Adal Ballesteros appeared on Televisa’s La Voz Mexico Sept 14, 2014. Born in Hermosillo and living in Guadalajara, Adal visits Puerto Vallarta often saying “it’s the best place in Mexico to relax... the green jungle, the lush mountains and the beach are all here to enjoy. It’s a unique place in Mexico to find all these things in one place.”

Adal Ballesteros: Guadalajara Contestant On La Voz Mexico
Adal, 27, was chosen among 4,000 contestants from the Guadalajara casting on April 26, 2014. A series of filtering competitions began with Adal performing “We Will Rock You” one of his favorite songs from his favorite genre of music, 70’s and 80’s American rock and roll. Progressing to the second filter he performed “Sex on Fire” by Kings of Leon, another American rock bank. When the judges came back and requested something in Spanish, he began to feel that it was going to happen. Three weeks later a phone call from the producer of La Voz informing him of his chance to appear on Televisa’s La Voz Mexico. He was given his song to perform “Me Voy a Tomar La Noche” by Los Claxons and three weeks to prepare.
He plans to take voice lessons and practice performing. “That has been the life experience sparked from this amazing beginning. Voice lessons and practicing performance routines to move to the next level.” The best of luck Adal...you could be the next best voice in Mexico!
With his parents and voice coach Julion, Adal went before judges Ricky Martin, Yuri, Laura Pausini, and Julio Alvarez to do a very good performance. While never having been on-stage before this audition, friends and family were very happy he had made it that far.

También estamos encantados de presentar tu nuevo single Take It All The Way que co-escribió y produjo Todd Terry contigo. Cuéntanos acerca de tu infancia y cómo has dado forma a tu exitosa carrera.

Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board announces LGBT marketing campaign The Puerto Vallarta Tourism board has a new director Rolando Miravete and is actively focusing on the LGBT market. The LGBT campaign actually began in 2010 when Puerto Vallarta became the first Mexican destination to join IGLTA, the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association. Last year’s media coverage on Vallarta Pride 2013 specifically generated an estimated $234,858.75 in tourism revenue. Latitude, the official Press Agency, reports that 11% of LATITUDE promotions in 2013 directly targeted the LGBT market. The Tourism Board directed 18% of their initiatives toward the LGBT market. Budgets are different each year, depending on the activities and amount of promotions available. The Tourism Board is promoting to the LGBT market by sponsoring LGBT Events, LGBT Press Trips and Vallarta Gay Pride. In 2013, The Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board sponsored the GLAAD Awards for the past 4 years; the Harvey Milk High School for 3 years in a row (this year we helped raise $27,000 for LGBT youth) Gay Men’s Health Crisis 3 years in a row; and the Original LGBT Expo in NY for 3 years. 46

They try to bring a LGBT journalist on every press trip. In 2013, Puerto Vallarta pitched, confirmed and obtained sponsorship for Out Magazine to cover Puerto Vallarta in its 2013 travel issue. The Tourism Board instructed Latitude, the official press agency to promote Vallarta Pride via press releases that were sent out to over 2,000 media outlets in the USA and Canada announcing Vallarta Gay Pride Weekend. Latititude also releases information the many gay offerings of Puerto Vallarta gay outlets such as Xtra!, Passport magazine and Out Magazine as well as sponsorship of the gay events. The Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board is currently working on a commitment to have Puerto Vallarta be the destination sponsor of major US campaign for the remainder of 2014 and 2015. They are also be working with gay tour operators, meeting planners and travel agents to increase awareness of Puerto Vallarta to the gay traveler worldwide.

Mexico Supreme Court Issues Protocol Guaranteeing LGBT Rights The Mexican Supreme Court (SCJ) August 18, 2014 issued a landmark protocol to guarantee the rights of the LGBT community and their access to justice in Mexico.
The “Protocolo de Actuación” released by Chief Justice Ministro Presidente Juan N Silva Meza is expected to be a guide for judges and all those who administer justice in cases involving sexual orientation or gender identity. A further historic statement indicates that physical appearance, sexual preferences and public display of affections are protected by the Constitution, and therefore the judges are required to resolve cases concerning the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people based on a gender and sexual diversity perspective. The presentation ceremony was attended by the SCJ’s ministers Olga Sanchez Cordero, Jorge Pardo, Arturo Zaldivar, Luis Maria Aguilar, Alberto Perez Gelacio and Fernando Franco, and by LGBT representatives and the president of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (ICHR), Tracy Robinson who helped to collaborate the document. This historical statement from the Mexican Supreme Court is one of the most important steps in contributing to the transformation and guarantee of justice and equal rights for the LGBT community in Mexico. 48

Colleges Courting Gay Students
Colleges campuses are going after the LGBT market specifically looking for the gay college student. The 2013 Pew Research Study finds that most gay students are coming out at age 20, right in the middle of college spring break. Furthermore, nationwide college enrollment is level and in some cases declining. This has forced colleges to actively recruit the gay student. A positive, supportive college environment is vital to attracting and maintaining students who are finding out their sexuality and coming out. Many colleges are developing LGBT student centers, college fairs for gay applicants, special LGBT graduation ceremonies, and special housing and medical care for transgendered students. Nationwide there are about 200 LGBT student centers on college campuses. Some important statistics are discovered as information on applications are gathered. A higher percentage of incoming LGBT students are non white (50%) as compared to 33% of incoming LGBT students being white. The Campus Pride Index rates colleges based on LGBT policies, programs and practices and is conducted “for and by” LGBT experts in the field of higher education. Some university colleges making the top 50 list as LGBT friendly are Harvard, Emory, Cornell, Stanford, Ohio State, and Stanford. 49

