είναι θέμα επιλογής… Κάθε χρόνο, με την είσοδο της άνοιξης, έρχονται στο μυαλό μου οι καλοκαιρινές διακοπές, όπου ένα μεγάλο μέρος τους επιλέγω ν' απολαμβάνω στη Μύκονο. Όσο και να την αποκαλούν το «νησί των ανέμων», που δεν σε αφήνει σε ησυχία όταν βρίσκεσαι στο γιαλό ή όταν θες να απολαύσεις τον ήλιο σε κάποια από τις αμμώδεις παραλίες της, έχει πολλές φανερές & κρυφές γοητείες που καλύπτουν όλα τα γούστα. Αν και αυτά τα γούστα αλλάζουν με τον καιρό στον καθένα μας. Όπως και σε μένα, θυμάμαι πως άλλες ήταν οι αναζητήσεις μου πριν λίγα χρόνια και άλλες τώρα… όμως παραμένω σταθερά να επιμένω την ίδια επιλογή για διακοπές, την Μύκονο. Κατηφορίζοντας από την Φάμπρικα προς τη Λάκκα, για να βρεθώ στον γιαλό με τις καφετέριες και τους πελεκάνους δεν επιλέγω τους κεντρικούς πολυσύχναστους δρόμους, αλλά μικρά στενά σοκάκια, ανάμεσα σε όμορφα μπαλκόνια με απλωμένα ρούχα, τις μπουκαβίλιες, περνάω κάτω από τις καμάρες παραδοσιακών σπιτιών για να απολαύσω για ακόμα μια φορά τη μοναδικότητα αυτή της Κυκλαδίτικης αρχιτεκτονικής που προσφέρει το νησί και μια ήσυχη διαδρομή παρέα με Μυκονιάτες και τις δεκάδες γάτες να ξεπροβάλουν από παντού. Πολλές φορές το κάνω αυτό για να ηρεμήσω ή για να αποτυπώσω μοναδικές εικόνες στο μυαλό αλλά και στην κάμερα, χωρίς να έχω χαράξει μια συγκεκριμένη πορεία. Οι φίλοι μου αναρωτιούνται «πως καταφέρνεις και βρίσκεις το δρόμο σου μέσα σε τόσο μικρά και μυστηριώδη σοκάκια;». Μα η Μύκονος δεν σε αφήνει ποτέ να χαθείς, όποιο σοκάκι κι αν επιλέξεις, είναι σίγουρο πως θα βρεις τον τελικό προορισμό σου και θα έχεις απολαύσει μια διαδρομή που θα σου μείνει αξέχαστη. Η Μύκονος λοιπόν, το πολυδιαφημιζόμενο αυτό νησί της Μεσογείου, δεν είναι μόνο υπέροχες παραλίες, νόστιμο φαγητό, πανάκριβες αγορές, σουβενίρ και διασκέδαση μέχρι το πρωί. Είναι επίσης μια διάχυτη ελευθερία έκφρασης που δεν την βρίσκεις πουθενά αλλού και ένας τρόπος διαφυγής για γαλήνιες κυκλαδίτικες διακοπές. Όλα είναι θέμα οπτικής, διαλέγεις την αιτία της επιλογής σου και απλά απολαμβάνεις το νησί. Καλό καλοκαίρι!

It’s a matter of choice ... Every year, spring arrival brings to my mind the summer holidays, that I choose to spend mostly in Mykonos. No matter they call it the “island of the Winds” that doesn't let you in peace when you are on the seaside or when you want to enjoy the sun at one of its sandy beaches, it’s full of obvious and hidden charm that satisfy all, regardless the fact that personal taste changes through the years. This happened to me as well, I remember that I was looking for different things back then and different things now... but I remain to support the very same choice for my holidays, Mykonos. Going down the hill from Fabrika sq. to Lakka, in order to reach the seaside with the cafeterias and the pelicans, I don't choose the main streets but the small narrow alleys. Walking through beautiful balconies with clothes hanging and bougainvilleas, I pass under the arches of the traditional houses so that I can enjoy once again the uniqueness of the Cycladic architecture of the island and a quiet walk together with Mykonians and tenths of cats that appear everywhere. I often do that so that I can relax and capture on my mind and on camera unique pictures, without having decided on a specific route. Friends often ask “how do you manage to find your way in all those narrow and mysterious alleys?”. But Mykonos never let you lose your way, whichever alley you choose, one thing is for sure, that you will find your final destination following an unforgettable route. Mykonos, this well-advertised island of the Mediterranean, is not only full of wonderful beaches, delicious food, expensive shopping, souvenirs and partying till morning. It’s also a broad liberal feeling that you don't find anywhere else and a way to escape though peaceful Cycladic holidays. Everything is a matter of perspective, you decide why you choose it and you simply enjoy the island. Have a great summer!

