things to know about planning a gay wedding Keep this expert advice in mind as you start to pull together your day.

it’s okay to toss tradition aside

Since there aren’t any set rules in place to follow, you have the luxury to do whatever you want, says Bryan Rafanelli, celebrity event planner and founder of Rafanelli Events. Whether that means having your dog walk you both down the aisle or wearing shorts and matching “Groom” and “Groom” shirts, your wedding should include the elements that will make it your perfect day. Same goes for traditional moments like cutting the cake or the first dance: Feel free to do them, skip them or put your own special twist on them.

If you do end up leaving out any of the typical traditions, it’s a good idea to replace those gaps with some other fun alternatives. Believe it or not, many guests actually look forward to those traditional moments and they can help make the evening flow, says Bernadette CoveneySmith, founder of 14 Stories. Consider adding drag performers, a cocktail hour cabaret show, a prop-filled photo booth, or other forms of entertainment that will excite and surprise your guests.

Not to be a downer, but your marriage won’t be recognized by many states (yet, anyway), Coveney-Smith says. Hire an attorney and a financial adviser

who understands LGBT family law to draw up the documents that will help protect your new family, so you can have peace of mind when you travel the world together as newlyweds and beyond!

Same-sex weddings just aren’t the same as straight ones, when a bride and groom can easily surprise each other and still look coordinated, says bridal designer Matthew Christopher. Instead, it makes sense to plan out (or even shop for) your looks together, so you can create a cohesive style that mirrors the overall vibe of your day. “That doesn’t mean you have to dress exactly the same (unless you want to!), but aesthetically you should look like you go together,” Christopher says.

The wedding industry is still typically bride-centric. If you’re marrying in a major city, you may not encounter discrimination, but you may come across accidental slip-ups like references to the bride and groom, warns Coveney-Smith. To minimize any problems, seek out reputable gay-owned wedding companies in your area. Start by checking out your local Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, ask recently married same-sex friends for recommendations, or browse pros on TheKnot .com/gayweddings.

wedding timeline You’ve waited a long time—what’s another twelve months of planning? Here’s what to do, when, on your way to the altar. Choose a wedding date and time. Then go to and enter your wedding date to get a free personalized to-do list. 6–8 MONTHS P lan out the ceremony with your officiant and discuss any requirements. 2–3 MONTHS Shop for and buy your wedding rings. Decide on favors. Order or start making them. Work on your vows (if you’re writing them). Attend food tastings and finalize the menus. Finalize any wedding accessories you plan to wear. Send out your wedding invitations at the six-to-eight-week mark.

1 MONTH Create a day-of schedule to time out all of the details (hour by hour). Finalize the ceremony details and lineup. Schedule a follow-up meeting with your officiant to go over final details the week before. Order or prepare welcome bags to place in out-of-town guests’ hotel rooms.

1–2 WEEKS

Follow up with any guests who have not yet returned their response cards. Create the seating chart and give it to your caterer, site manager, planner and photographer. Give your caterer the final head count. Include your wedding pros, such as band members and the photographer, who will expect a meal. Confirm all final details with all your vendors. Apply for your marriage license together.

2–3 DAYS Arrange and confirm transportation to the airport for your honeymoon.

In straight weddings, tradition calls for the bride’s family to pick up the ceremony and reception tab, while the groom’s hosts the rehearsal dinner. But even that’s changing, and more couples are footing the bill or sharing the costs in a variety of ways. Modern-day weddings no longer have set rules, so do what makes the most financial sense. Maybe you and your partner equally split the bill, or the one who makes more money takes a larger share. If your parents support your plans, ask if they’d like to contribute. Bottom line: Everyone involved should pay as much or as little as they’re comfortable with.

In the last cooler, Ross found a ring on top of a mini-bottle of St-Germain, his favorite liqueur. “I looked up and Noa was already holding my hands in his. I went from shock to embarrassment to happiness to tears in a matter of minutes. It was all so quick,” Ross recalls.