Preliminary Research Shows Children of Same Sex Relationships are doing Well
50
There is no evidence children with samesex parents demonstrate any problems in academic and educational outcomes
N E W S
LGBT N O T I C I A S
Several recent studies released in 2014 show children in same sex relationships are doing well. The University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law’s Williams Institute released its July 2014 findings that indicated in spite of current stigma within society for LGBT families, the children of such relationships are doing “quite well.” Although a majority of children in same sex couples are from a previous same sex relationship, same sex couples are 4.5 times likely to be raising adopted children than heterosexual couples. Some great news from the Williams Institute report findings include: There are few differences between children raised by lesbian and heterosexual parents in terms of selfesteem, quality of life, psychological adjustment, or social functioning. Research with gay male couples is limited. There is no evidence children with same-sex parents demonstrate any problems in academic and educational outcomes. The same sex parents raising children have not been found to differ, on average, in terms of parental warmth, emotional involvement, and quality of relationships with their children than heterosexual parents. Another report released in June 2014 from the University of Melbourne finds that children raised by same-sex couples in Australia are healthier and happier than those raised by heterosexual couples. The report found that children of same sex couples scored on average 6% higher in terms of overall health and family cohesion. The findings suggest that the nurturing process is mutually shared based on the strengths and personality of the same sex parent as opposed to the traditional stereotyped gender male and female role present in the heterosexual couple.

3 Puerto Vallarta Couples Recently Married Congratulations to three Puerto Vallarta couples who recently got married. Who knows? You could meet your future partner right here in Puerto Vallarta and get legally married in the Federal District!
CARLOS ALBERTO CASILLAS & PAUL LAWRENCE Paul (left) and Carlos (right) met in Puerto Vallarta four years ago while Carlos was a server at Marantina restaurant on Calle Púlpito. Carlos, originally from Guadalajara, came to Puerto Vallarta in-season to work and Paul visited often from San Francisco, California. After meeting in the restaurant, they became great friends and traveled to South America and Europe together. They discussed getting married last year, but officially decided only three months ago to tie the knot. On October 3, 2014, they traveled to Mexico City to get married.
CHRISTIAN SERRANO & ERIC MEYER Christian (left) met Eric (right) on October 30, 1996, while Eric was vacationing in Puerto Vallarta. They didn’t realize the event would become life-changing until a short time later. They saw each other every day until Eric left, and by then they knew they were soul-mates. Eric moved to PV six months later and they married on September 18, 2014 in Mexico City.
ALIVER ALVAREZ & MARK BOSLEY Mark (left) and Aliver (right) met in Puerto Vallarta four years ago. Mark was looking for a friend near Aliver’s home and knocked on his door asking for directions and the rest, as they say, is history! Like Christian and Eric, they also married on September 18, 2014 in Mexico City. Aliver had to find a suitable home for Audrey and Murray, his dogs of many years. The newlywed couple will now divide their time between PV and Birmingham, UK. Aliver is the proud father of son Andrew Joshua, age 7.

Ricky Martin, father of twins Matteo (left above) and Valentino, stated part of his decision to come out in 2010 was based on having his two sons. “My kids gave me the strength to come out because I did not want my family to be based on lies.” Ricky told Parade magazine in 2011. Fatherhood has taught him “heavy lessons about simplicity and unconditional love.”

Kevin Simpson, owner of Peyote People gallery in Puerto Vallarta’s El Centro district, recently wrote a very well-received article for First American Art Magazine. What follows is a condensed version of that extremely interesting article. Our thanks, and congratulations, to Kevin and Peyote People gallery!

Huichol Yarn Paintings Like most people, I first saw a ‘yarn painting’ in a small tourist shop in Mexico. It was 1995 and I had just moved to Puerto Vallarta but had never heard of the Huichol tribe. There was something about these yarn paintings that immediately attracted me. The brilliant colors combined with the way the yarn flowed into intricate designs and symbols intrigued me. Since the beginning of time the Huichol or Wixaritari as they call themselves have communicated with their Gods through symbols. Aesthetics change but the meaning or significance of the symbols has remained the same. The more examples I saw of these yarn paintings the more I wanted to know about the people who made them. Surprisingly there are a number of books written about the tribe that go into great detail about their history. The Huichol actually prefer to be called Wixarika. They live in one of the most remote regions of the Sierra Madre Mountains of Western Mexico. Their geographical isolation enabled them to remain untouched for almost 200 years after the fall of the Aztec empire. It was around 1722 when Franciscan missionaries were finally able to penetrate the Sierra. The Franciscan’s brought colorful glass beads with them to trade to the Wixaritari in the hopes of converting them to Christianity. The Wixaritari quickly adapted the beads for use not only in their personal adornments but more importantly in the offerings that they made for their ceremonies and rituals. Part of what make the Wixaritari special is that the beads stuck and the missionaries didn’t. Frustrated by their scattered settlement patterns and unable to break the essence of their belief system, the Franciscans abandoned the Wixaritari, leaving them to their own means.
Huichol Yarn Paintings
It has been 119 years since Lumholtz collected the first pieces of Wixaritari votive art. During that time, the world has changed dramatically, as have the culture of the Wixaritari and the means they use to express it. But, through all those changes- from the votive art to todays mixed media art- only the methods of expression have changed, while the symbols and their meaning remain the same.
Nuestras gracias, y enhorabuena, a Kevin y Peyote People galería!
