Nature in its purest form – Earth, Water, Fire, and Air were the four elements that inspired and brought the Antony Morato Autumn Winter collection to life. The use of black is inspired by the contrast between Earth and Man. A contrast which becomes the heart of a metropolitan design, which combines military style with glamorous touches, fur inserts and embroidery with woollen threads. Jackets in damask fabrics with satin reverse reinterpret the informal jacket. Shades of the North Sea water, blues and greys that imitate cold and humid conditions. Minimal details and contrasting inserts enrich a style based on rigorous cuts, where the immaterial graphics come through the overlapping of urban and natural elements, like metropolitan scenes, sectioned minerals and the braiding of branches. Antony Morato stores are located in Mall of Africa and Sandton City. Find them on Facebook and Instagram @antonymoratosa. Jacket: R4 590

We have seen the dream in many sci-fi series and movies and we have read about what would be the ultimate breakthrough in preserving human consciousness: by uploading it to a computer. A new startup called Nectome wants to make this a reality for people who are alive today even though the technology has not been invented yet. Their premise is to preserve brains in microscopic detail using what MIT Review describes as a “high-tech embalming process”. This involves a process called vitrifixation, also known as aldehyde-stabilised cryopreservation. The team behind the project won the Brain Preservation Prize (which is totally a real thing) for preserving a complete rabbit connectome, a complete map of all the neural connections in the brain. This process has also been carried out on larger brains, including the first human brain this past February.

EMBALM YOUR BRAIN FOR FUTURE IMMORTALITY

So how does it work? Basically, you can pay Nectome to carry out its brain embalming process after your death which requires a deposit of $10 000. It is refundable, if you have a change of mind before your death. They cannot guarantee immortality, but their website does suggest that mind uploading is the ultimate goal if the technology is ever perfected. “Our mission is to preserve your brain well enough to keep all its memories intact: from that great chapter of your favorite book to the feeling of cold winter air, baking an apple pie, or having dinner with your friends and family,” the company writes. “We believe that within the current century it will be feasible to digitise this information and use it to recreate your consciousness.” So far they have received over $2 million in funding. www.nectome.com

Imagine you’re at a concert, or in a crowd and want to find your friends. Or you need to give someone your precise address for a delivery. Or you are in a foreign country and need to find your way. You can do all that with just three words. This handy geocoding system has divided the globe in 57 trillion 3x3 meter squares and the unique three-word address makes it so much handier than GPS coordinates and much easier to remember. What3Words is used by corporations from Mercedes, to Mongol Post and will also be used for drone deliveries. The best thing is that the app works even when you don’t have a data connection and it is available for free download. Whilst you can’t yet type a 3 word address straight into Google Maps, you can find a 3 word address in the what3words app and then import that destination straight into Google Maps to get directions. Keep an eye on this innovation because it will be everywhere soon! www.what3words.com
