uerto Vallarta has a rich history of lesbian-owned business... in fact, Balcones -Puerto Vallarta's first real gay disco- was lesbian owned. Apaches (now Vallarta's oldest gay bar run by the original owner) is also lesbian-owned, opening in 1997. In this feature, we are pleased to present some of the successful businesses in Vallarta that just happen to be owned by gay women. There are several other lesbian successful businesses, including Carmen Porras’ El Arrayan, winner of Best Mexican restaurant for several years. Puerto Vallarta tiene una prolífera historia de negocios propiedad de mujeres gay... de hecho, Balcones -la primer disco gay de Puerto Vallarta- fue propiedad de una mujer lesbiana. Apaches (hoy en día el bar gay mas antiguo, manejado por su dueña original) es también propiedad de una mujer gay, y ha estado abierto desde 1997. En este artículo especial nos complace presentar algunos de los muchos negocios exitosos en Vallarta que son propiedad de mujeres gay. Además de estos, hay otros negocios de lesbianas, incluyendo El Arrayan, restaurante propiedad de Carmen Porras. Su restaurante ha sido ganador del premio al Mejor Restaurante Mexicano por varios años.
Sue Keevil y Marie Cohen se mudaron a Puerto Vallarta hace 2 años de Borneo. Ellas son originarias de Wiltshire, Inglaterra, y descubrieron Puerto Vallarta en una visita al cercano Manzanillo. Sue y Marie son propietarias y administradoras del la exitosa PV Sea Dive Shop (tienda de buceo). Sue ha vivido en 52 países y encuentra a PV el lugar más increíble que jamás haya visto, porque aquí las montañas y la selva se levantan 36 desde el mar.
PV SEA DIVE Sue Keevil and Marie Cohen moved to Puerto Vallarta 2 years ago from Borneo. They are originally from Wiltshire, England. They discovered Puerto Vallarta visiting from nearby Manzanillo. Sue and Marie own and operate the successful PV Sea Dive shop. Sue has lived in 52 countries and she finds PV the most amazing place she has ever seen because here the mountains and jungle rise out from the ocean.
DIANA’S TOURS Diana DeCoste arrived from Montreal in 1996 from a background in catering and food service. She came to Puerto Vallarta for the first time on vacation and like many others decided to move here. She soon began her development in a boat cruise which has now become Vallarta's world famous Diana's tours. This season begins her 13th with the season selling out online. Diana has dual citizenship with Canada and Mexico and says she loves Puerto Vallarta and feels totally safe here. Diana DeCoste llegó de Montreal en 1996 con una gran trayectoria en el servicio de catering y alimentos. Vino por primera vez a Puerto Vallarta de vacaciones y, tal como muchos otros, decidió mudarse aquí. Pronto comenzó su desarrollo con un barco de crucero el cual se ha convertido ahora en el mundialmente famoso Diana's Tours. Esta temporada comienza su 13ª temporada con la venta en línea. XOCODIVA ARTISAN CHOCOLATES and LIX by XOCODIVA Carole Fast and Charlotte Semple have been together for 23 years and lived for 6 years in Puerto Vallarta. They are owners of Xocodiva Artisan Chocolates and Lix by Xocodiva. Charlotte also is the Founder and Director of the Old Town Farmers Market. They love the sense of community found in Vallarta, and living in old town is like living in a small town but with all the amenities of a larger city. They also love being able to jump in their car and in 30 minutes be enjoying a completely different experience. Carole Fast y Charlotte Semple han estado juntas por 23 años, y llevan 6 viviendo en Puerto Vallarta. Son las dueñas y administradoras de Xocodiva Artisan Chocolates y Lix by Xocodiva, y Charlotte es la Fundadora y Directora del Mercado de Agricultores del Viejo Vallarta. Les encanta el sentido de comunidad en Vallarta, y vivir en el Viejo Vallarta es para ellas como vivir en un pueblo pequeño pero con todas las comodidades de una gran ciudad, además de que a menos de 30 minutos en coche pueden estar disfrutando de una experiencia totalmente diferente.
Marisol y Laura son de la Ciudad de México y han vivido en Puerto Vallarta por 2 años. Se han mantenido juntas por 9 años, y son dueñas del Restaurante Bistro Teresa, al cual le han dado en complicidad un ambiente íntimo, amigable y donde toda la gente puede disfrutar de los siempre inigualables atardeceres de este bellísimo paraíso llamado Puerto Vallarta.

Jessica Corley & Rhonda Manthei MAIL BOXES ETC. at Molina de Agua Jessica and Rhonda moved to Puerto Vallarta in February, 2011 from Albuquerque, New Mexico. They have been together for 17 years and have 2 children, one of whom attends high school at the American School of Puerto Vallarta, and the other is back in New Mexico studying for his Master's Degree in Social Work. Rhonda and Jess own and operate MailBoxes Etc. in Puerto Vallarta’s Zona Romántica. They find Puerto Vallarta charming and beautiful and are grateful for the opportunity to live in and appreciate the Mexican culture.

