SEASONS in the sun

by William Hevener RK Supplement (pg. 13)

Have you ever been told to not visit Puerto Vallarta during ‘low’ season because it’s too hot and humid? Or that Vallarta has no seasons at all? Myths like these need to be dispelled.

Puerto Vallarta has four magical seasons. Each with its own weather pattern, tourist demographic, and GLBT events. Mexican nationals visit PV year-round and many have the discretionary income to purchase the goods and services desired. Mexico’s is the 5th largest emerging economy in the world and the middle class is booming.

14

SUMMER sees PV’s gay beach teeming with cute Mexican men enjoying the sun, surf and gay nightlife. And be prepared for late nights: nationals traditionally go out late, perhaps 1AM to the clubs. Some clubs are open until 6AM,

and since some people don’t “hit the beach” until 3PM, there is plenty of time to sleep in. SUMMER includes the May 1st Mexican Labor Day and is a wonderful time to visit PV. Contrary to widespread rumor, the humidity is not unbearable. Many places in the US have higher humidity and temperatures than PV. Rain here is unlike that in the northern US or Canada. Usually occurring between mid-June and mid-October, it often lasts only two hours at sunset (or through the night). If it rains during the day, the sun quickly returns. Tropical rains are heavy but warm. Most things stop, with

AUTUMN is marked by Mexican Independence Day (Sept 16th) and Day of the Dead (Oct 31). This is “high season” for national tourists! With roughly 25 nationals to every ‘gringo’, your choices are almost unlimited.

WINTER enjoys 85° days and 70° nights, and with less than 15 cloudy days from mid-October through mid-June it is truly perfect weather by most standards. December first starts the 12 Days of Christmas with the processions of Guadalupe, growing larger each night. Neighborhood parties are held in the streets, and many families with children re-enact Joseph and Mary looking for room at the Inn followed by breaking of the piñata with seven sticks (symbolic of Christ’s birth freeing mankind from the seven deadly sins). streets turning quickly into streams. Above the bay incredible lightning becomes Nature’s fireworks show. Rain lowers the humidity until the next day, making a surprisingly cool morning. Nights are pleasant even though it’s hot, and that is why things happen later at night. 2 to 4PM is really the high humidity time of day... perfect for a siesta!

ACTIVIDADES dry, it never gets over 93° with an ever-present cool breeze from the Bay. Days are hot; nights are still cool, with sunsets around 8:30pm. Semana Santa (Easter Week) is another big GLBT party week in Puerto Vallarta. Beaches, streets and bars are packed with people visiting from all over the country. The city offers many free outdoor activities for families such as concerts, clown shows, and dancing recitals along the newly renovated malecón.

New Years is a true celebration with an amazing display of fireworks all around Banderas Bay. When Mexicans celebrate, they party all night long! January also has Kings Day on the 6th. Traditional is the roscón, a cake with figures of the baby Christ baked inside. If you are lucky enough to get a figurine, you get to buy tamales for everyone on Feburary 2nd! Ten days later, on February 12th, PV will see it’s 6th annual Mardi Gras Parade. 2011 saw 75 participants for this growing community event.

OUR STORY SO FAR WWW.GAYPV.MX 28

Our story so far.

Nuestra historia. Claro: tuvo varios amantes jóvenes, morenos, delgados. Todos unos caballeros mexicanos. A raíz de la filmación

In 2010 GAY PV commissioned local writer Mauricio Vargas to begin researching and compiling the definitive gay history of our beloved city. It has been a massive undertaking, and his exhaustive interviews and research tell a heretofore untold tale. This is part two.

PART II by Mauricio Vargas Most likely it was the homosexual halo surrounding any work of Tennessee Williams that brought the first wave of gay tourists to the beaches of Puerto Vallarta. Williams himself tells in his Memoirs: “... and then I met a rich man (in Mexico City) giving parties exclusively for men in his apartment every Saturday night. Then I was no longer alone. The celebrations were really dance, and it was at this dance Saturday night I learned how to ‘follow’. You see, the Mexi-

cans have always had this machismo complex and I was a short man to be leading another boy, so I learned to ‘follow’ very well. They were very happy times there.” Following the filming of The Night of the Iguana written by Williams in 1961 and brought to the screen in 1964, and the stay in this port of the Taylor-Burton couple, Vallarta began to exert a strong attraction for U.S. tourists.

NUESTRA HISTORIA

The woman with violet eyes and her British heart-throb in a short time did more to promote Vallarta than could have been imagined. Liz Taylor had an inclination to surround herself with talented, creative and fun homosexuals, and her stay in Puerto Vallarta would not be an exception. During the evenings at Los Muertos Beach they held the first drag shows exclusively exclusively for the entertainment of a select audience. These uninhibited talent shows, where men (mostly gay) from Acapulco and Guadalajara represented the singers of the time, were not common but proved to be a bicultural event that opened the way for gay individuals in the region, and then (as we shall see in fu-

Of the movie, the Mexican press of the day reported somewhat tongue-in-cheek: “it’s great publicity for Puerto Vallarta attracting eccentric millionaires who enjoy the company of men, old crazy women who don’t care whether they’re with a skinny donkey, a parrot or tight, tough fisherman to have a ridiculous, exaggerated and outrageous romance with.” Ava Gardner was sad at the film’s completion and lamented her return to California. At the airport in Mexico City accompanied by a young Mexican identified as her ‘waterski instructor’, a small dog and her maid, she noted “the atmosphere in Hollywood is hateful, vain and vacuous. Just money and publicity; no real people.” Slowly as Puerto Vallarta’s fame began to grow around the world, so did the town’s calling as a major international tourist destination. In the next chapter, Mauricio takes us from the late 1960s into the early 1970s with a visit to what were the first gay clubs in Vallarta.

There are persistent rumors that Queen Victoria had a small tattoo in an undisclosed 'intimate' location Winston Churchill's mother, Lady Randolph Churchill, had a tattoo of a snake around her wrist, which she covered when the need arose with a specially crafted diamond bracelet.

Over the past 50–100 years, it has become more acceptable for ordinary people to have tattoos and less so for the aristocracy - a reversal of the situation in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Tattooing remains as the archetypal means of body painting and decoration, and certainly the most permanent, and while the traditional popular designs appear to have been devised from heavy metal and motorbike gang culture, these are slowly being replaced by more modern tattoo designs based upon Celtic, Indian and Asian themes in addition to floral and other natural images. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_tattooing