Η Olympic Air συνδέει την Αθήνα με Μύκονο, Μήλο, Νάξο, Πάρο, Σύρο και Σαντορίνη. Η Aegean Airlines πετά από Αθήνα και Θεσσαλονίκη για Μύκονο και Σαντορίνη. Τα νησιά των Κυκλάδων δεν συνδέονται μεταξύ τους αεροπορικώς. Οι ακτοπλοϊκές διαδρομές χωρίζουν τις Κυκλάδες στις δυτικές, βόρειες, κεντρικές και ανατολικές υποομάδες νησιών. Οι κεντρικές Κυκλάδες (Πάρος, Νάξος, Ίος & Σαντορίνη) έχουν τις καλύτερες συνδέσεις με την ηπειρωτική χώρα, συνήθως με τον Πειραιά. Οι βόρειες Κυκλάδες (Άνδρος, Τήνος, Σύρος και Μύκονος) επίσης έχουν καλές συνδέσεις. Οι δυτικές Κυκλάδες (Κέα, Κύθνος, Μήλος, Σέριφος, Σίφνος, Φολέγανδρος και Σίκινος) έχουν λιγότερο συχνές συνδέσεις με την ηπειρωτική χώρα. Οι ανατολικές Κυκλάδες (Ανάφη, Αμοργός, Ηράκλεια, Σχοινούσα, Κουφονήσια και Δονούσα) έχουν τις πιο αραιές συνδέσεις. Επίσης, υπάρχει δρομολόγια από το Ηράκλειο Κρήτης για Θήρα - Ίο - Πάρο - Μύκονο. Αν και μπορούν να ταξιδέψουν ταχύτερα, παίρνουν συχνά περισσότερο χρόνο για να φτάσουν στον προορισμό τους, λόγω των πολλών στάσεων που κάνουν και της ευαισθησίας που έχουν στις κακές καιρικές συνθήκες. Επίσης, τα Super Jet καλύπτουν Μήλο - Φολέγανδρο - Σύρο - Σαντορίνη - Κουφονήσι – Αμοργό και από Ραφήνα για Τήνο - Μύκονο Πάρο. Επιπλέον, υπάρχουν δρομολόγια από Ηράκλειο για Σαντορίνη - Ίο - Πάρο - Νάξο Μύκονο, Σαντορίνη - Φολέγανδρο - Αμοργό Κουφονήσια - Νάξο - Μύκονο. Τα συμβατικά πλοία καλύπτουν τα ίδια δρομολόγια με τη διαφορά ότι προσεγγίζουν και Αμοργό, Ηράκλεια, Σχοινούσα, Δονούσα καθώς και Ανάφη, Σίκινο, Κύθνο, Κίμωλο και Κέα. Υπάρχουν σχετικά καλές ακτοπλοϊκές συνδέσεις ανάμεσα σε κάθε μια από τις δυτικές, βόρειες, κεντρικές και ανατολικές Κυκλάδες αλλά και σπάνιες συνδέσεις μεταξύ των διαφορετικών υποομάδων των Κυκλάδων. Olympic Air connects Athens with Mykonos, Milos, Naxos, Paros, Syros & Santorini. Aegean Airlines flies from Athens and Thessaloniki to Mykonos and Santorini. At the moment, there are no inter-island connections. The ferry routes tend to separate the Cyclades into western, northern, central and eastern subgroups. The central Cyclades (Paros, Naxos, Ios & Santorini) are the most visited and have the best links with the mainland, usually Piraeus. The northern Cyclades (Andros, Tinos, Syros and Mykonos) also have good connections. The western Cyclades (Kea, Kythnos, Milos, Serifos, Sifnos, Folegandros and Sikinos) have less frequent connections with the mainland and eastern Cyclades (Anafi, Amorgos, Iraklia, Shinousa, Koufonisia and Donoysa) have the fewest links. In the summer, there are daily hydrofoils from Piraeus to Syros - Tinos - Mykonos, Paros Naxos - Ios - Santorini, Serifos - Sifnos - Milos and from Rafina port to Andros - Tinos Mykonos - Naxos. There are also, hydrofoils from Iraklio (Crete) to Santorini - Ios - Paros Naxos - Mykonos, Santorini - Folegandros Amorgos - Koufonisia - Naxos - Mykonos. Although Hydrofoils can travel faster than ferries, they often take longer to reach their destination because of the frequent stops and their susceptibility to adverse weather conditions. Furthermore, there are Super Jet schedules for Milos - Folegandros - Syros - Santorini Koufonisia - Amorgos and from Rafina port to Tinos - Mykonos - Paros. There are also connections from Iraklio (Crete) with Santorini Ios - Paros - Naxos - Mykonos and Santorini Folegandros - Amorgos - Koufonisia - Naxos Mykonos. The conventional ferries cover the same routes as well as Amorgos, Iraklia, Shinousa, Donousa and Anafi, Sikinos, Kythnos, Kimolos, Kea. There are relatively good ferry connections within each of the western, northern, central and eastern subgroups but infrequent connections betweenthedifferentsubgroups. MG