On Christmas Day, Josh (right) gave Pat multiple gifts, including a ring wrapped in several boxes. In the second-to-last box, Pat found a card with a photo of them hugging and laughing in West Palm Beach and a message: “Because I want us to be this happy forever...will you please accept this ring?” “After he said yes I gave him the final gift—a bottle of champagne that we drank to celebrate,” Josh says.

rom the opulent, chateau-inspired venue to the gilded invites, every last detail of Carla Widman (39 and a commercial pilot; previous, right) and Margaret Gesualdi’s (43 and a VP and managing partner at a risk advisory company) wedding was designed with glamour in mind. The lavish day also included a variety of live performances and an elegant wedding canopy (complete with its own crystal chandelier!) embellished with lush flowers and drapery in a rich palette of deep burgundy, red and gold. 1 A custom aisle runner displayed a romantic quote. 2 In place of rice, guests showered the newlyweds with red petals. 3 Edible gold and crystal embellishments—which mirrored the motif on the invites—adorned the five-tier fondant cake. 4 “They were full of old-world charm but still modern, thanks to the metallic red card stock and shiny gold foil,” Margaret says of their custom-made, double-sided invitations.

ew Yorkers Jesus Perez (30 and managing director of technology and evaluation at The Bronx Defenders; previous, left) and Luis Infante (26 and a senior coordinator at Jewish Home Lifecare) always envisioned having their wedding in a warm, tropical climate, so it was no surprise when they invited their friends and family to join them in Hawaii. In keeping with their surroundings, the couple picked a beachy palette of cerulean and white and filled their day with lots of Hawaiian traditions (check out those gorgeous leis!) and local details. 1 Dapper little flamingos wearing bow ties topped the two-tier textured confection. 2 Small white arrangements didn’t compete with the beautiful scenery. 3 The ring bearer’s outfit matched the grooms, while the flower girl donned a long chiffon dress. 4 The blowing of the Pu (conch shell) was one of several Hawaiian rituals at the couple’s oceanfront ceremony.

ooking to create an experience with a strong sense of community, Jessie Jacobson (35 and a web developer; previous, right) and Kate Moore (36 and a culinary educator at Community Cooking With Kate) organized a weekend-long affair at a lakeside lodge. Each guest arrived to find a camper’s guide with a full itinerary that included morning yoga, arts and crafts, and, of course, a big bonfire with s’mores. 1 Everyone pitched in to decorate the ceremony site. “We gave them a bunch of supplies—paper fans, ribbon, parasols— and let them go at it! Even better than DIY is DIT (do it together!),” Kate says. 2 A glass sign personalized the entrance. 3 Jessie’s blue gingham button-down matched the trim on Kate’s embroidered dress. 4 At the craft table, guests were invited to make their own name tags.

5 All of the meals were designed by Kate but cooked by two chef friends. “They did a fantastic job executing my vision—and they did it all in slow cookers and electric roaster ovens!” Kate says. 6 Guests got to pick their favorite mug or glass from a fun, mismatched selection. 7 As a nod to the couple’s home state, Kate wore a pendant in the shape of Minnesota.

nspired by the sunny California weather, Eric Finkelstein (39 and a real estate investor and asset manager; above, right), and Jeffrey Stevens (44 and VP of digital archives at Warner Bros. Entertainment) infused their day with gorgeous pops of yellow. A cheery candy bar, chic boutonnieres and a 10-foot-tall butterfly (followed by an equally tall butterfly catcher!) were just some of the carefully chosen elements that featured the bright hue. 1 Both grooms opted for classic black three-piece suits with white silk neckties for the ceremony. For the reception, they changed into more lively bow ties. 2 Their three flower girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;daughters of some of their attendantsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;wore yellow or white dresses and tossed yellow petals. 3 Many traditional elements, like the signing of the ketubah (wedding contract), were included in the Jewish ceremony.

