INSPIRATION T

his year we are all about intimate celebrations.

2020 hit the wedding industry hard and it put so many engaged couples in an uncomfortable bind. Where many couples were forced to cancel or reschedule their big 2020 dream wedding, some couples took to a more creative approach and decided to have a mini-wedding or a microwedding. Although Will and Dre have been married for years they wanted a chance to showcase their love and encourage other couples to celebrate their union regardless of how many guests are in attendance. They wanted to illustrate what it looks like to blissfully celebrate intimately. And they rocked it! Their planner, Courtney-Rose of Dantus and Co Events, chose Accelerator Space, a chic industrial space in Baltimore, Maryland, as their venue for the day. Their florists, Petalos, accentuated and lightened the space with cream and blush florals flowing throughout the ceremony and reception areas. Their Stationary by Citrus Press Co perfectly matched the aesthetic of the day by using soft neutrals with a touch of blush. Throughout the day, their photographers, Megapixels Media, respected their space by staying at least 6 feet away with their masks on. The creative visual team also encouraged Will and Dre to be themselves by giving them slight prompts to help with posing naturally while they captured them from different vantage points. gayweddingsmag.com / GWM 5

The couple started the day at a sweetheart table made for two and then escaped outside to a ceremony where they could share some sweet words and memories of their actual wedding day with each other. They then headed back indoors to enjoy a cozy cocktail hour by the fireplace before the cut their cake and made their toasts to each other. Wearing modern attire with a high fashion twist these two not only looked amazing, you could tell they really felt great too! And the energy they shared throughout the day was magnetic! They wrapped up their day outside of Accelerator Space with a bottle of champagne in hand. They popped the bottle, gave each other a kiss and ran down the street to their getaway car. We don’t know when we’ll be able to have big celebrations again but we do know that we don’t need a lot of people to celebrate true love. We want to thank Will and Dre for inspiring others to make the fearless decision to have their very own intimate miniwedding to celebrate their union.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO COUPLES THINKING ABOUT STARTING A FAMILY?

The best advice I could give is to be open minded and compromising. There are so many learning curves when starting a family and adapting to the change of being more than a couple is a big adjustment. HOW CAN A COUPLE PREPARE FOR PARENTHOOD?

Besides owning every baby contraption on the market these days, the best way you could prepare would probably be by getting real life experiences with friend’s kids. However, in my opinion nothing really prepares you for motherhood like experiencing it. It’s the hardest and best thing I’ve ever done but I have been learning and winging it since the day my son was born. WHAT ABOUT AFTER THE BABY ARRIVES?

Accept ALL the help. Seriously. If people are offering help, take it! Also- if having visitors seems like a lot or people are making it harder for you in the first few days, don’t be afraid to say no visitors or limit visitors to one a day.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO CAPTURE YOUR PREGNANCY WITH A PHOTO SHOOT?

We never really thought to do it with our first. we decided to have one more baby and we wanted to celebrate our last. It was very exciting! HOW AND DID YOU CHOOSE THE SETTING OF YOUR MATERNITY PHOTOSHOOT?

We never in a million years ever dreamed we would live in Hawaii, so a beautiful beach just made sense. DID YOU INCLUDE OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS IN YOUR PHOTOSHOOT?

Yes- our first, Zachary. He is the light of our world and his excitement for everything is raw. Just him being there I ifted our spirits. DO YOU KNOW THE GENDER OF YOUR BABY?

While we call the baby by assigned gender at birth, emphasizing it before he was born seemed strange. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PICTURE FROM THE DAY, AND WHY?

Where we are walking as a family down the beach. We were able to take the view in and you almost forgot someone was there. It was incredible!

STORY BY PAUL DOUDA PHOTOGRAPHY:

It has been pure happiness watching Bianca and Sara’s family grow! After capturing their wedding in 2015, maternity session in 2019, and family session with their perfect baby girl Liona in 2020, it is like being a part of the MarinoSwikard’s extended family. This year, we decided to capture these two gorgeous mama’s and baby girl at Mission Trails Regional Park near Lake Murray for their holiday cards and 5 year anniversary announcement. Dressed in their holiday best, Bianca, Sara, and Liona brought all the style and sass to their family session. According to Bianca and Sara, the thing they love most about motherhood is watching Liona explore new things and the joy she expresses when she discovers them. Although she wasn’t so sure of the new park, she sure did enjoy being with her two favorite ladies in the world. It has been such a privilege capturing Bianca and Sara’s family milestones and we can’t wait to continue it!

LET’S START AT THE BEGINNING. HOW DID YOU TWO FIRST MEET?