Δήλος είναι σίγουρα ένα πολύ διαφορετικό νησί. Ακόμα και αν τα μουσεία και τα αρχαία δεν είναι του γούστου σας νομίζω πω η Δήλος θα σας εντυπωσιάσει. Είναι σαν να λέμε ολόκληρη ένα υπαίθριο μουσείο, ένα νησί με μια τεράστια ιστορία και ένας παράδεισος για τους αρχαιολόγους. Αν ήταν να την συγκρίνουμε με άλλους αρχαιολογικούς χώρους τότε σίγουρα θα της άξιζε μια θέση δίπλα στην Κνωσό και την Ακρόπολη, δεν υπάρχει αμφιβολία γι' αυτό.

ΜΥΘΟΛΟΓΙΑ Αρχικά το νησί λεγόταν Ορτυγία και λέγεται πως εκεί κατέφυγε η Λητώ για να γεννήσει τον Απόλλωνα και την Άρτεμη για ν' αποφύγει την οργή της θεάς Ήρας που είχε μάθει πως ο Δίας ήταν ο πατέρας. Ο Δίας παρακολούθησε από το όρος Κύνθος του νησιού τη γέννηση του Απόλλωνα που από τότε έμενε εκεί τους τέσσερις μήνες του χειμώνα ενώ τους υπόλοιπους στους Δελφούς. Σύμφωνα με την μυθολογία υπάρχουν δύο εκδοχές για την γέννηση της Άρτεμης, η πρώτη εκδοχή στηρίζει πως γεννήθηκε πριν τον Απόλλωνα και μετά βοήθησε την μητέρα της στη γέννα του και η δεύτερη πως γεννήθηκε στην Ορτυγία, στη γειτονική δηλαδή Ρήνεια. Στο νησί αναφέρεται πως σταμάτησε και ο Θησέας επιστρέφοντας με τους νέους και τις νέες από την Κρήτη, αφού εξουδετέρωσε το μινώταυρο ενώ με γιορτές και χορούς γύρω από τον βωμό του τίμησαν και τον θεό Απόλλωνα. ΙΣΤΟΡΙΑ Από αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα έχει ανακαλυφθεί πως η Δήλος είχε κατοικηθεί προϊστορικά, γύρω στο 3000 π. Χ., ενώ βρέθηκαν σε

Όταν γύρω στο 1000 π.Χ. εγκαταστάθηκαν στο νησί Ίωνες η Δήλος έγινε σημαντικό πολιτικό και θρησκευτικό κέντρο για τα νησιά του Αιγαίου, υπό την προστασία της Νάξου. Κάθε τέσσερα χρόνια διαδραματίζονταν εκεί τα Δήλια, μια πολύ σημαντική γιορτή που γινόταν προς τιμή του Απόλλωνα, της Άρτεμης και της Λητώς και περιλάμβαναν θυσίες, χορούς και μουσικούς αγώνες. Η Δήλος γνώρισε μεγάλη άνθηση στα τέλη του 4ου αι. π.Χ. και μέχρι το 168 π.Χ. οπότε ήταν ανεξάρτητη και κέντρο του Κοινού των Νησιωτών. Κατά την περίοδο αυτή, της λεγόμενης Δηλιακής Ανεξαρτησίας, το νησί γέμισε μεγαλοπρεπή οικοδομήματα και πλούσια αφιερώματα αλλά αργότερα γνώρισε τόσες καταστροφές από διάφορες επιδρομές που διακόπηκε η ακμή του. Στα τέλη του 2ου αι. μ.Χ. στο νησί έχει απομείνει μόνο ένας μικρός οικισμός που τελικά εγκαταλείπεται κι αυτός τον 6ο αι. μ.Χ. Από τότε η Δήλος γίνεται στέκι πειρατών και κουρσάρων, χώρος εξεύρεσης πρόχειρου οικοδομικού υλικού και εύκολη λεία για τους αρχαιοκάπηλους. Οι πρώτες επίσημες ανασκαφές της Γαλλικής Αρχαιολογικής Σχολής που ανέλαβε την ευθύνη να διευκρινίσει τη σπουδαιότητα των ερειπίων άρχισαν το 1877. MG

