The Morning After The Night Before...

The morning after the night before is a photo shoot inspired by a street and urban trend. It was styled for a music and fashion magazine, and appeals to both male and females. The overall concept was to create a relaxed and cool environment in which both models felt comfortable in one another’s company. It also portrays a punk rock and edgy vibe.

The Inspirational Issue

This photo shoot is inspired by one of my role models Darcey Bussell. The famous ballerina is very elegant, ladylike and graceful. These elements were a huge inspiration towards the photo shoot. I wanted to portray these features combining with a quirky fashion twist by experimenting with styling and accessories. In keeping with the traditional ballet image was crucial, and it also added a controversial take on the theme.

I

t was as if the room had an instant optimistic feel about it when Daisy Finetto entered, her individual style made her seem so ‘cool’. Wearing white sneaker high tops, wet look leggings and a big fur coat that looked like it was almost hugging her; she was very welcoming and made the whole environment in the room comfortable. First impressions of the Indie girl, singer, and song writer were that she is fun and smiley. Maybe a bit of a joker? From style icon Alexa Chung to successful lead singer Florence Welch, Daisy Finetto has her own distinct style down to a tee. Part of the new, fun and quirky band, 21 year old lead singer Daisy is joined by her brother Thomas Finetto, drummer Benji Huntrods and assisting guitarist Ben Brown to form the band Mausi. The group all met in Newcastle where they realised they joined together with their talent and passion for music. Siblings Daisy and Thomas are from Milan, Italy. They only moved over to England to study at University. Whether or not this has anything to do with Daisy’s outtake on fashion, the lead singer is definitely style personified and has engaged her own approach to the style industry. Her own chic twist fits the style of the band and their sound perfectly. Daisy describes Mausi’s sound as ‘Euro-indie-synth-pop’. Their new single certainly lives up to this and makes easy listening to a point where it is almost addictive, most iPods will most definitely have their new track ‘Sol’ on repeat. Focusing on Daisy’s unique look, when asked who her music influences were, she answered; ‘Some of the female artists and bands that influence me are Lana Del Ray, Imogen Heap, The Noisettes, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s and Metric.’ As a band they agreed that their main aspirations are towards French indie rock band Phoenix. Groups like The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs and The Noisettes work so well because the bands as a whole are fun, outgoing, and daring. Just like Mausi using a striking and bubbly female lead singer appeals to a wider audience and intrigues the listeners into them over and over. Daisy on the other hand stands out from that ‘Rock and roll’ lifestyle of demand and convention, she says; ‘I personally like a little bit of vintage, I like modifying clothes I buy cheaply. I like to follow trends so spending a lot of money on them would make me broke. I Love Camden market’ Daisy’s creative mind not only excels in her song writing but fashion sense too, she likes to experiment with trends to fit to her own manner. When asked what her most inspiring trend was at the minute she answered, ‘I am loving animal print at the moment. Black, bulky heels. Skulls’. Daring Daisy states that she is ‘Loving Givenchy’ at the minute, with the new collection for Autumn/ Winter 2011, Daisy could definitely rock the stage with the new quirky floral patterns and sharpish black skirts. Daisy appears so natural in the environment of performing live, and her body language gives it away that it is where she is supposed to be. However the band obviously wouldn’t be Mausi without the rest of the eye candy to complete the band and its look. Benji, Thomas and Ben also pull off their own style to symbolise their part in the band. It’s all about the tidy pumps, chinos and simple tees to get the complete well-groomed Mausi look. Their simplicity yet stylish look works well as it compliments and enhances Daisy’s look. Let’s face it, this band have it all. Their attitude towards each other was casual and fun.

First impressions were that each member is creative thinker and all have a strong personalities to contribute towards the band. Soon enough they will be taking over the gig venues, fashion magazines and be all over the radio. Nevertheless they have all worked extremely hard to get to where they are now. Daisy is studying Design for Industry at University in her final year. However she always finds the time to spend with the band, playing, promoting and continuously thinking of new ideas with her creative mind. But what makes them so loveable is, despite the pressures, the fact they are still always so friendly, exciting and no matter what, always having fun and enjoying what they love most. On and off stage Daisy believes there are no hidden traits, she is who she is, and the effortless look comes easily keeps to her distinctive style no matter the occasion. She pulls off the red hair and sharp style fringe very well, almost resembling Karen O from The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Behind her indie rock haircut, perfect for going wild when on stage, Daisy gets away with wearing simplicity make up. Her flawless face enables her to show off her features without that over the top caked in face-paint look most pop stars tend to go for these days. The orange jumpsuit Daisy wears in the photo shoot was chosen by herself. The accessories she compliments it with work superbly. She knows exactly what looks amazing and what doesn’t. Well it’s no hidden gem or trick up the sleeve, Daisy confesses; ‘Vintage shops, online, Primark, Urban Outfitters, Markets’. High street in fact is the place to find these ideal items. It is a case of looking hard and experimenting with out of the ordinary garments that you wouldn’t usually think twice about trying it on. ‘Probably a new pair of heels I bought from Office the other week. Big black chunky wedge strappy heels. Yum’. Says Daisy as she talks about what her essentials in her wardrobe are at the minute. Daisy can also pull off that glamorous pop star look when she models her favourite pair of black heels, which are sensational.