We first began chatting on the dating app Tindr, but our first date was in downtown Seattle for happy hour, dinner, and a ride on the ‘Seattle Great Wheel’ ferris wheel. WHAT MAKES YOUR RELATIONSHIP SPECIAL?

We both deeply value integrity in everything we do. In our relationship, in the work that we do, and in the lives we lead. We constantly strive to better ourselves. HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR PARTNER WAS THE ONE?

I knew I loved him very early in the relationship, but I knew he was “the one” that I would be with forever when we met one another’s families after just three months together. It was clear that we were meant to create our own family from those roots. GIVE US ALL THE DETAILS ABOUT THE PROPOSAL. HOW AND WHERE DID IT HAPPEN?

Justin did a full recreation of our first date on our anniversary. At the end of the date we went back to our home together, put a fire in the fireplace, cuddled with our dogs, and just when I thought the night was over - he got down on one knee and surprised me with the big question. We’re all about the bling... Tell us all about that ring! We keep it very simple! Just a white gold band.

ABI & JASMINE madbau photo + video

18 GWM / Summer 2021

STORY BY MADBAU PHOTO + VIDEO

Abi and Jasmine knew each other long before they became engaged. They laid a strong foundation of friendship before stepping into love and it shows. They describe themselves as “awkward but deeply in love.” Let me be the first to say, their love definitely runs deep but there is absolutely nothing awkward about these two! They spend every moment they can together and love to love on each other. They love to spend time adventuring outside just as much as they enjoy cuddling up with a bottle of wine on a pallet of blankets and pillows. To get them in their element, we walked through corn fields, chasing the last bit of evening light. They admired grazing cattle and got a little steamy among the Christmas trees. We played in the “snow” and enjoyed a quiet moment as the sun disappeared behind the trees. A butterfly made of reflected light even flew across the images as Jasmine spun Abi joyfully, lifted her into the air, and kissed her in the setting sun. We don’t need to get into the symbolism but just know it was more special than any of us can say.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING!

REALWEDDINGS

We chose June 27 because June is pride month and we wanted to tip our hats to those that paved the way for us to be able bond our love with legal matrimony. We didn’t really set out with a theme in mind, but the one thing we did pick out were our colors! Our rings are beautifully white and rose gold, so we wanted to incorporate the rose gold color. We decided on a burgundy, sage green, rose gold and wood elements. Our decor was mostly DIY and on the vintage or rustic side of things. My brother married us and spoke about Plato’s Symposium - how we have found our other half. It was magical and fit perfectly with the vows we wrote for each other. Not to mention that Hedwig and the Angry Inch is my favorite musical...my wife surprised me years ago when we were in San Francisco and I saw it live! Darren Criss as Hedwig! HOW DID YOU MEET? TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL.

We met in 2013 at a roller derby game. My wife had just moved to the area and came to watch a game, I had just played and we met at the afterparty. We didn’t start dating until 2015, but I really liked her from the moment we met. The day that she proposed to me...oh man, I had no idea! None! We went to a forest about 30 miles from our home, to help a photographer friend collect some photos for a workshop she was teaching. We walked through this forest posing and pretending not to pose. As we are going along, I can feel a change in energy, almost like vibration - my wife 22 GWM / Summer 2021

is suddenly hugging me closer, tighter, longer. We get to the spot where our photographer says, “Well this is about the last place.” We are holding each other and swaying together, my wife is telling me how she made a pros and cons list as to why we shouldn’t get married. I am listening and laughing, so like her to make a list. Still no clue. Then she does the unthinkable! She pulls away from my embrace, kneels before me, and pulls a ring out of her pocket! I am stunned. Shocked. She asked me to marry her, I am crying, and totally taken aback. I use profanity - uttering my non-belief. I say yes, YES. Of course, I never imagined this whole thing was a set-up. LOL!

A local minister officiates the ceremony, and a basic boutonniere and a flower bouquet is available, along with a toast for two with “Ivonne Les Comte” sparkling wine. Meanwhile wedding guests can enjoy a plethora of activities at the resort, from paddleboarding and kayaking to relaxing by the recently upgraded and Puerto Vallarta’s largest infinity pool and enjoying a complimentary tequila tasting of the resort’s own brand of tequila. Families with little ones can also take advantage of Marriott’s Kid Club or join in on a baby sea turtle release when in season and when Mother Nature allows. Located within the quieter Marina Vallarta area, it’s an easy hop, skip and a jump from downtown Puerto Vallarta’s amazing art galleries, Zona Romántica’s gay nightlife and the bustling Los Muertos Beach. The scenic coastal town is a long-standing, world-class LGBTQ haven. The Marriott sits right beside the Marina Vallarta Golf Club, while the shops and restaurants of the Marina boardwalk are within walking distance. 26 GWM / Summer 2021

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING!