elos is certainly a very different island. even if antiquities and museums are not your cup of tea, I think Delos will impress you. It is like a big external museum, an island with a huge history and a paradise for archaeologists. If we were to compare it with other archaeological sites we would certainly offer Delos a position by the Acropolis and Knossos, no doubt about that. MYTHOLOGY At first the island was called Ortygia and it is said that Leto hid there in order to give birth to Apollo and Artemis and avoid the rage of goddess Hera who had found out that the father of the two children was her husband, Zeus. Zeus watched the birth of Apollo from Mount Kynthos. From then on, Apollo resided the island for four months while the rest of the time he was in Delphi. According to mythology there are two versions for the birth of Artemis, the first one states that she was born first and then she helped her mother give birth to her brother and the second says that she was born in Ortygia, meaning the nearby Rineia. It is also

mentioned in mythology that Theseus stopped by Delos with the young men and women from Crete after he had killed the Minotaur. All of them honored god Apollo with celebrations and dances around his altar. HISTORY From the archaeological findings it has been discovered that Delos was inhabited prehistorically, around 3000 BC, while remnants of the Minoan and Mycenaean periods were also found. When around 1000 BC the Ionians were installed on the island Delos became an important political and religious center for the islands of the Aegean, under the protection of Naxos. Every four years Delia, a very important celebration made to the honor of Apollo, Artemis and Leto was taking place on the island including sacrifices, dances and music contests. Delos has known great development towards the end of the 4th century BC and till 168 BC when it was very independent and a very important figure among the other islands. During this period of time, the time of Delian Independence, the island was full of impressive

buildings and offerings to the gods but later on it suffered so many destructions that it just stopped blooming. In the end of the 2nd century AD only a small settlement has remained on the island which was also abandoned during the 6th century AD. Then, Delos is becoming the hideaway of pirates and thieves of the seas, a location approached by people with the purpose of finding construction materials and an easy prey for thieves of antiquities. The first formal excavations of the Freench Archaeological School that undertook the responsibility to define the importance of these ruins, started in 1877. ΑΝΕΜΟΜΥΛΟΙ ...τα πλοία της ξηράς Αποτελούν εδώ και πολλά χρόνια σήμα κατατεθέν της Μυκόνου, στέκουν σ' ένα ύψωμα, στη συνοικία του Κάστρου στη Χώρα του νησιού και πρόκειται για επτά τριώροφα οικοδομήματα κυλινδρικού σχήματος, με μικρά παράθυρα και κωνική ξύλινη οροφή. Από τον 17ο έως και το 19ο αιώνα αποτελούσαν την κύρια πηγή εσόδων της Μυκόνου, εξυπηρετώντας όχι μόνο τις ανάγκες του νησιού, αλλά και των διερχόμενων πλοίων και των γύρω νησιών. Ας εισχωρήσουμε όμως αναλυτικότερα στην ιστορία τους…

Οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες τα προϊστορικά χρόνια έτρωγαν ένα είδος ψωμιού από σιτηρά που άλεθαν με δυο πλάκες. Θα ονομαστούν «μυλόπετρες» από τον βασιλιά Μύλο, εγγονό ή γιο του Λέλεγα πρώτου βασιλιά της Λακωνίας, που εφεύρε την πρώτη μορφή χειροκίνητου μύλου. Το πέτρινο χειρόμυλο ή το ξύλινο γουδί ήταν φορητοί μύλοι, υπήρχαν και σταθεροί μύλοι στα ισόγεια δωμάτια δίπλα στις αποθήκες τροφίμων. Μεγαλύτεροι μύλοι λειτουργούν με ομάδες ανθρώπων και λέγονται ανθρωπό-μυλοι. Κατά το τέλος της αρχαίας περιόδου εμφανίζονται οι ζωόμυλοι. Στην Αρχαία Ελλάδα αναφέρονται περίπου 78 τύποι ψωμιού! Το ψωμί κατείχε σημαντικό ρόλο στα έθιμα και τις γιορτές του χρόνου και του κύκλου της ζωής. Για του λόγου το αληθές, οι Έλληνες πρόσφεραν άρτους στους θεούς, τους λεγόμενους “θειαγόνους”. Στο ναό της Δήμητρας στην Ελευσίνα και μέχρι την σημερινή τους θρησκεία οι Έλληνες τιμούν με τον άρτο τον επιούσιο. Προστάτης θεός των μυλωνάδων είναι ο Μυλέας Δίας . Κατά τα χρόνια του Βυζάντιου εμφανίζονται οι συντεχνίες νερόμυλων. Μετά το 1200 μΧ θα κυριαρχήσει στα νησιά η κατασκευή των ανεμόμυλων που χρησιμοποιούν την αιολική ενέργεια. They have been the landmark of Mykonos since many years. They stand on a hill, in the Castle district inside the Chora of the island as sevenstorey buildings in cylindrical shape, with small windows and conical wooden roofs. From the 17th to the 19th century, windmills were the main source of income for Mykonos, serving not only the needs of the island, but also of the passing ships and the surrounding islands. But let us go deeper to their history, the way folklorist, writer and artist Marina Petri writes it exclusively for our magazine...