4 Square silver bases lent a masculine balance to the cheerful yellow and white blooms. 5 “I went to see the Bel-Air Bay Club and the decision made itself. The club was beautiful and perfectly located on a bluff above the Pacific Coast Highway overlooking the ocean,” Jeffrey says. 6 Sunflower-filled glass vases doubled as yarmulke holders. 7 Along with the butterfly, guests encountered ’20s-era performers—a cigarette girl handing out party favors and a newspaper photographer taking Polaroids. 7

or Makenna Held (28 and a business consultant and coach; previous, left) and Yvonne Johnston (33 and a captain in the US Air Force) love hit fast and hard...kind of like a rugby player. The pair met while playing for the Glendale Raptors, a women’s rugby team in Colorado, and four months later—bam!—they were engaged. At a rustic resort on a picturesque island in the Pacific Northwest, they held a three-day affair with vintage details, hand-spun touches and plenty of military pride. 1 Both Makenna and Yvonne (who changed out of her uniform after the ceremony) wanted bespoke silk dresses with a nod to the 1920s. 2 On the way to the island, the to-be-weds stopped at Seattle’s famed Pike Place Market to buy fresh bouquets and blooms for the boutonnieres. 3 Chalkboards made from repurposed shutters listed the seat assignments. 4 The couple referred to their attendants as the “frills and twills.” The frills wore purple convertible dresses, all styled differently, while the twills sported gray slacks with suspenders and purple ties.

5 The wedding meal was self-catered by the newlyweds and all their guests. “I love cooking for people and wanted to share that experience with everyone,” Makenna says. 6 The centerpieces were composed of vintage finds like mason jars, old books and a wooden shoe last. 7 “‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ had recently been repealed, and for the first time in my career I was able to openly showcase two very big parts of my life—the military and my relationship. It meant a lot to get married in my uniform and be a role model for others,” Yvonne says.

hen a highly sought-after wedding and event planner gets married and it’s New Year’s Eve, there’s going to be some major expectations. Todd Fiscus (47 and owner and creative director of Todd Events; left) lived up to—and way, way beyond—them with a four-day extravaganza for his nuptials to Gonzolo Ceron (49 and owner of Ceron Salon). Since “there is no more glamorous place” than New York City, according to Todd, the couple headed there to host a total of five events. Though each one was distinctive, Todd tied them together by branding the weekend with a custom interlocking monogram. Classic colors (gold, black, cream and pops of red and blue) also helped create a cohesive feel and a luxe vibe perfect for the holiday season. 1 For the rehearsal dinner, the couple wore chic, festive suits. 2 Rehearsal dinner place cards mirrored the rustic style of the restaurant, an Italian trattoria. 3 A well-stocked hospitality room at The Carlyle hotel was open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day of the celebration. Guests were welcome to come in for drinks, snacks and even NYC souvenirs. And to carry it all: “I Heart TC” totes. 4 The day before and the day of the reception, a team from Ceron’s salon was on hand to pamper guests.

5 Todd’s friend and celebrity wedding planner Marcy Blum officiated the ceremony in front of a flower wall that included 9,220 garden roses, hydrangeas, peonies, ranunculus, sweet peas and lisianthus. 6 A custom sign-in book had hand-drawn illustrations of every couple attending the wedding as well as one of the newlyweds with their dog, Pippa the pug. 7 After an extravagant five-course dinner accompanied with Dom Perignon, Ceron and Todd’s ceremony began at 10:30 p.m. The couple wrote their own vows, but had each of their 13 groomswomen read a portion for them. 8 Low, tightly-packed arrangements allowed for unobstructed views—the modern glass-walled venue overlooked the city and the Hudson River. 7

9 The couple’s interlocking monogram appeared throughout the entire weekend on everything from the elegant napkins to the hospitality room’s snacks. 10 New Year’s Eve party hats were dressed in the wedding’s color palette. 11 Legendary baker Sylvia Weinstock, another of Todd’s close friends, created the gilded cake. “We told her the overall theme and then let her do the rest. It was spectacular and perfect!” Todd says. 12 At the stroke of midnight, a group of dancers performed a chorus line to “New York, New York.”

hile planning their 10-year anniversary party, Andrea Davila (31 and a portfolio manager for a social venture fund; right) and Grace Glenny (32 and a senior group manager for Target.com) suddenly decided a wedding made more sense. So the designminded duo curated a one-of-a-kind day at a former brass foundry and filled it with an eclectic mix of their favorite things. 1 Andrea wore an off-white, vintage-inspired gown, then swapped it for a blue dress at the reception. ith help from a planner and a few close friends, Josh Yates (31 and a managing member of Pure Kitchen Catering & City View Loft; previous, right) pulled off a surprise wedding in Paris for his fiancé, Dan Hannula (26 and also a managing member of Pure Kitchen), who thought they were just there on vacation! One hour after the best woman presented him with an invite to his own wedding, Dan met Josh for an intimate garden ceremony followed by a lively dinner in the artsy Marais district. 1 Postceremony, the grooms walked to one of the famous “locks of love” bridges. 2 Josh secretly had custom suits made for them. 3 The couple toasted their nuptials at a glassenclosed restaurant perched atop the Centre Pompidou. “As we dined, the sun set and all of Paris lit up beneath us,” Josh recalls.

