has been a community symbol since 1978 when Gilbert Baker made the first initial flag with six stripes. The flag was made to represent the diversity within the Gay and Lesbian community which has now changed and embraced a variety of more and more people, hence today LGBT. The flags individual colours all represent something different, however they can be broadly described as meaning: “Sexuaity, healing, nature, art, harmony, spirit and sun”. The flag was made in response to other Gay and Lesbian symbols (such as the Purple Triangle often asscioted with Nazism etc) and to unify all under one flag. The Pride flag is a reconised flag of the International Congress of Flag Makers and is flown at all LGBT parades and homes as a symbol of Pride and as an offical symbol for LGBT. The flag reminds us that ours is a diverse community - composed of people with a variety of individual tastes of which we should all be proud.

It takes no compromising to give people their rights. “It takes no compromising to give people their rights. It takes no money to respect the individual. It takes no survey to remove repressions” (Harvey Milk) IN 1993 Irish gay rights were significantly imrpoved by the decriminalisation of homosexuality. However, this did not bring with it complete equality. It has become increasingly apparent there is still a great deal to campaign for. In particular, the removal of the IBTS blood ban and religious exemptions to employment equality legislation, extended travel pass rights, marriage equality and comprehensive adoption privileges are issues yet to be addressed by the government. Furthermore, the proposed Civil Partnership Bill has two parts. This bill is part presumptive rights for gay and straight couples, and part registration scheme for gay relationships. Unlike the relative equality afforded by Civil Unions in the UK, Civil Partnership in Ireland would not equal marriage and will further institutionalise inequality. In addition, tax rates for Civil Partners would be higher than for married couples, which essentially means gay couples will be taxed more for being gay. Achieving full equality demands that we combat apathy, move beyond personal ideology and all stand up to have our voices heard This is about ensuring that nobody is treated as a second class citizen. It is not about whether we believe marriage is something to aspire to; rather it is to ensure that the option is in place for each and every citizen to have access to the same rights. It takes no compromising.