Ancient Greeks, in prehistoric times, used to eat a kind of bread, made of cereals that were grind between two rock plates. They would be named “millopetres” after king Milos, grandson or son of Lelegas, first king of Lakonia, who invented the first form of hand mill. Wooden handmills or wooden pestles were portable mills but there were also stable mills, inside the ground floor rooms, next to the food storages. Bigger mills were working with groups of people and were called “anthropomilli” (menmills). During the end of the ancient era, animal-mills appeared. In ancient Greece are mentioned

approximately 78 types of bread! Bread was playing an important role in the annual customs and celebrations and the circle of life. This is proven by the fact that Greeks were offering to gods a special kind of bread, the so-called “theagonous”. Greeks praise their gods at Dimitras Sanctuary in Elefsina even until their present religion by offering the bread of their food. God-protector of the millers was “Zeus Milleas”. During Byzantine times, the watermills guilds appeared. Following 1200 a. C, the construction of windmills that use wind power, would prevail on the islands. In Mykonos, those buildings would follow the disarming, minimal, Mediterranean pattern. The antennas with the sails always turn with the same direction of the wind and so, windmills were named “ships of the land”. It is characteristic that there are only four openings: the door with a small opening for the cat to enter and chase

ακολουθήσουν της αφοπλιστική απέριττη μεσογειακή αρχιτεκτονική, οι αντένες με τα πανιά που θα γυρίζουν πάντα στη φορά του ανέμου, θα τους ονομάσουν «πλοία της ξηράς». Χαρακτηριστικό τους τα τέσσερα και μόνο ανοίγματα, η πόρτα με ένα μικρό άνοιγμα για να μπαίνει η γάτα για τα ποντίκια, τα δυο αντικριστά παράθυρα του λεβάντε ανατολικού ανέμου και του πουνέντε ανέμου στη Δύση, τέλος η τούρλα, η κυκλικά κινούμενη στέγη, που καλύπτεται από πυκνά δεμένες στρώσεις ξερών βούρλων. Οι μυλωνάδες δεν θα είναι κατ' ανάγκη οι ιδιοκτήτες των μύλων αλλά μάλλον ενοικιαστές ή χειριστές τους, οι μύλοι ανήκουν σε εύπορους ντόπιους. Κατά το 1800 μ.χ αναφέρεται ότι ήταν περίπου 30, οι περισσότεροι στα ψηλά σημεία, δεξιά και αριστερά και πάνω από την πόλη, στην Άνω Μερά και στον Εμπουρδέκτη. Οι μυλωνάδες γίνονται από τη γεωγραφική θέση των Μύλων, οι μετεωρολόγοι του τόπου και τοποτηρητές αφού από ψηλά έβλεπαν πρώτοι στο πέλαγο τα εχθρικά πλοία που ερχόταν και ειδοποιούσαν έγκαιρα για άμυνα Μύκονος παρήγαγε κυρίως σιτάρι καλό για μπύρα! Χτίστηκαν 30 περίπου μύλοι μιας και φυσούσαν άνεμοι πάνω από 200 μέρες το χρόνο. Στους Μύλους έφερναν επίσης δημητριακά από άλλα μέρη της μεσόγειου για να μεταποιηθούν σε αλεύρι, πληρώνοντας τα αλεστικά και να συνεχίσουν το ταξίδι τους για τον τελικό προορισμό πώλησης και ήταν ένα το σημαντικότερο έσοδο του τόπου. Με τα αλέσματά οι φούρνοι του τόπου τους και με την χρήση του πετρώματος διπυρίτη, έφτιαχναν μοναδικά παξιμάδια και το διπύριτιο άρτο που ψηνόταν που πούλαγαν για τροφοδοσία μαζί με τοπικό κρασί στα καράβια που ελλιμενίζονταν στη Μύκονο. Για τους θρύλους, τη μεγάλη τους ιστορία, ορθώνουν δίκαια τα φαλλικά σώματα αυτές οι ακροπόλεις του νησιού. Ο τελευταίος μύλος πάνω από την Αλευκάντρα «ο μύλος του Γερώνυμου του Ζουγανέλη» έκλεισε για πάντα τα πανιά το 1978.