My wedding was very simplistic. An elopement actually, no actual guest. Just myself, my now wife, Kay and our Officiant. The inspiration for the whole day was boho and simple. I love nature settings, and wildflowers! HOW DID YOU DECORATE YOUR SPACE FOR THE CEREMONY AND THE RECEPTION?

Because our wedding was a very small elopement with no guests, the only decor was my wedding bouquet which I DIY’ed myself. (Thank goodness for Joanne Fabrics.)

DO YOU HAVE ANY WEDDING PLANNING OR MARRIAGE ADVICE THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHER COUPLES PLANNING THEIR DAY?

Remember that the day is about you and your soon to be spouse! Try not to stress too much about the day and enjoy every moment!

WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PARTS OF YOUR WEDDING?

I feel like being able to bring Kay with us to Hampton Historic Site made the day really special for us because that is one of our favorite places! LET’S TALK FASHION. HOW DID YOU BOTH CHOOSE YOUR WEDDING DAY LOOK?

So being 6 months pregnant at the time definitely created a struggle with finding outfits for our wedding day. Neither of us are into big traditions or fancy weddings attire. So we chose green and linen, then it was very easy after that. HOW DID YOU MEET?

We have actually met at McDonalds! When we were teenagers 8 years ago! And the rest is history! WHAT WAS THE MOST ANTICIPATED OR SPECIAL MOMENT OF YOUR WEDDING DAY?

Honestly, just being there and taking professional photos! We’d both never done it before. And to have such an amazing photographer and officiant who were both so excepting and made us feel so comfortable, really made the whole day special. gayweddingsmag.com / GWM 31

OUR LOVE STORY Michael and I met 16 years ago at a movie theater when our mutual friend, Alan, invited us out for a movie night. I was single and was in the process of coming out, and Michael was fully in the closet. At first sight we were instantly drawn to each other; however, it wasn’t until after our next movie, where it was just the two of us, that we became inseparable. Wow, it’s crazy to think that was 16 years ago this February! The movie we saw was the most un-romantic movie, called “What the Bleep Do You Know?” That said, our mutual love of movies has always brought us closer to who we are and each other. We chose to have a small wedding on the beach with just Michael, myself, Alan (officiant), Lisa Vanderpump (Yes that LVP) and Marla (our amazing photographer), because we couldn’t wait any longer to make it official. To be fully transparent this was our second wedding so to speak. We had our large dream Wedding with our families on New Year’s Eve; however, due to unforeseen circumstances we couldn’t make it official that day. So we decided to celebrate again with a party in Miami Beach (our residence in the winter). Then the pandemic started… we, of course, postponed the party and decided to get officially married on the beach at The 1Hotel on 10.10.2020. Alan and Lisa Vanderpump (via a Cameo video) officiated our Sunrise Sand Ceremony. The service was so magical, intimate and exactly us! We love to say, “We can do absolutely nothing together with the best of them.” Meaning, that just being with each other is what we love to do, it really doesn’t matter what we are doing. As Lisa Vanderpump said in our ceremony, “Laugh together, cry

together, be comforted by each other’s presence, and secure in each other’s absence.” With that said, we love to travel, play golf, attend concerts and Fine Art Exhibitions and of course, watch movies together. Our best relationship advice is to start couple’s counseling now, not wait until you need it. We have been going to couple’s counseling for about 14 years and refer to it as our preventative relationship-care because it has taught us, along with many, many things, that it is so important to get ahead of issues before they become “problems” and that the “problems” you think you have with the other person are really problems you have within yourself.

HOW DID YOU MEET?

REALWEDDINGS

We met on Tinder in New York while Brian was on assignment at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx NY WHAT WAS THE MOST ANTICIPATED OR SPECIAL MOMENT OF YOUR WEDDING DAY?

The fondest memory of my wedding day was looking out into the courtyard and seeing all of our family and friends there. Given Covid-19 shut down the US two days after our wedding, we had over 120 people in attendance from ages 1-98. My favorite image from our wedding day was the ones of us having our first dance. We sang to one another the entire song and all the lyrics expressed our love for one another. DO YOU HAVE ANY WEDDING PLANNING OR MARRIAGE ADVICE THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHER COUPLES PLANNING THEIR DAY?

Just enjoy your day! Something is most likely not going to go as planned, but don’t let that affect your day and take away from the reason you guys are getting married. Make sure you listen to one another wants and desires. Don’t lose sight of the fact it is both of your wedding day.

