CBI quotes “It’s huge, really big for us...Obviously, in the postseason, this group that we’ve had the last two years, if you add it up, we’re (10-0) right now in the postseason.” -- VCU head coach, Shaka Smart, 2010 CBI Champion and 2011 Final Four Participant when asked about using the CBI experience as a springboard to NCAA Tournament success. “The national title game was a dud, but at least I got to enjoy the College Basketball Invitational final - Oregon’s dramatic 71-69 victory against Creighton.” -- Gary Horowitz, Statesman Journal “Tomorrow it will be a month since we played in our conference tournament, so those four weeks for us, with the extra practices and the six extra games, have been invaluable.” -- Creighton Head Coach, Greg McDermott “I think it’s just great to play in the postseason, regardless of what tournament it is, just having a chance to play, taking advantage of it. Now we’re down to no more chances to even play in a Duck uniform.” -- Oregon Senior, Joevan Catron “It’s a great challenge to motivate young kids. Everyone dreams of going to the NCAA tourney, and we were heartbroken for two days. When we got invited to play here, I think we got energized again. We’ve got nine seniors, we don’t want to be done yet; we want to keep playing.” -- Boston University Head Coach, Pat Chambers “Our guys deserve this. We absolutely deserve to be playing postseason basketball and being a part of March Madness. We were obviously disappointed that we didn’t win our conference tournament, but we still wanted to be a part of postseason basketball...this gives us another chance to showcase our basketball program on a larger stage.” -- Former IUPUI Head Coach, Ron Hunter “It’s a momentum builder going into next year. We’re losing some seniors, but it’s going to give us confidence for next year. We went out this season with a bang.” -- VCU player Jamie Skeen, after winning the 2010 CBI Championship (VCU advanced to the 2011 Final Four) “We’re so happy the season didn’t end with the San Diego State game. A lot of people go a lot of places for spring break and we’re just happy to be going to Morehead State.” -- Colorado State Head Coach, Tim Miles “I believe anytime you have the opportunity to play in postseason that’s a tribute to the type of successful season you’ve had and the respect that our program has gained on a national level.” -- Morehead State Head Coach, Donnie Tyndall 8

about the event The College Basketball Invitational presented by Zebra Pen was created in 2007 and the inaugural tournament occured following the conclusion of the 2007-2008 men’s college basketball regular season. The CBI provides a meaningful opportunity for teams that deserve a postseason experience. Sixteen teams compete in this four-yearold postseason event, hosted at on-campus arenas throughout the country. The CBI is a single-elimination tournament up until the Championship Series, which is a best-of-three series. The event features eight first round games, four quarterfinal round games, a semifinal round, and then Championship Series. The goal of the brackets is to create a competitive balance within each bracket and to minimize missed class time. The final process takes place after the NCAA Tournament field is announced.
UTEP’s Don Haskins Arena sold out for Games 2 and 3 of the 2009 Championship Series.
Teams are invited based upon performance during their conference and nonconference schedules, as well as how well the team is playing at the end of the regular season.
Fans rush the court following Game 3 of the Championship Series at Tulsa during the Inaugural CBI in 2008 (above left) and after Game 3 of the Championship Series at Oregon during the 2011 CBI presented by Zebra Pen. 14 cbi2011.com