Jessica y Rhonda se trasladaron a Puerto Vallarta en febrero de 2011 desde Albuquerque, Nuevo México. Han estado juntas durante 17 años y tienen 2 hijos, uno de los cuales asiste a la escuela secundaria en el Colegio Americano de Puerto Vallarta, y la otra se encuentra en Nuevo México estudiando su Maestría en Trabajo Social. Rhonda y Jess son dueñas y administradoras de Mail Boxes Etc., localizado en la Zona Romántica de Puerto Vallarta. Ambas encuentran a Puerto Vallarta como una ciudad encantadora y hermosa, y están agradecidas por tener la oportunidad de vivir y apreciar la cultura mexicana.

Sylvie Scopazzo es originaria de Vancouver, BC y ha vivido en PV por 15 años. Sylvie inició un grupo de mujerres llamado Ladies Outdoor Club Adventures PV (L.O.C.A.), abierto a todas las mujeres. Es cantante en una banda llamada The Zippers e integrante del duo Sylvie and Jorge. Además es propie-taria del tour llamado Power Walk The Hidden Streets of Vallarta (Facebook) y vende tratamientos orgánicos para perros que ella misma produce. Claramente Sylvie tomó la decisión correcta al mudarse a Puerto Vallarta. POWER WALK THE HIDDEN STREETS OF VALLARTA Sylvie Scopazzo is originally from Vancouver, BC and she has been in PV for 15 years. She was tired of the cloudy climate in Vancouver and moved to PV from on a friend's recommendation. Sylvie started a women only group called: LADIES OUTDOOR CLUB ADVENTURES P.V. (L.O.C.A.) She sings in a band called, THE ZIPPERS, and also a duo with a guitarist. SYLVIE AND JORGE. Finally, she owns and operates a tour called: POWER WALK THE HIDDEN STREETS OF VALLARTA (facebook) and can be found at the Saturday Old Town Farmer's market selling the organic dog treats she makes herself. Cleary Slyvie made a success in her decision to move to Puerto Vallarta.
APACHES Vancouver social worker Mari-ann Rattray (r) had been visiting PV since 1984 when she realized that life was too short not to pursue a dream. In 1997 she relocated to PV and opened Apaches Martini Bar on Olas Altas. It would not prove easy: she was denied a liquor license because of her sexual orientation. Rather than give up, she decided to fight and after visiting municipal authorities finally she was given the green-light. “I felt like a warrior going through that process,” says Rattray. That experience, coupled with an article in Vanity Fair, led to the name Apaches. In 1999 a young woman named Endra Bruining flew into town with some friends from Holland. Sitting at table number 5 in Apaches, Endra met Mari-ann and the rest, as they say, is “herstory”. On the success of Apaches, they have been lucky to have good staff and a varied customer base. Is running a business with your life partner a difficult thing? Mariann sums up her relationship with Endra quite simply: “she’s the best thing that’s ever happened in my life.”
La trabajadora social de Vancouver Mari-Ann Rattray había estado visitando Puerto Vallarta desde 1984, cuando se dio cuenta que la vida era demasiado corta para no perseguir un sueño. En 1997 se trasladó a Puerto Vallarta y abrió Apaches Martini Bar en Olas Altas, pero la apertura del lugar no resultaría fácil: se le negó una licencia de licor debido a su orientación sexual. En lugar de darse por vencido, decidió luchar y después de visitar el palacio municipal todos los días finalmente le dieron luz verde. "Me sentí como un guerrero pasando por ese proceso", dice Rattray. Esa experiencia, junto con un artículo en la revista Vanity Fair, condujo al nombre de Apaches. En 1999, una joven llamada Endra Bruining voló a Vallarta desde Holanda con algunos amigos. Sentada en la mesa número 5 en Apaches, Endra conoció a Mari-Ann y el resto, como dicen, es "herstory". En el éxito de los Apaches han tenido la suerte de tener un buen personal y una base de clientes variada. Manejar un negocio en pareja es una cosa difícil? Renowned abstract artist Alfonso Peña paints heavy textures with oils on canvas using the primary colors of the earth. He was born in Queretaro,Mexico. The first GLBT pride parade in Mexico started in Mexico City in 1979. It occurs in June and has become large, visible and well attended. Mexico City is now leading the scene with city governmental support of businesses marketing GLBT weddings, gay events and AIDS awareness. The city is the leader in terms of arts and culture, culinary wonders, trendy hip shopping, and history - from its Spanish Colonial landmarks to the historic homes (now museums) of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Leon Trotsky. The city has large world renowned museums like Tamayo Museum of Contemporary Art, Modern Art Museum, Antropology Museum, and the Soumaya museum. Gay nightlife is centered in Mexico City’s established gay zone, the Zona Rosa, much like Puerto Vallarta's Romantic Zone.