Megan and Brettina got married at their home in Imlay City, MI. I have been mentoring Brettina in photography for a few months now, and going to this wedding felt more like attending a friend’s wedding rather than working it. Brettina and Megan are the SWEETEST people I know. Rona made us move the date of the wedding, and at the end they decided to ditch the venue and just get married at home. Everything felt so personal and sweet, and all of the family was super welcoming as well. This day was one of my favorites – and the brides – gosh, they were willing to run in the field while it was raining. Visually this wedding was stunning, and it was one that stole my heart because my past officiant who directed my wedding 5 years ago [almost to the date] was the one who conducted this wedding as well.

SURROGACY OR ADOPTION? POSSIBLE BABY OPTIONS FOR GAY COUPLES

options as any other hopeful parent. You are not defined by your sexual orientation or gender identity, and the processes will be largely the same for you as for any other family.

Are you an LGBT individual wondering what your gay parenting options are? If so, you’ve come to the right place.

If our frequent use of terms like “gay parenting” or “gay surrogacy” seems odd or unnecessary, it may be helpful to READ THIS ARTICLE for more information about these language choices.

The baby options for gay couples and individuals today are far more available than ever before, thanks to recent rulings that have protected LGBT individuals’ rights to marriage and adoption. You always have the right to choose which family-building process is right for you and, whatever you choose, your professional will be there to help you every step of the way. But, how do you know which parenting options for gay couples to consider — and which one is perfect for you? Before making any decision on adoption vs. surrogacy for gay couples, LGBT individuals should talk to the appropriate medical and adoption professionals to determine which options will work best in their situation. In this article, we’ve provided a basic understanding of what the baby options for gay couples are today to help you better decide what may be best for you. It’s important to note that, as a member of the LGBTQ community, you have many of the same family-building

ADOPTION If a genetic relationship isn’t as important to you when it comes to your gay parenting options, you might want to consider adoption. There are many wonderful children around the country and the world waiting for a loving, supportive home, and there are plenty of LGBT-friendly agencies who are happy to match you with the perfect child for your family. There are many different processes through which you can bring an adopted child into your family. If you already have a relationship with a child, you may consider a stepparent, second-parent or relative adoption. If you’re looking to add a child you don’t know to your family, here are a couple adoption paths to consider: FOSTER CARE ADOPTION There are thousands of children who are eligible for adoption through state foster care systems, and foster care adoption gives you the chance

to bring them into your family. In many cases, these children are older and may already have experienced trauma in their childhood. There are many multiracial and LGBT children in the foster care system, and you will have the chance to decide what kind of children you’re comfortable adopting to find the perfect adoption situation for your family. You’ll need to work with your state foster care system or a foster care agency to adopt one of these children. While there is a great deal of training and preparation to go through, the waiting period for this kind of adoption is much shorter than others, and the expenses are often more affordable, as well. PRIVATE DOMESTIC INFANT ADOPTION If you would like to adopt an infant, you’ll likely need to pursue the private domestic infant adoption process. When women find themselves unexpectedly pregnant, some choose to place their child for adoption, and a great deal of these women are comfortable with — and even specifically search out — an LGBT couple to adopt their baby. Like with foster care adoption, there are many adoption agencies out there who embrace LGBT individuals looking to adopt. You can contact them to find out more about their individual requirements, costs to adopt and what the process may look like for you.

For most people, surrogacy goes like this: An embryo is created through IVF using one intended parents’ sperm or egg and a donated gamete. The embryo is then transferred to the uterus of the surrogate where, once it successfully implants, the baby will develop until the surrogate gives birth. TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING! We wanted an evening of love and celebrations with our family and closest friends. It was really about celebrating love. Our theme was easy elegance, with bright florals and lots of greens. We had all 7 of our nieces as bridesmaids dressed all in white as a nod to traditional flower girls. We stayed at the Walper the night before, counter to traditional we know. It really gave us a chance to relax and connect before all the excitement of the day started. We did however not see each other dressed for the wedding until walking down