‘I am loving animal print at the moment. Black, bulky heels. Skulls. Loving Givenchy.’

When performing Daisy admits to always styling herself and thinks it is important to portray what she wants through her clothes, and not someone else telling her what she should look like. As well as this the band produced their own music video to their new single ‘Sol’. It is based around summer time so it is very energetic. A very artist approach has been put towards the outcome of the video, using their own photos and videos whilst on tour, just following their journey. It looks amazing. Mausi admits to the bands love for fashion, and how it is crucial for a group to have their own, individual image to set themselves apart from the artists out there. Mausi have done a great job of creating their own look to suit their sound and personalities perfectly, without even trying it came hand in hand. ‘The Kitsune record label inspire us as it’s a cross over between music and fashion, we believe that alongside making music a band needs to have an awesome image’. Kitsune cover a huge area in the Music industry, mainly focusing on Indie, Electro bands and artists. Their successful fashion line inspires Mausi to also consider doing their own fashion collaboration one day; ‘We would love to work with Kitsune and release a clothing brand with them’ The fun loving band make it pretty obvious that they have high ambitions, in which they are guaranteed to fulfil, but also show they are a tight knit group of friends doing what they love most and what comes as second nature to them.

‘A gig we played at the beginning of the year in Cambridge, it was a student ball and there was free food, free drink and bouncy castles all night, the band did a great job, and it was a very successful evening all round. Awesome’. During the photo shoot Mausi confessed they preferred a more casual look rather than a posy album cover shoot. Agreeable, it suited them a lot better and gets the perception of their band across; they were really entertaining to be around. Mausi revealed that a lot of their material was inspired by Daisy and Tom’s home in Italy, where they spent a lot of time together as a band. Enjoying the culture, sun shine and no doubt night life, just like any other students, they were are down to earth and really know how to lift the ambience. Having a European influence is a brilliant asset to their sound to bring in a good beat and toe tapping base line. Mausi are currently doing a tour around small venues in the UK, this is to help launch their new Single and generally make awareness about how exceptional this new band really is. Like most musicians people adapt and change over time to fit to their band, nevertheless Daisy has it spot on at this point in time, and hopefully always will. With her vintage edge and classic haircut. Daisy left taking her smile and charisma with her it’s almost inevitable we will definitely be seeing her again in the near future.

Visual Merchandising

D

Dunhill provided a theme on ‘Quadratura’, from this we were required to develop a concept and design that would fit into the Dunhill store in London. My outcome focuses on the Dunhill heritage and keeps the idea of traditional English woven clothes. Therefore my concept involved yarn and yarn cones. In this it represented the initial theme of ‘Quadratura’ by the way the yarn inter woven into a perspective. My design was shortlisted as a window display for the London Dunhill store.

If Music Could Talk

This project is inspired by my passion for music. I designed an exhibition that would showcase music photography from 1960s to present day. I focused on the location, promotional aspects and the whole running of the event. I wanted to create an underground and quirky atmosphere to fit in with the photography. I designed some types of guerrilla marketing and photoshop images to support my overall concept for the event.

Publications

Magazine PLUGGED IN is a magazine targeted towards music and style lovers. The publication is designed to represent myself and all the things that i am interested in. It has a gruny and student feel to it. It included articles on festivals, album reviews and fashion shoots, as well as an interview and photoshoot with a band. Aimed at both male and female there is a wide variety of fashion and music topics covered that will appeal to both.

Trend prediction This project discoveres four possible new trends for Spring/Summer 2012. I researched into Renewable Energy as a common topic of society today. From this I developed a concept, mood board, colour palette and textures. The four trends were titled; Tidal, Turbulence, Raindrops and Solar. These represent the 4 main elements of Renewable Energy.

Final Major Project The final major project was based on a topic of our choice. As I enjoyed previous events modules I decided to collaborate all my expertise and came up with my concept. The Mixmag Store. It focuses on the well known brand Mixmag, and from this I developed and designed an experiential retail environment in which customers can interact with the store. The main audience is those who are music inspired and the concept is driven by nightclub setting and ambience. As well as developing a store design, I created a promotional book and press pack.