hortly after getting engaged, Pat Sandora (31 and a digital content director; right) and Billy Nastyn (30 and a graphic artist) began fielding tons of questions from friends and family about their same-sex wedding. “We realized there had to be other people out there going through the same situation,” Pat recalls. With that in mind, the pair launched a video blog on YouTube dedicated to answering all those questions gay couples often face and recording their own journey as they planned. One year—and thousands of loyal followers—later, Billy and Pat live-streamed their winter wedding, held at a cozy, antiques-filled townhouse. 1 The couple shopped together so they could coordinate their looks. 2 Inspired by an idea from their planner, the grooms rounded up wedding photos from all of their married guests and displayed them together in gold frames. 3 Billy wore his late grandfather’s ring while Pat’s was custom made to look like his father’s wedding band. 4 A fish tank at the venue got the personal treatment.

5 The cookie table is a tradition from Pat’s hometown, Pittsburgh. Both Billy and Pat’s families baked assorted cookies for their guests. 6 “I picked up on the artdeco details of our venue’s front door and incorporated that style into the stationery design,” Billy says. 7 Mercury glass lanterns added a soft glow throughout the space. Billy’s mom handmade more than 30 of them out of mason jars and LED lights. 8 The couple toasted their guests on the balcony overlooking the atrium. 5

retchen Guier (32 and a photographer and a server at Foreign Cinema; previous, right) and Tyra Charbonnet (39 and chef and owner of Lagniappes Food Truck) returned to the city where they fell in love to host a wedding at an historic New Orleans home. “Long before it was an event space, I used to drive by it and think ‘I’m going to live there one day.’ I never thought I’d be able to get married there!” Gretchen recalls. With exposed brick and antique gas lanterns, the charming early 19th-century house was the perfect backdrop for their vintage-inspired day. 1 The ceremony was held in the venue’s brick-faced courtyard. 2 After the first dance, a brass band burst through the gates and surprised everyone with a lively performance. 3 Gretchen and her mom hand-stained the wooden chair signs.

4 “ Race & Religious (the venue) has all this cool furniture you can use however you like. Our altar was a table made out of an old door held up by a wrought-iron base,” Gretchen says. 5 Instead of a traditional cake, the brides set up a pretty display of cupcakes. 6 Each cupcake was topped with a chocolate fleur-de-lis, New Orlean’s signature symbol, and a tiny pennant. 7 “We chose ‘Lovely Day’ by Maroon 5 for our first dance, not because they’re our favorite band, but because that song says so much about our love,” Gretchen says.

hen DOMA was struck down a year and a half after their civil union in Chicago, Kevin Weinstein (42 and a wedding photographer; above, right) and Ryan Sabin (36 and an inventory control specialist at Apple) finally had the chance to get what they always dreamed of: a federally recognized wedding. The pair flew back to Kevin’s hometown of San Francisco for a simple city hall ceremony that focused on what mattered most to the couple—getting married. 1 Since they wore formal suits for their civil union, the couple opted for dark jeans and blazers (and one jaunty fedora!) for a more laid-back, city-chic look. 2 “We were both so nervous filling out the paperwork. Even though we had been through that process in Chicago, this was the real thing!” Kevin recalls. 3 “The kiss in Chicago was incredible, and so was this one, but it had a different meaning for sure,” says Kevin. “The historic significance of the moment flooded both of us with such gratitude.”

t’s a good thing Lexi Ritsch (31 and a wedding designer/planner at Lexi Stolz Design; right) and Kim Stolz (31 and an author/VP of equity derivatives sales at Citigroup) were fans of long engagements—they stayed in that “magical stage,” as Lexi called it, for 16 months—because it gave them plenty of time to design their gorgeous summery wedding at Kim’s parents’ house. Thanks to Lexi’s expertise, there were pin-worthy moments everywhere you looked, from a beautifully curated sign-in table to a 20-foot pallet bar covered in moss. 1 The to-be-weds chose white gowns to fit their individual styles—very classic for Kim, more boho for Lexi. 2 Kim and Lexi wed under a lush floral arch that separated the ceremony from the cocktail hour. 3 The couple’s dog, Izzy, played ring bearer (hello, adorable French cuffs!). 4 At the sign-in table, guests wrote well-wishes on prestamped vintage postcards and “mailed” them in the rented postbox.