the aisle. LET’S TALK WEDDING DECOR. HOW DID YOU DECORATE YOUR SPACE FOR THE CEREMONY AND THE RECEPTION? Keeping with the theme of easy elegance, our ceremony space (The Oak Room) had a lovely fire mantle that we covered in bright florals from Lillies White. WHAT WERE THE FLORALS LIKE IN YOUR WEDDING? Bright flowers and lots of greens. The florals really tied our day together giving it a cohesive look. DID YOU PERSONALIZE THE DAY IN ANY WAY? WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PARTS OF YOUR WEDDING? We had ordered a late-night snack of chicken wings and cauliflower wings for our guest. It was supposed to be one order of each with 3 different sauces but the kitchen prepared 3 orders of chicken wings. The was way more than we needed and the result was the last guests and our DJs there trying there hardest to eat a remaining 100 or so wings. Another favorite part of the day was seeing each other in the Oak Room for the first time, it was so emotional, the whole room was in tears. It was a moment we will ever forget. LET’S TALK FASHION. HOW DID YOU BOTH CHOOSE YOUR WEDDING DAY LOOK? Tracy is not about dresses, they

are just not her style. When it came to what to wear on our wedding day she knew she wanted to wear an elegant suite. The one she chose was a perfect expression of who she is, and made her feel so amazing! HOW DID YOU MEET? TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL. We were introduced by some mutual friends and spent the night on the dance floor at the club. It was love at first dance. The proposal happened on a cold day in 2019, we started looking for an escape from the winter weather. We could not take a trip that year but we’re looking for something incredible to celebrate 15 years of being together in

2019. While browsing through some destinations I noticed there are better packages for weddings than other types of celebrations, so I said “Babe, do you wanna just get married?” It doesn’t sound very romantic but we both cried and decided the time was finally right. The destination idea was dropped in favor of saying our “I do’s” where the story started in downtown Kitchener. WHAT WAS THE MOST ANTICIPATED OR SPECIAL MOMENT OF YOUR WEDDING DAY? Seeing each other for the first time walking down the aisle. The moment our eyes met, we both just started to cry. Happy tears gayweddingsmag.com / GWM 51

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING!

Kelsey and I went with a rustic style wedding where we incorporated a more neutral color scheme in the decorations as well as our love, sharing memorabilia of personal pictures throughout the years. We also included a knot tying ceremony to represent our never ending love for each other. HOW DID YOU DECORATE YOUR SPACE FOR THE CEREMONY AND THE RECEPTION? 56 GWM / Summer 2021

Yes, mostly all the décor was DIY. We used wooden flowers of neutral colors that we dyed ourselves with the help of the bridesmaids. We kept it simple and unique. The ceremony was held outside with a few fresh flowers placed in mason jars along the isle and we also had some decorations surrounding us at the altar of different size glass bottles that included wooden flowers of neutral colors. We placed two big grape vines that hung above us decorated also with the wooden flowers. The reception each table was decorated with either blue or gray linen, each table had about three different size glass bottles decorated with the wooden flowers that were placed on a mirror as the centerpiece surrounded by tea lights. WHAT WERE THE FLORALS LIKE IN YOUR WEDDING?

Yes, all of our DIY wooden flowers were incorporated throughout the day. Kelsey made all the bridesmaids bouquets out of the wooden flowers including hers as well. She also made boutonniere’s and corsages. All of the centerpieces included the wooden flowers in glass bottles decorated the tables. DID YOU PERSONALIZE THE DAY IN ANY WAY?

Instead of the traditional seating plan we went with “Take a shot, take a seat” where each guest had the option of silver or gold tequila with personalized shot glasses to take home before picking their

seats. We also incorporated our favorite brewery, Cape May Brewery by sharing some of our favorite beers with our quest which included The Bog, Cape May IPA and Devils Reach. We also included a photo booth and corn hole for guest entertainment. The dessert included a smores table, hers and hers cupcakes of the brides picking. Casey picked a peanut butter and jelly cupcake and Kelsey picked a strawberry shortcake cupcake. We also had Casey’s Uncle John’s famous chocolate chip cookies and plenty of other desserts from Piece of Cake. HOW DID YOU BOTH CHOOSE YOUR WEDDING DAY LOOK?

Kelsey went with a more simple and elegant gown, covered in lace. She also wore a waist length vail that tied into her Disney tiara. Kelsey picked to wear her Grandmother’s pearl necklace. Casey went with gray suit pants with a white button up shirt , vest and suspenders. She also incorporated her love for anchors and Vans by wearing a anchor bowtie and a pair of white Vans. All the bridesmaids either rocked a long gray or steal blue dress except for one of Casey’s bridesmaids who rocked the same style as Casey. All the bridesmaids wore Vans opposite colors of their dresses. HOW DID YOU MEET? TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL.

In May of 2015 we went on our first date and then to our first concert. Two short months later we made our relationship official. Fast forward three years and Casey planned one of the best days we’ve had together. From asking my parents, to creating a beautiful and personalized ring, she popped the question during our fall photoshoot. WHAT WAS THE MOST ANTICIPATED OR SPECIAL MOMENT OF YOUR WEDDING DAY?