Εκεί ο λαός συνευρίσκεται, πατά τα σταφύλια στο πατητήρι, τρώει, πίνει, τραγουδά, χορεύει, ενώνοντας τα δυο βασικά θεμέλια του ιερού τρίπτυχου, του διατροφικού συστήματος του αρχαίου και σύγχρονου ελληνικού πολιτισμού, κρασί, ψωμί και λάδι... Millers were not necessarily the mills owners but were rather their renters or operators. Mills were usually owned by wealthy locals. In 1800's, it is mentioned that there were more or less 30 windmills in Mykonos, most of them at the higher points of the island, on the right and on the left and over the town, at Ano Mera and Empourdekti. Millers became, from the geographic position of Mylli, the meteorologists and deputies, since they were the first to see the hostile ships coming towards the island and they were immediately calling for defense. Mykonos was mainly producing wheat suitable for beer! They were built approximately 30 mills because there were winds blowing for more than 200 days a year. At Milli, were also bringing cereals from other places in the Mediterranean, to turn them into flour by paying thr fee and then they were continuing their trip to their final selling destination. That was an important income for the island. With the fees and by using the stone dipirites, the bakers were making a unique kind of crisp bread and “dipirites bread” that was baked and sold for catering together with local wine to the ships that were docked in Mykonos. For their legends and their great history, they keep their phallic bodies standing as the citadels of the island. The last mill over Alefkantra, “Geronimo Zouganelis' mill” closed its winds forever in 1978. I can still recall the flour's smell, the harshness of the antennas, the bags with the wheat and the grind flour. A few years later, one of the brightest men in Mykonos, Vassilis Kyriazopoulos, the creator of the folkloric museum, would buy Mponis' mill from the other side of town, and add from the inner side of the skarpa (the small stone fence) a threshing floor, an oven and a wine press and would name it Agricultural museum of Mykonos. He would also create the yearly event “the feast of harvest”, taking place every September, where people get together, press the grapes in a wine press, and while eating, drinkin, singing, dancing, are uniting the two main foundations of the holy triptych of the nutritional system of ancient and modern Greek culture, winebread and oil ... μύθος της χαμένης Ατλαντίδας αφορά την εξαφάνισης μιας πολύ προηγμένης ηπείρου και η πρώτη αναφορά σε αυτήν τοποθετείται γύρω στο 355 π. Χ. όταν ο Πλάτωνας, ο γνωστός Έλληνας φιλόσοφος την ανέφερε στο πρώτο βιβλίο μια τριλογίας που δεν έμελλε ποτέ να ολοκληρωθεί. Κατά τα γραπτά του λοιπόν η Ατλαντίδα αποτελεί τα χρόνια εκείνα ένα θαύμα πολιτισμού και αρχιτεκτονικής και αποτελείται από μια σειρά ομόκεντρων κύκλων και καναλιών, ενώ στο κέντρο της βρίσκεται ένας λόφος που στην κορυφή του υπάρχει ένας ναός του Ποσειδώνα. Στο εσωτερικό του ναού δεσπόζει ένα χρυσό άγαλμα του θεού της θάλασσας που φαίνεται να οδηγεί έξι φτερωτά άλογα. Ανάμεσα στα άλλα, ο Πλάτωνας αναφέρει πως όταν οι άνθρωποι της Ατλαντίδας έγιναν άπληστοι και διεφθαρμένοι οι θεοί αποφάσισαν να τους αφανίσουν και γι' αυτό προκάλεσαν έναν σεισμό που είχε ως αποτέλεσμα τεράστια κύματα να καλύψουν την Ατλαντίδα που χάθηκε για πάντα. Με την πρώτη ματιά φαίνεται πως ο Πλάτωνας απλά δημιούργησε μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία, από την άλλη όμως στους διαλόγους που χρησιμοποιεί στο έργο του αναφέρεται πως η ιστορία αυτή είναι αληθινή και γι' αυτό άλλωστε υπάρχουν και τόσες λεπτομέρειες για την Ατλαντίδα, ενώ λογοτεχνικά κάτι τέτοιο δεν θα ήταν απαραίτητο. Ακόμα να σας εξάψω την φαντασία; Αν η Ατλαντίδα ήταν όντως πραγματική φαίνεται πως κατά τον Πλάτωνα βρισκόταν στο στενό του Γιβραλτάρ. Κατά καιρούς έχει αναφερθεί πως βρισκόταν σε διάφορα σημεία του κόσμου όπως η Ελβετία, η Νέα Ζηλανδία και η Βραζιλία αλλά η άποψη που έχει επικρατήσει ως πιο λογική είναι αυτή του καθηγητή Φροστ που λέει πως ήταν ανατολικά των πυλώνων του Ηρακλή και πως αν όντως η καταστροφή αυτή είναι πραγματική, έγινε 900 χρόνια πριν τα χρόνια του Πλάτωνα και όχι 9000 όπως πολλοί υποστηρίζουν. Αν αυτά τα γεγονότα όντως ισχύουν, η Ατλαντίδα θα ήταν ένα πολύ ξακουστό μέρος ακόμα και στον καιρό του Πλάτωνα, η Κρήτη! Και εδώ είναι που μπαίνει στο προσκήνιο η Σαντορίνη. Η Κρήτη εκείνο τον καιρό ήταν όπως όλοι γνωρίζουμε μια τεράστια Μινωική αυτοκρατορία που όμως χάθηκε σε ανύποπτο χρόνο εξαιτίας κυρίως της έκρηξης του ηφαιστείου της Σαντορίνης και έτσι έκανε και την εμφάνισή του ο μύθος της χαμένης Ατλαντίδας. Άλλωστε οι άνθρωποι των Μινωικών ανακτόρων είχαν πολλά κοινά με αυτούς της Ατλαντίδας όπως για παράδειγμα διάφορες τελετουργίες, αγώνες με ταύρους, ακόμα και το πολιτικό κύρος που αποδιδόταν στις γυναίκες της εποχής.