Their floral-filled affair at a downtown NYC hotel bloomed with an extravagant huppah and lofty centerpieces. 1 Both brides carried a vibrant mix of wildflowers and peonies. 2 Graphic save-thedates introduced the city-inspired motif that appeared on all of the paper elements. “Some of our happiest memories have been sitting on our roof deck looking out at all the water towers that dot the skyline near us. Our stationer used that as the starting point,” Jeannie says. 3 Jeannie accessorized her chiffon dress with a brooch from a flea market. Lisa had a tailor add a sequin appliqué to the front of her mermaid gown.

4 “We really deferred to our florist for most of the decisions, and we couldn’t have been happier with the results. It felt like we were all dining under the trees in the springtime,” recalls Jeannie. 5 Marble coasters wrapped in a paper band served as both favors and escort cards. 6 In place of a first dance, Jeannie serenaded Lisa with “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Make You Feel My Love,” and then had some of the guys from her college singing group perform “29 Ways.”

usic has been a part of many of Tommy Barth (25 and in human resources; left) and Kyle Piers’s (26 and a research biochemist) big relationship moments. The pair met when Kyle saw Tommy perform in a college musical, and four and a half years later, Kyle proposed with the help of Tommy’s college a capella group. So it came as no surprise that a year and half after that, the couple would fill their contemporary wedding with plenty of new musical memories. 1 In keeping with the day’s modern aesthetic, the grooms donned sleek navy suits. 2 An orange calla lily and a fiddlehead fern lent a fanciful touch to their lapels. 3 Tommy arranged all the ceremony music, including the pre-processional piece, which they playfully named the “Homo Matrimony Suite.”

4 The couple kept the ceremony décor simple yet chic. 5 Kyle’s family’s longtime jeweler created their diamond bands. 6 Each table was named for a prominent Boston street. “For both of us, Boston has been the first place we’ve felt unconditionally accepted. It’s where we went to college, where we work, where we met our dearest friends—it’s our home,” Kyle says. 7 Alumni from Tommy’s a capella group at Boston University flew in from all over the country to sing a special number for the ceremony.

8 After taking lessons for two months, Tommy and Kyle performed a waltz for their first dance. 9 A modern gallery wall in the hallway leading to the ceremony displayed photos from the couple’s engagement shoot. 10 Thanks to an expert DJ and colorful LED foam sticks, the last half of the reception took on a club vibe. “Of all the compliments we got, our amazing DJ was by far the most mentioned,” Kyle says.

When the newlyweds posted photos of their day on Tumblr, they received an outpouring of love as more than 60,000 people left positive comments and liked and reposted the images. One look at their beautiful, book-themed nuptials and it’s not hard to see why. 1 Kat and Meredith exchanged vows under a huge trellis covered in grape vines. 2 A selection of the couple’s favorite literary quotes (and a few David Bowie lyrics!) wrapped around the buttercream cake. 3 The rings were tucked into a Harry Potter book, right next to the chapter “The Unbreakable Vow.” 3

othing exudes timeless elegance like The Plaza, making it the perfect match for Jimmy Serrano (27 and Program Manager, Global Talent Acquisitions for Amazon; right) and Kurt Roggin’s (41 and Head of Human Resources for Biogen Idec-USA) formal affair. To play off the aesthetics of the historic hotel, they chose a classic black, white, ivory and gold palette and complemented the space with lush white flowers, soft candlelight and gold-rimmed china. Topping things off: a sky-high cake. 1 The couple picked classic Cartier Love rings. 2 Escort cards were tucked into small elegant envelopes. 3 “We let our ‘groomsmaids’ and men choose their own evening gowns and tuxedos. We told them all to dress like they were going to the Oscars,” Kurt says. 4 The Plaza’s lofty, opulent rooms called for expansive floral arrangements.