We both looked forward to spending our special day with family and friends who have supported us since the very beginning. For Kelsey her most special moment was walking down the isle. For Casey her most special moment was sharing that first dance with her new bride. DO YOU HAVE ANY WEDDING PLANNING THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING!

Our wedding was absolutely perfect for us. My wife Auri has always lived a very conservative life as a closeted transgender woman. So our wedding was a representation of our journey together and the blossoming of our love. Our inspiration was that love conquers all. Blush and Champagne were the featured colors. We created our own Family tradition by saying our vowels under a triangle arbor, which represented recovery. 62 GWM / Summer 2021

Each side of the triangle represents a tradition followed within recovery. These are our promises to each other. To be honest, loyal, and courageous in everything we do. HOW DID YOU DECORATE YOUR SPACE FOR THE WEDDING?

If we could put a label on the decorations, I would consider them rustic chic. The majority of our decorations were handmade, hand-selected, and hot-glued together. We only gave ourselves three months to plan, coordinate, and strategize our wedding’s look and schedule. At specific points, we were limited to only one hour a day for DIY. The most challenging (yet creative) DIY was our homemade liquid soaps, which we presented as “thank you” gifts to our guests. We thought it would be a great item to have, considering this was all amidst a global pandemic. HOW DID YOU BOTH CHOOSE YOUR WEDDING DAY LOOK?

We didn’t have a planned goal for personal looks. We went with what made us individually feel beautiful. We both have very different tastes in fashion. My wife Auri adores 1940’s midi sundresses, she loves regal, refined clothing, and you can often find her wearing my great grandmother’s pearls. So when we found her high neck, slim fitted bedazzled wedding gown, we immediately bought it. However, I’m pretty fluid in my taste of fashion. I sometimes like wearing dresses and other times wearing leather gayweddingsmag.com / GWM 63

jackets, jeans, and combat boots. I picked the first dress I saw and had to do last-minute alterations. We kept our overall styles pretty standard with what our day to day beauty routines are! We were adding glam to our final look with accessories and our beautiful wedding dresses. HOW DID YOU MEET? TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL.

We met back in 2013 through mutual friends. It wasn’t until May of 2017 that we began talking romantically. My son at the time was five months old and Auri (my wife) immediately jumped in to be part of our life. It’s been three years we now have another beautiful child. Her name is Matilda. Auri proposed to me on Febuary 26th, 2020. We planned for a great date night away from the children. Tattoos, Crab legs, and a walk on the beach. While my fingers were completely covered in garlic butter my wife proposed to me. It was brilliantly perfect!

best and even more than I ever thought I deserved. DO YOU HAVE ANY WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHER COUPLES?

I received this advice from my boss, and so I pass it on to you. Make a list of the top ten most important things you want to experience at your wedding. One is the most important, and ten is moderate in preference. Anything below the seventh goal/wish, leave it up to god, the universe, or whatever. Let it go! Weddings are stressful and chaotic, but you should still enjoy yourself. Advice: Be open to learning your partner. You don’t know everything, people are evolving, and people change.

WHAT WAS THE MOST ANTICIPATED OR SPECIAL MOMENT OF YOUR WEDDING DAY?

Auri: Getting to stand under our arbor and sharing our vowels. I was curious as to what my wife was going to say, what my sister (our officiary) would say. Everything was unrehearsed and genuine. Jessie: My favorite is knowing she’ll take my family name. I’m very proud to introduce her to our family name, I could not have picked a better woman to represent our legacy. She’s the

HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR PARTNER WAS THE ONE? Melissa’s Answer: Kim and I have always even from the beginning had this incredible comfort with each other. There was an ease in being together even when we first met. I never felt like I had to modify anything about myself at all. I could be silly, goofy, honest, and 100% genuine without fear of judgement or ridicule. Kim felt like she communicated and opened up more effortlessly than she ever had before. I felt like a truer version of myself than I ever had before. I realized we were making each other better versions of ourselves, each enhancing the other. When I had that realization, I remember telling my cousin, that I just knew she was the one. Kim’s Answer: I don’t think I even consciously thought about her being the one. It was more just a seamless transition from this is my girlfriend to I want to marry this girl! There wasn’t any one thing that made me think “She’s the one!”. More like a series of small things that added up to this fullness, and I knew I didn’t want to have to experience any more of life without her. When I started looking at engagement rings for Melissa... I don’t know.. it was like that scene in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, when Harry drinks the Felix Felices and he decides on a whim to go see Hagrid. And Ron and Hermione asked him why and he says”I dont know. It just feels right.” That’s basically how I felt.