Το Ηφαίστειο Κατά τη διάρκεια του καλοκαιριού αλλά και τον χειμώνα όταν ο καιρός το επιτρέπει θα δείτε πολλά καραβάκια να φεύγουν από τον Αθηνιό, το λιμάνι της Σαντορίνης, ή ακόμα και από το παλιό λιμάνι με προορισμό το διάσημο ηφαίστειο του νησιού. Τα ταξιδιωτικά γραφεία διοργανώνουν τέτοιες διαδρομές καθημερινά για τους τουρίστες και τα μίνι αυτά ταξιδάκια περιλαμβάνουν επίσκεψη στην παλαιά και νέα καμένη, τα δύο νησάκια που δημιουργήθηκαν με την έκρηξη του ηφαιστείου, περιήγηση στον κρατήρα και την γύρω περιοχή, κολύμπι στις θερμές πηγές, στάση στην Θηρασιά, ηλιοβασίλεμα και επιστροφή. Για να λέω και την αλήθεια, η περιήγηση στο ηφαίστειο είναι λίγο κουραστική μέσα στο κατακαλόκαιρο μιας και έχει αρκετή ανηφορική πεζοπορία ως τον κρατήρα, ζέστη και γενικά πολύ κακό για το τίποτα αλλά πολλοί δείχνουν να το διασκεδάζουν. Εντάξει, δεν είναι και κάθε μέρα που βλέπεις ατμούς να βγαίνουν από το έδαφος όπως εκεί, ειδικά αν αναλογιστείς το μέγεθος της καταστροφής που έχει συντελεστεί στο παρελθόν εξαιτίας του ηφαιστείου. Μετά την πεζοπορία μέσα στη ζέστη το μπάνιο στις θερμές πηγές μοιάζει σαν όνειρο. Τα νερά έχουν μια παράξενη πορτοκαλιά απόχρωση και μια περίεργη μυρωδιά από το θειάφι που βρίσκεται σε υψηλή περιεκτικότητα μέσα στο νερό. Λέγεται δε πως η λάσπη της πηγής είναι θεραπευτική γι' αυτό μην σας φανεί παράξενο πηγαίνοντας αν δείτε ανθρώπους να αλείφονται παντού με αυτήν. Για την ιστορία ας αναφέρουμε πως η έκρηξη του ηφαιστείου έγινε 3600 χρόνια πριν και η Σαντορίνη, η Θηρασιά και το Ασπρονήσι δημιουργήθηκαν εξαιτίας της έκρηξης όπως επίσης και η διάσημη σήμερα καλντέρα. Κατά τη διάρκεια των χρόνων έγιναν και άλλες πολλές εκρήξεις αλλά η τελευταία που αναφέρεται έγινε τον Ιανουάριο του 1950. Γέμισε ο τόπος από τις στάχτες που διασκορπίστηκαν στον αέρα και έφτασαν ως και 1000 μέτρα ύψος για να καλύψουν τελικά τα πάντα. Εξαιτίας της στάχτης αυτής οι τοιχογραφίες που βρίσκονται στον αρχαιολογικό χώρο του Ακρωτηρίου διατηρήθηκαν σχεδόν ανέπαφες. Η λάβα ξεχύθηκε σε ακτίνα 850 μέτρων και οι εκρήξεις σταμάτησαν στις 2 Φεβρουαρίου του ίδιου έτους. Από το 1950 το ηφαίστειο κοιμάται και μόνο οι θερμές πηγές και ο ατμός που βγαίνει από τον κρατήρα είναι εκεί για να μαρτυρούν τι έγινε στο παρελθόν. Οι αρχές της Σαντορίνης διαβεβαιώνουν πως έχουν ληφθεί όλα τα απαραίτητα μέτρα σε περίπτωση που γίνει πάλι κάποια έκρηξη έτσι ώστε να μην κινδυνεύσει κανείς. MG