5 The almost-five-foot-tall cake from Sylvia Weinstock was completely decked out in handmade sugar flowers. “It was like nothing you’ve ever seen,” Kurt recalls. 6 The highlight of the rehearsal dinner? A cheeky cake topper. “It was a hit— everyone loved it!” Kurt says. 7 Close friends gifted the couple with a portrait of their beloved Wire Fox Terrier, Hudson. He was also the inspiration for the favors—custom-made iced sugar cookies in the shape of the pup. 8 A custom gold monogram adorned the tasteful ivory invites.

9 Chic white orchids overflowing in glass vases served as the centerpieces. 10 Putting their own twist on tradition, Jimmy and Kurt together tossed one of the “groomsmaid” bouquets to all of their single friends on the dance floor. 9

nja Tranovich (31 and a freelance communications specialist; below, left) and Kellye Rogers (34 and a senior project manager for Phase2) looked no further than their favorite season to design a sophisticated affair with a touch of vintage glamour. Organic bouquets in their rich fall palette—scarlet, cream, purple and chocolate—anchored the day’s décor and blended perfectly with the botanical garden backdrop. 1 The couple wed under a large weeping willow tree. 2 Both brides wore a bold red lip color to complement the old-Hollywood-glam vibe they were going for. 3 “All the flowers tied into our palette. Our florist did a great job creating beautiful, but not too manicured, bouquets,” Anja says. 4 A cascade of crimson blooms gave the all-white fondant cake some seasonal flair. 2

hen a graphic designer gets married, you can guarantee there’ll be tons of cool details, like the handcrafted invitation suite Michael Frey (39 and owner of Frey Art & Design; previous, left) designed for his wedding to Tim Campbell (37 and director of product development for TeamCoco). Not to mention custom programs, bow ties, table runners, escort cards, fabric pennants and favor bags all assembled by the couple. Native flowers and succulent plants mingled with one-of-a-kind touches to complete their desert-chic affair. 1 “Our florist surprised us with bright orange poppies that really added a fun punch of color to our more neutral palette,” Michael says. 2 Designed to look like a newspaper, the programs announced the couple’s happy news. 3 A true labor of love: Michael designed all of the stationery including the invites, which he made from an array of textured paper and then custom stamped. 4 Tiny pennants decorated a birdcage used to corral envelopes.

5 The pair exchanged vows they had written. “We were both choking back tears,” Michael recalls. 6 To tie their looks together, Michael had matching bow ties and pocket squares made from an ikat-print fabric he designed. 7 A close friend (who’s a baker) made the wedding cake as her gift to the couple. The four-tier confection had white chocolate ganache over each layer and a lemon curd filling. 8 Lola, the couple’s dog, dressed for the occasion in a collar of yellow billy balls. 5

arol Fabrizio (31 and an in-house attorney for Vail Resorts; left) always knew she wanted to get married at her dad’s house, so after Jillion Potter (27 and a professional rugby player for USA Rugby) popped the question under a willow tree—also at Carol’s dad’s house— the pair organized an all-day laid-back affair. The festivities began early with a casual pre-party, which included fun yard games, and wrapped up late after a tented reception with a big BBQ buffet and tons of dancing. 1 Lush hydrangeas, roses, purple stock and lavender scabiosa starred in Carol’s summery bouquet. 2 “I knew I wanted a simple-yet-timeless strapless gown. I bought the first one I tried on—it was perfect!” Carol recalls. Jillion took slightly longer before settling on her elegant gray suit. 3 Carol and Jillion each walked down from the balcony of the house and followed a trail of petals to the gazebo where the ceremony was held.

4 Tables were layered with lilac tablecloths, burlap runners, flower-filled mason jars and small chalkboards that displayed fun facts about the newlyweds. 5 A large photo collage of the couple decorated a tree by the backyard pond. 6 “We came across tiny jars of honey on Etsy while searching for favors and thought they’d go great with the rustic theme. Plus, Jillion has a special interest in bees and honey making, so that was also fitting,” Carol says.