HOW DID YOU TWO FIRST MEET?

We met at Detroit PRIDE in 2017 after matching on Tinder during Ferndale pride. Cameron was working at a booth for a local LGBTQ+ nonprofit, Affirmations, and after he was done with his shift we spent the day together with my friends. We watched local artists and saw BenDeLaCreme perform. WHAT MAKES YOUR RELATIONSHIP SPECIAL?

Our relationship is special in that we have many shared interests. We are two nerds that love video games. We have spent lots of quality time together playing various Pokemon games as well as Animal Crossing New Horizon. Cameron has also helped me get more into comic books and loves to support our local shop Vault of Midnight. HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR PARTNER WAS THE ONE?

I knew that Cameron was the one after spending an evening in downtown Ann Arbor. The streets were crowded, but we had a beautiful evening and when we got back to my apartment we were listening to music and dancing and I could feel in that moment how much I loved him.

AJ AND NICK met in 2016 on Tinder. For the first two weeks, they talked every day and about everything to figure out exactly who they were and what they wanted out of the “relationship” moving forward. On the weekend of Thanksgiving, Nick invited A.J. over for an impromptu movie night at his mom’s while he was home in Staten Island for a few days. All they did that night was talk. They didn’t even watch the movie they intended to. A.J. said they put it on in the background to fill the void. From the beginning, they always felt the magnetic connection to each other. Everything felt comfortable and they could be themselves around each other. They worked through their issues being long distance. A.J. said that they consider their love to be like a beautiful plant - if you give it love and attention it deserves and you take care of it, it is going to grow and bloom & be the best it can be. They got engaged in Copenhagen in 2019 and have been on cloud 9 ever since.

WHAT MAKES YOUR RELATIONSHIP SPECIAL?

Craig: The things that make our relationship special are attributes I would hope every couple experiences: We continuously show our love and support for one another, display an infinite degree of patience and understanding, always find things that make us laugh, make the time to communicate whole-heartedly about our thoughts and feelings, and remember to always slow down and cherish our moments together. Family and friends are our lives! We both value health and fitness and love to work out together. We both love to cook and share our family recipes. We love to travel and be outside. Last summer we visited Sedona, Arizona and have been dreaming about going back out West ever since. HOW DID YOU KNOW YOUR PARTNER WAS THE ONE?

Scott: The biggest step in any relationship isn’t the first kiss... it’s the first fart. We were both lying on the couch one day and I asked Craig what he would do if I farted. Surprisingly, he turned to me and said, “I’d probably start laughing.” So without hesitation I farted and we both started laughing. It’s rare to find someone with whom you can be your whole true self. Something as simple as a fart can make some people feel so vulnerable and awkward. You know you’ve found “Mr. Right” when he accepts every part of you, even the smelly ones. gayweddingsmag.com / GWM 73

COMPLETE GUIDE TO ESTATE PLANNING FOR LGBT COUPLES

T

hroughout much of our country’s history, the LGBTQ community has been forced to diligently fight to be afforded the same securities heterosexual couples are guaranteed. And sadly, without proper LGBT Estate Planning, that fight can continue even after death. While some progress has been made in recent years, the simple fact is this: same-sex couples must continue to be conscientious and thoughtful when it comes to their Estate Planning efforts. At Trust & Will, we know that estate planning is one of the most important tools to help families plan for the future. Having an estate plan in place helps make sure that you are taking steps so that your loved ones can continue to build on your legacy. Even with simple estates, Estate Planning can be confusing and convoluted. Add in the additional unknowns, legal complexities and battles that members of the LGBTQ+ community face in today’s world, Estate Planning can seem even more daunting. Below are 6 tips to know while

82 GWM / Summer 2021

you’re creating LGBTQ+ Wills, Trusts and other components of an Estate Plan.

TIP 1: LEGALLY NAMING YOUR PARTNER OR SPOUSE IS ESSENTIAL Even if you’re legally married, if you want your partner or spouse to have the authority to be able to make decisions for you, whether those are financial or medical, you should specifically name them in one of the many Estate Planning documents out there: Durable Financial Power of Attorney (POA) - Authorizes someone to make decisions regarding your financial affairs if you’re incapacitated or unavailable to make them for yourself. ● Living Will - Also sometimes referred to as an Advanced Healthcare Directive, a Living Will explicitly states your end-of-life care wishes should you ever be incapacitated and unable to express them on your own. ● Medical Power of Attorney (POA) - This document gives authority to another person (for LGBT couples, it’s often a partner or spouse) to make any

and all medical decisions for you if you’re unable to do so. ● HIPAA - Essential for LGBTQ+couples, the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) privacy authorization form gives doctors and healthcare providers consent to discuss and disclose your health condition and records with the person you designate. This authorization can be incredibly important should medical records ever be needed to confirm or establish mental capacity or medical condition after your passing in order to execute your wishes.