The legend of Atlantis the lost continent! Even the sound of the phrase “The Lost Atlantis” fills the air with mystery. It is not by chance that books, movies and television shows have been dedicated to this issue for years. But let's start from the beginning… The legend of the Lost Atlantis concerns the disappearance of a very advanced continent which was mentioned for the first time around 355 BC when Plato, the Greek philosopher wrote about it in the first book of a trilogy that was never meant to be completed. According to his writings the Atlantis was a miracle of civilization and architecture of the time and it was formed by a series of concentric circles and channels while a hill with a temple of Poseidon on top was found in its centre. Inside the temple there was a golden statue of the god of the sea leading six winged horses. Among other things mentioned, Plato writes that when the people of the Atlantis became greedy and corrupted the gods decided to wipe them out the face of the earth so they provoked an earthquake which caused many waves to cover the Atlantis which was lost forever. At first sight it seems that this story was just a fictional tale created by Plato but the dialogues of the book often mention that this story is true and that's why there are so many details for the Atlantis although something like that wasn't necessary as far as literature was concerned. Your imagination isn't aroused yet? According to Plato if the Atlantis was indeed real it would be situated in the strait of Gibraltar. Many possible spots have been mentioned from time to time such as Switzerland, New Zealand and Brazil but the option most logical seems to be the one of professor Frost who says that the Atlantis is situated to the east of the pillars of Hercules and that if the destruction did take place this would have happened 900 years before Plato's time and not 9000 as many people state. If these elements are indeed true then the Atlantis was a famous place even in Plato's time, Crete! Here is where Santorini fits the puzzle. As we all know Crete was a

huge empire, at the time, which was lost abruptly because of the volcanic eruption, giving rise to the rumours about the lost Atlantis. The Minoans had many things in common with the habitants of the Atlantis such as rituals, bullfighting and even the political status given to the women of the time so a comparison between the two is only natural.

The Volcano During the summer and even in winter when the weather allows it, you will see many small boats leaving from Athinios port or the Old Port of Santorini going towards the famous volcano. The travel agencies of the island offer such tours on a daily basis and these mini trips include a visit to the small islets of Palaia and Nea Kameni, a tour to the crater and the surrounding area of the volcano, swimming in the hot springs, a short stop to the island of Thirasia, sunset watching and return to Athinios port. To tell you the truth the tour to the volcano is a bit tiring especially during the summer time since there is quite some hiking involved to reach the crater, too much heat and more to expect than to see, but most of the people visiting it seem to have fun. Alright, it's not an everyday phenomenon to see steam coming out of the ground, especially if you come to think of the size of the damage caused in the past because of the volcano. After hiking in the heat swimming in the hot springs seems like a dream. The waters have a strange shade of orange and smell because of the sulphur contained in them. It is said that the mud of the spring is therapeutic so don't be surprised if you see people spreading it all over their bodies. For the sake of history we should mention that the first explosion of the volcano took place 3600 years ago and Santorini, Thirasia and Aspronisi were created because of the explosion along with the famous caldera. During the years many explosions took their turn but the last is recorded in January 1950. The ashes were scattered everywhere reaching a height of 1000 meters to cover everything in the end. Because of this ash the murals of the archaeological site of Akrotiri were kept almost intact. The lava spread up to 850 meters and the explosions finally stopped in February 2nd. Since 1950 the volcano is asleep and only the thermal springs and the steam coming out of the ground are here to remind us what has happened in the past. The Santorinian authorities ensure us that all the necessary measures have been adopted in case an exposion occurs again so that there is no danger for anybody. MG