B=C@</;3<B <=B3A Fourth Annual CBI presented by Zebra Pen The fourth annual CBI presented by Zebra Pen began on March 15 with four Opening Round games, with four additional Opening Round games played on March 16. The Quarterfinals were played on March 21, followed by Semifinal Round action this evening. The unique quality of the CBI presented by Zebra Pen is its best-ofthree Championship Series, which will be held March 28, March 30, and April 1. One team will host two games should a third game be necessary. Breeding Success Six participants in the 2010 CBI presented by Zebra Pen earned berths in the 2011 NCAA Tournament: Akron, Boston University, Indiana State, Morehead State, Princeton, and VCU. Below is a look at how other postseason tournaments fed into this year’s NCAA Tournament: CBI - 6 of 16 (38%) NIT - 7 of 32 (22%) CIT - 1 of 16 (6%) History Made Again History has been made every step of the way in the CBI presented by Zebra Pen. The most recent historical event occurred on Monday in Game 1 of the Championship Series when Creighton’s Doug McDermott scored 21 points in the Bluejay’s 84-76 win over Oregon, giving him 562 points on the year to set a Missouri Valley Conference freshman scoring record. Another brush with history in the Championship Series opener was the crowd as a CBI-record 12,381 fans attended the Creighton-Oregon game. That broke the previous standard of 12,000 set by UTEP in its two Championship Series games against Oregon State in 2009...In the First
Round, Rhode Island’s Delroy James became the first player in URI history to record a triple-double when he went for 22 points, 11 rebounds, and a career-high 10 assists in the Rams’ 76-59 win over Miami (Ohio). The win was URI’s 20th of the year, giving the current senior class - James, Marquis Jones, Ben Eaves, Will Martell - a school record 90 career wins... Hofstra’s Charles Jenkins scored 14 points in the Pride’s 77-70 loss at Evansville to became just the 62nd player in NCAA history to score 2,500 career points. He ended his career with 2,513 career points...UCF’s 69-54 win over St. Bonaventure marked the first ever Division I postseason win for the Knights...Creighton and Davidson played a record-setting game in the Quarterfinal Round. The Bluejays and Wildcats combined to score 194 points to establish a CBI standard in a 102-92 Bluejays’ win. Creighton’s 102 set a CBI presented by Zebra Pen record. Believe it...or Not Games in the CBI presented by Zebra Pen have been the most competitive of the postseason (average margin of victory): 2010 2009 2008
NCAA 10.6 points 12.7 points 13.8 points
NIT 8.7 points 9.0 points 12.7 points
CBI 9.0 points 6.6 points 7.1 points
Did You Know... Tulsa (2008) and Oregon State (2009) won the first two CBIs. Both series went the distance as Tulsa won Games 1 and 3 against Bradley in 2008 and Oregon State did the same in 2009 against UTEP. Last year, VCU became the first team to need only two games to win the CBI crown. Fantastic 213,587 fans attended games at the first three CBIs.

Championship Series of the College Basketball Invitational presented by Zebra Pen Commences Monday FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 27, 2011 Contact: Ray Cella 609-921-1300 (rcella@gazellegroup.com) PRINCETON, N.J. - Creighton and Oregon will begin their quest for the 2011 College Basketball Invitational presented by Zebra Pen title on Monday evening. Creighton (22-14) advanced to the Championship Series with wins over San Jose State (8574), Davidson (102-92), and UCF (82-64). Oregon (19-17) reached the Championship Series by posting victories over Weber State (68-59), Duquesne (77-75), and Boise State (79-71). The best-of-three Championship Series begins at Creighton on Monday, March 28. Tip time is 8:00pm ET. The series will then shift to Oregon for the second and third games (if necessary) on Wednesday, March 30, and Friday, April 1. Games in Oregon will tip at 10:00pm ET. Each game of the Championship Series will be televised live by HDNet with Rich Cellini (play-by-play) and Craig Ehlo (analyst) calling the action. In an ironic twist, Oregon's Dana Altman served as head coach at Creighton for 16 years before being named to the same position at Oregon on April 26, 2010. Altman was succeeded at Creighton by Greg McDermott. With Altman and McDermott each being in their first season at their respective institutions, this will mark the third straight year that the CBI presented by Zebra Pen champion will have a first-year head coach at its helm. In 2009, Oregon State won the CBI title with Craig Robinson in his first season in Corvallis. Last year, Shaka Smart guided VCU to the crown in his initial season. Tulsa, the inaugural CBI champion in 2008, was under the direction of Doug Wojcik, who was then in his third year with the Hurricane.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING (When asked about using the CBI experience as a springboard to NCAA Tournament success) "It's huge, really big for us. One of the things that happens when you get into conference play is everyone knows what you're doing...When you get outside the league, teams don't know you as well. I think our style has really been effective. Obviously, in the postseason, this group that we've had the last two years, if you add it up, we're 8-0 right now in the postseason." - VCU Head Coach Shaka Smart, 2010 CBI Champions and 2011 Final Four Participant WHAT THEY'RE SAYING "(UCF head coach) Donnie Jones knows there will come a time next season when he'll point back to something from Wednesday's win against St. Bonaventure - the way UCF defended in the 2-3 zone or the way the Knights attacked offensively with their drive-and-kick game - and realize the direct benefits of playing in the postseason." - John Denton, Knights Insider DID YOU KNOW A CBI record crowd of 12,381 saw Creighton defeat Oregon, 84-76, in the first game of the 2011 Championship Series at Qwest Center Omaha. Oregon averaged 8,605 fans at its two Championship Series games in Eugene. WHAT THEY'RE SAYING "Tomorrow, it will be a month since we played in our conference tournament, so those four weeks for us, with the extra practices and the six extra games, have been invaluable." - Creighton Head Coach Greg McDermott WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