TIP 2: SAME SEX MARRIAGE, DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP, AND CIVIL UNION ARE NOT THE SAME It’s important to understand that guaranteed benefits and rights for same-sex or LGBTQ+ couples can widely differ depending on local state laws. Be sure you understand and know what you and your partner are entitled to under the law. This is especially important if you’re legally married in one state but move to another. Updating your Estate Plan to reflect the laws of your new home may be necessary.

TIP 3: PROPER ESTATE PLANNING CAN OFFER MANY BENEFITS In addition to protecting your spouse or partner, an Estate Plan can offer other financial benefits as well. For example, Estate Plans can help you avoid probate, potentially give tax advantages and, if using the right legal vehicle, may even offer you legal and creditor asset protection.

TIP 4: ENSURING YOUR CHILDREN GO TO YOUR PARTNER MEANS APPOINTING GUARDIANSHIP If you share children, this may be one of the single most essential components that Estate Planning for LGBTQ couples must address. It’s not uncommon for courts to step in and make decisions about guardianship for children. And often, the family of origin or another biological parent will be given preference. If you share a child, you can avoid any misinterpretations about who should step in by formally nominating your spouse or partner to be legal guardian of any children if you pass away or become incapacitated.

TIP 5: MUCH OF A PROPERLY-PREPARED ESTATE PLAN WILL REMAIN CONFIDENTIAL Other than your Will, which becomes public record, most of your Estate Plan is private. This would include any Powers of Attorney (POA) you set up - both medical and financial - as well

as your Revocable Living Trust. The power of privacy can be a blessing.

TIP 6: FAILING TO PLAN CAN BE PLANNING TO FAIL FOR SAME-SEX COUPLES Unfortunately, if you live in a state that does not recognize same-sex relationships or partnerships, when you pass away, without proper Estate Planning documents in effect, you will have died intestate. This means that if you pass away, your partner may not be legally entitled to anything - this could include bank accounts, property, children, retirement accounts and other assets. The only way to fully ensure your family is protected is by having an Estate Plan clearly defined.

REALWEDDINGS

We always wanted a backyard wedding, to save on costs and show off our garden. When the pandemic hit, we decided to cut the wedding to immediate family only and have a barbecue reception in the yard as well. We originally had a blue and pink color palette, but as it became clear this was going to be a very small gathering, we just had fun with it. We got floral table runners and cat statues to place around the yard. It was a secular wedding, as neither of us is religious. HOW DID YOU DECORATE YOUR SPACE FOR THE CEREMONY AND THE RECEPTION?

We hung fairy lights from our garage wall, and strung more from the garage to the roof of the house. We pinned silk flowers from craft stores to the lights to brighten the space. We found a Henry VIII pitcher at a second-hand store and decided to use it as a vase. Perhaps that was bad luck for a wedding? And we had many cat vases and statuettes to place around the yard. Mostly, we just focused on planting more flowers and taking care of the garden beds to make it beautiful. WHAT WERE THE FLORALS LIKE IN YOUR WEDDING?

Because the wedding had to be cut down so much, we canceled our flower vendor to save that money for a vow renewal ceremony postpandemic. We got flowers from Costco, mixed with some silk flowers from craft stores. WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PARTS OF YOUR WEDDING?

Kelsey’s mom made bowties for the cats so they could be part of the wedding photos. We also took 86 GWM / Summer 2021

photos at the old museum, where we met and fell in love. The best part of a small wedding is the intimacy. We didn’t need to go all out on vendors, because the only guests were the 8 people who love us most in the world. We just barbecued and sat around in patio chairs chatting all evening. The small wedding meant no stress. We didn’t have to accommodate 100 guests and juggle vendors and make sure everyone was enjoying themselves. We got to enjoy being in love, getting married, and sharing our love with our families. DO YOU HAVE ANY WEDDING PLANNING OR MARRIAGE ADVICE TO SHARE?

For us, a big thing was having our families there to help. They took a lot of stress off. We made a list of what we needed them to do, so that they weren’t scrambling and adding more chaos to the day by trying to help without any guidance. We also promised each other that, as busy and wild as the lead up to the wedding would be, we would shake off any stress the day of and just enjoy being together. If something went wrong, it didn’t matter. We could laugh it off, because nothing was as important as our commitment to each other.
