Design is like a GPS...

In more ways than one. No matter what you’re doing— creating an ad, a logo, a catalog, there will always be more than one way for you to get to that final product.

The glorious thing about design is that there’s no right or wrong way. Yes, some ways may take more time. Some ways may cost more money. But ultimately it is important that you achieve your final product in the way that best suites you.

DESIGN IS messy

I’m a visual person.

Like many creative professionals, I am very much a visual person. I need to see bits and pieces of what I have going on in my mind, fleshed out on paper (or, in this case... on screen).

This is how you’ll see me start almost all of my projects. Especially for new clients. No matter if it’s for an ad, a catalog, a social campaign, a logo or a full rebrand.

Notice there’s nothing but black and white. I’m not worried about a color palette quite yet. This phase is strictly about setting the style of the design through font selection.

How many fonts do you usually use in a design? No right or wrong answer, here!

PALETTE color

I’m very black & white.

If you know me... or even if you don’t and you’re just the slightest bit observant... you may notice that I am a very black and white kind of gal. I mean that in the most literal sense... my entire closet starts at white and goes to black.

So, this can often times be the scariest part of the design process for me.

SOMETIMES IT'S EASY.

Because they have already been established.

Sometimes (a lot of times) selecting colors is easy because they’ve already been selected for me!

Question

How many colors do you like to use throughout a design?

photography

The power of a photo.

Keeping the style of photography consistent is as important as keeping the fonts and color consistent throughout a design!

In addition to design, I take a lot of photos for clients. So I am able to control that narrative to a certain extent.

I am very, very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work on design projects that include the work of incredible photographers (some of who are here at Ag Media Summit).

Often times I find that it’s how I use a photo in a design that makes the design “pop”.

TOUCH (literally)

Long. Live. Print.

There is no denying we live in an era that is heavily digital. That being said... I refuse to ever let print become irrelevant.

The list of reasons why is a mile long, so I won’t bore you with them. But, I will say this:

How your design is printed, how it feels in the hands of the viewer is one more opportunity we have as creators to leave a lasting impression.
